2023 Elections: Ohanaeze appeals to Buhari to allow Nnamdi Kanu address the Igbos

Ahead of the forthcoming general elections in the country, the Secretary-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to allow Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous people of Biafra, IPOB, to address the people of the South-East.

Recall that Finland-based Simon Ekpa is being accused of sponsoring the unknown gunmen causing chaos across the Southeast.

Ekpa, who used to be a self-styled disciple of Kanu, was suspended by the separatist group over alleged insubordination.

Unpertubed by the suspension, Ekpa has continued his Biafra agitation and orders sit-at-home in the Southeast.

However, the apex Igbo socio-political organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has placed a $50,000 bounty on him.

Findings show that  the killing in the Southeast became more rampant following Kanu’s arrest and detention.

The IPOB leader has been detained by the Federal Government since June 2022 after he was arrested in Kenya and repatriated to Nigeria.

Over the weekend, a video surfaced online of unknown gunmen beheading Chris Ohizu, the Chairman of Ideato North Local Government of Imo State.

The decapitalization of Ohizu’s head is one of the many killings witnessed in the Southeast.

While these gunmen have denied links to IPOB, some stakeholders in the Southeast have accused Ekpa of backing them.

However, the Ohanaeze Secretary-General, Isiguzoro, said the killings in the Southeast would subside if Buhari allows the IPOB leader to address Nigerians.

Speaking with journalists on the activists of gunmen linked to Ekpa, Isiguzoro reiterated his stance on a plot to destabilise the 2023 elections in the Southeast using Ekpa.

According to Isiguzoro: “This madness of sit-at-home and incessant killings and insecurity we are witnessing in the Southeast can be traced to the continuous incarceration of Nnamdi Kanu, which Simon Ekpa is taking undue advantage of.

“Ekpa is an opportunist, a fame and fortune seeker who saw the window and lapses of Kanu’s detention as an opportunity for him to venture into his journey of amassing wealth from politicians and destroying the people of the Southeast.

“The only cure to this madness of Simon Ekpa is a passionate appeal to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to allow the leader of IPOB to address Ndigbo possibly this February before the elections, because there is a grand conspiracy by some external enemies of Ndigbo, and they are using Ekpa to shortchange and ensure that there is an election boycott in the Southeast.

“The only cure to this Ekpa’s madness is for Buhari to allow Kanu, even if it’s a five-minute broadcast, because Kanu has continued to say through his lawyers that these killings and insecurity in the Southeast should end. The activities of unknown gunmen instigated by Ekpa should end, and why there has been no effect on those messages is that the people doubt if those messages are from Nnamdi Kanu.

“So, in order to have a peaceful election, the Federal Government should give Nnamdi Kanu a five-minute broadcast to talk to the people of the Southeast; this would end Ekpa and his madness.”

According to INEC the presidential election will hold on the the 25th of February while the gubernatorial elections will hold on the 11th of March.

2023 Elections: Power outage mars APC campaign rally in Bauchi

Power outage experienced during the All Progressives Congress, APC All Progressives Congress, (APC)  forced the organizers to end abruptly  the campaign meant to hold at the All Progressives Congress, APC owing to the fact that the microphone ceased to work.

The Party’s National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, who was supposed to usher President Muhammadu Buhari and the party’s presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to the podium, had barely started making his remarks when the microphone malfunctioned.

President Buhari had merely climbed the stage and presented the party’s flag to APC governorship candidate in the state, when the microphone started to malfunction. All efforts by the engineer on ground to get it to work proved abortive.

The President’s security immediately ferried him out of the stadium without making any speech after the presentation of the flag.

Similarly, the presidential candidate, Tinubu and his running mate, Kashim Shettima, left the venue without uttering a word to the crowd of party members and supporters after the development caused a commotion at the venue.

President Buhari tasks Nigerians on patriotism to end insurgency

President Muhammadu Buhari has urged Nigerians to demonstrate high sense of patriotism to sustain the gains recorded in the war against insurgency.

Buhari made the call when he paid homage to the Emir of Damaturu, Alhaji Hashimi El-Kenemi II, on Monday in Damaturu.

He enjoined the citizens to develop strong confidence in the country and security institutions to deny terrorists chance to destabilise the country again.

The President said government would continue to protect the right to education of Nigerian children, especially those displaced by Boko Haram insurgency.

‘‘With the four months I have left as President, I will continue to be steadfast and I hope that I will retire in peace.

‘‘We must develop strong confidence in our country. Let us make sure we do not compromise security at all in any form because security and economy are the most important things.

‘‘We have gone through so much as a country and I appeal to you to be steadfast and make sure that we will not allow anybody to disorganise us again,’’ he said.

Buhari commended Gov Mai Mala Buni and his Borno counterpart, Babagana Zulum for their roles in the reconstruction of schools and health centres destroyed by the insurgents.

He noted that the country had bounced back, waxing stronger in spite of attempts by enemies of progress.

He also commended the Armed Forces, the police and other security outfits for their sacrifices in protecting the country.

The President recounted that having fought to defend Nigeria’s unity during the civil war, those who were part of that experience would never ‘‘allow anybody to fiddle with this country again.’’

In his remarks, Buni recalled that the palace of the Emir of Damaturu was overrun by terrorists at the heat of the insurgency.

‘‘However, today and worthy of note is that Yobe is one of the states you liberated from the clutches of Boko Haram terrorists.

‘‘Before, in this palace even if you placed one billion dollars for someone to come and pick it, nobody dared to come near.

“But your coming on-board has made that history and the people of Yobe are enjoying relative peace,” he said.

Also, Hashimi thanked the president for improved security in the country, saying ‘‘we have had bitter experiences in the past, but your administration has unified the country’’.

Newsmen reports that the Buhari earlier inaugurated Police Hospital, Police Secondary School, Police Headquarters and access roads initiated by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba.

The president also inaugurated viable projects executed by Buni administration including Yobe Cargo Airport, Ultra-modern Market, Maternal and Child Healthcare Complex, Model School and 2,600 housing estate.

Newsmen also reports that the Yobe government organised a banquet in honour of the president who is on an official visit to the state.

The number one citizen however expressed delight at the return of peace to Yobe State and Northeast Nigeria.

He attributed the prevailing peace to the ingenuity of Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State and his Borno State counterpart, Prof Babagana Zulum.

According to Buhari, both leaders have been persistent in reconstructing schools, health centers and institutions destroyed by the misguided terrorists.

Recall that Buhari has in recent times been saying he was looking forward to a life of retirement from the presidency as he would stay far away from Abuja the seat of power.

He added that he would be relocating to Daura his hometown after May 29th hand over date to enjoy his retirement,

  • 2023: Accord party presidential candidate, Prof. Imumolen replies Afe Babalola

2023: Accord party presidential candidate, Prof. Imumolen replies Afe Babalola

Accord Party (AP) presidential candidate, Professor Christopher Imumolen has openly disagreed with senior lawyer, Afe Babalola (SAN) that only candidates with bags of money to spend will win the 2023 election.

TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports that Afe Babalola noted that the best candidate may not necessarily win the election as the country’s politician moneybags will spend money to win the elections.

However, Imumolen has now  openly opposed the position of elder statesman, Chief Afe Babalola about the role money would play in determining the winner.

The country’s youngest presidential candidate issued a statement at the weekend in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti capital.

“The 2023 presidential elections is not going to be won by one who thinks he can make the difference. Neither will it be the person with the right age, health, education or patriotism.

“Rather, it will be the person who has made money in this country, the person with the deepest pocket that will win the elections,” Babalola said.

Reacting on Channels TV Talkshow, ‘Politics Today’, Imumolen criticised Babalola’s claims, citing several instances to support his opinion.

“With all due respect, I disagree with our most learned elder statesman, Afe Babalola on his claims that the person with the deepest pocket in this year’s presidential race will ultimately win the elections.

“There are several instances, particularly since the advent of the 4th Republic in 1999 where money was never the determining factor in whom became Nigeria’s president.

“Let’s start with the 1999 presidential elections between Chief Olusegun Obasanjo of the PDP and Chief Olu Falae of the then AD.

“Obasanjo, if we’d recall, won that elections despite not having bags of money to throw around. Infact, he had just returned from prison where he had no money or played any active politics before the elections.

“Then, came his successor Umar Yar’Adua. Yar’Adua, we also know had just finished his tenure as Katsina State governor and wasn’t one you could refer to as someone who could, solely on the strength of his wealth, win the country’s presidency.

“Even then, we had more people in the race who could have beaten him hands down were cash the sole determinant of who clinched the presidency. But at the end, he won.

“Never mind that he said the system that ushered him into power was flawed. The truth is that he won.

“Again, let’s look at current president, Muhammadu Buhari. We all know that if it came to who had the most cash to throw around, it would have been Dr Goodluck Jonathan who was then the incumbent president.

“Yet, against all odds, Buhari stormed to victory and he is just about completing his eight-year tenure as Nigeria’s president.

“So, these examples tell us that it is not necessarily the man with the deepest pocket who always ends up as Nigeria’s president.

“In this year’s presidential race, I think the people’s genuine wish to see a change from the old ways of doing things to a new one could prove the determining factor, rather than the now outdated method of trying to buy people’s conscience through prodigal spending”, the AP flagbearer added.

INEC has fixed February 2023 for the presidential election and National election day, while Gubernatorial and State Assembly elections would hold on March 12th, 2023.

  • President Buhari’s 2023 New Year message

President Buhari’s 2023 New Year message

    My Fellow Countrymen and Women.

A very happy and prosperous New Year to you.

First, I would like to thank and honour the Almighty who saw us through the year 2022 and has given us the opportunity to see another year. Each New Year is an opportunity to reflect on the past year, reposition, and move forward with the New.

As we celebrate the opportunity to be alive in the year 2023, we must also acknowledge the passing away of our brothers and sisters who didn’t make it into this new year. May their souls rest in perfect peace.

This year is particularly important to me because this message is in essence valedictory. After having the honour of serving you, my compatriots, for the last seven plus years, my tenure as your President in the most revered tradition of our ongoing and maturing democracy must necessarily come to an end. In the next five months we would have gone to the polls and elected a new president along with new governors and a plethora of other elected officials at both the national and state levels.

All these electoral and democratic principles are working in concert because of the transcendent beliefs, beyond partisan politics, of you the great citizen of Nigeria. In addition is my personal commitment and executive promise to see to the letter that the 2023 elections being diligently conducted by INEC will be free and fair. The collective electoral will and votes of Nigerians will be fulfilled, even in the twilight moments of my watch.

Reflecting on year 2022 allows us as a government to examine our legacies of successes and challenges. As we celebrate our wins and review obstacles, we all must understand that governance is a continuum, which still places a transitional responsibility on this administration to provide for the incoming government a non-partisan and objective roadmap for 2023. We as Nigeria; one country united under the will of God and actively growing as an indivisible entity, have been enabled year after year, decade after decade, to weather all stormy waters and emerge stronger and better where others have fallen and disintegrated. This has made us a unique nation across the globe and our continent.

In year 2023, Nigerians go to the polls to exercise our right to vote and elect a new Administration, it is an important year for our country to ensure that we have another smooth transition of government, to whoever the people have decided upon. This administration’s landmark Amended Electoral Act will ensure that we have free and fair elections across the Nation. We as Nigerians must also take responsibility to ensure we participate in ensuring that the 2023 elections are free and fair by not engaging in anti-state activities and other nefarious acts that may affect the run of the polls. We must also resist every attempt to be used by politicians to create unrest in any form to disrupt the elections. We, as government will ensure such activities are met with the full force of the law.

As our security agencies continue to make the country proud, we must continue to assist our patriotic forces by providing much needed community intelligence. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that Nigeria remains safe and peaceful for us all. Therefore, we have a duty and obligation to support our troops and intelligence agencies by being alert and reporting anything suspicious. The fight against insurgency in the North East region has continually recorded very clear wins in the past year. The Federal Government, and the Borno State government, have started the journey of returning internally displaced persons to their ancestral homes earlier taken by the insurgents. Also, over 82,000 insurgents with their families have surrendered to the Nigerian military. A number of surrendered insurgents are currently being processed by the rehabilitation (Operation Safe Corridor) program. The fight against banditry, kidnapping and other crimes in the North West and other regions is gaining momentum and showing very clear results. One of which is the resumption of Train Service along the Kaduna to Abuja corridor.

In the aftermath of the EndSars, our administration took heed and instituted the ongoing Police Reform program based on a new Presidential Vision for Policing in Nigeria. This new vision is framed in a clear road map that transcends the tenure of this administration and it is predicated on six principles: a) Building Trust and Legitimacy b) Leadership, Accountability and Oversight c)Technology and digital media d) Community Policing and Crime Reduction e) Officers Training and Education f) Funding, Officers’ Welfare, Wellness and Safety.

This reform program is very much in its foundational phase but has recorded noteworthy successes in improving police welfare and their emoluments. Other gains have been the ongoing training of 500 police cadet trainers to enable a better training regimen for the 2022 first batch of the 10,000 new cadets with an additional 10,000 set for 2023. In support of these reforms has been the provisioning of new material for the Nigeria Police to steadily improve on its constitutional responsibility to enforce law and order, protect lives and property as well as street level peace and security.

Despite the ongoing global economic crisis, we have been able to weather the storms. Inflation across the globe is at its highest, the Federal Government has been resolute through its economic interventions to remain above water during this period. 2022 brought a combined impact from ongoing wars and aftereffects of COVID-19. Though creating its own fiscal challenges, we have continued to subsidize our energy costs to buffer households from inflationary pressure of high energy costs. In 2023, we are focused on building on our GDP and sustain the huge surge in the non-oil GDP growth.

The Nigerian Start up Bill has been passed as an Act. This is considered a huge step in lowering our unemployment figures by boosting job creation and supporting the entrepreneurial drive of our youths. If you recall in my 2021 New Year speech, I had mentioned the need to secure the future of our youth recognizing that our young people are our most valuable natural resource, at home and abroad. In this regard, we worked with the legislature to develop an enabling law to turn their passions into ideas that can be supported, groomed and scaled across regions. 2023 will see the implementation of the Nigerian Start Up Act nationwide.

The year 2023 would, indeed, be a time when we would work to solidify on delivering key strategic priorities under our “SEA” – (Security, Economy and Anti-Corruption) Agenda. Some of the key priority areas we would direct our attention and strengths to include:

    a. Focus on SECURITY; we will continue to engage, push back and dismantle the operations of both internal and external extremist and criminal groups waging war against our communities across the Nation. We will also focus on ensuring that free and fair elections would be held come February 2023. Our security forces are working in partnership to ensure the wins we have got in war against insurgency, banditry, secession and other crimes are sustained and more wins acquired.

    b. For the ECONOMY; our focus would be on maintaining and building economic growth through the national economic diversification agenda that supports the goal of national food self-sufficiency and growth in non-oil sources. The ongoing infrastructure revolution by our administration will see us deliver the key projects across the Nation in power, rail, roads, ports and technology.

    c. ANTI-CORRUPTION: On the anti-corruption drive of our administration, we have created new records in this fight, growing from 117 convictions in 2017 to 3,615 convictions as at December 2022. We as a government are committed to ridding our nation of all forms of corruption, through the collaboration with all the arms of Government to effectively prosecute this fight.

As we welcome the New Year, let us look with hope to 2023, a year to move forward as a Nation towards unity, progress and prosperity. I offer my own personal felicitations, mindful of the various opinions and interpretations of our executive legacies. I welcome and accept both the accolades and criticisms in equal measure secure in the conviction that I did my best to serve our dear country Nigeria and I pray that the next President will also pick up the baton and continue the race to make Nigeria one of the leading countries of the world by the end of this century.

Long Live the Nigerian spirit of oneness, togetherness, and unity. Long Live the Federal Republic of Nigeria. A Happy and prosperous New year.

    God bless you.

President Buhari to sign 2023 budget on Tuesday

Senate President, Ahmad Lawan,  made this known while addressing State House correspondents on Friday after a closed-door meeting with the president at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Lawan also disclosed that he discussed some national issues with the President, including the legislature’s support to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the 2023 elections, and Buhari’s recent additional loan request, among others.

According to him: “We’re looking forward to Mr President signing the Appropriation Bill 2023, by the grace of God, on Tuesday.

“This is because we signed the document yesterday, having lost some time because of some anomalous figures we had in the bill presented to the National Assembly.

“But thank God, the NASS [National Assembly] in both chambers passed the Appropriation Bill 2023 on Wednesday.

“And the first thing on Tuesday, I believe that Mr President will be signing the Appropriation Bill 2023.”

How president Buhari stopped EFCC from probing me – Osinbajo

Nigeria’s  Vice-President, Yemi Osinbajo has revealed that the country’s president, Muhammadu Buhari prevented the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from investigating fraud allegations against him when he personally applied for it.

Recall that the house of representatives ad hoc committee on emergency and disaster preparedness in 2018 indicted the governing board of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

Osinbajo was accused of illegally approving N5.8 billion north-east intervention fund while serving as the chairman of the board.

Similarly,  the vice president was alleged to have collected N4 billion from Ibrahim Magu, former acting chairman of the EFCC in 2020.

However, Osinbajo described the claims as “baseless” and asked the former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, to investigate the allegation.

Speaking on Friday at a private dinner to celebrate Buhari’s 80th birthday, Osinbajo said: “One day, I went to him because there were some allegations that were made against me.

“I went to him to show him the letter I’d written to the EFCC to investigate.

“This time he said, ‘VP, why do you worry about all these people? These people just make all sorts of allegations, they make all sorts of stories up, even they are saying that I am about to get married again. And even some foolish people were waiting at the National Mosque, waiting for me to come and marry again,” Osinbajo said.

President Muhammadu Buhari has offered a word of advice to prospective voters in the country, saying that Nigerians should not be afraid of expressing their opinions, adding that they shouldn’t vote against their conscience in the 2023 general elections.

  • CACLN calls on President Buhari to sack CBN governor, Emefiele

CACLN calls on President Buhari to sack CBN governor, Emefiele

A  pro-democracy group, Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders in Nigeria, (CACLN) has called on President  Muhammadu Buhari to immediately sack the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Godwin Emefiele for not doing well in office.

The group has also described Emefiele’s policy as practicing voodoo economics.

Lately, Emefiele has been linked to fraud, diversion of government funds, and perpetuating unwholesome practices in Forex management in the country.

The group made the call when they besieged the Presidential Villa to protest against the continued stay in office of the CBN governor.

The  protest against Emefiele by CACLN witnessed a large turn-out of people.

The protest was tagged ‘Emefiele Must Go’

Addressing journalists during the protest, the Convener of the group, Dauda Yakubu, said Emefiele had desecrated the revered apex bank.

Yakubu lamented that Emefiele had made the country a laughing stock in the comity of nations.

He stressed that Emefiele was not fit to continue in office as CBN governor.

He said: “The Governor of CBN, Godwin Emefiele, has not only desecrated the revered apex Bank in Nigeria but also made the country a laughing stock in the comity of nations.

“His penchant for voodoo economics is also legendary. The policy summersaults and inconsistencies in fiscal policies have indeed hurt the country’s economy in unimaginable ways.

“It remains a mystery how the Governor of the sensitive CBN of a country would engage in partisan politics by vying for the position of President expending billions of naira from the vaults of the Central Bank in his political ambition.”

The group said Emefiele introduced the naira redesign to cover up for some of his anomalies perpetuated in office.

Recall that the new redesigned nairo note from 200 and above has been pushed into circulation since December 15th, 2022.
