National Assembly should be blamed for worsening insecurity in the country – MASSOB

The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra has blamed the National Assembly for the poor handling of the planned impeachment of  President Buhari.

MASSOB posited that the Senate watched helplessly and couldn’t make any meaningful move as the insecurity issues in the country worsened.

MASSOB’s position was made known by the group’s National Director of Information, Sunday Okereafor when he addressed pressmen on Friday.

Okereafor said the goings on in Nigeria were similar to what had happened in countries like Liberia, Serbia, and Yugoslavia, adding that leaders of such nations were meant to face the law for their failure to protect the lives of the citizens.

He said, “The Senate must be held responsible for the killings in the country. The Senate building is very beautiful, but there is no foundation.

“It will fall one day. How can the Senate be there and people are being killed? Tomorrow, you will hear, ‘We will impeach Buhari’; next tomorrow, you will hear again, ‘We will impeach Buhari’.

“Finally, when they give them money, they won’t say anything again. They (senators) should be ashamed of themselves. They should be ashamed that as the pillar of democracy in the nation, they can’t do anything.”

On the ongoing strike by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, he said the Buhari regime was paying lip service to their demands because many top politicians like senators had their children schooling abroad.

“Most of those who call themselves elites are there and ASUU is on strike for over five months. The government cannot even pay the teachers. But they send their children to France, Germany, America a,nd Israel, and abandon their education to die. Most of them are building refineries overseas and NiNigeria’sefineries are in a bad shape.

“Even in the oil-bearing communities, there are no roads. Tell me, the Senate of Nigeria, is it not the upper house in the National Assembly, which should decide what is good for the country and make laws?

“MASSOB and the Biafra Independent Movement are asking, who are they deceiving? Today, tomorrow, we will impeach the President. After collecting money, you won’t hear from them again. It is a shame!”

He added, “Nigerians voted them into office. But what are they doing to help protect the people? How can they be there and insecurity is rising every day?

“The Senate must be brought to justice for allowing the killings in the country. Today they will say impeach Buhari and when they give them money, they will keep quiet. Who are they deceiving? MASSOB and BIM are asking.”

Adesina disclosed this in his weekly article shared on his Facebook titled, ‘I Still Believe In Buhari.’

The article reads in part: “Resentment is a poor prop for anyone to lean on, goes another saying. But not for some Nigerians. Resentment is their daily food and drink, and they heap all the problems in the country on the head of the President if it rains too much.

“Blame Buhari. It doesn’t rain at all. Buhari is the cause. A man gets to bed at night with no power. Buhari oooo. The President is the fall guy for everything.”

Don’t blame Tinubu for Buhari’s failure – Oshiomhole

The Edo-born politician made this statement while granting an interview on Arise TV on Wednesday.

The former APC National Chairman said Nigerians should stop blaming Tinubu for issues with Buhari’s government.

Oshiomhole stressed that the former Lagos State Governor has never held any position in Buhari’s government, adding that the former Lagos Governor has never taken a contract or been part of this government.

He said: “I think in appropriating or apportioning blame or crediting people, you will look at their role.

“It is a fact that Tinubu himself co-founded the APC. But he never participated in governance.

“He never held any position in government. He didn’t carry out any contract on behalf of the government. So how can you credit him either way?

Insecurity: President Buhari pleads for foreign assistance

President Muhammadu Buhari has called for foreign assistance in the country’s mission to tackle insecurity.

Buhari further noted that the problem is not what a single country can effectively contain.

Buhari also commended the collective efforts of nations towards tackling security challenges across the globe, and within Nigeria, urging more collaboration to check terrorism, banditry, and insurgency.

Receiving Letters of Credence from Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ambassador James Kingston Christoff and Ambassador of Mexico to Nigeria, Juan Alfred Miranda Oritz, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, the President told the diplomats that successes in taming insecurity had been recorded through collaboration across borders, and more could be achieved.

This information was contained in a document signed by the president but released by his aide, Special Adviser to the president on Media and Publicity, Chief Femi Adesina.

The statement reads in part: “The devastating effect of global insecurity, climate change, and the post-COVID-19 era has devastated global economies. Nations continue to struggle to recover from these multiple global challenges

“The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine has undermined the progress countries have achieved in tackling food security in the last decade. While, the political instability in Libya continues to fuel terrorism in the Sahel, as well as scuttle democratic sustenance in both West and Central African regions.

“Nigeria is not left out of the equation, as we are fighting to rid our country of banditry, kidnapping, herder/farmer crisis, and insurgency. We are, however, making meaningful progress with the support of friendly countries like yours to sustain these fights until we overcome these challenges.”

At the regional level, Buhari said Nigeria had been working with other Member-States of ECOWAS and other regional blocs, to deal with the problems of terrorism, trans-border crimes, maritime crimes such as piracy and illegal fishing on our waters, illicit drug and human trafficking, banditry, as well as unconstitutional changes of government.

“I believe that matters of security have become the business of all nations as these challenges go beyond the abilities of any single country to effectively contain. The world must, therefore, work closely together and Nigeria counts on your support in cementing the relations between our countries at both bilateral and multilateral levels to surmount these global threats to civilization,” Buhari said.

He urged diplomats to monitor political developments in the country, leading to the 2023 elections, but remain true to their professional ethics of non-interference.

Buhari noted that Nigeria was drawing closer to its national elections and candidates representing their parties at different levels were beginning to build consensus within their respective parties in preparations for the launching of campaigns across the country soon.

“As the drums of campaign begin to rise, I urge you to be guided by diplomatic practice to ensure that your activities remain within the limits of your profession as you monitor the build-up to the elections and the conduct of the general elections,” he said.

The President also advised the diplomats to focus on building on the successes of their predecessors.

He noted, “The tasks before you require you both to build on the successes of your predecessors and further make efforts in the expansion and advancement of the cordial bilateral relations and cooperation between Nigeria and your respective countries. These relations as you all know span across political, socio-economic, and cultural spheres that have over time benefitted our peoples.

“I am confident that, in carrying out your diplomatic responsibilities in the course of your tour of duties, you will spare time to appreciate the uniqueness and strength in our country’s cultural diversities, in terms of both human and natural resources, as well as the flora and fauna across the country.”

He said the cultural diversity of Nigeria “represents our pride as a nation and identity as a people,’’ while urging the diplomats to also build friendships and acquaintances in the course of their stay in the country.

In his remarks, on behalf of the ambassadors, the Canadian High Commissioner thanked the President for the ceremony of accepting the Letters of Credence.

“Today marks the formal beginning of our engagement with the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. We will work closely with ministers and officials to start a progressive relationship,” Christoff said.

*Nigeria security now a thing of grave concern –SGF

Similarly, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Boss Mustapha, has lamented that insecurity was now a thing of concern since all Nigerians were affected by the challenge.

Mustapha said this when the President of the Nation Council of Women Society, NCWS, Lami Adamu Lau, led members of the Women in National Service, WINSERVE, Week Implementation Committee on a visit to his office in Abuja.

The SGF, therefore, urged Nigerians to show concern about the current security challenges in the country.

“I want to appeal to Nigerians to take the issue of security as everybody’s business, it’s not government business, and everyone has a role.

“Constitutionally, the government has the responsibility of providing for the security and wellbeing of the people, but the people have a role to play. Security is everybody’s business, and we should take it as such and it starts from the home,” he said.

Nigerian Nobel laureate, Professor Femi Soyinka, has stated his position on the six weeks ultimatum given to President Buhari to find a solution to incessant attacks and terrorism bedeviling the country or face impeachment.

Soyinka made his position on the matter known when he spoke at an interactive session during the 50th anniversary of the Abeokuta club on Tuesday.

The session, which had a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, the Registrar of the Joint Administration and Matriculation Board, and Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, among others, had as its theme: “Good governance or misgovernance: The contract called democracy.”

Recall that some Senators and members of the House of Representatives elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had last week handed down the ultimatum over lingering insecurity in Nigeria.

Soyinka, who was the session’s moderator, insisted that Buhari should be impeached because he had breached the contract of democracy.

Soyinka said, “Democracy indicates a contract, that is why the candidate puts on a manifesto. Based on that manifesto, the candidate is either accepted or rejected.

“Very often, the grounds for breach of contract, I think we all agree, is misgovernance, and one of the ways of breaking this kind of contract we know even before the duration of a contract is known as impeachment.

“The reason we will go by some legislators to impeach the President who is the head of government. One cleric has gone even further. He believes that the impeachment should take place not in the legislative home, but the bush with the kidnappers and he appealed to the kidnappers to quicken the process by impeaching the President and taking him away and some of his aides and one or two governors.

“Many of us in this country, including governors, including chairmen of local governments, what comprehension they have of this process called a democracy because what these governors are telling us is that after a failure has occupied a seat of government for eight years, that failure should give us another failure for another eight years.”

Abbo cited insecurity and other fundamental issues bedeviling the country as reasons for showing support.

“The Nigerian leader has failed in his fundamental responsibility to secure the lives and property of the people.”

Recall that on Wednesday, Senators of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), and some of the opposition walked out of a Senate plenary session.

The senators walked out over the refusal of the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan to discuss Buhari’s impeachment and a notice served to the president.

The Senators gave Buhari six weeks to resolve the insecurity crisis in the country or they would be forced to impeach him.
