  • Massive protests rock Asia over Trump’s Jerusalem plan

Thousands of protesters in Muslim-majority Indonesia and Malaysia joined rallies on Friday to condemn Washington’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, as authorities tightened security outside U.S. embassies.

Leaders in both Asian countries have joined a global chorus of voices condemning U.S. President Donald Trump’s move.

Several thousand protesters, some shouting anti-U.S. slogans and burning an effigy of Trump, gathered in front of the American embassy in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur.

In Indonesia, hundreds of protesters mostly clad in white were arriving outside the U.S. embassy in Jakarta, capital of the world’s biggest Muslim-majority country.

Some wore checkered scarves and waved Palestinian flags, while others shouted “Allahu Akbar” (God is greatest).

“We have prepared personnel and patrols to secure the U.S. embassy. We are expecting between 500 and 1,000 demonstrators,” said Jakarta police spokesman Argo Yuwono.

The U.S. embassy in Jakarta advised its citizens to avoid areas where there were demonstrations and said its consulate in Indonesia’s second-biggest city Surabaya had suspended public services on Friday.

Indonesia has been a long-running supporter of the two-state solution in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and there have been public demonstrations in support of Palestine in recent years.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo on Thursday urged the United States to reconsider its decision and instructed his foreign minister to summon the U.S. ambassador for an explanation.

In Malaysia, leaders from the ruling party United Malay National Organisation and the popular right wing Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party, led the rally and representatives of the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas are expected to join.

Protests are also expected in South Asia.

Pakistan’s major Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami has announced rallies in all major cities after Friday prayers.

President Trump said on Wednesday that the United States would move its embassy to Jerusalem in the coming years.

Protests have already broken out in the West Bank and the Gaza strip as the Islamist group Hamas urged Palestinians to launch a fresh uprising against Israel.

The status of Jerusalem is one of the thorniest barriers to a lasting Israeli-Palestinian peace.

Its eastern sector was captured by Israel in a 1967 war and annexed in a move not recognised internationally. Palestinians claim East Jerusalem for the capital of an independent state they seek.

  • Patriarchs, Heads of Jerusalem churches pen President Trump last-minute plea

13 Patriarchs and Heads of the main churches in Jerusalem has on Wednesday delivered to U.S. President Donald Trump a last-minute plea, urging him not to change US policy toward Jerusalem for fear this could cause “irreparable harm”.

“We have been following, with concern, the reports about the possibility of changing how the United States understands and deals with the status of Jerusalem,” a letter from them Wednesday said.

“We are certain that such steps will yield increased hatred, conflict, violence and suffering in Jerusalem and the Holy Land, moving us farther from the goal of unity and deeper toward destructive division.

“We ask from you, Mr President, to help us all walk towards more love and a definitive peace, which cannot be reached without Jerusalem being for all,” the letter further stated.

President Trump encouraging violence against reporters – CNN

American basic cable and satellite television news channel, Cable News Network (CNN) is lamenting the tweet jabs US President Donald Trump is throwing at the TV network.

GOP strategist and CNN commentator, Ann Navaro called the President’s tweets an incitement to violence against reporters.

“This is just going way too far,” she said, adding: “The president of the United States is inciting violence against the free press. In America we cannot stand for it.”

In what the president claimed was a “modern day presidential” use of social media, President Donald Trump tweeted a video of him assaulting a wrestler with the CNN logo superimposed on his face.

He included #FraudNewsCNN and #FNN in his tweet, two hashtags he has recently introduced in his continued loggerhead attacks against the network owned by the Turner Broadcasting System division of Time Warner, and founded in 1980 by American media proprietor Ted Turner.

“It is a sad day when the President of the United States encourages violence against reporters.

“Instead of preparing for his overseas trip, his first meeting with Vladimir Putin, ‎dealing with North Korea and working on his health care bill, he is involved in juvenile behaviour far below the dignity of his office,” said CNN in a statement.

“My use of social media is not Presidential – it’s modern day presidential. Make America Great Again!” Trump submitted in his modern day presidential tweet.

However, CNN said, it is unfazed by the president’s antics.

“It is disgusting by this president, yet one more disgusting act.

“We will keep doing our jobs. He should start doing his,” the statement added.

Donald Trump presidency has been matched by a steady flow of protests since after his election and inauguration, and his antagonism against the media is something else. It is yet to be seen when this antagonism will stop.

  • President Trump gets ‘new Twitter bot Press Secretary’

President Trump gets ‘new Twitter bot Press Secretary’

The often flippant, emotional stream of tweets from President Trump never ceases to amaze, particularly since it is, for all intents and purposes, filled with official messages from the White House.

Now, thanks to one clever Twitter user, we can view those often bombastic, poorly worded, and downright trivial tweets in their proper context: official White House statements.

On Sunday, Twitter user Russel Neiss launched a new Twitter bot called Real Press Sec., which takes Trump’s tweets and presents them in the familiar form of an official White House press statement. The effect of seeing Trump’s social media bloviation as history-framed, official-looking statements from the nation’s highest office is devastatingly poignant.

    https://twitter.com/RealPressSecBot/status/871475865942503425

Neiss says he was inspired to create the bot, which took just an hour of coding to put together (since the code was based on his work on an earlier Twitter bot, @stl_manifest), by tweets from former Obama White House staffer Pat Cunnane‏ and New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman.

The bot searches for new @realdonaldtrump tweets every 15 minutes and if it finds a new one posts it on the Real Press Sec. Twitter account in White House statement format.

    https://twitter.com/RealPressSecBot/status/871475906535084032

Since Trump took office, he’s continued sending the same kinds of colorful messages via Twitter he sent while operating as a private citizen.

But in recent months, the running logic from some Trump supporters has been that we shouldn’t take those messages from the president that seriously since “it’s just Twitter.”

But this Twitter bot destroys that pretense and reminds us that the man who has his “finger on the button” as leader of the United States, is using the country’s most powerful office to say things many thought they’d never hear come from the halls of the White House.

  • India’s pathway to selling only electric cars by 2030

India’s pathway to selling only electric cars by 2030

While the United States is walking away from the historic Paris Climate Agreement, India is making a bold vow to start selling only electric cars by 2030.

India is one of the world’s most polluted countries. Its energy department said in a blog post that it has set the “ambitious” target to stop selling gas-powered vehicles in an attempt to clean up its air.

As the country’s economy has boomed, new industries and commuters have spewed pollutants in the air at staggering rates. Now, its 1.3 billion residents are suffering. One estimate says India’s air contributes to 1.2 million deaths per year. Doctors have said breathing the air in New Dehli, the nation’s capital, is like smoking 10 cigarettes a day.

India’s energy minister, Piyush Goyal, said recently that the country will help facilitate the electric car effort by offering subsidies for a couple of years. “After that,” he said, “the cost of electric vehicles will start paying for themselves.”

The government’s National Electric Mobility Mission Plan wants annual sales of electric and hybrid cars to hit 6 million to 7 million by 2020.

That’s music to the ears of Elon Musk, CEO of electric car powerhouse Tesla, who touted the decision on Twitter Thursday.

Tesla hasn’t actually entered the Indian market yet, but Musk has frequently talked about his plans to open up shop there. He said earlier this year that it could happen by summer, but those plans appear to be delayed.

India is anxiously awaiting Tesla’s arrival. Even the head of Mahindra, India’s leading electric carmaker, told Musk he’ll welcome the competition.

“The more the merrier — and greener,” Anand Mahindra wrote.

Plans to aggressively expand the number of electric cars on the road is just one of a number of ways India is trying to go greener. The government is also underway on major pushes to expand its solar energy capacity.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also doubled down on his commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement after President Trump rebuked the pact on Thursday.

He was in France on Saturday meeting with French President Emanuel Macron, who also strongly condemned Trump’s decision.

“Paris Agreement is a shared legacy of the world. It will benefit the future generations as well,” Modi wrote on Twitter.

  • India Infosys plans to hire 10,000 U.S. workers

India’s U.S. based IT services firm, Infosys Ltd said late on Monday that it plans to hire 10,000 American workers in the next two years and open four technology centres in the United States, starting with a centre this August in Indiana, the home state of Vice President Mike Pence.

The move comes at a time when Infosys and some of its Indian peers such as Tata Consultancy Services and Wipro have become political targets in the United States for allegedly displacing jobs of American workers by flying in foreign workers on temporary visas to service their clients in the country.

The IT service firms rely heavily on the H1-B visa programme, which President Trump has ordered federal agencies to review.

In a telephone interview with Reuters from Indiana, Infosys CEO, Vishal Sikka said his company plans to hire American workers in fields such as artificial intelligence.

He said the firm has already hired 2,000 American workers as part of a previous effort started in 2014.

“When you think about it from a US point of view, obviously creating more American jobs and opportunities is a good thing,” Sikka said.

  • France, Germany gang up against Trump

France and Germany have formed a united front against President Donald Trump following the announcement of travel ban by his government. A spokesman for Chancellor Angela Merkel says the German leader believes the Trump’s travel ban on people from some Muslim-majority countries is wrong.

After meeting on Saturday, the foreign ministers of both nations, Jean-Marc Ayrault and Germany’s Sigmar Gabriel, said they hope to meet with the Secretary of State nominee Rex Tillerson. Ayrault said Trump’s order on Friday that banning refugees “can only worry us.”

“We have signed international obligations, so welcoming refugees fleeing war and oppression forms part of our duties,” the French minister said.

“There are many other issues that worry us,” he added. “That is why Sigmar and I also discussed what we are going to do. When our colleague, Tillerson, is officially appointed, we will both contact him.” Gabriel said offering refuge to the persecuted are western values that Europe and the United States share.

“Love thy neighbor is part of this tradition, the act of helping others,” he said. “This unites us, we Westerners. “I think that this remains a common foundation that we share with the United States, one we aim to promote.”

Trump said the ban was necessary in preventing “radical Islamic terrorists” from entering the U.S. Merkel and Trump spoke on Saturday for the first time since his inauguration but there was no mention of the travel ban or refugees was mentioned in their joint U.S.-German statement following the call.

Germany’s DPA news agency quoted Merkel’s spokesman Steffen Seibert saying that “she is convinced that even the necessary, resolute fight against terrorism doesn’t justify putting people of a particular origin or particular faith under general suspicion.”
