President Buhari rejects parts of the Electoral Bill, gives reasons

President Muhammadu Buhari, on Friday, rejected of Section 84 (12) of the signed Electoral law, saying it runs contrary to the nation’s constitution.

This is as the President said that (Amendment) law 2022, hold the Electoral Acts a lot of promise for improving the election processes, with introduction of new technology, and efforts to engender clarity and transparency.

At a signing ceremony held at the Council Chambers, Presidential Villa, Abuja, President Buhari, told the National Assembly to immediately commence the process of amending Section 84 (12) of the law.

He noted that it disqualifies political office holders from voting or being voted for at conventions or congresses of any political party, for the purpose of the nomination of candidates for any election.

He said that he received inputs from relevant ministries, departments and agencies of government after careful and thorough reviews of the Bill and its implications to democratic processes in our country.

Expressing his rejection of Section 84 (12) of the new law, President Buhari said: “Distinguished Senators and Honourable members of the National Assembly, from the review it is my perspective that the substance of the Bill is both reformative and progressive.

“I am making this bold declaration because I foresee the great potentials of the Bill.

“Worthy of note include the democratic efficacy of the Bill with particular reference to sections 3, 9(2), 34, 41, 47, 84(9), (10) and (11) among others.

“This, however, cannot be said about one provision as contained in the proposed Bill, which provision constitutes fundamental defect, as it is in conflict with extant constitutional provisions.

“Section 84 (12) constitutes a disenfranchisement of serving political office holders from voting or being voted for at Conventions or Congresses of any political party, for the purpose of the nomination of candidates for any election in cases where it holds earlier than 30 days to the National Election.”

Buhari said quoted the section: “84(12) No political appointee at any level shall be voting delegate or be voted for at the Convention or Congress of any political party for the purpose of the nomination of candidates for any election.”

    Buhari explains rejection

The President noted it had introduced qualification and disqualification criteria that ultra vires the Constitution by way of importing blanket restriction and disqualification to serving political office holders. of which they are constitutionally accorded protection.

“The practical application of section 84(12) of the Electoral Bill, 2022 will, if assented to, by operation of law, subject serving political office holders to inhibitions and restrictions referred to under section 40 and 42 of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

“It is imperative to note that the only constitutional expectation placed on serving political office holders that qualify, by extension as public officers within the context of the constitution is resignation, withdrawal or retirement at least 30 days before the date of the election.

“Hence, it will be stretching things beyond the constitutional limit to import extraneous restriction into the constitution on account of practical application of section 84(12) of the bill where political parties’ conventions and congresses were to hold earlier than 30 days to the election.

“Arising from the foregoing, with particular regards to the benefits of the Bill, industry, time, resources and energy committed in its passage, I hereby assent to the Bill and request the Nationally Assembly consider immediate amendments that will bring the Bill in tune with constitutionality by way of deleting section 84 (12) accordingly.’’

President Buhari commended the National Assembly for their commitment and dedication to improving the previous Electoral Bill 2021.

  • The kind of president Nigeria needs in 2023 – Olubadan designate

The kind of president Nigeria needs in 2023 – Olubadan designate

The Olubadan of Ibadan designate, Dr Lekan Balogun, says Nigeria needs a strong leader that will further strengthen its unity comes 2023.

Balogun made the assertions on Sunday in Ibadan while receiving Bola Tinubu, a Presidential Aspirant and National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in his Alarere residence.

Tinubu, a former Governor of Lagos State, had visited the traditional ruler to seek his blessings and support of Ibadan people on his presidential ambition.

Balogun, who spoke through his brother, Sen. Kola Balogun (PDP-Oyo South), said that the situation in the country currently, called for a leader that would further strengthen its unity.

The Olubadan designate said that he had known Tinubu for a long time and his antecedents as the governor who laid the foundation of the present Lagos.

“Yorubas are the leading light of Nigeria, our people contributed a lot to make Nigeria what it is and without the Yorubas, Nigeria cannot be where it is today.

“But, it is very sad to note the ‘to your tent oh Israel’ that has of recent become the sing-song of the people.

“We are looking forward to a Yoruba president that will further strengthen and unite the country comes 2023.

“We need a leader that has national focus and acceptability; the road may be rough, but, by God’s grace, you will triumph,” he said.

Earlier, Tinubu expressed strong determination in his quest to become the nation’s president comes 2023.

The former Lagos State Governor said he was honoured to be in Ibadan to solicit the support of Olubadan and the people of Ibadan, and therefore, called for their prayers on his presidential ambition.

According to him, this period is historical and reminder of history.

“Each time a Yoruba wants to be president, issues are raised, questions are asked and all sorts of hang-up are encountered.

“We are at a crossroad, people are volunteering to confront me when they were asked that who would confront the Lion of Bourdilon,” he said.

Tinubu expressed his readiness and determination, saying no intimidation or blackmail could stop him from pursuing his quest for the presidency.

“I’m out to become President of Nigeria. No intimidation, no blackmail can stop me.

“I have read about a Greek Philosopher that if you want to fight a pig, you must be ready to be smeared and I’m ready to be dirty,” he said.

Tinubu, however, congratulated the new Olubadan for the grace to ascend the throne, which he said, would give the ancient city a new outlook.

He said that this was in consideration of the robust background of Balogun as an educationist, politician of progressive leaning and a humanist.

Among those who joined Balogun to receive Tinubu were his wife, Olori Olufunmilayo, Otun Balogun of Ibadanland, High Chief Tajudeen Ajibola and Ekaarun Olubadan, High Chief Hamidu Ajibade.

Others are former Minister of Industries, Chief (Mrs) Onikepo Akande and Mutiat, wife of former Gov. Rashidi Ladoja.

2023: I am ready to play it dirty, Bola Tinubu vows

Presidential aspirant and leader of the All Progressives Congress APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has vowed that he is ready to play it dirty to achieve his life long ambition to become president in 2023.

Tinubu made this threat, during his consultation with the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi and the Olubadan-designate, Oba Lekan Balogun.

Hear him: “No amount of intimidation can stop me. I am ready to get dirty. I am out to become President of Nigeria. We are at a crossroads.”

Speaking earlier at the Alaafin’s palace, he said: “I cannot embark on a project of such magnitude without seeking for prayers and cooperation of the traditional rulers.

“I am here to inform our fathers of my decision to run for the position of the President of this country in 2023. What I need from our highly reverred traditional rulers are their prayers and cooperation.

“Today, by the special grace of God in Yorubaland unlike before we have the Vice-President, the Minister of Works, Interior and Sports but we still need more.”

Responding, Oba Adeyemi, who invoked the spirits of his fore-bearers, said his request has been granted.

He said all the ancestors of Yorubaland would work in his favour and answer his prayers.

He, therefore, asked the 10 Oke-Ogun traditional rulers in attendance at the meeting whether they were in support of his decision, and their response was: “We are fully in support.”

Serbia president praises Djokovic’s ‘great fight’ in Australia

Serbia’s president, Aleksandar Vucic, has praised tennis star Novak Djokovic for his “great fight” in the bid to play at the Australia Open in spite of not being vaccinated against COVID-19.

An Australian Federal Court last month decided to cancel the world number one’s visa after days of wrangling over the country’s COVID-19 entry rules.

The situation forced him to miss the Grand Slam tournament and return to Serbia.

“Thank you for the great fight you fought in Australia,” Vucic told Djokovic during a meeting in Belgrade on Thursday.

Vucic, a populist who is bidding for re-election in April, said he spoke with Djokovic as soon as he heard about the problems in Australia and told him to come home.

“And then I saw how … he was ready to fight not only for himself, but for his country,” the Serbia president said.

Djokovic, who previously refused to speak about the events in Australia, told Vucic he was grateful for the support, adding that he would address the public within seven to 10 days.

“You have stood behind me and placed yourself in a compromised political position in international relations, and I am … extremely grateful. I will remember that,” he said.

Djokovic’s treatment has been described as “scandalous” by the government in Belgrade and has soured relations between Serbia and Australia.

  • The End of your Rule is Near – By Hope Eghagha

The End of your Rule is Near – By Hope Eghagha

    By Hope O’Rukevbe Eghagha

The end of your rule is near. Mr. President. Mr. Governor. Mr. Speaker. Mr. Chairman. Mr. Legislator. The end of your rule is here. It has been four, eight, sixteen years since you danced into State or Legislative House after election victory. Or after a dubious victory awarded by a dubious court after dubious monies dubiously exchanged hands. Your humility while you sought votes was legendary. You shook hands, hugged cripples, visited the bereaved, paid school fees, and ate with the sick. You built alliances across zones, across religious groups, economic groups, across social groups. You made promises. You raised hopes. You preached unity. Now that the end is here, let us ask you Mr. Chief Executive, what kind of ruler, what kind of leader, what kind of administrator have you been? Did you dash hopes? Are you leaving the people worse than they were when you came into office? Did you create a few super rich, from your ethnic group, from your religious group, from your family? Are the people beating their drums in joy on the imminence of your departure? Will they start to ignore you from June this year when you become a lame duck? Are you now worried about how freely you can walk after you leave office?

It is one of the beauties of democracy, beginning and end of tenure. You give account to the people, to posterity, and to the Great Judge ultimately. Because there is end of tenure, there are marginalised persons who wait for the end to come. Those you may have locked up in time or physically or psychologically. These hope that once you are gone, freedom will come their way, there will be a restoration. Also, the wrong policies which you have enunciated will be thrown into the dustbin. Those who had barely tolerated your greed or your foolishness or your wicked, selfish ways will now openly despise you. The sycophants who had licked your boots with histrionic relish will now move on to the new power base, forgetting you, cursing you and blaming the woes of their ancestors on you. You will become history, bad history if you have been a bad ruler. It is the story of the world; it is the story of life and the iterative narrative of humanity. Yet, we, the rulers and the ruled, never learn. The tragedy of man, according to Nietzsche, is that he forgets.

Memory is the strength of the wise. Memory is the strength of successful societies. Institutional memory. Memory is the strength of successful nations. That ability never to forget the circumstances of their existence, their history, and their identity. In great societies, there is no collective amnesia. Some individuals may forget. But the institution that is the State never forgets. Some facts may slip into amnesia. But they will crawl back in the day of reckoning. Knowledge of the past is instructive and fundamental to building the future. So, our philosophers teach us. I remember Ernest Hemingway when he says ‘a man is a sum of his memories’!

O mighty ruler, the bearded one with oil stains on his white robe, all the roads and projects which you concentrated in your own part of the land, all the appointments which you made to favour a section of the electorate, and/or your cronies will now haunt you. The viciousness with which you dealt with supposed enemies will haunt you. If you ignored the interest of the people to pursue your narrow selfish interests, it will be time to splash your acts of impunity on the pages of newspapers and social media. Did you think you were God when you kept people waiting for you, while you made older people kneel to you to make their requests? The people will soon say to you: ‘command no more, your rule is over’, as Creon tells the mighty Oedipus in Antigone in Sophocles’ classical play!

A fool can and could win elections in Nigeria. But a fool cannot govern like a wise man, because a fool can only do foolish things that could hurt the people. An idiot or a man with idiotic ideas could win elections anywhere in the world. Demagoguery often starts from idiotic ideas and sentiments couched in fanciful or pseudo nationalistic language. Argentinian singer and author once wrote: ‘my grandfather was a brave man; he was only afraid of idiots. I asked him why, and he answered: because there are too many of them, and by being a majority they could even elect a president’. So, we are also worried about the people, the mob that Shakespeare despised in his plays, describing them through one of his characters in Julius Caesar as ‘you blocks, you stones, you worse than senseless things, you hard hearts, you cruel men of Rome’. Men and women who sell their soul for a mess of the proverbial pottage. They who would vote for the idiot who may not do much to improve their lot. These are the type the Prophet Hosea has in mind when he says ‘my people are destroyed for lack of knowledge!

Real leadership is for the wise, the humble, and the visionary. A myopic man in office brings the office to his level. That is dangerous to our collective survival. Of such men we must beware. A fool should not go near the throne. He will endanger the empire. For this reason, blockheads were precluded from the throne in traditional African societies. Even the deformed were asked to go away from the road to the throne. In the modern age, thieves or crooks win elections all over the world. Crookedness could be hidden from the people. It is often in the dark. In saner climes, crooks get booted out. In our land, they seek and win elective positions because they carry a deep pocket.

It is true that some current leaders or elected officials have been misjudged. As we know, there are some who have made a difference, who have touched lives, who have sacrificed a lot for the people. But all state officials are judged harshly on account of prevailing situations. Hunger, real hunger, is real in the land. People are barely able to feed. Inflation is near the sun. Insecurity is real. So, the people are frustrated. They are angry. And their judgment will be harsh. It is possible that with the passing of time, opinions would be moderated. For that time, we must wait though not everyone will be exonerated, not everyone will be around for the beauty of reversals. It is the way of man, it is the way of life!

Mr Elected or Appointed Official, your time is up, the end is here. Those you have alienated, some who did a kind thing for you in the past, some who supported your election and were subsequently ignored by your ‘Almighty Self’, some you gave contracts and refused to pay for work done, some who fell under the moving bus because you listened to gossip and gave them no chance to defend themselves, some who were shoved from the inner table because they are not brothers and sisters from your ethnic group, they await your exit. The time has come when you must rise from the level of the beast that was Nebuchadnezzar and come to your senses. They will see you in public and walk past you in scorn. Or bring down the statues you erected as it happened in Imo State after the last governor left office. There will be money in your deep pocket, but there will be no political power in your hands, there will only be infant gums without teeth to bite the sweets of the world. What have you wrought O Elected Official, what have you wrought in the land of the living?

I want to become APC chairman not Nigeria president – Modu-Sheriff

Former Borno Governor Senator Ali Modu Sheriff on Friday said he is not interested in the presidency but the national chairmanship of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

He made this declaration during an interactive session with newsmen in Abuja.

According to him: “So many insinuations are going around, Ali Modu Sheriff is not looking for Chairman; he is looking to be Presidential candidate.

“Please, I want to put it on record today, I am not looking for President. I am looking for a National Chairman so that I could lead the party to victory.

“I want to lead a campaign like what we did to 2014 to make sure that our father and leader (Buhari) hands over power to another APC man as a President.

“If I want to be President, I am not afraid of anybody but I don’t want to be President but National Chairman.”

  • Brazilian President Bolsonaro hospitalised with intestinal blockage

Brazilian President Bolsonaro hospitalised with intestinal blockage

Brazilian President, Jair Bolsonaro, was taken to hospital in São Paulo on Monday with a suspected intestinal blockage.

The 66-year-old was admitted for treatment after complaining of “abdominal discomfort,” the government said in a statement on Tuesday.

According to the g1 news website, he was flown to the hospital from Santa Catarina, where he was holidaying on the southern coast of Brazil.

In an updated report late Monday citing the hospital, the government said the president was showing improvement after a nasal tube was inserted.

According to the report, he no longer has fever nor abdominal pain again, he was seen taking a short walk in the corridors of the hospital.

“It is not yet clear if more treatment is necessary.”

The right-wing populist politician was diagnosed with an intestinal blockage back in July, after which he spent several days in a São Paulo hospital.

This time around, Bolsonaro’s doctor, Antônio Luiz Macedo, interrupted his own holiday in the Bahamas to return to Brazil to treat the president, g1 reported.

Macedo operated on Bolsonaro after a knife attack during the 2018 election campaign that left him in a critical condition.

At the campaign event in September 2018, a mentally ill man stabbed Bolsonaro, seriously damaging his abdomen.

The former army captain continued campaigning from hospital and won the presidential election a month later.

Bolsonaro was forced to undergo several operations when he took office in early 2019, including surgery to repair his intestinal tract.

Tinubu 2023 presidential ambition revealed, sorting out declaration date

The National Leader of the All Progressive Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu will contest in the 2023 Presidential elections.

Director-General, Bola Tinubu Support Group Management Council, Abdulmumini Jibrin Kofa confirmed the report.

Speaking while conducting what he termed International Press Conference to start up the 2022 New Year, Kofa, who is a former House of Representatives member said, “Tinubu’s Presidential contest is a done deal”.

He said in his position as the DG Highest Management Campaign Council of Bola Tinubu, which is overseeing over 2000 other APC National Leader Campaign Councils, “I have the full authority and mandate today, to say that Tinubu will go for the Presidency in 2023”.

Kofa, who described Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi and the Vice President Osibanjo speculative Presidential Contests as a huge jokes which is going no where, added that, “Bola Tinubu will certainly be in the Presidency comes 2023”.

He said, “Bola Tinubu has the pedigree to go for the Presidency, has an edge over any other person, be it in APC or PDP contesting the Presidency and I bet you by the year 2023, you will see Tinubu in the Villa.

“Let me tell you, any other person seeking for the Nigeria exalted seat, more specifically in the APC is a joker and a player, forget the insinuations. Tinubu is biggest and highest contender that would make it to the Presidency come 2023”.

He added that, “Bola Tinubu is a full blown Nigeriain, somebody with large heart, that will take everybody on board, and has the determination, zeal, courage and above all he has the competence by what he has done in Lagos as Governor for eight years”.

While commenting on a possible Dark Horse emerging from either PDP or APC in 2023, Kofa hinted that that such was not possible.

On Tinubu’s health position to contest the Presidency, Kofa insisted that the man in question is highly fit and alright to stand for the Job.

  • Abia State Governor, Ikpeazu visits Buhari, explains why South East region should produce president in 2023

Abia State Governor, Ikpeazu visits Buhari, explains why South East region should produce president in 2023

The Governor of Abia State, Okezie Ikpeazu has said that the Southeast has a right to produce Nigeria’s next president because the people have a better understanding of Nigeria as a whole.

Ikpeazu made this assertion today after a visit to President Muhammadu Buhari in his office at the State House.

“I think that the southeasterners have a right to take a shot at the presidency of Nigeria and I dare say that our qualification starts from the fact that we understand and know Nigeria better than the other states of Nigeria.

“I dare say, this is my opinion. We go everywhere, we are everywhere, we invest everywhere, we are Pan-Nigerian people,” the governor declared.

On a lighter note, he added, “Today, a lot of people are afraid of Sambisa, but for an Igbo man, Sambisa is a business opportunity,” he grinned.

In a chat with State House correspondents, Ikpeazu listed some qualities that Nigeria’s next leader must possess and urged Nigerians and political parties to be magnanimous and consider the yearnings and aspirations of the southeast geo-political zone.

“The question of Nigeria president of southeast extraction is a national question that required negotiation, discussion and conversation with all parts of this country and I am least qualified to determine what happened in 2023.

“I also want to spend my time supporting the incumbent president to do his time and do his best while we wait for what happens to begin to unfold. So, these are my views about the presidency

“In first place, anybody who wants to aspire to the highest post of the presidency, it doesn’t matter where you come from, must have what I regard as Pan-Nigerian mentality. He must be somebody who has an understanding of all the contending interests and influences in this country. He must understand that we are a country of diversity with the different persuasions, traditional, cultural, religious and all of these must be put at a place where you can understand and respect them.

“That individual must also be somebody who is ready to accommodate the youths of this country because turning it into a slogan the fact that youths are our leaders of our future have bit sever us correctly because we are drifting into an age that youths understand which many people may not understand, those who grew up before this era.

“So, that people must be willing to accommodate the youth without necessarily throwing away very experienced ones, he must be able to find a labyrinth of all the interests.

“He must also reflect an extreme women agenda. Such a must also be in investor-friendly, he must be and individual who understands the nuances of economics and what is the relationship between international politics and economy and the person must be strong enough to face up to the issue on the front burner, which is security.

“He must be able to create jobs, he must be able to not deploy the kinetic device all the time, he must able to also listen and negotiate peace.

“I’m a Christian and religion believes that you seek peace and you will find it. So, that which you seek is not commonplace. So, must be able to dredge up courage to listen to one another and then find a middle course all the time for the interest of our people.

“What the political parties need to do. Well, the political parties need to be sensitive to the feelings of the various contending ground because politics should not be a winners take all thing.

“It’s not at all times that you want to use your might, at times you listen even to those whom you think are weak or those whom you think may not be able to find themselves at the centre stage due to circumstances.

“Because of you don’t do that, you will bottle up sentiments that will implode the system going forward. So, you must be able to create ventilations from here and there so that you can accommodate diverse opinions and have strategies to help you run the country.

“So, all the political parties should be alive to this sentiments and feelings in taking decisions going forward. And we are at a critical point in our history and anything that is self-serving, anything that is selfish, anything that is leads to winner take all mentality should be jettisoned at this time. We need to rescue our nation; we need to work hard to put Nigeria in a strong footing before we can begin to look at other things.

“So, if we have this at the back of our minds, my thinking is that we will arrive at the fact that there is a geo-political zone that has been clamoring and yearning for an opportunity to lead.

“And we should be gracious and magnanimous enough to give consideration to such yearnings and aspiration.

“But as I said earlier it cannot not be done in isolation. It’s not a matter right, it’s not a matter of ‘I have to.’ It’s a matter of negotiation, conversation and discussion going forward.

“And I think Nigeria is alive to all of that. We can find people who listen,” Governor Ikpeazu enunciated.

He emphasized that he is not interested in the presidency, noting that he is very busy as governor and “thinking about what I will become now will amount to shortchanging my people who gave me a mandate for an initial four years and renewed it for another four years and it will terminate around May 2023”.

According to Ikpeazu, it will be self-serving for him to begin to think about what he will become instead of concentrating on serving his people for the period which he has been elected to serve.

2023: Edwin Clark receives Anyim Pius Anyim, says South-East must produce next president

Elder statesman and leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Chief Edwin Clark, has insisted that the South-East geopolitical zone must produce the next president of Nigeria.

He said this when a presidential aspirant, Sen. Anyim Pius Anyim, visited him on Friday.

Clark encouraged Anyim to work hard with other leaders across the country to build consensus for equity and unity in Nigeria, according to a statement after the visitation.

Chief Clark reaffirmed his passionate “belief that the presidency of Nigeria in 2023 must go to the Southern part of Nigeria and indeed to South-East zone”.

“I encourage you and others to continue the task of persuading and reassuring other Nigerians to share that vision”, Clark added.

Anyim told the elder statesman and First Republic Minister of Information that he was running for the Presidency of Nigeria because he understood the challenges facing Nigeria and had what it takes to fix them.

The former Senate President who is contesting the presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party took the opportunity to consult with Clark on the state of the nation and his plan for the future.

“I thank God that Chief Edwin Clark will soon be 95 years old and yet he is blessed with phenomenal memory, lucid and curious mind, a benevolent heart, and boundless goodwill for all men. I thank God for your health and will forever cherish your counsel.

“I will dedicate myself with full enthusiasm and conviction to advance the vision of equity in Nigeria, the unity of our nation, the peace and prosperity of all citizens,” he said.
