  • Trump is oldest US president ever inaugurated

Newly inaugurated president of the United States, Donald Trump is the oldest president in history to be inaugurated, at age 70 years and 220 days, according to records.

The 45th president of the U.S., who was inaugurated on Friday, was born on June 14, 1946 and would turn 71 this year.

Before Trump’s inauguration, former President Ronald Reagan was the oldest president.

Reagan was 69 years and 349 days when he took the oath of office, just a few weeks before his 70th birthday.

Aside being the oldest president inaugurated, Trump’s election was also significant because it marked a campaign in which a figure with no political experience or military background clinched the presidency.

Apart from his lack of political and military experience, Trump’s inauguration also marked the first time in history that the U.S. will be having six living presidents at the same time.

The living U.S. Presidents are Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama and Trump.

The First Lady, Melania Trump, is the first U.S. first lady without an American parent.

She is also the second first lady born outside the U.S. – in Slovenia.

Before Melania, only one first lady, Louisa Catherine Adams, wife of John Quincy Adams, the sixth U.S. president (1825 to 1829) had been born outside the U.S. – in London to an English mother and an American father.

John F. Kennedy is the youngest-ever elected U.S. President aged 43.

However, Theodore Roosevelt is the youngest person to ever become president.

He was 42 when he became president, following the assassination of William McKinley, according to records.

Gambia’s President-elect, Adama Barrow, has announced that his inauguration will take place at the country’s Embassy in Senegal on Thursday.

  • Former Iranian president Rafsanjani dies aged 82

Former Iranian president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani died Sunday in Tehran at the age of 82, Iranian state media reports said.

Rafsanjani had been admitted to hospital in the Iranian capital during the morning with cardiac arrhythmia.

The cleric was one of the architects of the Islamic Revolution that deposed the shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, in 1979 and established a religious state.

Considered a moderate and mentor of current President Hassan Rowhani, Rafsanjani served as president between 1989 and 1997. He was also one of the richest men in the country.

Born in 1934 in Bahreman in the south-east of the country, the cleric worked his way up the political ladder to become chairman of the parliament, before achieving the presidency.

When he left the presidency he successfully campaigned for reformist Mohammad Khatami to replace him, setting him on a collision course with the hardline elements in government.

In 2005, he stood again for the presidency, but was defeated by the relatively unknown Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Following Ahmadinejad’s victory, he isolated himself increasingly from the arch-conservative clergy, actively campaigning against the hardliners, who branded him a dissident and banned him from leading Friday prayers in Tehran.

Rafsanjani did not retire and returned to the political stage in 2013 when his protege Rowhani won the presidential election and went on to seal a nuclear deal with the international community, leading to the lifting of sanctions, which had been so punishing for Iran.

  • Only God can stop me from becoming president in 2019 – Sule Lamido

Only God can stop me from becoming president in 2019 – Sule Lamido

Immediate past governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has said that only God can stop him from becoming Nigeria’s president in 2019, if he decides to contest.

According to a report by The Sun, Lamido made this claim on Sunday night, after policemen were reportedly deployed to Bamaina village of Birnin Kudu, to stop a rally organized by youths urging him to run in the next general elections.

“The desperation by those in authorities of power today must know that the same God that have made Balewa, Ironsi, Gowon, Murtala, Shagari, Buhari, Babangida and Jonathan Presidents could do the same for me if Allah so wishes,” Lamido told pressmen.

“All this coercion and intimidation was because of my aspiration and I must tell them that no matter what, if Allah has destined that I will be President, they cannot stop me or deter me because that will amount to fighting against the wish of God.

“Leaders should beware of the consequences that followed tyranny, impunity and abuse of human dignity.

Speaking further, he added: “I am their father and they are coming to greet me and you are saying they have to ask for permit, permit for what?

“All over this country I’ve never heard of a mutual gathering that requires one to ask for permit, even on Saturday, we were in Sokoto for a wedding where thousands of people attended or even naming ceremonies where hundreds attend, have you asked them to show their permit?, but because it’s Sule Lamido, whoever that is coming to see me must acquire a permit to do so”.

Speaking to the youths, he said: “If your prayers for me to be the President of this country is the wish of Allah, let it be, for Allah is the One that made others like Jonathan, Tafawa Balewa, Obasanjo.”

  • Senate to remove immunity for President, VP, Governors, others

Senate to remove immunity for President, VP, Governors, others

The Senate has commenced the process of amending section 308 of the 1999 Constitution which gives immunity to president, vice president, governors and deputy governors in the country.

According to a report by Daily Trust, a bill sponsored by Senator Ovie Omo-Agege on the immunity removal has been referred to the Senate Committee on Constitution amendment chaired by the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu.

The bill proposed the substitution of subsection 308(2) which reads “the provisions of subsection (1) of this section shall not apply to civil proceedings against a person to whom this section applies in his official capacity or to civil or criminal proceedings in which such a person is only a nominal party”, with a new section.

The proposed amendment reads, “the provisions of subsection (1) of this section shall not apply to, (a) ‘civil proceedings against a person to whom this section applies in his official capacity or to civil or criminal proceedings in which such a person is only a nominal party’.

It (b) part reads, “criminal proceedings connected to, related to or arising from economic and financial crimes”.

Omo-Agege said like in the US, the president and the VP, governors and their deputies should only be immune from civil actions arising from their official actions while in office.

“They are not entitled to immunity from litigation for actions not germane to their work. For example a president or governor who buys a car for a child and refuses to pay can be taken to court while in office,” he said.

“Also like in the US, there should be no immunity from criminal investigation or prosecution for crimes committed either before or while in office.

“Recall that Mr. Spiro Agnew while a sitting VP under President Nixon was tried and convicted for tax evasion while in office. Bill Clinton as a sitting president was hauled before a grand jury by Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr for perjury (lying under oath) while in office as president.

“Finally, Elliot Spitzer as a sitting governor of New York was tried and convicted for illicit solicitation for sex”, he added.

Omo-Agege believes that if the amendment is passed, there will be sanity, transparency and accountability in the Executive Arm of government, especially “Treatment of our state resources which most of them currently treat as slush funds”.
