I nearly quit 2023 presidential race – President Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said he nearly guit the 2023 presidential race.

The President said this at a special Iftar held in his honour at the Presidential Villa on Saturday night.

President Tinubu thanked guests for their presence, prayers, and contributions to the nation’s development, and appreciated Nigerians for their outpouring of goodwill and prayers as he marked his 73rd birthday.

Reflecting on his political journey, President Tinubu recounted a moment of doubt during the 2023 election campaign when he contemplated withdrawing from the race after an encounter with a close relative.

“Those close to me know that the odds were against me. During the campaigns, one of them came to my living room around 3:30 a.m. and said he needed just N50,000 to buy foodstuff for our uncle.

“He told me, ‘The currency is gone because of you. People are jumping over bank counters because there is no cash. Our uncle, a wealthy man, doesn’t even have N10,000 in cash. What are you running for?

“I told him, ‘I am running for President, not for you and our uncle.’ I gave him the N50,000. As he walked out, he turned to me and said, ‘I don’t think you will make it.’ I replied, ‘I will make it,’” said Tinubu.

The President stated that his uncle later called to confirm receiving the money but admitted that he had only given the messenger N10,000, keeping the rest.

“I was amazed. At that moment, I almost dropped the idea of running for President. But thanks to Aminu Masari and all of you who encouraged me.

“When I came to Abuja, Masari told me, ‘I am the Chairman of the North West Group; don’t look back’,” he said.

President Tinubu noted that he assumed office during a time of economic uncertainty and had to make immediate, difficult decisions, including removing the fuel subsidy.

“On the day of my inauguration, I had to decide on something not originally in my speech, and that was the fuel subsidy removal,” he said.

Noting that Nigeria had reached a point of no return on the issue, the President said: “The hallmark of a great leader is the ability to make the right decision at the right time.

“That was the day I declared that the subsidy was gone. The following day, I was hounded and thoroughly abused in the media. But I stood firm, knowing it was the right thing to do for our nation’s future.”

Vice President Kashim Shettima lauded the President’s sacrifices, stating that history will remember him as the leader who took on the nation’s most complex challenges.

“Thanks to his boldness, future presidents of Nigeria will not have to wrestle with the same ghosts that haunted past administrations, including fraud-ridden fuel subsidies, an unstable forex market, and the suppression of local government autonomy.

“These were the thorny issues that many before him sidestepped. But Asiwaju did not sidestep history; he came to rewrite it.

“And in rewriting it, Asiwaju has taken the bullets that many before him simply lacked the courage to face.

“But that is the thing about true leadership: it is not for those who seek comfort. It is for those who understand that the path to national greatness is lined with difficult choices,” he said.

Sen. Godswill Akpabio, President of the Senate, praised the President’s ability to forgive and his relentless passion for national development.

Akpabio described the President as a leader who thinks outside the box and as the ‘most audacious president’ in the country’s history.

He said under Tinubu’s watch, governors were getting more allocation.

“If I were a governor under your administration, I would have been a ‘supernatural governor’ and not an uncommon governor,” he said.

Mr Benjamin Kalu, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, described President Tinubu as a leader who has broken barriers and uplifted future Nigerian politicians.

He noted that the President had taken a backseat to raising leaders for decades.

“Today, he is at the forefront because Nigeria needs him. In 2019, despite not being from his region, he supported me in my most difficult political moment.

“Nigeria needs leaders who rise above tribal considerations, and he has demonstrated that,” he said.

Gov. Hope Uzodinma of Imo State commended the President’s decisive leadership at a time when Nigeria needed stability.

“Only a leader with deep conviction and love for the country could have taken the bold and yet necessary decisions that averted national collapse and now restoring hope and confidence across the federation,” he said.

Dr. Bosun Tijjani, Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, shared his personal experience of being appointed by President Tinubu despite his past activism.

“Before my appointment, I had never met the President. But after my confirmation, he told me, ‘I have looked at your records and activism, and I am giving you an opportunity to serve,’” he said.

The minister recounted a recent meeting at the World Bank, where a senior official described Tinubu as the best reformist leader in Africa today.

Prof. Shaffideen Amuwo, a childhood friend of the President, reminisced about their early years and how divine providence led Tinubu to the presidency.

“Our relationship did not just start in Chicago; we played soccer together as children.

“While I chose the library, my brother chose politics because he loved to speak. Today, Allah has shown His greatness by guiding him to lead Nigeria.

“The city of Chicago, founded by a Black man, has educated the man who now leads the most populous Black nation on earth.

“I pray that Allah continues to hold his hand and guide him as he works to save our country,” he said.

AfDB president, Adesina reacts to reports on 2027 presidential race

Dr Akinwumi Adesina, the president of African Development Bank (AfDB) has reacted to media reports on his ambition to run for the 2027 presidential race.

During a recent interview on Arise TV, Adesina was questioned about his political future after his tenure at the AfDB.

Adesina said: “I will be available to serve in any capacity, globally, in Africa, anywhere, including in my own country, Nigeria.”

The outgoing AfDB Presidents’ remarks generated widespread interpretations that he was subtly declaring interest in the 2027 presidential race.

However, Adesina while addressing the issue in a Post X on Thursday, said what he said during the interview was misinterpreted by media outlets.

He also encouraged people to go and listen to the interview to confirm what he actually said.

He reacted: “A segment of my recent interview on @ARISEtv has been both misinterpreted and misrepresented in several Nigerian media outlets.

“What I said was, “I will be available to serve in any capacity, globally, in Africa, anywhere, including my own country.”

“A listen to the substantive and robust interview, which is available online (youtu.be/xgyDRnBWWcY?si…), will show this to be the case.

“For clarity and for the record, I did not say that I am running for the office of President of Nigeria,” Adesina said.

  • US Election: Why I stepped down from the presidential race – Joe Biden

US Election: Why I stepped down from the presidential race – Joe Biden

In a rare address from the Oval Office, President Joe Biden spoke somberly and emotionally about his decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race, emphasizing his intention to pass the leadership mantle to the next generation. He described this decision as a step toward unifying the nation he has served for decades.

“I revere this office, but I love my country more,” Biden stated. “It’s been the honor of my life to serve as president, but in the defense of democracy, which is at stake, I think it’s more important than any title.”

This prime-time speech was Biden’s first direct communication with the American public since his unexpected announcement three days earlier that he was stepping down from the campaign and endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris to succeed him.

“I believe my record as president, my leadership in the world, and my vision for America’s future all merited a second term,” Biden said. “But nothing, nothing can come in the way of saving our democracy. That includes personal ambition, so I’ve decided the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation.”

Biden praised Harris as “experienced, tough, and capable” and called her an “incredible partner” during their three-and-a-half years together.

“I’ve made my choice. I’ve made my views known … Now, the choice is up to you, the American people,” he said.

Throughout his address, Biden underscored the election’s stakes, characterizing it as an “inflection point” crucial to preserving the nation’s founding principles.

“I ran for president four years ago because I believed, and still do, that the soul of America was at stake, the very nature of who we are was at stake,” he said. “And that’s still the case.”

Over the weekend, Biden succumbed to mounting pressure from Democrats to reconsider his candidacy after a poor debate performance rekindled concerns about his age and his ability to successfully challenge Donald Trump for another term.

Initially, Biden resisted calls to step aside, insisting he was the best candidate to face Trump. However, on Wednesday, he acknowledged the necessity of a new path.

“There’s a time and a place for long years of experience in public life,” he said. “There’s also a time and a place for new voices, fresh voices, and yes, younger voices. And that time and place is now.”

Biden took the opportunity to highlight his accomplishments, citing the economic recovery post-pandemic, efforts to reduce healthcare costs, the passage of a significant infrastructure law, and his international leadership, including support for Ukraine and strengthening NATO.

Looking ahead, Biden expressed his desire to address issues such as gun violence, climate change, continued economic improvement, and reforming the U.S. Supreme Court during his remaining months in office.

The president did not address Republican criticisms regarding his fitness to serve. The White House stated earlier that Biden’s health had “nothing” to do with his decision and dismissed GOP calls for his immediate resignation as “ridiculous.”

Hundreds of White House staffers gathered to hear Biden’s speech, and cheers were heard from the building following his historic address. Biden’s family, including his children Hunter and Ashley, First Lady Jill Biden, and several grandchildren, were present in the Oval Office.

Toward the end of his remarks, Biden expressed heartfelt gratitude for the opportunity to serve the nation and reach the presidency, a position he had long aspired to.

Biden, now 81, began his career as one of the youngest senators in U.S. history, representing Delaware for 36 years. He served as Vice President under President Barack Obama for eight years before winning the presidency in 2020 after unsuccessful bids in 1988 and 2008.

“My fellow Americans, it has been the privilege of my life to serve this nation for over 50 years,” Biden said. “Nowhere else on Earth could a kid with a stutter from modest beginnings in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and Claymont, Delaware, one day sit behind the Resolute desk in the Oval Office as President of the United States, but here I am.”

“I’ve given my heart and my soul to our nation, like so many others, but I’m blessed a million times in return for the love and support of the American people,” he said. “I hope you have some idea how grateful I am to all of you.”

  • How Tinubu used business partner to deceive Obi into presidential race – Omokri

How Tinubu used business partner to deceive Obi into presidential race – Omokri

Former media aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri said the president-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu used his trusted business partner to deceive Obi into joining the presidential race.

According to him, Tinubu did that to reduce the votes of the Peoples Democratic Party, which came second in the election.

Omokri spoke further that Tinubu displayed mastery in understanding the mentality of the Obidients, who he said lacked the humility to see that they were being played.

In places like Kaduna, Omokri maintained that the APC is using the same strategy, saying the party is funding the Labour Party gubernatorial campaign, knowing that Southern Kaduna people will emotionally vote Labour and divide PDP’s votes.

“Peter Obi had no path to victory. He lacked national spread. Tinubu knew that. But he used his trusted business partner, who likes to dance publicly with him, to deceive Obi into contesting, knowing that that was the only way to reduce PDP’s numbers.

“And more importantly, Tinubu displayed mastery in understanding the mentality of the average Obidient. He knew they lacked the humility to see that they were being played!

“And it is not yet over. In places like Kaduna, the APC is using the same strategy. They cannot win on their own. So, they are funding the Labour gubernatorial campaign, knowing that Southern Kaduna people will emotionally vote Labour and divide PDP’s votes,” Omokri said on his social media handles.

I warned Obi to withdraw from 2023 presidential race – Arthur Eze reveals

Anambra-born billionaire, Prince Arthur Eze, has revealed he warned the Labour Party(LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi to halt his 2023 presidential ambition.

The businessman stated these on Monday, marking the 2022 Ofala Festival of the traditional ruler of Ukpo, in Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Eze made the comments in the presence of the state governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, traditional rulers, women groups, and prominent people of the state.

He said, “I warned Peter Obi to withdraw from this race but he would not listen. I told him plainly that I am not part of his plans. I told him to drop his ambition, and wait for next time.

“When he told me about his ambition, I asked him the states he thinks he can win in the west and in the north – he told me; but I was not convinced. I told him he could not win; so that he would not waste his time and money.”

Pointing at Soludo, Eze, said, “This is the person we are tipping to take over as Nigerian president of Igbo extraction in the time to come. We have a presidential candidate(Atiku) that we are supporting now. After his tenure, he will hand over to Soludo as president.”

  • Atiku should step down from presidential race and endorse me – Tinubu

Atiku should step down from presidential race and endorse me – Tinubu

The All Progressives Congress (APC), presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has asked his main contender and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar to step down and endorse him ahead of the 2023 elections.

Tinubu spoke on Monday when he met with leaders from the northern part of the country under the umbrella of the Arewa Joint Committee for an interactive session.

He, however, noted, “You (apparently referring to Atiku) started from Uyo and now ended up in Kaduna and you are speaking to the North that you are the right candidate for the North; how do we reconcile that? You have lost the election.”

“It’s payback time. Let Atiku endorse me instead of campaigning in Kaduna. I supported him in 2007,” he added.

The former Lagos helmsman told the gathering that comprised the Arewa Consultative Forum, Northern Elders Forum, Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation,  Jamiyyar Matan Arewa, the Center for Historical Development Research (Arewa House) as well as the Arewa Research and Documentation Project, that he was also one of them.

“I am one of you. Yes. I am a city boy from Lagos,” he added.

“As you are aware, security is a function of resources. I am committed to mobilising all assets within our national power to secure Nigeria.

“We did this in Lagos through many initiatives, especially the Security Trust Fund, through which we addressed many needs of our security forces which helped to sanitise Lagos State.

“As you may recall, when I assumed office as governor in 1999, the situation I met was basically a case of banditry where urban gangs ruled the streets.

“I returned law and order, tamed what could have been a huge ethnic war and made Lagos one of the safest states in Nigeria. I will replicate that across the country,” he said.

Ohanenye said, “We have few women in the contest. I am talking to them to come out. Let’s summon the courage. I don’t know whether, are we afraid of you men? Or are we afraid of the world?

“Because so many women are well to do, they work hard. I am telling them to come out. You know before now, we decided to relax thinking that the men will give us the best because we are all brought up to be loyal to our husbands, to be under a man, but as things are going right now, our children are suffering everywhere and I don’t see it as the people that have ruled are not doing their best but a woman’s input is very much needed.

“Nigeria needs domestic interventions to overcome the various challenges we are facing which only women can give. I am giving this contest all that I have got. It is a lie I have stepped down. I am not thinking of that.”

The Minister of Science Technology and Innovations, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, former Governor of Zamfara, Sani Yerima have formally declared to contest for the presidential ticket of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2023 presidency.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) reports Onu’s declaration swells the number of presidential aspirants, including ministers, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, APC National leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and some state governors among others.

While formally declaring on Friday in Abuja, Onu also a former governor of old Abia State said Nigeria can no longer look to foreign countries for its salvation.

According to him, the fact that Nigeria has the key to unlocking its own prosperity, is enough for the citizens and his party to elect him as Nigeria’s next ‘Chief Servant.

He recalled his days as governor of Abia State, when the state provided free treatment in public hospitals and also tackled insecurity and others sectors.

“As a man of great compassion, and also believing that women are great builders of nations, I did not want any pregnant woman or child to die either during pregnancy or childbirth, which are the most challenging periods in any woman’s life, just because the woman cannot afford to pay hospital bills. Hence, all pregnant women received free treatment in public hospitals.

“I want all Nigerians, particularly the youth to know that Nigeria has a bright future. Let there be nothing that can make any Nigerian lose hope about the future of Nigeria. The Almighty God that created us, gave our dear nation, everything that she needs to be a leader in the world. “My fellow Nigerians, we have the key to unlock the prosperity of our dear nation, and this key is a knowledge economy driven by science, technology and innovation,” Onu said.

He also said that this is so, because no nation has ever become truly great, whether in ancient or modern times, without the efficient and effective deployment of STI to nation-building.

He said, “I am convinced that I have the knowledge, the experience, the credibility, the education having been trained in one of the best universities in the world, the vision, the integrity, maturity and a man who can be trusted.

“I most respectfully ask my political party, the APC, to elect me as its presidential candidate, and the people of Nigeria to elect me as the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, for me to be the chief servant of the nation.”
