Pentecostal pastor, Tunde Bakare, has picked the All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential form to contest in the party’s presidential election, describing past leaders as ‘cake eaters’.

TheNewsGuru.com reports this came on the heels of Bakare’s earlier declaration of interest at the “Unveiling Project 16 to Nigerians in the Diaspora’” event tagged “The portrait is a new Nigeria.”

He described the past administrations as “cake eaters” adding that it was time to have the 16th administration of “cake bakers.”

He was President Muhammadu Buhari’s running mate in 2011 when the latter ran unsuccessfully in that year’s presidential poll.

Bakare is the fourth person from Ogun State to declare interest in the 2023 presidency after Vice-president Yemi Osinbajo, former Governor, Ibikunle Amosun and former House of Representatives Speaker, Dimeji Bankole.

  • 2023 Election: Former chairman NIDOA joins presidential race

2023 Election: Former chairman NIDOA joins presidential race

The former Chairman, Board of Directors, Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation Americas (NIDOA) Patience Key, has joined the presidential race by purchasing the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) expression of interest and nomination forms.

Key, who was speaking to newsmen shortly after obtaining her nomination forms at the party national secretariat on Thursday in Abuja, said that she would prioritise tackling insecurity, poverty and injustice.

She was accompanied to the party secretariat by her supporters from different states.

Key said that the three agenda were in line with PRP’s constitution and programmes.

“Number one is peace. Why I say peace is because with the chaotic situation we see ourselves, security is basic. To be able to gain peace, we need to look at the root causes of this problem.

“We need to put together structures to be able to tackle and erase poverty in our country through education, healthcare and building structures.”

Key, who was the first to obtain the party’s presidential nomination form, also pledged to address inequality in the country, especially gender bias facing women and marginalisation causing some parties in the country to be demanding for secession.

“The third one is wealth creation. A nation that does not produce anything cannot grow.

“Yes, we are the giant of Africa in terms of our population; the population alone is not going to make us what we need to be if we don’t produce; if we are not industrialised, if we don’t build capacity.

“I believe that the number one thing is wealth creation, building the potential because Nigerian has talents.

“We have great population and with our population, we do not need other country to survive. We just need to do the right thing and so on.”

Key said that she decided to contest on the platform of PRP because the party had ideology and structures in the 36 states, the FCT and 777 local governments needed to win elections.

“Also the way Nigerians are looking at the next election, it is no more just about party. They are looking at individuals. They are looking at what this person or group has for us.

“And for the 18 political parties that we have, you see that PRP has the oldest ideology and the best identity. We have stayed on course, since inception, we have not shifted.

She said that these and many other characteristics were presently attracting many great Nigerians to the party.

Key commended Nigerians both within the country and those in the Diaspora for contributing toward the purchase of her nomination forms, said such gesture had energised her to join the race, adding “nothing can stop me’’.

The Party National Secretary, Babatunde Ali assured all the aspirants of free, fair and credible primaries from where the party’s presidential candidate would emerge.

“Our circular is already out. Our guideline is already out and it is going to be by indirect voting. Delegates are going to vote and whoever wins, I can guarantee you, PRP will give it to that person.

“In our party, the first principle is value and quality of human beings. It does not matter if she is a woman. If she wins she will have it.”

Ali advised aspirants running on the platform of the party not to run manifestoes that were not in line with the party’s documents.

The documents, according to him include its constitution, programmes and principles, “which are always together’’.

He also advised the aspirants that the party supremacy must also be honoured at all times.

“In the Constitution of PRP, the president, the governors, elected officials and others are members of the National Working Committee and the chairman of the party is the leader,” he said.

  • I’m not intimidated by big names in presidential race – Yahaya Bello

I’m not intimidated by big names in presidential race – Yahaya Bello

Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi on Wednesday, picked the All Progressives Congress (APC) Expression of Interest and Nomination forms for presidential race, saying he is not intimidated by anyone.

Bello who was the first aspirant to pay the N100 million fee for the forms, told newsmen shortly after picking up the forms at the APC national secretariat in Abuja that if elected president in 2023, he would restore the hope of Nigerians.

He, however, re-emphasised that he was not intimidated by the big names in the presidential race.

On the recent calls by some groups and even governors on former President Goodluck Jonathan to be adopted as APC consensus candidate, Bello said that was the beauty of democracy.

The Kogi governor said he was not threatened by the calls, because in democracy, people were allowed to support their preferred candidates.

“That is the beauty of democracy, anybody can support anyone, but I am assuring you that our great party, the APC is a party that has its own ethics, rules and regulations.

“I know surely that all of these are in my favour and I am not in any way scared of the pedigree of anyone, whosoever.

“I am confident that I am in the majority, I have the women, I have the youths, I have the people living with disabilities and they are all behind me. I have leaders, I have followers and above all, I have God almighty,” Bello said.

He stressed that he was coming to restore the hope of Nigeria, Africa, and the entire black race.

“That is the hope we are bringing on board; to unite, to secure, and to put our country and her people on the path of progress and prosperity.

“We give glory to God Almighty, the creator of the universe who has created today and made today a reality.

“Today I have with me my expression of interest and nomination forms to contest as the presidential flag bearer of this great party, the APC.

“Right now, what we have ahead of us is the task of canvassing for support and consulting all party faithful, leaders, stalwarts, members and all Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora.

“Give us your support to emerge as the flag-bearer of this great party come May 30 and 31, and by the grace of God, I shall become victorious and the party shall become victorious,” he said.

Hafsat Abiola-Costello, Director-General, `Hope ‘23 Yahaya Bello Campaign Organisation’’ said Bello demonstrated sincerity of purpose by being the first aspirant to pay for the forms.

Abiola-Costello said Bello’s action was a demonstration that the young people were ready to take over the country’s leadership.

“This is a historic moment, a great milestone in the history of our country.

“Finally, the young people of Nigeria are taking responsibility, demonstrating that we can lead this country to a brighter future.

“Because we want to demonstrate our sincerity of purpose, our belief is that this is the destiny that God wants for Nigeria and we will do everything in our power to bring it to pass.

“So we are looking forward to the support of delegates of the APC; we are also looking forward to the support of Nigerians when we get to the presidential campaign.

“God willing, 2023, we will be welcoming President Yahaya Bello to Aso Rock. Congratulations to all Nigerians,” Abiola-Costello said.

Some of those in the 2023 presidential race in the APC include; Sen. Bola Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, Minister of Transportation, and Mr Rochas Okorocha, the immediate past governor of Imo.

Also in the race are; Dr Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour and Productivty, Mr Chukwuemeka Nwajuba, Minister of State for Education and Gov. David Umuahi of Ebonyi among others.

Cross River gov, Ben Ayade joins 2023 presidential race

Cross River State governor, Professor Ben Ayade has joined other Southern aspirants to declare his presidential ambition.

Ayade declared his intentions to run for presidency of the country in 2023 general elections after due consultation with President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday.

Ayade who met with President Buhari behind closed doors said he got a commitment from the president to go ahead and run if he has the qualities, but he must consult widely with leaders of the party from the south-south region.

Ayade noted that his prime responsibility would be to tackle power, security and economic challenges facing the country if he finally gets the nod.

The Cross River governor however, noted that he wouldn’t hesitate to support any candidate of Buhari’s choice in order to consolidate on the modest achievements of the ruling APC.

When asked if he would support the ambition of ex-president Goodluck Jonathan if he later declares his intention for 2023 presidency, Ayade said he would definitely support him if he is the party’s choice.

  • Ngige joins presidential race, says I’m well equipped for the job

Ngige joins presidential race, says I’m well equipped for the job

Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, has declared his intentions to vie for the country’s presidency.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Ngige’s media office last night said the minister has been consulting stakeholders in his All Progressives Congress party as well as stalwarts of opposition political parties and has made up his mind to contest for the position .

The former Anambra state governor will officially make his intentions known to the public on Tuesday, April 19th TheNewsGuru.com can confirm.

Ngige who is also a former Senator is entering the race, his media team informed, because of his belief that his aspiration had a cross-party appeal.

Ngige who has also been consulting opposition political parties members told his supporters at Amansea, a border town with Enugu State after visiting Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi that:

“I visited Enugu State governor as part of my nation-wide consultation. Even though he is in PDP, he is an Igbo man.

“He is a very realistic, discerning person. Don’t forget also that Enugu is the capital of the former Eastern Region. And you know that respect is reciprocal.

“Over the week, I also consulted some other Nigerians not allied to any political party. Therefore, I had to consult the Enugu State governor over my intention to contest and to seek his views too.

“He told me to kick the ball into the net.

“So this journey is not for APC members alone. Our brothers in PDP are easily agreed that I tower above some of the persons aspiring to the position in their party.

“I have no fear whatsoever. I am equal to the task. Even our brothers in the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) will join us in the task ahead,’’ Ngige was quoted as saying.

The minister noted that his antecedents, stewardship as a civil servant, governor, senator and minister stood him apart.

“What we did in Anambra in 34 months, those who did eight years have not done them.

“I did 34 months during which I laid the foundation for the new Anambra. I didn’t just lay the foundation; I also took the house beyond the lintel level.

“I built schools, returned schools to the missions, rescued Odumegwu Ojukwu University from the status of a glorified secondary school – built structures there and secured accreditation for 15 courses including Law and Medicine.

“I rehabilitated and upgraded our general hospitals, including Enugwu-Ukwu, Onitsha and Amaku in Awka and restructured the state’s civil service and also introduced examination as basis for promotion.

“I built more than 500km of roads across all senatorial zones that are still standing today.

“I also inherited N42 billion debts when I assumed office. I didn’t talk about it. I put my hands on the plough and started working and cleared arrears of pensions and salaries, among others,’’ Ngige was also quoted as saying.

Ngige added that he had an advantage of being part of this government and part of the 7th Senate.

“I’m well equipped for the job,’’ he stressed.

“I plan to re-engineer Nigeria the way I re-engineered Anambra. April 19 is the date. Let all roads lead to Alor where the matter will be laid to rest,’’ Ngige quipped.

  • Amaechi joins presidential race, insists he is an Igbo man

Amaechi joins presidential race, insists he is an Igbo man

The Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has finally joined the league of those gunning for President Muhammadu Buhari’s job in 2023.

Amaechi, two-term governor of Rivers State and Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly for eight years, said he is in the race because he is “qualified to serve.”

Though Amaechi is yet to formally declare his aspiration, his manifesto, which will be made public soon.

“What is required is for us to continue to work towards a nation in which the doors of opportunity are open to all our citizens irrespective of ethnicity, creed, class or circumstance.”

Speculations have been rife that the minister, one of the closest political allies of President Muhammadu Buhari, may run for the presidency in 2023.

But he has never denied nor acknowledged that he was interested in the race.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Amaechi has been consulting behind the scene and building bridges of understanding. Observers are of the view that given the huge support base he has managed to put together he has become one od the top contenders for the APC presidential flag.

APC has zoned the presidential slot to the South for the 2023 presidential elections.

So far, only former Lagos State governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has formally declared his interest in the race.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo is also believed to be interest in vying for the party’s presidential ticket but he is still keeping his aspiration close to his chest.

Observers are of the view that entrance of Amaechi into the race will definitely change the fundamentals of the race.

This is more so as some of the new National Executives members who came on board at the recently concluded Convention of the party were actually his sympathizers.

A chieftain of the APC, Amaechi was elected governor twice on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) but left for the then opposition party shortly before the 2015 general elections.

Titled, “Qualified to Serve,” the 86-page brochure, which is his pitch for the APC ticket, highlighted why he decided to contest – his competitive advantages, broad and deep experiences in governance, nationalist outlook, geopolitical considerations, political prowess, personality and leadership, track record of performance, highlights of achievements as Rivers State Governor and Minister of Transportation and what he called “hallmarks of Amaechi’s leadership.”

In what seems like an attempt to address the issue of inclusion, Amaechi said: “We must give meaning to democracy so that every Nigerian can find a place and a voice in a land of free men and women. We must deploy our diversity to increase our strength. We must make our streets and highways, and now forests and farmlands, safe again for all Nigerians to fulfill their individual dreams of a good life so that, together, we can actualize the manifest destiny of this blessed land.”

Itemising the focus of his campaign, Amaechi said, “We need to quickly replace the politics of impressions and personalities with the politics of issues and ideas. We must seek common ground on broad national issues on a bipartisan basis, not on the basis of personalities or geopolitical zones, tribes or factions.

“The common ground must be based on a dispassionate grasp of national problems: how do we educate our children, heal the sick, give hope to those in despair, provide succour to the needy and find work for the unemployed? How do we build infrastructure that will quickly transform and modernize our economy for the good of all Nigerians?

Amaechi said courage, stamina, and resilience are some of the virtues that make him tower above others.

Addressing the question of his Igbo identity he said, “My birth names are Igbo names Chibuike Amaechi. I am an Igbo man. Let no one deny me my Igbo heritage, birthright, ancestry, please!

“Unless you want to be sectional and deny the Igbo people. I have made myself clear repeatedly, that I, Chibuike Amaechi from Ikwerre, am an Igbo man. Our people are Igbo people.”

The minister urged his party, the APC, to look towards Ndigbo for the 2023 presidential ticket.

“As APC prepares to conduct the primaries to choose the party’s flagbearer, they must pay attention to all the geopolitical factors at play.

“Understandably, there is a strong push for power to shift to the South in 2023 and specifically to the Igbos. Igbos have not been at the centre since the Second Republic more than 40 years ago, when late Alex Ekwueme was Vice President in the Shehu Shagari Administration. Not surprisingly there is loud agitation from the Igbos that they should have their turn to lead the government.

“Other groups are also pleading the case of the Igbos in the name of equity and the stability of the country. Leader of Pan Yoruba sociopolitical group, Afenifere, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, has warned that Igbos should produce the president in 2023 election, if Nigeria hopes to enjoy peace. The Association of Arewa Community in Igboland has also urged Nigerians to consent to an Igbo becoming the President of the country in 2023.

“Chibuike Amaechi is an Igbo man of Ikwerre stock. His hometown Ubima is on the border of Imo State and the fact that Nigeria’s modern geopolitical map places it in the South-South region does not change the fact that Ikwerre are a dialectical group of the Igbo nation. By ethnicity, language and heritage, Amaechi is no less Igbo than a man from Abriba, Owerri, Ebonyi, Awka or Enugu-Ukwu.”

Addressing those who insist that only Igbo from the Southeast are qualified since zoning is done on regional basis, the brochure said Amaechi coming from South-South gives him a unique advantage.

“In addition, he also has the unique advantage of being not only Igbo but a Niger Deltan. This means that Amaechi could also find favour with those currently insisting that the next President should come from the South-South on the basis that their region only completed one elected term under President Goodluck Jonathan.

“There are some in other parts of the country who may find it more politically expedient to throw their lot behind a South-South candidate than behind a “traditional” Igbo man.

“As much as Amaechi’s tribe and geo-political zone give him an advantage, he also has the advantage of being a candidate who is a true national figure – recognized all over Nigeria, with friends and allies across the length and breadth of the country.

“Some people vying for office also have recognizable names but are identified so resolutely with their tribe or zone that they cannot be effective national consensus candidates.

“Few of Amaechi’s contenders have had the same opportunity or share the same disposition that allows him to travel to every state of the Federation, forge alliances and build relationships.

“Beloved by his people in the Niger Delta, he is also embraced by the South East as a true Igbo son and lauded in the South West for providing the Lagos – Ibadan railway system which has been a source of pride and renewed economic activity in the region. The North see him as a friend, a truly detribalized Nigerian who does not discriminate against tribe or religion and who has worked tirelessly to support President Muhammadu Buhari.”

Amaechi said the cap fits him because he has a “thorough understanding of the complexities of the nation – the challenges of balancing the interests and influences in a country of different persuasions, traditions, cultures, religions.”

“While others fan the flames of ethnic tension for their own selfish political advantage, Amaechi has consistently championed national unity, identifying ethnic divisiveness as an obstacle to progress.”
