The only way Peter Obi can get presidential ticket – Abba Moro

Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro has said the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi can secure the presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, only if he returns to the party.

Moro, who is the lawmaker representing Benue South senatorial district, disclosed this on Tuesday while responding to questions in an interview on Politics Today.

When asked about the possibility of Peter Obi returning to the PDP, the lawmaker said, “But you know, in politics, nothing is certain. I’ve always said that in politics, two plus two is not four, and so, these are matters of interest. And when it comes to existential interest from a community of persons within a geopolitical zone, it is possible.

“As a party we are yet to speak to Peter Obi; some people are already talking to him, and he stands a chance of getting the party’s ticket if he returns.

“The conversation is predicated on the belief by such individuals that if Peter Obi comes back and is the most favoured candidate, the most supported candidate, and becomes a candidate, the PDP will make an impact in the 2027 general elections.”

  • PDP presidential ticket: Okowa didn’t betray anyone – Aide

PDP presidential ticket: Okowa didn’t betray anyone – Aide

Mr. Olisa Ifeajika, Chief Press Secretary to Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta, on Monday said that Okowa, Vice-Presidential Candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), did not betray anyone in the party’s presidential primary.

Olisa stated this at a news conference in Asaba.

He said that as a loyal partyman, Gov. Okowa heeded PDP’s directives and decisions in all matters concerning the presidential convention.

He recalled that the Southern Governors’ Forum at a meeting in Asaba, resolved and later reiterated in subsequent meetings in Lagos and Enugu, to work towards the realisation of Southern Presidency.

According to him, when members of the forum returned to their various parties, decisions varied as each political party had different plans to approach the process of electing a presidential candidate.

“For us in PDP,  the party told the governors that it may not go with their position because we are in opposition and in order to get it right, the party set up a committee headed by Benue Governor, Samuel Ortom, to advise it appropriately on zoning of the ticket.

“The Ortom committee, in its wisdom, recommended that zoning be jettisoned to allow all aspirants to participate in the primary to enable the best to emerge.

“The committee presented its report to the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) where it was agreed to open the presidential ticket to enable for the best hands to emerge as recommended.

“As far as we are aware, no member, including the governors or group, protested the party’s decision. They all acquiesced and accepted the party’s decision on zoning.

“There was no treachery anywhere because no agreement was reached. The party’s position prevailed and delegates at the Presidential Primary voted as they wished,” he said.

Ifeajika said that long after the primaries, some persons were still talking about betrayal, and wondered where the G-5 governors were when the Ortom Committee presented its report.

“Why didn’t they raise their voices against the party’s decision not to zone the ticket to any part and rise against it?

“They agreed to it, participated, only to start an agitation without foundation after a candidate had emerged.

“I see the G-5 Governors agitation as a distraction and I appeal to them to sheath their sword and beat a retreat as quickly as possible to join the party’s rescue mission.

“They remain very senior members of PDP and they remain an important factor because the next election is a low hanging fruit for the PDP to pick if we close ranks. We believe that Nigerians would vote for the party,” he added.

On the G-5 governors agitation for the sack of Ayu, Okowa’s spokesman said it was a constitutional matter which ought to be addressed at the appropriate time.

“In Rivers state where Wike holds sway as Governor, the Governorship candidate is from Rivers South and the Chairman of the party in the state is also from Rivers South.

“We didn’t see Wike tell the party Chairman to step aside because a governorship candidate emerged from same senatorial district with him.

“It becomes germane if Atiku emerges President and the party Chairman remains in office. There is no law that compels Ayu to resign because the North has produced the Presidential candidate, unless he decides to step aside on his own volition.

“One would have thought that having pursued the agitation without yielding results, that they will beat a retreat but if they go ahead to endorse another candidate aside the PDP Presidential candidate, appropriate steps will be taken,” he stressed.

On Obasanjo’s endorsement of Peter Obi, he said Obasanjo merely exercised his constitutional right, adding that Nigerians might not listen to him.

“You will recall that sometime ago he tore his party card and said he wants to remain a statesman. What he has done is the exercise of his constitutional rights.

“He was against Buhari in 2019 but he later won and that means that many Nigerians didn’t listen to him and that may also play out this time around,” he said.

  • Shettima is a detribalised Nigerian, major boost to APC Presidential Ticket, says Omo-Agege

Shettima is a detribalised Nigerian, major boost to APC Presidential Ticket, says Omo-Agege

The Deputy Senate President and Delta APC Governorship candidate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege has felicitated with Senator Kashim Shettima on his emergence as Vice Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 General Elections.

In a congratulatory message personally signed by him, Senator Omo-Agege described the APC Vice Presidential candidate as detribalized and visionary, and a major plus for the APC Presidential ticket.

He recalled how the former Borno State Governor and lawmaker representing Borno Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, played a key role in his own emergence as Deputy Senate President in 2019.

“He was and continues to be a major player, not only in the National Assembly but in our nation at large. He is a large hearted and forward looking leader, inclusive in perspective and shorn of all bigotry. Our presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, couldn’t have made a better choice.

It is no surprise, Omo-Agege added, “that the Borno State Chapter of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), has immediately risen to support Shettima’s selection as Tinubu’s running mate.”

He noted that the APC Vice Presidential candidate is hospitable to other faiths and ethnic groups, and that this was evident during his tenure as Governor of Borno State from 2011 to 2019.

“As governor of a dominantly Kanuri state, he had amongst his closest aides, an Ibo Christian from Anambra State, an Urhobo Christian from Delta Central Senatorial District, a Christian from Edo State, a Yoruba Christian from the Southwest, a Fulani man from Gombe and a Hausa man from Zamfara,” he said.

He said that the Vice Presidential candidate is a forthright, vocal and outspoken politician who speaks truth to power.

“Senator Shettima is a dogged professional, a rare breed banker, an agricultural economist and politician who is an inspiration to a new generation of leaders.

“His rich profile in Executive and Legislative business, public and corporate governance will always be useful in steering the ship of state. I call on Nigerians to rally round the Tinubu/Shettima ticket and vote massively for APC in all positions at the 2023 General Elections. “

  • Omo-Agege eulogizes Tinubu for winning APC’s presidential ticket

Deputy Senate President, Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege has congratulated Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the newly-elected presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Omo-Agege’s congratulatory message is contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday by Mr Ima Niboro, Director, Communications and Media Strategy, Delta APC Gubernatorial Campaign Organisation.

Omo-Agege, the standard-bearer of APC in the 2023 governorship election in Delta, expressed optimism that Tinubu would emerge victorious in the 2023 presidential election.

He lauded President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Working Committee of the APC for giving all aspirants a level playing field.

He commended the 2022 APC Special Convention Committee for successfully conducting the primary election.

Omo-Agege also showered glowing tributes on APC governors in the north of Nigeria for setting the pace by zoning the presidency to the South.

He called on Tinubu to be magnanimous in victory and stressed the need for all presidential aspirants to join hands with the APC’s presidential candidate and the party in ensuring victory.

“Not everyone gave APC a chance to conduct a free, fair and credible presidential primary election. With the undercurrents in the build-up, some had predicted that our great party would go into extinction after this convention.

“With the transparent process that saw the emergence of Asiwaju Tinubu as our party’s standard-bearer, I am confident more than ever before that this is the beginning of even greater tidings for our party.

“We proved our critics wrong. We have shown that with unity of purpose, the sky is our starting point,’’ he said.

Omo-Agege also called on Nigerians to support Tinubu and other APC candidates at all levels at the 2023 general elections.

  • APC CONVENTION: Adamu set up 18 subcommittees

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Abdullahi Adamu, has inaugurated 18 sub-committees, which kicked off the three-day special convention/presidential primary of the party.

The committees were inaugurated on Sunday at the party’s Abuja national secretariat in Abuja.

Twenty-three aspirants are in the race for the presidential ticket to fly the party’s flag next year.

The primary slated for Eagle Square in Abuja will be attended by the 2,340 elected delegates from 774 local government areas. The delegates will elect the standard-bearer.

Adamu urged members of the committees to put in their best to have a rancour-free convention.

Stressing the uniqueness of the convention to the committee chairmen and their secretaries, the national chairman said: “The convention this year is a bit different from the other conventions. It is different because it is the first transition convention of our great party.

“The forthcoming convention will be expected within our constitution to produce the flag bearer of our great party to contest the presidential slot.

“We are very careful that we chose different persons to be part of the committees that have been enumerated by the national secretary.

“We assigned the committees at the thoughts and discretion of the party. So, it is our prayers and hopes that every person who is allotted a committee will be satisfied to give his or her best to serve in the slot that is given to him or her.”

Kebbi State Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, who chairs the Election Management Committee, assured the APC leadership of the committees’ readiness to ensure a widely acceptable flag bearer.

Speaking for others, Bagidu said members of the various committees will bring their experiences to bear.

Calling for cooperation among all the committees: “At a time like this is for all of us to cooperate given what the chairman says clearly and what is known to us. As he said, it is a convention like no other which is intended by God’s grace to produce a presidential flag bearer.”

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) gathered that there was mild drama when Borno State Governor Prof. Babagana Zulum kicked against the nomination of Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma as the sole member of the Central Storing Committee for the convention by the National Secretary, Otunba Iyiola Omisore.

The development forced the National Chairman and Secretary to name Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Mohammed Bello as co-chair.

The Eagle Square looked set for today’s convention. The pavilion had been decorated and labelled for delegates according to their states. Armed policemen were seen yesterday night at strategic positions in the arena.

Billboards, banners and posters of all the presidential aspirants adorn the arena.

  • 2023: It’s presidential ticket or nothing for Peter Obi, Support group insists

2023: It’s presidential ticket or nothing for Peter Obi, Support group insists

A group under the aegis of Peter Obi Support Network (POSN) has said their group won’t accept anything short of Presidential ticket for their candidate, Peter Obi.

TheNewsGuru.com reports the group described media reports making the rounds that Mr Peter Obi was being considered for Vice presidential slot to another aspirant as “arrant nonsense”.

Obi’s ambition, the group noted, remains not negotiable, hence warned the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), against playing games with the unity of Nigeria by contemplating to impose and manipulate a northerner on the members.

According to a statement from Obi’s support group signed by its spokesman Sani Saeed Altukry, such move will adversely affect the survival, future and electoral fortunes of the party, especially at the 2023 presidential elections in particular and the entire general election.

It will also rock the already shaky foundations of the country beyond the election cycle

The group therefore asked Mr Obi, who has mass appeal and loved by Nigerians to consider Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, the former Senate President, Bukola Saraki and the Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed as potential running mates when the time comes.

They noted that, “our attention has been drawn to a media report that Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, one of the presidential aspirants on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has opted for the former governor of Anambra state, Peter Obi as running mate again, ahead of the 2023 Presidential race.

“We consider the report – which we understand is planted in a national newspaper as ‘arrant nonsense!””

“Peter Obi’s presidential ambition is not negotiable because he has repeatedly assured us and other Nigerians that have consulted with him on the matter that he is in the presidential race to win.

“The report that Atiku is considering Obi as a running mate is ‘fake news’ obviously planted to test waters and deceive millions of Nigerians that see Peter Obi’s presidency as the last hope to rescue Nigeria.

“However, we are not surprised because Nigerians are aware that Atiku appreciates Obi’s sterling presidential qualities which was why he chose Obi as running mate in 2019.

“Finally, we hereby demand that the PDP party leadership must speak out immediately on the issue of zoning rather than playing hide-and-seek with the matter. The party leadership will be hearing from us on this important issue very soon because any attempt to foist a northern candidate on the party will have adverse effects on the future of the party and on the already shaky unity of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed has said that if Bola Ahmed Tinubu was a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) he would have been given the party presidential ticket.

The Governor, who is also a PDP presidential aspirant revealed on AriseTV, that he highly respects the All Progressives Congress (APC) national leader.

“I was lucky I met Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, (vice president) Osinbajo we discussed, he (Tinubu) called me consensus.

“I told him (Tinubu), if you were in PDP, we would have given you the (presidential) ticket because we know that without you, (Muhammadu) Buhari wouldn’t have been the president.

“In PDP, we recognise contribution. We have people in Nigeria that we must recognise and it was definitely a good outing for me.”
