2023 PRESIDENTIAL TICKET: PDP to dump zoning

There were signs that the Peoples Democratic Party’s 37-man panel on zoning has opted to throw the presidential ticket for the 2023 race open.

If the recommendation is approved by the National Executive Committee (NEC), all zones will be free to bid for the ticket, making it the first time since 1999 that the PDP will not zone its presidential ticket to either the South or the North.

According to a top source, the zoning of the presidential ticket was difficult for Ortom’s panel to decide because the party commenced the sale of nomination forms before setting up a zoning committee.

This made it tricky for the committee to be decisive on which zone will produce the presidential candidate.

A top source said: “Ortom’s committee has recommended that the presidential ticket should be thrown open because its hands were tied and it could not abort an exercise which was already midway.

“We knew this will be the outcome. The committee was dead on arrival because the party was already selling nomination forms before setting up the committee. Presidential aspirants from the North and South had already obtained forms.

“It has legal implications if you ask aspirants who have bought forms to step down or forego their rights to contest.

“The panel has shifted the final decision on its report to the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party which may meet before the Easter break. As you know, NEC itself is divided.”

The camps of ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Senate President Bukola Saraki, Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal and Governor Bala Mohammed were upbeat.

“Following the development from Ortom’s committee, Northern presidential aspirants were in a frenzy because it has brightened their chances of contesting the presidential primaries.

“If the Northern aspirants can agree on a consensus candidate among themselves, the nominee will now slug it out with the presidential aspirants from the South.

“Otherwise, all the presidential aspirants will go to the National Convention to struggle for PDP Presidential ticket.”

Meanwhile, it was gathered that the shuttle to Minna by Governor Nyesom Wike and three others did not achieve much because ex-President Ibrahim Babangida and a former Head of State, Gen. Abubakar Abulsalami were non-committal on the demand of the governors to support power shift to the South.

Another top source added: “The two former leaders avoided making a commitment to the governors. All they preached was about the need for peace, one Nigeria and the best for this country.

“The governors were a bit withdrawn that there was no categorical statement on whether power should remain in the North or shift to the South.

“They had gone to Minna with high expectations but the shuttle actually backfired.”

Other governors in the delegation were Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu).

Saraki’s pro-consensus group visits Makinde, Udom

The pro-consensus aspirants yesterday received the endorsement of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.

Makinde expressed his readiness to work hand-in-hand with the advocates of consensus in a bid to put in place internally mechanisms that would clear doubts and confusion about the option.

The endorsement came during a private meeting of the team, led by Ex-Senate President and former Governor of Kwara State, Bukola Saraki to Makinde at the Oyo State Government House, Agodi, Ibadan.

In the team were Governor Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto), Bala Muhammed (Bauchi) and Muhammed Ayatudeen.

The aspirants said they were on the visit to canvass the support of Makinde whom they described as a key stakeholder in the party, adding that they were ready to forgo their individual ambitions and support a consensus candidate in the interest of Nigeria.

Saraki, who said consensus was used to elect the party leaders at its last convention, explained that the option is not for any particular region, North or South, but for the PDP. He said anyone who wins the party ticket cannot address, fix and rebuild the country by himself but would need the support of everybody.

Saraki said: “We are here, the Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Mohammed; Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal; Alhaji Muhammad Hayatudeen and my humble self, this afternoon to meet the governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, a key stakeholder of our party.

“We have been going around, we who have indicated our interest to run for the positions of the President of this country under our great party. As a key stakeholder of our party, we need to come and brief him (Makinde) on what we meant by this idea of consensus arrangement that we are trying to put together.

“We have looked at the country today, the hardship our people are going through, with the issue of insecurity and it is clear that it is only our party, the PDP, that can provide that brighter future for this country.

“But, in doing that, we ourselves as a party must be ready for government in 2023 and that fact includes uniting ourselves and being focused. Is not about our individual difference, it is the interest of Nigerians that matters.

“We all of course have shown individual interest to be the President but we have decided in our meetings that we are ready to subject ourselves to a consensus arrangement.

“That consensus arrangement is not just one for a part of the country either North or South, no, it is a consensus arrangement for the PDP because even whoever wins this ticket cannot address, fix and rebuild this country by himself.

“He needs the support of everybody and we want that foundation to start from that process and that is why we are all here.”

Makinde, who thanked the visitors, noted that the consensus being canvassed was successfully adopted at the last convention and could also be used to choose the presidential flag bearer for the 2023 election.

Makinde said: “I want to thank my senior colleagues for this visit and meeting. We have discussed behind closed doors and yes, the consensus arrangement we are trying to put together, we have done it at the last convention of our party, it was the first time that PDP was able to achieve bringing in a national chairman for the party through a consensus arrangement.

“So, we believe we can do it and we also believe that Nigerians will take this party seriously when they know that we are all working together to give to them a President through a process that has everybody’s buy-in, the stakeholders with no rancour.

“So, I promised my elder brothers that we will work hand-in-hand, work together to ensure that this consensus is successful.

“I have also said that internally, we will ensure that people understand what we are trying to do and where there is any iota of doubt or confusion, we will put a mechanism in place that will get addressed almost immediately.”

The pro-consensus team also visited Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel at the Government House in Uyo.

Saraki lauded his patriotism and commitment to unity in the party and for championing the agenda of ‘One Nigeria’.

He said: “We’ve been going around the country and we are here to meet with Governor Udom Emmanuel as a key stakeholder, to brief him of our intention to find a way of uniting us and to put the country and the party first and to inform him of our intention to have a consensus arrangement, because that is what we believe will make the party stronger.”

It was gathered that the delegation would proceed to meet with Wike.

Emmanuel affirmed his support for the cause of “One Nigeria” and stressed the need to build a team of patriots to tackle the nation’s challenges on time.

According to him, the task of rescuing Nigeria was way beyond individualism and partisanship, adding that it required a team that can rescue and restore the country.

Emmanuel said: “This is the time we have to look inwards and reappraise, then look at certain things we must do and do it right, and timely.

“That’s why you see this calibre of people coming together trying to find a consensus and to find a common ground to say that we are all but one.

“We don’t have any other country to go to. That’s the whole essence of all the meetings.”

However, Wike, who is on a mobilisation tour to some parts of the country, urged delegates and stakeholders not to waste their votes on aspirants that lack the capacity to win the presidential election.

Wike said he has the capacity and energy required to win, serve and salvage Nigeria as president in 2023.

The governor, according to a statement by his Special Media Assistant, Kelvin Ebiri, made the declaration yesterday in Gombe State during a meeting with stakeholders.

Wike was accompanied by Senator Mohammed Imam, Senator Olaka Nwogu and Senator Suleiman Nazif.

He said: “If you want PDP to win the election in 2023, I have made myself available. Give me the ticket, let me go and take the power for you. We are talking about who can take this power from APC. That person is me.”

Wike said people were free to visit Rivers to see what his administration had done out of love and passion for the upliftment of the socioeconomic status of the people.

He said: “We need to salvage this country. Let us not pretend about it. Insecurity does not know religion. Insecurity does not know ethnicity. Poverty does not know ethnicity. Poverty does not know religion.

“The people who come to kill us, do they look at who is a Christian? Do they look at who is a Moslem? Do they know who is Hausa-Fulani? Do they know who is Igbo? We are dying.

“So, it is not for sentiment. It is not for people to come and tell you, look, it must come from here, no, no. It is for those who have the capacity. If given the opportunity, I will replicate what I’ve done in Rivers State as President of Nigeria.”

The governor said the insistence of some public office holders to hire mercenaries to fight bandits and terrorists overrunning the country was worrisome.

Former Gombe State Governor, Dr. Ibrahim Dankwambo, commended Wike for visiting the state to formally acquaint stakeholders with his presidential ambition.

Dankwambo, who acknowledged Wike’s excellent performance in office, assured him of support if he gets the presidential ticket.

Gombe PDP Chairman General Abnor Kwaskwabe (rtd) described Wike as a man of integrity, an impeccable leader, a bridge-builder, a unifier of men, and whose interest in politics is for the public good.

Sen. Anyim Pius Anyim, a presidential aspirant, has pledged to devout his time and energy to make the country great.

Anyim, also a former President of the Senate, said this when he received a youth group, led by Mr Anthony Chukwuemeka, in Abuja.

He said that he has received tremendous support from Nigerians since he joined the presidential race a few months ago.

“I pledge that when by the grace of God and the will of all Nigerians I am elected President, I will apply my whole time and energy to make Nigeria work for the good of all.”

Chukwuemeka said the gesture was in recognition of Anyim’s quest to make Nigeria greater.

He said the group believed that Anyim when elected President would transform Nigeria into a great country and make life better for the people, especially the youths.

Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has withdrawn his membership in the PDP Zoning Committee.

Fayose stated this in a letter dated April 5 and addressed to Ortom.

Fayose cited his ambition to run for president in 2023 as the reason for his withdrawal.

“I write to formally appreciate the party and all members of this committee.

“I thank you all for your statesmanship, selflessness and sense of patriotism to our party and by extension our nation in the way you have all handled and comported yourselves so far in deliberations regarding this delicate and sensitive issue/assignment, the zoning of public offices, particularly that of the President.

“I pray the outcome will bring understanding, peace and stability to our party and our country at large.

“Having hinted during our last meeting of my intention to run for the office of the President in the coming primary election and by God’s grace; the general election, it will not be morally right to continue to participate in the zoning debate being an aspirant myself,” he said.

He added that his state had nominated Dr Gbenga Faseluka to replace him.

‘Tinubu and I are most likely to be’ – Okorocha speaks on APC presidential ticket

Senator Rochas Okorocha ( APC – Imo) on Sunday said that if the possibility of a Tinubu and Rochas ticket emerged ahead of the 2023 presidential elections, he would clinch it.

Okorocha, a former governor of Imo, said this while fielding questions from newsmen at the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Convention in Abuja.

“Uncle Tinubu and I are most likely to be.

“I know that at the appropriate time it may be because he is the one pushing up in the south west and I am in in the south east.

“So let us see what happens between us, and if that is it ,I will ask him to relax a bit so that we can move this section forward.

“The people naturally love me and I think it is because they believe I care, they believe I love and have sympathy for humanity ,they believe I am detribalised .

“They believe I do not know religion or tribe, Muslim Christian, Igbo or Hausa, Yoruba, all I see is a human being and that is what makes the difference on my side.’’

Okorocha urged Nigerians to use their voter cards well because it was worth much more than they thought.

He said that 2023 would present an opportunity for them to make the right choices.

“Whether it is for internal democracy or for general elections, you must ensure that you cast your vote right because the voter’s card contains everything .

“It is the education of your children ,it is your health , food on the table and security, so I always advise people that the worth of that card in your hand is more than N100 million so do not sell it for N10,000,’’ he said

Okorocha said the convention was beautiful and looked peaceful and everyone seemed to be excited because they were all trying to see that the much talked about convention came to pass.

Talking about the party and its challenges, he said that although time was not on the party’s side “ we pray with this exercise coming to completion, we are now sure that we are on track and APC is still a great party in spite of its challenges.

“However, as you know ,big party big wahala ,it is expected and with the leadership shown by President Muhammadu Buhari, we are beginning to see light at the dark end of the tunnel .’

Okorocha expressed gladness that the convention was not hijacked, adding that it was much easier for all if the right things were done.

“That is all we have been asking ,beautiful internal democracy, free and fair where people must be allowed to choose the person they want .

“That is the beauty of democracy, so anything outside this is manipulation and it is not good for democracy .’’

  • Presidential Ticket : APC divided over Goodluck Jonathan

Presidential Ticket : APC divided over Goodluck Jonathan

Plans to get immediate past President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, to run for the presidency on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, are facing attacks across the divides.

Sources said that the Otuoke, Bayelsa State-born politician, who is still a member of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, is weighing his options on whether or not to contest the 2023 elections on the platform of the APC.

The APC has zoned its presidential ticket to the South, while the PDP has left its ticket open, with a plan to take a decision a few days to the presidential primaries, which must be concluded between April 4 and June 3, 2022, according to the 2023 election timetable unveiled by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, last weekend.

Party leaders and politicians, yesterday kicked against plans to draft Jonathan into the 2023 race, just as Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State said that moves by the APC to zone the Presidency to the South in 2023 is not a threat to the PDP.

    North deceiving Jonathan—PDP source

A close ally of the former President noted in confidence that the North is deceiving Jonathan to contest.

The PDP leader, from the South said: “He would be under pressure to run but the truth of the matter is that it is to the advantage of the North.

“They (North) are deceiving him to run for only four years. The minimum term any Nigerian can run is eight years. He has done six years and they (North) are asking him to do one term; the moment he is two years in office, he will be dragged to the Supreme Court and they (North) own the Supreme Court.

“By the time the Supreme Court rules, he would be ousted and his Vice will be asked to be the substantive president. So, he should not allow himself to be deceived. He has to be careful.”

He’ll be a spoiler to South — Osuntokun

Contacted, Mr Akin Osuntokun, former Political Adviser to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, said the former President would be a spoiler and a traitor to the South if he accepted the offer.

“If he likes himself, I don’t think he should run. What they want him to do is to cheat the South. I doubt if Jonathan will offer himself as a traitor to the South by accepting the proposal. To me, he will be a spoiler for the South. Jonathan should be smarter than that. Let’s look at the logic of it. I am sure he will be tempted by the offer but if you look at the logic of it, he is being offered the back seat. Some people are putting up the proposition to him but I am almost certain that he may not accept it because it will damage him.”

    I’m not aware he’s running—Bode George

Speaking on the issue, former Deputy National Chairman of the PDP, Chief Olabode George, said the former president had not informed him of his decision to run for presidency in 2023.

George said: “I am not aware that he (Jonathan) wants to run and I am not aware that the APC has reached out to him. But, he promised coming to see me, I will ask and confirm from him when he comes.”

We can’t replace failure with failure—Shettima

President of Arewa Youths Consultative Forum, Alhaji Yerima Shettima, urged the former President not to throw his hat in the ring because Nigerians want something new.

Shettima said: “Nobody can stop him from contesting; it is his constitutional right to contest. If I have my way, I will advise him not to contest because Nigerians cannot wait to see something different from what we have now. Nigerians cannot go back to him because things went bad under him. Nobody can stop him from contesting but we cannot replace failure with failure.”

It’s his decision—Oladunjoye, Ogun APC spokesperson

Spokesperson of the APC in Ogun State, Mr. Tunde Oladunjoye said Jonathan is free to contest because “it is his personal decision.”

On him joining the APC, Oladunjoye said: “I cannot speak on behalf of the party at the national level because with the calibre of the former president, he will be admitted first at the national level before going to his ward to register.

“Article Nine of the APC Constitution states that ‘membership of the party shall be open to any citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, who has attained the age of 18 years and who accepts the aims and objectives of the party, provided that such a person is not a member of any other political party or any organisation whose policies and programmes

are inconsistent with those of the party.’”

He has to cross the bridge—Ondo APC spokesperson

Also speaking, Publicity Secretary of the APC in Ondo State, Alex Kalejaiye said: “The decision would be taken by the national leadership of the party. However, the APC does not discriminate against any Nigerian, who finds it appealing, on account of performance and disposition to the physical and economic development of Nigeria. We do appreciate and welcome men of honour like the former president, who can add more value to what we are doing, in the overall interest of Nigerians.

“The speculation that he would like to contest on arrival remains what it is. Every bona fide member has the inalienable right to participate in an electoral process. However, the former president has to cross the bridge before debating the issue of eligibility for whatever position. It has to be a step at a time, and party constitution will guide appropriately.”

  • Revealed! How Obasanjo knelt before Atiku to clinch PDP’s presidential ticket in 2003

Revealed! How Obasanjo knelt before Atiku to clinch PDP’s presidential ticket in 2003

Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka on Thursday revealed how former President Olusegun Obasanjo knelt down for then Vice President Atiku Abubakar in his desperate bid to secure the ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2003 poll.

The revelation came as the Nobel laureate gave a rare insight into the high-stake lobbying and negotiations that preceded the PDP’s presidential primaries in which Atiku was highly favoured to win at the expense of his then boss Obasanjo.

Besides, Soyinka spoke on how genuine efforts by Chief Bola Ige to reposition the energy sector as Power Minister between 1999 and 2000 were sabotaged by Obasanjo.

Soyinka was replying a question at a special reading session to mark the presentation of his latest book, “Quis Custodiet Ipsos Custodes?: Gani’s Unfinished Business”, at the Freedom Park, Lagos.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Louis Odion, one-time Edo State Information Commissioner asked the literary giant whether he believed a sensational claim last year by Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose of witnessing Obasanjo going down on his knees in Tripoli before the late President Muamar Ghaddafi in his desperate bid to secure the Libyan strongman’s support for an extension of his chairmanship of the African Union (AU), since the former Nigerian President has neither denied nor confirmed the account.

Fayose’s account was published by an Abuja-based monthly magazine, The Interview.

Ghaddafi was younger than Obasanjo. Libya is smaller in size and population compared to Nigeria.

Responding, Soyinka said he had no cause to doubt Fayose, given his knowledge of how Obasanjo did the “unthinkable” when his aspiration for a second term in office was similarly threatened in 2003.

Said he: “Before the PDP primaries in January 2003, Obasanjo got everyone he knew could reach me on the surface on the earth including Yemi Ogunbiyi and my son, to get me to help him intercede when it was clear that (Abubakar) Atiku was in a position to take his job. He knew Atiku had a lot of regard for me and calls me ‘Uncle’.”

In the now famous BBC interview few days to PDP’s 2003 primaries, Atiku had declared that he was under tremendous pressure from his supporters to contest the ticket against Obasanjo but was yet to make up his mind in what triggered panic in Obasanjo’s camp.

The pressure was intense,” the literary giant recounted. “Of course, I could not have knelt before Atiku not to embark on a course of action that would lead to his boss’ disgrace. But I can confirm to you that Obasanjo as President knelt down before Atiku so that he would not lose his job.

But I warned Atiku that for making Obasanjo to kneel down for you, be sure you would have to pay heavily for that. I guess my warning came to pass if you remember Atiku’s dramatic change of fortune once Obasanjo was sworn in for a second term of office.”

As expected, yesterday’s book reading turned out a day of reminiscences of many bizarre dramas and unsavory episodes that characterised Obasanjo’s reign as two-term president betweeen 1999 and 2007. The panel of disscussants included frontline rights activist-lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) and Mr. Sam Omatseye, author and Chairman of “The Nation” Editorial Board, and was moderated by Mr. Kunle Ajibade, award-winning author and Executive Director of “TheNews/Tempo”.

The roll-call at the event included literary colossus Prof. J. P. Clark, Colonel Tony Nyiam (retd) and Mr. Jahman Anikulapo.

Dispelling the notion that the long-running disagreement he has with Obasanjo is personal, Soyinka said his motivation is the desire that those he described as cause of the nation’s problems do not continue to recycle themselves as the solution.

He also dismissed Obasanjo as a hypocrite for denying that he did not have a hand in the third term agenda in 2006.

Said the playwright: “I remember I was invited to a conference in Germany around the time the third term game was unfolding in Nigeria. Then, I received this frantic call from officials at the Nigerian embassy who confided in me that they had been told to prepare for Obasanjo’s third term in office. They expressed fears that should it succeed, the country might be plunged into a serious crisis. They were of the view that I could use my leverage to talk to him or help mobilise public opinions to dissuade him.

At the conference proper, I made sure I continually made poignant innuendos in the direction Obasanjo sat that day. But, typically, he kept shrugging his shoulders and looking the other way.

But when the opportunity came for a closer interaction at the dinner, I pointedly told him that ‘Obasanjo, you know you cannot try third term’. Suddenly, he charged back at me, saying, ‘Wole, you only have one vote!’ I remember the Nigerian envoy then to Germany, Prof. Tunde Adeniran, jovially remarked that, ‘Ah, Mr. President, Wole Soyinka has more than one vote o. You know when he says anything, people listen across the world.’

As soon as Obasanjo left the venue, I told Adeniran that ‘with what you’ve just said, be sure you’ve lost your job’. True, soon afterwards, Adeniran lost his job.”

Corroborating Soyinka, Falana said contrary to Obasanjo’s continued denial, the former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice alluded in her book to how the former Nigerian leader prevailed on George Bush to support his third term bid. This, Falana said, Obasanjo never refuted.

On the parlous energy situation in the country, Soyinka recalled that Obasanjo did not only frustrate Ige but also humiliated him.

He said: “This was a man who said after Bola Ige died that we put somebody there, Bola Ige who did not know his left from right. He owes Bola Ige for maligning him, after humiliating him after sabotaging his genuine efforts to transform the power sector. It was sabotage and nothing less than a terrorist act against the electricity supply of the country.

Bola Ige was frustrated and his works sabotaged. In fact, he had done his homework before he took office. He summoned a group of experts and mapped out the transformation of the sector. But, he was sabotaged from the inside. Bola Ige asked Obasanjo to remove one Suleman Bello, who was the managing director of the corporation then. The consequences we are suffering today. Obasanjo collaborated and protected the system headed by Mr. Suleman Bello. I dare Obasanjo to meet me one on one on any podium to debate the power project.”

  • 2019: I won’t change party’s decision to zone presidential ticket to North – Makarfi

2019: I won’t change party’s decision to zone presidential ticket to North – Makarfi

…says party is working to bring former members to its fold

The Caretaker Committee Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, said on Monday reassured party faithfuls that he (Makarfi) won’t alter party’s decision to zone the 2019 presidential ticket to the Northern region.

The chairman also noted that the party has kickstarted the process of reconciling aggrieved foundation members of the party, who defected to the All Progressives Congress, APC, back to its fold.

The former governor noted that the work of the newly inaugurated reconciliation and discipline committee have recorded progress in this regard, adding that all the efforts were towards ensuring that the party form a formidable force to defeat the APC in the 2019 general elections.

Makarfi, who stated this while speaking to journalists in Kaduna on how to reposition the party, added that aside from wooing the foundation members of the party, the reconciliation committee was also mandated to extend its dragnet to other noted politicians in the APC and other party who are desirous to join the PDP.

The two-term Senator, who refused to comment further on the matter, said “we (reconciliation and disciplinary committee) are happy they have started well. We will not be reporting their progress because their progress is our strength. People will see it when they will see it.

“Just before the convention, you will recall that we inaugurated committee for reconciliation and discipline. The reconciliation committee is mandated to reconcile all aggrieved members since formation of the party, not only aggrieved members based on Makarfi/Sherrif squabbles. All aggrieved members of PDP since the PDP was put in place.

“And also to try to bring in even those who have never been in the party before. So, their mandate is wider than the Makarfi/Sherrif political conflict.”

Besides, he warned those who are bent on undermining the party through anti-party activities to desist, otherwise, the wrath of PDP constitution would soon descend on them.

Saying that the party has leant its lessons from the past and under the present political dispensation, the Caretaker Chairman added that convention slated for December “is part of the cleansing process to bring credible people on board for the party and also bring sanity to some states that have defied political solution.”

He said, “I am happy to say that all the factional divisions in those states, from the report I have received have been sitting together and accommodating each other to participate in the caretaker committee.

“That is the first stage of bringing all elements in the party together. I heard reports from Lagos and Kebbi, they are all doing fine. Other states are meeting over the weekend, based on the reports I have received. At the end of the day we will be there, God’s willing.”

Meanwhile, the Chairman also reaffirmed the party’s position on the zoning of the presidency to the north and the national chairmanship to the south which was taken at the Port-Harcourt May 21, convention of the party.

While shedding light on the issue of electing credible national officers for the party, Makarfi explained that even as the presidency was zone to the north, the party was yet to decide which part of the north would get the slot (Northwest, north central or northeast).

He also the party had not yet zone the position of the national chairmanship to any part of the south, be it southwest, southeast or south-south.

The former governor added the position of the party on the zoning formula of the party was supreme and cautioned those already campaigning for the nation’s topmost position come 2019.

Though he argued that it was their constitutional rights to do so, but that they should respect the position of the party on the matter.

Makarfi said, “Anything that has to do with the party, it is from the leadership of the party that you will hear and that is why I have reaffirmed that the zoning position of the party have not changed. It was the decision of the Port-Harcourt May 21, 2017 Convention. The decision is supreme.

“But let me also remind you that while the presidency was zone to the South in 1999, some aspirants in the North contested and went against it in their rights; but the party went with the decision it took. So, it is up to an individual to make a choice whether to abide by what the party said or go against it.
