BREAKING: Tension as #EndSARS protesters storm Presidential Villa

There was tension on Monday in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as Nigerian youths demanding an end to police brutality attempted taking the #EndSARS protest to the Presidential Villa.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the Presidential Villa also known as Aso Rock Villa or Aso Villa is the workplace and official residence of the President of Nigeria since 1991 when Nigeria moved its capital from Lagos to Abuja.

Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) intercepted the #EndSARS protesters at the John Kennedy Street as they attempted to march through the back gate of the Presidential Villa.

TNG reports the #EndSARS protesters are protesting against what they call police brutality. However, the term, #EndSARS has become a metaphor seeking for better governance in the country.

Operatives of the NPF, in an attempt to disperse the protesters from marching to the Presidential Villa, gathered at Power House in Asokoro and fired teargas.

The police have also stationed personnel in front of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) headquarters with armoured personnel carrier and water cannons ready.

Also, soldiers had earlier taken over major streets and strategic points in the FCT.

Recall that at the inception of the protest, aside from demanding SARS be scrapped, the protesters demanded that all arrested protesters be released and justice be served to deceased victims of SARS, including compensation to their families.

They equally demanded that there should be an independent committee to oversee the investigations and prosecution of any member of SARS found guilty of extra-judicial killings.

They demanded that all personnel of the disbanded SARS undergo a psychological and medical evaluation as well as retraining before they should be redeployed to other services of the police.

The protesters also demanded that the salary of the police should be increased in a manner that they will be adequately compensated for protecting the lives and property of citizens.

Meanwhile, the government has set in motion the process to meet the demands of the #EndSARS protesters, including the setting up of judicial panels of enquiry by State Governments.

BREAKING: Presidential Villa bids farewell to Director of Finance

State House Staff, led by the Permanent Secretary, Tijjani Umar, have bade farewell to the Director of Finance and Accounts (DFA), Bashir Alkali, who was recently appointed a Federal Permanent Secretary.

At a send-off dinner, on Saturday, attended by three retired permanent secretaries of State House, management staff and some senior presidential aides, Alkali was praised by colleagues as an exemplary and diligent civil servant

Alkali will resume as Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development on Sept. 30.

The 57-year old Kano-born chartered accountant was posted to State House in Aug. 2015 as DFA and was on that schedule until August 2020 when he was appointed as Permanent Secretary.

Speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary, State House described the outgoing DFA, who began his civil service career in 1987 as a Resident Auditor with the Kano State Audit Department ”as a pretty exemplary colleague in every sense of the word.”

Umar said: ”He was consummate, calm, confident and without a doubt, diligent officer. He was also courageous and caring.

”He was on top of his game, meticulous, engaging, strategic and a classic problem solver.”

While congratulating the officer on his elevation as permanent secretary, having excelled in a very competitive selection exercise, the immediate past Permanent Secretary State House, Jalal Arabi, said he had no doubt Alkali would prove his mettle in his new position.

”I want to tell you that the work has not been completed, the work starts now,” Arabi, who retired as the immediate past Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, told his successor.

The former Permanent secretary added that the new ministry was ”very interesting and at the same time challenging,” noting that from the mandate of the ministry a lot of Nigerians in dire situations looked up to it for succour.

In his comments, Nebolisa Emordi, former Permanent Secretary, State House, commended Alkali for bringing his expansive experience in the private sector, as a financial management accountant and bank manager, to bear on the civil service.

”I met him in 2015 when I was permanent secretary and I can say he is a complete gentleman, core professional, humble and ever ready to take up responsibility.

”His stint in the private sector sharpened his skills because he is not like the typical civil servant who is always waiting to be directed,” he said.

Alkali’s childhood friend, primary, secondary and tertiary school mate, Amb. Mustapha Suleiman, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, recounted fond childhood memories with the celebrant.

”We attended the same primary, secondary and university together and I want to say that I practically grew up with him even though I am slightly older than him, but we have been very close from childhood and we fetched water together in one village where we grew up together.

”All these years, I have known him to be a very hardworking, diligent and respectful gentleman and I have no doubt he has what it takes to succeed in his new assignment,” he said.

Dr Nasir Sani-Gwarzo, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, prayed God almighty to grant the permanent secretary wisdom and strength to discharge the duties of his new office with diligence, compassion and generosity.

”I believe because you are methodical and diligent, I pray you will not leave out anyone in need except that you have attended to their needs,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the senior presidential aides, the State Chief of Protocol, Amb. Lawal Kazaure while extolling the virtues of the new permanent secretary, urged him to ”remain who you are,” in his new place of assignment.

Responding, Alkali thanked serving and retired colleagues in the civil service for the goodwill, prayers and best wishes to succeed in the new assignment.

He singled out the staff of State House Finance and Accounts department for special commendation.

”We have some of the most progressive and diligent staff in State House.

”For the staff in the Finance and Accounts department, you have been most professional.

”It is to your credit that in the last five years that I have been here, we did not have a single embarrassing leakage of any financial or confidential document,” he added.

The outgoing DFA also thanked his wife and children, who accompanied him to the ceremony, for their support and understanding over the years.

”The sacrifices you have made over the years, you will still need to do a lot more because the new assignment will be quite challenging and I honestly covet your prayers,” he said.

    President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Nigerian government has confirmed that there was shooting at the nation’s seat of power, Abuja on Wednesday, saying it was an “accidental discharge” while assuring that the Villa is safe for Nigerians and foreigners alike.

This was contained in a State House press release signed by Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity.

“Following an incident involving the accidental gun discharge in the State House on Wednesday, the Presidency wishes to reassure all Nigerians and foreigners of the safety of the seat of power in the country,” the statement read.

It was reported that an incident of shooting occurred at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday involving one of the security agents attached to the Presidential Villa, which left a lady severely injured.

But Buhari’s aide has said “the security official involved is not attached to the State House”.

“He came on invitation as a witness in an ongoing investigation and was required, as is the rule, to surrender his weapon at the gates before entry,” he said, adding that “It was in the process of conducting the normal safety precaution as professionally required that the pistol accidentally fired”.

The media and publicity aide to Buhari, however, confirmed that the lady was hit by the “accidental” shot. He also said the security operative was affected as well.

“Unfortunately, the security operative and the lady by his side, a caterer in the State House, were hit by a pellet of the bullet,” Shehu said.

“Both of them were attended to at the clinic and discharged,” he added.
