Lagos Central: Controversy trails emergence of Gomez as PDP candidate

Controversy on Monday, trailed the PDP Lagos Central senatorial primary election and the reported emergence of Mr Wale Gomez as the party’s candidate.

Many ad hoc delegates, leaders and party faithful had gathered at No 67, Adelabu Str. Surulere, the earlier announced venue for the primary all day before they were hinted that the venue had shifted to Obele Odan Community Hall, Fujah Street in Surulere.

Before many of the delegates at the earlier venue would converge at the new venue, the exercise had been conducted and a winner allegedly emerged in person of Gomez.

Also, before a correspondent, who monitored the exercise could get to the new venue, the exercise had been concluded while officials and delegates had  dispersed.

Speaking at the new venue, Mr Adegboyega Openiyi, an ad hoc delegate, said that only Gomez showed up at the venue and he was declared the winner by the returning officer.

“Only one aspirant turned up and was declared the winner through voice votes after accreditation of delegates from each local government area,” Openiyi, a delegate from Lagos Island said.

He said the  exercise was monitored by security agents and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

However, Mr Sherrif Adepote, an ad hoc delegate from Lagos Mainland local government area, who rushed in from the earlier venue, decried the development, saying it would further narrow the chances of PDP in the 2023 general elections.

Adepote said: “This kind of game cannot lead us anywhere in PDP, we will remain where we are.

“Initially, we heard that the primary will hold at NAPTIP building and we were waiting there until we heard of the change of venue this evening and before we got here, they said the exercise had been conducted.

“It is shoddy and it is not acceptable. At the end of the day, we must sit down and resolve things,” he said.

Speaking to newsmen, one of the aspirants, Mrs Victoria Oniru expressed shock, describing the exercise as “kangaroo primary”.

“I am not in contact with members of the committee. They gave us a venue for the primaries, we were there only to be told they will no longer use that venue, and when we got here, we were told the primaries had held.

‘”There was no election and the people at the new venue said somebody has won the primaries.

“This is a culture of impunity and ineptitude. Those that conducted the election, where did they come from?.”

She, however, called for cancellation of the exercise, saying that the party leadership should fix another date for a free, fair and credible primaries.

Also speaking, Dr Pearse Adetokunbo, another aspirant in the contest, said that the alleged primary would  not stand.

The exercise witnessed some hitches and protests over allegation of fake delegates list, especially when ad hoc delegates from Ikorodu, with about 58 ad hoc delegates, were voting.

The development came after delegates from four out of the five local government areas that made up the senatorial distinct had voted.

Delegates from Somolu, Kosofe, Epe and Ibeju-Lekki had voted before the disruption.

The issues resulted into several protests by delegates from Ikorodu who insisted that names of delegates on the list brought by the electoral committee were not authentic.

After huge noise and drama, the electoral committee declared the election inconclusive, citing security risk, and left the venue, but later came back to announce the result and declared a winner.

The ad hoc delegates had waited since Monday morning for the exercise, but the electoral committee only showed up at 11:50 p.m.

The accreditation and voting started simultaneously at 12:03 a.m. on Tuesday, and ended at 1:40 a.m.

The exercise was conducted under heavy security presence and was monitored by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Mr Akanbi Abidakun, who led the INEC team to observe the primary, told NAN that it was orderly and the electoral committee followed due process.

Abidakun, however, advised the party to ensure better logistics in future primary elections, saying that a single electoral committee should not be tasked with conducting primaries in more than one senatorial district.

“The party should look into this and expand the electoral committee for each senatorial district rather than keeping people waiting endlessly. They should improve on this.”

BREAKING: Gbagi accuses Gov Okowa of bribing delegates, withdraws from guber race

One of the frontline runners of the Delta State guber race, Kenneth Gbagi has withdrawn from the primaries, accusing the Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa of threatening his life, bribing delegates and having a predetermined outcome for the primaries.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) reports this was contained in a petition written by Gbagi titled: ‘ Threat to Life Anti-democratic Conduct by His Excellency Ifeanyi Okowa Governor Delta at Government House Asaba’ addressed to the PDP national chairman, state chairman and copied all critical stakeholders.

In his narrative, Gbagi said: “On arriving at the Government House, Asaba the venue of the meeting I was surprised to be accosted by the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Hon. Ovie Agas who pleaded with me that contrary to the message sent out inviting all ad hoc delegates that he was requested by His Excellency to ensure that I and several other persons were not allowed into the venue.

“I insisted that as a former Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and as an ad hoc delegate I was entitled to be told the reason why I was persona non grata in a PDP event that some persons who are not quite two years old in the party are entitled to attend.

“When pleas by the Chief of Staff to the Governor of Delta State did not move me out of the premises of Government House, I was accosted by a gun totting ADC to the Governor Mr. Frank Omokhoje Longe who told me he had orders to shoot me and nothing would happen if I did not immediately vacate the premises of Government House, Asaba. That I had been told that the Governor does not want me in PDP or any PDP meetings henceforth and I was still insisting on attending the meeting.

“Whilst the altercations were going on the Chairman of my local government council identified me on the list of delegates as an ad hoc delegate and pointed out that my name was on the list. But all pleas fell on deaf ears.

“It transpired that the reason Senator Dr. Okowa called the meeting was because all available information was that both within the party and in the larger Delta State people were making it clear that his preferred CANDIDATE in the forth coming primary gubernatorial primary election, Rt Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori was unacceptable.

“The Governor called the meeting to intimidate and witch hunt ad hoc delegates using the pomp and circumstances of his office and tax payers’ money to overawe the delegates. The governor issued threats against any person who he said would engage in anti-party activities by voting against his preferred candidate in the forthcoming primary elections of PDP.

“He also openly offered inducement in the real of between N1 Million Naira and above if the delegates would vote for Hon. Sherrif Oborevwori. He said there would be more, if they toed his line. On the spot, each ad hoc delegate who was allowed into the venue was given N100,000 (One Hundred Thousand Naira) with N1 million promised at the venue.

“Senator Dr. Okowa is bent on sinking the fortunes of PDP in Delta State with an unmarketable candidate for reasons best known to him, but using threats to the life of members of PDP
crosses the line. I could have been killed by a person whose salary is paid by the people of Delta State simply because I wanted to participate in the political life of my party; if I were a nobody the story might have been different.

“I was a founding member of PDP 1998 and I have been a member of PDP since then till date. I served as Honorable Minister for Education and it is still on record that in 9 months we founded 13 universities all over the federation.

“I will not continue to pretend that the party which we founded 23 years ago and brought to Delta State and by the grace of God has won every Governorship election since 1999 has not changed beyond all recognition by the above acts.

“It is therefore my humble view that as a Foundation member of the Party from 1998 to date, a former Minister for Education, having validly obtained my expression of interest and nomination form, screened by the screening panel and issued a certificate to contest the Governorship election, my refusal today as a ad hoc delegate is a clear act of hostility, desperation and threat to life.

“I hereby withdraw my participation in the primaries since Governor Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa, contrary to all his promises and pledges that there will be a free, fair and level playing ground is untrue since he has pre-determined the primary election”.

House of Reps member loses bid to return to Abuja for fifth tenure

The ambition of Dr Pat Asadu representing Nsukka/Igboeze South Federal constituency to return to the House of Representative in 2023 for the fifth time suffered a setback on Sunday.

He was beaten to the third place at the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) primary election held at Nsukka.

Chief Vita Abba emerged as the winner having polled 91 votes out of the 111 votes casted at the election.

The runner up Mr Clinton Isiwu scored 11 votes while Asadu got two votes. Messrs Chidi Obetta, Aniegbulam Ezeugwu and Chukuemeka Asogwa got one vote each.

Announcing the result, the Returning Officer, Mr Chinedu Onu, thanked delegates for conducting themselves in orderly manner at the primary election.

Onu said all the 111 delegates accredited for the primary election, voted, but four of the votes were invalidated.

In his acceptance remark, Abba expressed appreciation to the delegates for voting for him and promised that he would not disappoint the party if elected at the 2023 general elections.

“This victory is victory for PDP; victory for justice and victory for democracy in our constituency.

“I thank all delegates and the party for finding me worthy to fly the party’s flag in 2023,’’ Abba said.

Mr Bradan Uzoagba, who led Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) team to monitor the primary election, described the exercise as free and fair.

Isiwu who placed second said he accepted the result in good faith as the election was free and fair.

  • APC and issues of free primaries, presidential ‘fraudsters’ – By Ehichioya Ezomon

APC and issues of free primaries, presidential ‘fraudsters’ – By Ehichioya Ezomon

Barely a week to the primaries of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2023 polls, the intrigues presaging the processes of choosing the presidential candidate linger in the party.

Actually, the undercurrents in the APC don’t inspire confidence that the party will conduct free, fair, transparent and credible primaries to pick its standard bearer for the general election.

This doubt is reinforced by the scheming that preceded the March 2022 National Convention of the APC that produced a “consensus” candidate at the behest of President Muhammadu Buhari, who browbeat the powerful state governors on the party’s platform.

A likely scenario is happening, with the power brokers playing hide-and-seek over zoning of the presidential slot to Southern Nigeria that looked like a fait accompli a few weeks ago.

Now, without a clear-cut statement by the APC on zoning, some Northern aspirants have begun to show real interest in the presidency, thus muddying further the political waters in the party.

Interestingly, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) seems a step ahead of the APC, with its bold declaration of the presidency open to all Nigerians irrespective of geopolitical zones, North or South or sections of the country.

This has greatly reduced the political temperature in the PDP that faces a Herculean task of wresting power from the APC it’s accused of running the country aground in just seven years in power.

Meanwhile, there’s an unprecedented number of aspirants angling to be president of Nigeria on the platform of the APC, with many of them posturing as pretenders rather than contenders for the post.

Their un-seriousness is shown in various forms: Multiple aspirants from one state; obtaining N100 million Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms without canvassing for primary votes; acquiring additional nomination forms for either governorship or senatorial position; and dropping from the race, with flimsy excuses, when faced with losing the presidency and their ministerial seats.

For instance, Ogun State, which’s produced a Head of State, a President, an undeclared winner of the Presidency, a Head of an Interim National Government, and an incumbent Vice President, has thrown up several aspirants, who’ve purchased and returned the nomination forms for the May 30 and 31, 2022, primaries in Abuja.

In practical terms, the presidential aspirants from Ogun outnumber those from each of the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria, with four aspirants from the entire Northern Nigeria; five from the South-South; six from the South-East; and eight from the South-West.

As polity watchers query, why would an aspirant spend a princely N100 million to secure the APC nomination forms and abstain from canvassing for votes to pick the party flagbearer?

That simply is shaping out to be a “presidential fraud” by political merchants either “cajoled” or “forced” into the race, to front for others or serve as spoilers, or merely on ego trips, scheming to add the prefix, “former presidential aspirant,” to their résumé.

Some aspirants, not wanting to put their eggs in one basket, have obtained nomination forms for the presidency and governorship or senatorial position, and appeared or will appear for screening accordingly. But will they also participate at both primaries?

Will former Edo State Governor and National Chairman of the APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, who’s obtained the presidential and senatorial forms, and presented himself for screening for Senate, appear for screening for the presidency and contest at the senatorial and presidential primaries, in that order?

Ditto for Senate President Ahmad Lawan and Cross River State Governor Ben Ayade (and other undisclosed aspirants), who’ve obtained the combined N120 million nomination forms for the respective position of president and senator!

While Lawan, a long-time lawmaker, represents Yobe North in the Senate, Oshiomhole aims to represent Edo North, and Prof. Ayade, who rounds-off his two-term governorship in May 2023, attempts to represent Cross River North in the National Assembly (NASS).

Ironically, unlike Oshiomhole, who appeared physically at the senatorial screening for the APC aspirants, other wily Nigerian politicians, aspiring for the presidency they’re certain or unsure of securing the ticket, have devised a strategy of having proxies or “stand-ins” for the lower position of governor or senator.

If they failed to pick the presidential ticket, they’d promptly urge the proxies for the lower position of governor or senator to “step down” for them during the window of substitution of candidates offered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Presidential aspirants appearing for screening and/or attending the primaries for governor or senator is an exhibition of political greed in politicians, who, in some cases, are outsmarted by their stand-ins refusing to step down from the positions they’re propped up for.

It’s about time Nigerian politicians showed some level of character and credibility, such as displayed by former Abia State Governor Orji Uzor Kalu, and Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

Dr Kalu, the Senate Chief Whip, and an early bird for the presidency, made zoning of the APC ticket to the South-East a pre-condition for his contesting for the plum job. But sensing that the seat would elude the South-East on the APC pedestal, he withdrew his aspiration, and settled for re-election into the Senate.

A greedy politician in Kalu’s shoe would’ve simultaneously pursued the presidential and senatorial ambitions, knowing that they’ve no chance in hell of securing the ticket for the president.

Kudos goes also to Dr Ganduje, who, faced with exodus from the APC on his watch in Kano, dropped his aspiration for Senate to represent Kano North currently occupied by Senator Barau Jubrin.

Jubrin, chairman of Senate Committee on Appropriation, who hails from Ganduje’s senatorial zone, was reportedly “a member of the influential G-7 faction that challenged Ganduje’s control of the APC structure in Kano,” resulting in the mass defection of members to the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) that’s sweeping Kano.

Nigeria, and particularly the APC, needs more Gandujes, who can sacrifice their ambitions “for the overall interest of the party” that’s facing a headwind of internal convulsion and defections.

The presidential primary processes are dicey for the APC. So, the party should stand on the principles it espouses, and conduct free, fair, transparent and credible polls, to weed out the “political fraudsters” from the crowded field of aspirants.

This would allow for emergence of the APC flagbearer among three serious and promising contenders: The National Leader of the APC and former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu; Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; and Transportation Minister and former Rivers State Governor, Rt Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.

The APC has one week to answer the crucial question that will determine its prospects in the 2023 general election, and future as a viable party that outlives a single administration it birthed in 2015.

Mr Ndudi Elumelu, Minority Leader, House of Representatives, has secured a return ticket as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for a third term to represent the Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency of Delta.

Elumelu on Sunday polled a total of 80 votes out of the total votes cast by 132 delegates at the House of Representatives primary election held in Asaba.

His closest rival, Princess Pat Ajudua, polled 35 votes while Mr Kanyinebi Mobushi got 17 votes.

The Returning Officer, Chief Funkekeme Solomon, declared Elumelu the winner of the contest for polling the highest number of votes in what he described as free, fair and transparent election.

According to Solomon, at the close of voting, 132 delegates were accredited, no void votes and all the votes were counted.

“At the end, Mr Kanyinebi Mobushi, scored 17 votes; Mrs Pat Ajudua, scored 35 votes while Mr Ndudi Elumelu, scored 80 votes.

” Elumelu, having scored the highest votes, is hereby declared winner and returned as the candidate of the PDP for the Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency in the 2023 general election,” Solomon said.

Speaking after his declaration as the winner, Elumelu assured his constituents of more robust representation and dividends of democracy.

He said though he emerged top in the primaries, there was no loser as it was a family affair and not a contest.

Elumelu thanked the governor, the PDP and the people of the constituency for giving him the platform to serve.

He expressed confidence that PDP would win the general elections without hitch in the state and at the centre.

The election was closely monitored by a combined team of security agencies, the media and other stakeholders.

  • 2023: Abia Speaker wins PDP’s ticket for House of Reps

2023: Abia Speaker wins PDP’s ticket for House of Reps

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Sunday conducted primary elections to elect candidates for the House of Representatives and state assembly.

The exercise, which took place under stiff security, was rancour-free in the areas monitored.

It, however, took place several hours behind schedule in many centres.

In Umuahia south, it was scheduled to begin by 9:00 am but could not start until about 2:45 pm.

For Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Mr Chinedum Orji, emerged as the winner.

Orji pulled 86 votes to defeat five other contestants and his closest rival, Mr Obi Aguocha, scored eight votes.

Chidebere Nwachukwu, John Nwadinobi, John Ndubuisi and Kelechi Onuzuruike pulled two, two, one and nil, respectively.

The Election Committee Chairman, Mr Tony Mezie, said that 99 delegates took part in the exercise.

For the house of assembly polls, a cleric, Mr Ugochukwu Uchegbu, won the ticket for Umuahia Central State Constituency.

Uchegbu defeated eight other contestants in a three ad-hoc delegates per ward election that had 10 delegates.

In a post-election speech, a visibly elated Uchegbu thanked God for his emergence and hailed the entire process as “peaceful and most transparent”.

“This is just a step. It is a motivation. There is no vanquished.

“My co-contestants have congratulated me and I urge them to support me as we move on,” he said.

One of the contestants, Chief Jude Ndukwe, however, expressed concern over the party’s adoption of three ad-hoc delegates for the indirect primaries.

Also, the lawmaker representing Umuahia South State Constituency, Chief Jerry Uzosike, clinched the ticket for his re-election bid.

Uzosike described the outcome of the election as the voice of the people of Umuahia South.

He said: “Umuahia South people through the votes have voted for good governance, good service and good representation.

“I want to thank the youths, stakeholders and people of Umuahia for their support and God Almighty for this victory.

“My constituents should expect more from me in the years ahead and I welcome my opponents to join me in building the constituency.”

The Chairman of Umuahia South Local Government Area, Mr Humphrey Chukwudi, described the election as peaceful and transparent.

The Youth Leader of Nsirimo Ward, Mr Malachy Nwagwu, said that the election played a vital role in ensuring that credible individuals were given an opportunity to run for political positions.
