Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has assured that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will have a hitch-free presidential primary election on Monday.

Akeredolu said this in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Richard Olatunde on Saturday in Akure.

Akeredolu is the Chairman, sub-committee on Security and Compliance for the APC Special Convention and Presidential Primary Election.

He said that the party was ready for the election, adding that work had already commenced at the venue, with security and other necessary activities as priority.

The governor said the APC, being a disciplined political party with disciplined members, would surely have a hitch-free primary.

“This is not our first time using this Eagle Square, we have knowledge of the venue already.

“We have already started work on the venue, on security and everything. So, We are ready. I think we are good to go.

“ We are going to have a hitch-free primary. We are a disciplined party and our members will show discipline here on the d-day.” he said.

  • Ex APC Chairman explains why only 13 aspirants were cleared

Ex APC Chairman explains why only 13 aspirants were cleared

Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, Chairman, All Progressives Congress (APC) 2023 Presidential Screening Committee has explained why only 13 out of 23 presidential aspirants that appeared before it were cleared.

Oyegun, who was a former National Chairman of the APC, said while submitting the 7-man committee report to the party`s National Chairman  Sen. Abdullahi Adamu that

“All the aspirants were engaged on the issue of consensus and it was a pleasant surprise that 98 to 99 per cent of them agreed that the party is supreme, that whatever it finally decides with proper consultations, would likely be accepted.

“Though one aspirant said that; yes I will accept consensus so long as it is settled on me.

“First, we had 23 presidential aspirants that we interacted with and my first comment is that we are indeed a very luck party,” Odigie-Oyegun said.

He added that though 23 presidential aspirants presented themselves for screening, there were other prominent Nigerians within and outside the country that applied but could not proceed with their applications.

He said the quality of the aspirants were unquestionable, adding that the committee was surprised at the active participation of youthful members of the party.

He added that the committee was particularly surprised by the life accomplishment of the youths in the race, their understanding of the country`s situations and why they wanted to have the privilege of governing her.

“What was important was that they so believed in the country and the party that they were able to pay the sums they paid for its Expression of Interest and Nomination forms to participate in the process.

“So, I think the party ought to part itself on the back for that,’’ Odigie-Oyegun who was a former national chairman of the APC and a former Edo governor, said.

He explained that the committee`s report was in two aspects; the basic constitutional qualification to aspire to be a president of the country, and the ability to lead and background of the aspirant.

He said all the aspirants had the constitutional basic requirements and were qualified in that regard, because it was basic and simple.

“But we are a governing party, and we are keying on continuing the process and replacing at the proper time, our president with yet another member of the party,” he said.

He said for this reason, the ability of the aspirants to lead, their background, experience and understanding of the Nigerian situation became critical.

He said their ideas on how difficult issues and problems could be addressed and how they could move the country forward also became a critical consideration at the screening.

“It is on that bases, that who you are, what are you and what have you achieved.

“And the understanding of your mission and what you think you can do to move the country forward made our final list.

“I don’t want to read the names, I think we will leave that to you, but we have a short list which brought the number severely down to 13.

“We could have cut it a little shorter, but we wanted deliberately all the younger elements to surface,” Odigie-Oyegun said.

He said the idea was for the younger aspirants to be seen and noticed and handed over to the party’s leadership to decide who their preferred candidate would be for 2023 presidential election.

He said it was also an opportunity to showcase the kind of people that existed in the APC and within it, their youthfulness and the kind of experience they had.

This, he added, was for the world to know that the APC cared for the young and when it said the young shall aspire, it really meant it.

“This had been showcased in the report we have written.

“We only drew a word of caution that there is this cleavage that is gradually becoming centre stage in national discourse, between the North and the South and the presidency.

“And we just want to advise strongly that the party should please think of it in making its decision, address it and let it influence their thoughts because it has its own implications,” he stressed.

Odigie-Oyegun thanked the party`s leadership for the opportunity to serve in the committee, saying that though it was a sensitive and challenging assignment, it was an interesting one.

“We all profited from the assignment immensely and think the party will also profit,” he said.

He said the committee members were happy to take on the responsibility to do as much as they could do to make the work of the party lighter.

Adamu while receiving the report, said the party’s leadership would look into it.

2023: It’ll be catastrophic if Tinubu loses APC ticket – Shettima

Former Governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima has said it would be “catastrophic” if former Governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu does not emerge as the presidential flagbearer of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2023 presidential election.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that Shettima disclosed this on Friday when he featured on a programme on TVC.

“We are in a democratic situation but I’m afraid it might be catastrophic for the party. I’m not a prophet of doom; I’m an internal optimist. We have done our own bidding and by God’s grace, our candidate will emerge as the presidential flagbearer of the APC in the next 72 hours.

“It is not a subject of dispute but a question of time. He has paid the price, and yesterday in Abeokuta, he made some remarks that were deliberately distorted and quoted out of context.

“Whether they are willing to admit it or not, he played a pivotal role not only in the emergence of President Muhammadu Buhari as the candidate of the APC but in the ultimate election in 2015,” Shettima said.

  • 2023: Why I want to be Nigeria’s president – Son of late MKO Abiola

2023: Why I want to be Nigeria’s president – Son of late MKO Abiola

Son of late Chief MKO Abiola, Kola Abiola, who is a presidential aspirant on the platform of the People’s Redemption Party (PRP), has opened up on why he wants to be the president of Nigeria.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Kola, who made this known on Thursday in Enugu at a meeting with PRP’s delegates, said that his deceased father’s foray into politics was an encouragement for him.

Kola said he draws inspiration from his deceased father, Chief MKO Abiola to take interest in the 2023 presidential election.

The aspirant said that he would leverage on the ideals of the PRP to change the dynamics of politics in Nigeria and breathe fresh air into Nigerians.

“PRP is the oldest party in Nigeria today and I am in the party for the right reasons. We want to prove that things can still be done rightly. We represent a fresh idea,’’ Kola said.

He said that if voted as the president, he would ensure the full participation of youths in governance.

“I will like to see a repeat of the June 12, 1992 presidential election and the only way to do this is to reach out to youths.

“I will mobilise our youths to come out and vote because they constitute more than 60 per cent of Nigeria’s population,’’ Kola said.

He further said that his decision to contest on the platform of the PRP was a way of showing the youths that things were done rightly in Nigeria in the past.

“I joined PRP because it will deliver a lot more than me. I will do my best to get more Nigerians involved in running the country.

“My personal target is to make sure that 40 per cent of elective positions at the 2023 elections are won by PRP candidates,” he added.

Kola said that if elected as the presidential flag bearer of the PRP, he would campaign with every PRP candidate across the country.

“We will not do it by throwing money around, but by mobilising those at the grassroots,’’ he said.

Earlier, the PRP Southeast Zonal Chairman, Mr Peter Okafor, described Abiola as one of the best brains in the presidential contest.

Okafor said that Nigerians needed a president that would correct the mis-governance of the past, adding that the aspirant would deliver if given the mandate.

In a vote of thanks, one of the gubernatorial aspirants of the party in Enugu State, Mr Chukwunonye Ogbe, said that Nigeria needed a leader that would redeem the country.

TNG reports Chief MKO Abiola was the presidential candidate of the defunct Social Democratic Party at the 1992 presidential election.

He was the acclaimed winner of the election, adjudged to be the most credible in Nigeria’s history.

The election was, however, annulled by the head of the then military junta, Maj.-Gen. Ibrahim Babangida.

MKO Abiola died in detention on July 7, 1998, the day he was due to be released. The military detained him for declaring himself Nigeria’s president in spite of the annulment.

Meanwhile, the PRP is scheduled to hold its presidential primary election on June 5.

Gbagi, who is a former Minister of State for Education, also emerged as the governorship candidate of the SDP in Delta State for the 2023 governorship election in the state.

Gbagi’s emergence is coming on the heels of his withdrawal from governorship primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party held last week Thursday in Asaba.

The former Minister defected to the SDP after he fell out with Governor Ifeanyi Okowa over his open support for the PDP governorship candidate and Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Chief Sheriff Oborevwori.

Gbagi emerged as the SDP Governorship Candidate during the primary of the party held at the Ughelli Kingdom Hall in Ughelli, Delta State.

The Oginibo-born politician and industrialist was the sole governorship aspirant of the SDP.

He emerged through a voice motion moved by a delegate from Bomadi Ward 3, Mr Mike Ujobolo. The motion was supported by another delegate, Pastor Victor Agbula Igbule from Ward 6 in Udu Local Government Area.

Gbagi was subsequently declared winner and candidate of the party by SDP returning officer, Pastor Highness Akporode.

Gbagi, represented by his political adviser, Chief Austin Kpomah, commended the delegates for making him the governorship candidate of the party.

He stated that SDP will defeat the governorship candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party and All Progressives Congress – Chief Oborevwori and Senator Ovie Omo-Agege in the 2023 general elections.

The 37-year-old Okoh emerged the sole candidate of the party at the governorship primary election at the ZLP secretariat in Asaba on Wednesday.

Mr Emeka Nkwoala, the state Party Chairman and Chairman, Electoral Committee for the governorship primary, said that 75 delegates, three each from the 25 local government areas of the state, were accredited for the election.

He said that since Okoh was the sole aspirant for the position, the party, in line with the electoral guidelines and the constitution, adopted voice vote and the people affirmed his candidature.

“By the power conferred on me, and having screened the aspirant and found worthy, Mr Emmanuel Okoh, having satisfied all the conditions, is hereby declared the governorship candidate of ZLP for the 2023 general election in Delta,’’ he said.

On another Ika man of Delta North extraction planning to take over from his brother as governor, Nkwoala said politics was dynamic, adding that the trust was on capability and not about zoning.

He said that the issue of zoning the governorship seat was that of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Nkwoala added that from available statistics, all the senatorial districts in the state had taken their turns as governor and as such, it would not be out of place for Delta North to kick-start the rotation.

“ZLP is not interested in zoning, but anyone who would deliver dividends of democracy to the people of the state.

“This young man has what it takes to turn the economy of this state around for the good of the people. This is why we are fielding him to take over from Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa, his brother, come 2023,” he said.

“I will come in my own capacity to do what God wants me do for my people.

“Yes, I am from Ika North East. I will take over from my brother, Gov. Okowa, to deepen development in the state,” he said.

  • ADC presidential candidate to emerge on June 8 – National Chairman

ADC presidential candidate to emerge on June 8 – National Chairman

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) plans to hold its National Convention on June 8 in Abeokuta, Ogun, to elect its presidential candidate for 2023 general elections, an official has said.

Chief Ralph Nwosu, the National Chairman of the party said this on Tuesday in Abuja when he hosted the party’s third presidential aspirants’ forum with the theme: “Leading Forward with Knowledge-driven Collegiate Presidency”.

“ADC is poised to rescue Nigeria from the elite who are neck bent on frustrating the electorate and the masses as a whole,” he said.

Nwosu said that the party would not allow itself to be hijacked by moneybags, ahead of the 2023 general elections.

He appreciated the party’s presidential aspirants for showing their nation building prowess and willingness to work together as a team to salvage the country.

According to him, this is unlike what the Nigerian political structure is used to.

Dr Chike Okogwu, one of the party’s presidential aspirants while speaking with newsmen on the sideline of the event, said the ADC was working on building a political party that would carry all the people along.

He said the party’s aspirants were working as a united front to bring about a new government that would enthrone good governance and improve the living conditions of Nigerians.

“Persons with disability, women, the old, the vulnerable and the weak, everybody will be carried along, that is the kind of country we are working to achieve.

“We need a united Nigeria, and that is what ADC is practicing and working to achieve, politics of unification and oneness.

“We are not aspirants who are working against each other or bringing each other down, we are all working to achieve one common goal of making the country better for us,” he said.

He said that Nigeria was divided across religious and ethnic lines, adding that there was need to unite the country in the interest of all.

On the possibilities of having a concensus presidential candidate for 2023 poll, Okogwu said it would rather go through the process to bring up an acceptable candidate that would be supported by all members.

“In ADC, there will be only one presidential candidate and we will all support whoever emerge to make sure that the party succeeds in enthroning a new government come 2023,” he said.

The ADC has 12 presidential aspirants wishing to slug it out at the primaries.

The aspirants included Prof. Kingsley Moghalu, Dr Mani Ibrahim, Mrs Joyce Nsaka, Dr Chike Okogwu, Dr Chukwuka Monye, Ms Angela Johnson, Mr Dumebi Kachikwu, and Ms Chichi Ojei

Others were Dr Muhammed Lamido, Bishop Ify-George Oforkansi, Dr Favour Ayodele and Dr Ebiti Ndok Jegede.
