My thoughts on Prince Harry’s autobiographical Spare – By Hope Eghagha

Spare, Prince Harry’s explosive tell-it-all narrative about his royal life and the reasons why he quit monarchical bondage hit the streets weeks ago and became an instant bestseller, earning him enemies, earning him some loyalists, and testing the patience and maturity of his king-father. To be sure, the peccadilloes of royal life will make great news any day, especially on social media and the tabloids. There had been intense speculations about how hard the book was going to be on the monarchy and how that arcane institution would take a vitriolic attack on it.

The media sensationalized everything about Prince Harry and made a monster of Meghan, painting her as the devil woman who was pulling the charming White Prince with her well, black charm, from the luxury, pomp, and pageantry of royal life. Both as a Black woman and as an American who does not understand the niceties and courtesies of royal life, Meghan was a fitting demon and enchantress to blame for Harry’s rebellion against his kith and kin! Lynching will remain with us for a long time!  And the foul-mouthed Piers Morgan is a lynch master per excellence who has not forgiven Meghan for choosing Harry over him! The insane Jeremy Clarkson published an essay in the Sun tabloid ‘imagining Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, stripped naked and publicly humiliated before jeering crowds! Are we still surprised that Harry had to flee racist Britain?

Autobiographies are often designed to polish, to present a viewpoint and to record aspects of history which the reading audience may not have been privy to. When royals tell personal stories, if they elect to do so, they tend to be reticent, leaving out stories that could discredit that arcane institution. The late Princess Margaret, Queen Elizabeth’s only sister authorized a biography which detailed her escapades but not in the way Harry’s recently released autobiography Spare has enthralled the world and rattled the British monarchy!

Spare! What a title! Though titled Spare, the raging prince did not spare some characters in the narrative. Somewhat ominous, loaded with innuendoes as spare as the word is for the title of a prince’s autobiography, the narrative did not spare the prince himself in documenting his somewhat wayward behaviour. By the way, the book is a good read. The ghost writer did an excellent job with the narrative both in terms of style and use of language. Spare is easy to read and comprehend. Its subject matter is intriguing. What are these royals made of? This accounts for its mass appeal. Harry spared nobody that deserved some bashing in this tell-it-all book. Camilla? The husband snatcher who now sits as Queen Consort whose disruptive presence in the Prince Charles and Lady Diana marriage caused the split in the royal marriage ultimately leading to her death, is one of the targets of Spare’s ballistic missile!

I am more interested in what has made Harry what he is. A rebellious, deeply traumatized prince who is willing to throw everything overboard no matter whose proverbial ox is gored! He has fled America well ensconced in the arms of his American sweetheart whom doomsayers have predicted would ultimately drop him and move on. I don’t have any reason to believe this. Which is not to say that a divorce cannot come into the picture someday. In the Western world, people marry and divorce at will. They add no taboo to it as we do here in Nigeria and the rest of Africa. So, if at some point, the marriage is no longer worth keeping, the lovers are going to part ways and move on.

But Harry is a wounded soul. Almost broken. He seems to be arrested in time psychologically from when the reality of the brutal circumstances of his beloved mother’s death dawned on him. He is angry with the media for hounding his mother to death. Angry with the media for coming after his wife. Angry with the racists in the monarchy who saw and see nothing good in his choice of a spouse. Angry with Camilla. Angry with his brother William. Angry with everyone. What is the root of this stream of bitterness that has blighted his soul? How did the ‘spares’ before him manage their lives without quitting royal duties in the time? Will Harry ever heal? Has he made eternal enemies that could also hound him into a tunnel of sorts in the hears ahead?

Parents must pay attention to their wards and kids. Some kids are vulnerable to uncomplimentary words and actions. Some may say Harry overreacted. If a child has been cast as a worthless person, it could result in such crisis. Some adults are damaged kids arising from the actions of their parents. Too many damaged adults walk the streets these days. Kids who were abused sexually or verbally. In her days, Princess Margaret did not hide from the media. She defied the press men who wrote lurid reports about her. We are told that ‘the carefree royal dismissed press reports and was defiant about her extravagant lifestyle’.

Now, I don’t know whether Harry will ever attain happiness traveling this route. There is sweetness in vendetta. But only for a while. Trust, brotherhood, and friendship are forever broken. If Harry returns to England for his father’s coronation, he will be kept as an outsider. No serious conversations can take place wherever he is present. Initiating dialogue with him could also be difficult. His next book or interview could explode in the face of the initiator. But the child in Harry needs a succour, needs a father, needs a mother. Who will be that father? Who will be that mother? So, in my view, any reconciliation must include the love of Harry’s life, the supposed Pretty Black Enchantress and Mother from the rebel colony of America, a nation which rejected the monarchy and dictatorial ways of Great Britain in 1776. Any attempt to persecute Meghan would only bring back haunting memories of his mother’s tragic ‘disappearance!

In my short foray into mental health counselling, I have encountered many broken adults who are not able to deal with contemporary issues because of psychological baggage from their childhood. Some are wife beaters and abusers of children. Broken mothers do not have enough compassion in them to bring up rounded children. These kids may not be royalty or spares; but the psychological reaction of some of them are like Harry’s. True healing for Harry must come from King Charles 111, by opening his heart through back channels and embracing his son from the depth of his heart, and save the monarchy from further embarrassment!

Prince Harry reveals how he lost his virginity to an older woman

38-year-old Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry has revealed how he lost his virginity to an older woman at a busy pub, adding that the lady treated him like a  young stallion.

According to him; in 2001, while he was still a student at Eton College in Windsor when one of the Royal Family‘s bodyguards Marko paid him a visit.

At the beginning of the meeting, Prince Harry says he suspected Marko had heard about the one-night stand – which he described as a ‘humiliating’ experience.

Over lunch in a cafeteria in the city centre, the bodyguard – who had a ‘sombre look’ on his face – told the Prince that he had been sent to ‘find out the truth’.

The father-of-two wrote: ‘I suspected he was referring to my recent loss of virginity, a humiliating episode with an older woman who liked macho horses and who treated me like a young stallion.

‘I mounted her quickly, after which she spanked my ass and sent me away. One of my many mistakes was letting it happen in a field, just behind a very busy pub. No doubt someone had seen us.’

However, the real reason Marko had been sent to check up on Harry was because King Charles’ press office had been informed a newspaper had evidence of him taking drugs -which Harry said was ‘all lies’.

Three years after his rendezvous with the anonymous older woman, Prince Harry started dating Chelsea Davy.

The couple – who met while attending schools in London – dated on-and-off for six years from 2004 after Harry travelled to Zimbabwe, where Chelsy’s millionaire father owns and runs a game reserve, during his gap year.

In November, reality star Catherine Ommanney, 50, claimed she had a two-month fling with the Prince in 2006 – when he was 21 and she was 34.

Catherine said in an interview with The Sun that she first met Prince Harry, now 38, in a bar in Chelsea while he was still in a long-term on-off relationship with socialite Chelsy Davy.

There, she says, they ‘shared a cigarette on the steps outside and [Harry] really opened-up to [her]’.

After going back inside, she claims Harry made them all bacon sandwiches, play-fought with his friends and gave her a kiss before heading home.

Catherine claims they met a few more times before the romance fizzled out and it wasn’t until 2009, a year after she married her second husband (from whom she is now separated) that the two bumped into each other again at a polo match.

She told the Sun she ‘hopes Meghan looks after him’, and that she wishes Harry nothing but ‘happiness and success’.

She says that after meeting in a bar, the pair then went to Eclipse nightclub in South Kensington together, before heading to one of his friend’s houses.

The Duchess of Sussex also developed a social media presence. This included The Tig (2014–2017) lifestyle blog which garnered recognition for her fashion sense and led to the creation and release of two clothing lines in 2015–2016.

During The Tig period, Meghan became involved in charity work focused primarily on women’s issues and social justice. She was married to American film producer Trevor Engelson from 2011 until their divorce in 2013.

Meghan retired from acting upon her marriage to Prince Harry in 2018 and became known as the Duchess of Sussex. They have two children, Archie and Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor.

  • Queen Elizabeth II: Prince Andrew, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will not attend State Reception at Buckingham Palace

Queen Elizabeth II: Prince Andrew, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will not attend State Reception at Buckingham Palace

As late Queen Elizabeth’s grandchildren gather for a vigil in Westminster Hall on Saturday as mourners passed through and paid their respects, Prince Andrew, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will not attend State Reception for the Queen at Buckingham Palace, Report Says.

TheNewsGuru.com gathered that despite earlier reports that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were invited to a State Reception of World Leaders on Sunday, only working members of the royal family have been invited.

The couple received an invitation to the event, hosted by Harry’s father King Charles III, and Queen Consort Camilla, earlier this week.

However, the publication reports that royal aides “insisted” Harry and Meghan were not invited and not expected to make an appearance.

The pair won’t attend after the palace officials said the reception is “for working members of the royal family,” according to a source.

Representatives for Buckingham Palace and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex did not immediately respond to request for comment.

Harry and Meghan’s relationship with the royal family has been described as tense since they stepped back as senior royals in 2020.

They joined Prince William and Kate Middleton to view floral tributes to the Queen on September 10, but it’s unclear if the promenade around Windsor Castle is a sign of reconciliation.

Prince Andrew and his daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, who are not working royals, will also not be at the reception.

However, Prince Andrew’s daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, released their first public statement since the death of the queen, saying it has been the honor of their lives to be her granddaughters.

The princesses said in a statement:”We, like many, thought you’d be here forever. And we all miss you terribly. For now dear Grannie, all we want to say is thank you.

“Thank you for making us laugh, for including us, for picking heather and raspberries, for marching soldiers, for our teas, for comfort, for joy. You, being you, will never know the impact you have had on our family and so many people around the world.”

  • We all have duty to get HIV test – Prince Harry

We all have duty to get HIV test – Prince Harry

Britain’s Prince Harry has urged his countrymen to “go and get a test’’ for HIV as he told former rugby star, Gareth Thomas, how he felt a responsibility to carry on his mother’s “unfinished’’ work.

Harry and ex-Wales captain Thomas, who were friends, chatted in-depth on a 30-minute video call to mark National HIV Testing Week.

The duke described himself as a typical guy, who just wanted to fix things and said he felt an obligation to try to continue Diana, Princess of Wales’s bid to remove the stigma surrounding the illness.

They discussed how normalising HIV testing could help achieve the goal of ending new HIV cases in the UK by 2030.

The duke, speaking from California, said: “Every single one of us has a duty, or at least an opportunity, to get tested ourselves or to make it easier for everybody else to get tested.

And then it just became a regular thing like anything else.

“This testing week, especially in the UK, or wherever you are in the world, go and get a test. Let people know that you know your status, the prince asserted. “Do it’’

As part of National HIV Testing Week, which began on Feb. 7, free HIV home test kits can be ordered in the UK at www.startswithme.org.uk or tests can be carried out at local sexual health or community clinics.

Asked what made him so passionate about advocating for HIV, Harry said.

“Once you get to meet people and you see the suffering around the world, I certainly can’t turn my back on that.’’

He continued: “Then add in the fact that my mum’s work was unfinished, I feel obligated to try and continue that as much as possible.’’

“I can never fill her shoes, especially in this particular space, but because of what she did and what she stood for and how vocal she was about this issue, it’s a converging of all these different pieces.’’

“There’s a way out of it, and if there’s a way out of it and we know there’s a solution, I’m like a typical guy. I just want to help fix things.’’

The late princess, who died in a car crash in 1997, changed the global perception of HIV and Aids, raising awareness of the condition and supporting hospices.

In the late 1980s, when many still believed the disease could be contracted through casual contact, she sat by the sickbed of a man with Aids and held his hand.

Harry described how the virus used to be a death sentence, but was now a “manageable disease.’’

He praised his mother’s empathy and curiosity and said:

“What my mum did and so many other people did at that time was to smash that wall down, kick the door open and say, ‘No, when people are suffering, then we need to learn more.

“I’ve seen a huge change. People are able and happy to talk about HIV so much more openly, but the stigma still exists and therefore the testing is still a problem.’’

When the prince publicly took a HIV test alongside the singer Rihanna in 2016, the broadcast contributed to a 500 per cent increase in the number of people requesting a test on the Terrence Higgins Trust website.

He spoke of how HIV testing had dropped 30 per cent during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Former Wales full-back Thomas, who revealed he was HIV positive in 2019, said 2Ist wouldn’t be scary if you understood what living with HIV is in 2022.

Sharing his daily medical routine with Harry, he said “At 6a.m, every single day, my alarm goes off.

“I take my HIV medication which is one tablet, and I feel that my day then begins,’’ he added.

Thomas, who came out as the first openly gay rugby union player in 2009, said it was a daunting experience to walk into a sexual health clinic.

But he said it was so much easier to test now, in the privacy of your own home, or at drop-in clinics where there are people to talk to.

  • Prince Harry, Meghan Markle welcome baby girl

Prince Harry, Meghan Markle welcome baby girl

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced Sunday the birth of their daughter Lilibet Diana, who was born in California after a year of turmoil in Britain’s royal family.

“Lili is named after her great-grandmother, Her Majesty The Queen, whose family nickname is Lilibet. Her middle name, Diana, was chosen to honor her beloved late grandmother, The Princess of Wales,” said a statement from the couple.

The child — the couple’s second, who will be eighth in line to the British throne — was born Friday in Santa Barbara and was now out of the hospital and at home.

“She weighed 7 lbs 11 oz. Both mother and child are healthy and well, and settling in at home,” the statement said.

The couple, also known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, live near Los Angeles following their decision to quit frontline royal duties early last year.

The couple sat in March for a bombshell interview with US talk show host Oprah Winfrey, triggering the royal family’s biggest crisis since Harry’s mother died in a car crash in 1997.

During the two-hour sit-down, viewed by more than 17 million people in the US and over 11 million in Britain, Harry and Meghan said racism had played a part in them quitting the UK for North America.

The couple said a senior royal had speculated how dark their child’s skin would be before he was born. Meghan’s mother is Black and her father is white.

Meghan, a former actress, also told Winfrey she was “naively” unprepared for life as a royal and had contemplated suicide while pregnant with her first child Archie.

Harry, 36, and Meghan 39, accused newspapers of racial stereotyping, particularly set against coverage of Harry’s sister-in-law, Kate, who is white.

Prince Harry was said to have a good relationship with his grandparents.

He told talk show host James Corden earlier this year that he had spoken via video call Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip since moving to the United States so they could see their great-grandson Archie.

Harry has spoken to his father multiple times since the Oprah interview came out, notably after Prince Philip’s funeral, according to British media.

In a new documentary series released last month, Harry once again emphasized that his family turned a blind eye to the struggles of his wife, saying he will “never be bullied into silence.”

Britain’s Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle, the duke and duchess of Sussex, marked the passing of Harry’s grandfather, Prince Philip, with a message on their website.

“In loving memory of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, 1921-2021. Thank you for your service … You will be greatly missed,” the pair wrote in the message.

Following a rift with the royal family, Harry and Meghan stepped back from their official royal duties and now live in the United States.

Prince Harry lands new job as tech executive

Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, has been employed as the chief impact officer of BetterUp, a $1bn Silicon Valley firm providing professional coaching, mental health advice, and immersive learning.

TheNewsGuru recalls that Harry and Meghan Markle, his wife, had step back from their royal duties at Buckingham Palace in January 2020.

According to Wallstreet Journal, Harry has taken up a top executive role at the aforenamed Silicon Valley firm as his first formal position at a private company since he stepped down as a working member of the royal family.

The new development also comes a few weeks after he and Meghan delivered a bombshell interview to Oprah Winfrey that detailed their decision to leave the United Kingdom.

Being a chief impact officer at BetterUp, Harry will help with product strategy decisions, charitable collaborations, and advice on topics related to mental health — having already worked closely with mental health charities.

He was quoted as stating that he hoped to be able to “create impact in people’s lives” by working with the company to provide “proactive coaching” for personal development, increased awareness, and “an all-round better life”.

“Often because of societal barriers, financial difficulty, or stigma, too many people aren’t able to focus on their mental health until they’re forced to,” the Duke of Sussex, 36, was quoted to have said.

“This is about acknowledging that it isn’t so much what is wrong with us, but more about what happened to us over the course of life. I want us to move away from the idea that you have to feel broken before reaching out for help.”

No one from family has apologised for lack of support – Prince Harry

Prince Harry says no one from the royal family has apologised to him and Meghan after they revealed they needed to leave due to a lack of support.

“The feeling is that this was our decision and therefore the consequences are on us,’’ he told Oprah Winfrey in a new clip released on Monday of their interview.

“In spite of three years of asking for help and visualising how this might end, it was, I don’t know.

“It’s really hard because I am part of the system with them, but I guess my brother can’t leave that system, but I have,’’ he said.

He added that he was not sure if Prince William, who is the second in line to the throne, wants to leave the system of the royal family, and described the situation as a toxic environment due to the relationship, control, and fear with the British tabloid press.

  • ‘Peter Okoye did more than Harry to protect his wife’-Nigerians liken Prince Harry, Peter Okoye’s marriages

‘Peter Okoye did more than Harry to protect his wife’-Nigerians liken Prince Harry, Peter Okoye’s marriages

Nigerians on social media have compared the situation Prince Harry and Meghan Markle encountered in the royal family with the marriage between Peter Okoye and his wife, Lola.

In a no-holds-barred interview with talkshow host, Oprah Winfrey, Markle said that she faced aggression from royals while she lived in the palace due to her race.

This made her husband, Prince Harry, to take sides with her and they decided to step down from royal duties and moved to America.

Twitter users have taken to the platform to reexamine the case of popular singer, Peter Okoye, fondly called Mr P ― one half of the defunct singing group, P Square.

There are speculations that the music group, which consisted of twin brothers, Peter and Paul, began having issues after Mr P decided to marry Lola. It was also alleged that their mother was not in support of the marriage before her death, but the singer went ahead to fulfil his wishes.

Nigerians took to Twitter to compare both situations

A Nigerian entertainment writer, Joey Akan, noted that Peter Okoye did more to protect his wife than Prince Harry. He tweeted, “Peter Okoye (Mr P) did more than Harry to protect his wife. Fought his family and left them; quarrelled with his twin, scattered Psquare ― a legacy world-beating successful music group ― for his wife. But he was still villainized here by men and women. Is he not a Nigerian man?”

Another Twitter user, @Letter_to_Jack, in several tweets, queried why Peter Okoye was not praised the way everyone was hailing Prince Harry.

A Twitter user, @uncle_ajala, wrote, “When Peter Okoye ( P Square) stood with his wife against his family’s wish, moral lessons, praise & worship were not flying up and down. Now that Prince Harry is standing with Meghan against the royal family, see praise & worship of Harry & dragging of Nigerian men up and down.”

He wrote, “Peter Okoye was not celebrated this way for standing with his wife against his family. Why?? I mean the story kinda looks similar in a way.
