Photos: Ex-lawmaker, Farouk Lawal being led to prison after bagging seven-year jail term

It was an unexpected end for Farouk Lawan on Tuesday when he appeared before Justice Angela Otaluka of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

Lawan, a former chairman of the House of Representatives ad-hoc committee on fuel subsidy, was accused of soliciting a $3 million bribe from Femi Otedola while probing the multi-billion naira fuel subsidy fraud in 2012.

The bribe was to remove Otedola’s then company Zenon Petroleum and Gas Limited from the list of oil companies allegedly involved in the scam.

Although the former lawmaker had been walking freely while awaiting the court to determine his fate in the bribery charges filed against him, he is expected to spend the night in jail after he was found guilty of the counts.

In the first count, he was said to have corruptly asked Otedola for a bribe of $3 million as an inducement to remove the name of his company from the report of the House of Representatives Ad-Hoc Committee on Monitoring of fuel subsidy regime.

Count two also stated that Lawn collected the sum of $500,000 as a bribe to exonerate Zelon Petroleum and Gas from the fuel subsidy probe report.

Following a long journey to justice for Lawan who has been standing trial since 2013, Justice Otaluka finally sentenced him to seven years in prison.

He was found guilty of counts one, two, and three which bothered on corruptly asking for bribe and obtaining same from Otedola.

The presiding judge stated that the evidence listed and submitted before the court by the prosecution counsel remained unshaken during cross-examination.

She added that the conduct, responses, and submissions of the defendant and witnesses established the charge in the first count, while the defendant demanded a balance after receiving the first and second tranche of the payment.

Police kill two masterminds of attacks on Imo headquarters, prison

Two suspects believed to have masterminded the attacks on the Police Command Headquarters and Correctional Centre in Imo State have died of gunshot wounds.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, confirmed the death of the suspects in a statement on Tuesday.

He identified the suspects as Unchenna Elendu and Elu Osinachi of Umukusu Ocha and Umuobube Awara areas of the state.

Elkana noted that the feat was recorded on Monday following a well-coordinated operation conducted at Ocha community in Awara in Ohaji/Bema Local Government Area of Imo.

He explained that the operation was in response to the mandate given to the Commissioner of Police in Imo, Abutu Yaro, by the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, to ensure that the hoodlums who attacked the command headquarters and correctional centre were apprehended.

The command spokesman noted that the suspects were engaged in a gun battle that lasted for about two hours, saying they were fatally injured.

He added, “The two suspects were taken to hospital for medical examination. The doctor on duty confirmed Uchenna dead on arrival while Osinachi Elu who was in coma, was subsequently confirmed dead.”

According to him, the police recovered an Ak-47 rifle with breach number 11654 and a cache of live ammunition from the suspects.

Also recovered were a number of expanded ammunition, matchets, and charms tied around the waists of the suspects.

Elkana assured the residents of the state that the operation would be sustained until all the perpetrators of the attacks were brought to justice.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that the police command headquarters and the Owerri Custodial Centre, both in the state capital, were attacked on April 5.

Authorities of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) put the figure of inmates who fled the correctional facility after the attack at 1,844.

They, however, noted that six of the fleeing inmates voluntarily returned to the facility while 35 others refused to escape from custody.

The incident was condemned by the Federal Government and the state government, as well as various individuals and groups in the country.

  • FG orders shoot on sight for anyone who attempts jailbreak

FG orders shoot on sight for anyone who attempts jailbreak

The federal government has ordered the personnel of the Nigeria Correctional Service to shoot on sight any internal and external aggressor on Custodial Centres.

Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola gave the order at an emergency meeting with NCOs Squadron Commanders, Field Commanders and Heads of Armed Squads.

This follows the recent wave of attacks on the Custodial Centres across the country.

He also cautioned the personnel against trafficking which he said is reported as one of the means through which criminals invade the facilities having known that they could smuggle contraband into the facilities, Vanguard reports.

While he declared the centres as “red zones” which must remain inviolable at all costs, Aregbesola directed the officers to deploy maximum force rather than minimum force against aggressors.

He said; “Our Custodial Centres must be red zones. It is a quarantine centre for those who by law should not live among free men. When a person is declared unfit to relate with other humans, it is the duty of the authorities to guarantee it.

“We are with you absolutely to make our Custodial Centres inviolable. Attack on centres is no longer a happenstance. There is a pattern now and we can no longer give any excuse to allow these attacks to succeed.

I was at the Owerri centre when we were told about the circumstances surrounding that attack and the question someone asked was, where are the casualties?

“If this meeting must make any meaning at all, you will be held absolutely responsible going forward for any attack on our custodial facilities. I asked representatives of the advanced nations about how it works and they told me a custodial centre is a fortress and a sacred facility that nobody should even have the temerity to attack, not to talk of succeeding at attacking.

“So the current security challenges are just being used as a cover. A pattern is fast emerging and we must take it as such.

“Well, we must commend you for your professionalism, diligence and sacrifice in the performance of your duties. We appreciate you but the line must be drawn where you say enough is enough, where nobody can cross, to dare or to attempt to break our will.

“I am aware of your yeoman’s job in foiling attacks, particularly jailbreaks. I must commend you for your brilliance in Ikoyi, Bauchi, Ubiaja and Kano recently.

“The custodial facilities are a symbol of the authority of the Nigerian State. They are sacred and inviolable institutions. You will notice that they are usually built around military fortresses, to show how important they are. This is to deter would-be attackers from inside or outside.

“More importantly, you are armed and positioned to directly guard them and defend their integrity. Your mission is to defend the facilities at all costs. Let me repeat, defend them at all costs.

“You are empowered by the highest authority in the land to use every means necessary to defend the custodial centres against internal and external aggression.

“The weapons you carry and the instrument you have are to be lawfully deployed for maximum effect, in protecting the facilities. Anyone or group of persons that decide(s) to attack them should not live to regret it.

“You must not fail because failure means you have contributed to the insecurity in the land by allowing criminals to invade society. This begins with vigilance. You must be on the watch for any instrument or material that could aid criminals in perpetuating jailbreaks. Again, earlier this month, vigilant officers stopped one of their colleagues from smuggling a mobile phone to an inmate in Bauchi. It will be difficult, if not impossible, for inmates to break from inside without receiving assistance from officers, no matter how little.

“Never again must a successful attack happen on any of our custodial facilities, not even in our farms. Whoever attempts it must simply regret it. By the time you make it almost a life and death matter when you attempt a custodial facility, that will be the end of such an attack.

According to Aregbesola, some of the inmates who escaped from the custodial centres have been rearrested for murder.

“Some of the escaped inmates from Edo have been rearrested for murder, another crime. There was a particular case that immediately he escaped from the centre in Edo, he went straight and killed all those he said facilitated his initial arrest. Luckily he has now been arrested and faces double jeopardy, one for escape from lawful custody and two, for murder,” Aregbesola added.

“They will no longer be charged with unlawful escape but only for the initial crimes that took them to prison. So, we urge all escapees to return before they are caught on the run,” he said.

“We have yet to confirm definite figures but we’ll make them public as soon as possible “, he said.

He, however, called on residents of the state to go about their lawful businesses, as according to him, the situation is under control.

TNG reports some gunmen on Monday attacked the Imo Police Command Headquarters and the Correctional Centre with explosives and freed some inmates.

The gunmen were said to have operated with no fewer than 10 vehicles at about 2 a.m. on Monday overpowering the security guards at the police command.

A source who wanted anonymity said no fewer than 150 suspects were released from the command in the process.

It was also gathered that no fewer than 1, 500 inmates of the correctional centre were freed in the attack.

As at 9 a.m on Monday, military men and other security operatives barricaded Okigwe road where both the police command and the correctional center are situated.

A NAN reporter who was around the area at the filling of this report, observed that smoke was still coming out from the premises of the police command and the correctional centre as a result of the explosives

  • Why my conspirators sent me to prison – Orji Kalu

Why my conspirators sent me to prison – Orji Kalu

The Chief Whip of the Senate, Sen. Orji Kalu, says he is grateful to God for allowing him to go to prison and come back.

Kalu stated this in a statement released in Umuahia on Tuesday, adding that going to prison was a good experience for him.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that Kalu was sentenced to Kuje Correctional Centre for 12 years on December 5, 2019 for allegedly misappropriating about N7.1 billion, while serving as Abia governor between 1999 and 2007.

However, the Supreme Court on May 8, 2020 upturned his trial and conviction by Justice Muhammed Idris of the Federal High Court in Lagos.

The apex court had said that Idris lacked the jurisdiction to try the matter, having been elevated to the Court of Appeal.

According to the statement by his Media Aide, Peter Eze, some prominent Abia politicians, who were vexed by Kalu’s scathing criticism against the state government, accused him of still suffering from his prison experience.

But speaking at a campaign rally for Chief Mascot Kalu, his younger brother and the All Progressives Congress candidate for the March 27 Aba North/South Federal Constituency poll, Kalu reportedly thanked God for his prison experience.

The statement quoted Kalu to have said that his detractors were “little-minded to think he is ashamed of his prison experience.

“My conspirators thought I would be president in 2023, so they decided to cut my journey short at all cost.

“But you see, these people are not God. They think I am ashamed to have gone to prison.

“I am not and I don’t blame them because they don’t know my relationship with God.

“Joseph went to prison, even former President Olusegun Obasanjo went to prison.

“My going to prison is part of my life script and I am thankful God allowed it.

“They are little minds and wicked people, who have refused to do any project for their own people .

Kalu recently criticised the state government for failing to address the huge infrastructure deficit in Abia.

He said the ongoing road repairs in Aba were funded by the Niger Delta Development Commission and Federal Government and not Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu’s administration.

He further criticised the administration for failing to regularly pay workers’ salaries as and when due.

However, the Commissioner for Information, Chief John Okiyi, said the state government secured N27.4 billion World Bank facility to fund road projects in Aba.

Okiyi refuted the allegation that the projects were being executed by the federal government, saying that federal government does not build internal roads in states.

Court sentences ‘yahoo boy’ to 1 year imprisonment

A Kaduna State High Court on Wednesday, sentenced Francis Emmanuel, an internet fraudster to one year imprisonment for defrauding a trader of N300,000.

Delivering judgment, Justice M.T.M Aliyu, also ordered the convict to pay restitution of N300,000 to the nominal complainant, Julius David.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Kaduna Zonal Office, charged Emmanuel with fraud.

Justice Aliyu gave the convict an option to pay a fine of N100,000, after he pleaded guilty and begged for leniency.

Earlier the EFCC counsel, Onyeka Ekweozor told the court that the convict allegedly convinced David through a social media account, to invest in an online business plan with a promise of 100 per cent returns on the investment within 24 hours.

Ekweozor said, following the chat, David transferred N200, 000 and N100,000 in two different accounts owned by the convict.

The anti graft counsel, said that after the money was transferred, the convict blocked the complainant and all effers made to recover the money failed.

The offence, he said, is punishable under the provisions of Section 309 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 2017.

The defence counsel K. J. Garba, appealed for mercy, saying the convict was a first time offender who has promised not indulge in such acts again.

  • TRENDING VIDEO: Over 600 Nigerians bound for deportation languish in Saudi prison, beg for help

TRENDING VIDEO: Over 600 Nigerians bound for deportation languish in Saudi prison, beg for help

A viral video of some Nigerians stranded in Saudi Arabia for more than seven months on Friday surfaced on social media.

“We are here more than three months, six months, seven months ago, without any action, no better information on transport to Nigeria,” the male narrator in the video said.

“According to the rules and regulations of this location, we are not supposed to be here for more than two weeks.

“Most nationals of other countries have been flown back to their countries. Only we Nigerians don’t have any source or way of getting back.

“I’m here on behalf of others to seek your assistance to get us back to our country.”

Chairman of the Nigerians In Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa in an apparent reaction to the video on Friday said “Nigerian irregular migrants in Saudi Arabia are due to be evacuated on the 28th and 29th of January, pending any unforeseen issues.”

The evacuation is expected to be carried out in two batches of 400 and 200 by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the NIDCOM chief said.

Ms Dabiri-Erewa’s tweet appeared to confirm the scenes in the viral video, which showed bodies – wrapped in black polythene bags – lying on the floor in a packed room.

A Twitter user with the handle @KsaApc said some of the affected persons were not able to renew their residencies in the Muslim country.

“I spoke with one of the brothers and he told me that his brother was among the detainees,” the tweet said. “Part of them have ended their stays and do not have the ability to renew and the other does not have regular residencies.”

In her Friday tweet, Ms Abike Dabiri said “their evacuation was delayed due to issues relating to Covid-19.

“We appeal to Nigerians to resist traveling abroad without proper documents. It’s become very dangerous and more difficult”

NIDCOM has serially intervened in cases of stranded Nigerians abroad, especially during the coronavirus pandemic.

In August, the agency helped to facilitate the evacuation of 261 Nigerians stranded in China.

El-Zakzaky’s wife tests positive for COVID-19 in prison

Wife of the leader of Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), Zinat has tested positive for COVID-19, it was learnt on Thursday.

Ibrahim EL-Zakzaky and his wife, were charged for alleged conspiracy and abating culpable homicide, among other related offenses.

Ever since the duo returned from a failed medical trip in India, Kaduna State government have kept them in the state correctional facility.

EL-Zakzaky’s son, Mohammed who confirmed the condition of his mother, Zinat through a statement he personally signed and made available to reporters said: “six days ago after a routine visit to the Kaduna State prison by my parent’s doctors, my mother complained of fatigue, fever and a complete loss of the ability to smell. The doctors decided to carry out a number of standard tests in order to understand what the problem was. Among the tests that were carried out was a test for Covid-19.

“This was a routine procedure and it is important to understand that she has been denied treatment for acute medical conditions including severe arthritis of the knee for years now.

“The Covid-19 test came back positive. I imagined that due to the diligent way in which the prison management had been conducting and managing the facility, a Covid-19 outbreak would be extremely unlikely. Because we have been doing our own due diligence and taking all possible measures at all times, we imagined that they were safe from the clear and present danger of Covid-19.To the best of my knowledge the prison authorities have also been doing the same.”
