  • Killer of Serena and Venus’ sister released from prison

The gangland killer of Serena and Venus Williams’ beloved sister is back on the street after being released from prison, DailyMail.com reveals.

Former Southside Crips gang member Robert Maxfield shot registered nurse Yetunde Price in a drive-by shooting in September, 2003.

Yetunde was hit in the back of the head with an AK-47 and died instantly in Compton, California, leaving her family devastated.

Her killer is now a free man after completing his 15-year sentence early due to good behaviour.

Maxfield pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter in April 2006 after two previous trials that ended in hung juries.

At his sentencing at Compton Superior Court, Serena said, “I wasn’t going to speak because it’s too hard for me to talk.”

But she said she wanted to let Maxfield “know that this was unfair to our family, and our family has always been positive and we always try to help people.”

Maxfield was released on parole from Deuel Vocational Institution in Tracy, California, on March 8 after getting his sentence cut for good behaviour in jail.

Meanwhile, American entrepreneur of Armenian descent Alexis Ohanian says he believes the real reason he initially got tennis star – and now his wife – Serena Williams’ attention was because she had a business question, PanARMENIAN.Net reports .

I would even argue that maybe the only reason she talked to me in the first place was because at the time, I loaded up her website and it was not great and she was already looking for a better tech strategy,” Ohanian told FOX Business.

Ohanian, who famously co-founded social media site Reddit in 2005, and then sold it 16 months later to Conde Nast, making him a multi-millionaire at the age of 23, met Serena at a café in Italy in 2015. Two years later, the couple announced they were having a baby and were married shortly after the birth of their daughter.

But while Ohanian says he has been a good resource for the 23-time Grand Slam champion “in terms of deal flows with sponsorships and investments,” she has been more of business inspiration to him than he would have ever imagined

Cristiano Ronaldo will be fined 3.2 million Euros (3.7 million dollars) and sentenced to 24 months in prison, a sentence he is unlikely to serve, after settling a tax evasion case with Spanish tax authorities, the prosecutor said on Friday.

The 33-year-old is accused of evading 5.7 million euros in taxes. He has denied the allegations.

The football star will be required to pay the 3.2-million-Euro fine plus the 5.7 million Euros in back taxes, 1 million Euros in accrued interest and 250 Euros-per-day for the 48 months covering the prison sentence.

The special court designated to try terrorism cases in Niger state has sentenced one Banzana Yusuf, a Boko Haram member, to 20 years imprisonment for “planning” the kidnap of 276 female students from Chibok, Borno state, in 2014.

The abduction sparked global attention, with celebrities, influential personalities and activists across the world demanding the release of the innocent girls.

More than 100 of the girls are yet to be released while the government secured the freedom of some.

The court also sentenced 112 Boko Haram members to various jail terms.

They were arraigned by the federal government on various counts bordering on concealment of information to security agencies, providing support to the sect and participating in acts of terrorism which resulted in the deaths of many persons.

One Adamu Mohammed, 22, was charged with the murder of six people as well as planting a bomb at a market place.

Mohammed admitted to killing six persons through the use of a short gun.

The judge said Zainab had already served her jail term since she was arrested in 2014. She was arrested with two children while on her way to join her husband in Sambisa forest.

The court heard over 100 cases between Monday and Tuesday.

  • I enjoyed preaching while in prison – Jang

Former governor of Plateau state, Jonah Jang, who was granted bail Thursday morning by the Plateau state high court in Jos on Thursday said he used his brief stay in prison to witness the Gospel of Jesus Christ to fellow inmates.

The former senator also described his detention in prison for one week on the order of the court as an act of illegality.

He said this in a statement he personally signed and released on Thursday.

Jang, who is a senator, secured freedom after the court granted him bail in the sum of N100 million.

He had been detained at the Jos prisons following his arraignment Wednesday last week for alleged stealing of N6.3 billion while he was governor.

    Read full statement below:

“For over a week, I was kept in detention by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), deprived of the inalienable right to personal freedom and association.

If the laws of our country are still potent under the current circumstances, my detention constitutes a gross abuse of the fundamental rights guaranteed me as a law-abiding citizen as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.

Where the Constitution provides for an accused person to be charged to court within one day, I was held by the EFCC for over a week in flagrant disregard to the letters and spirit of the supreme document which legitimizes the very existence of our country.

My lawyers have instituted a case at the FCT high court and I shall pursue it to its logical conclusions.

As a believer in Jesus Christ, I count it all joy to be found worthy of these trials and tribulations. I am aware of my fallibility as a mortal, but it has been a rare privilege by all standards of estimation, to be granted the opportunity to share the gospel of our Lord and Saviour to many souls I met in captivity. It was a remarkable experience to fellowship with brethren in that kind of condition.

As Governor of Plateau State in the 8 years entrusted to me, my preoccupation was the welfare, wellbeing, and security of the people. My work was dedicated to opening new frontiers and elevating our state and people to a status commensurate with the expectations of a world which has changed tremendously.

A testament of that can be easily identified in all 17 Local Government Areas of the State, and other strategic areas within the governance landscape.

The burden I carry in my heart is not of grudges against those against me, but of gratitude for those who have endured difficult conditions to stand with me through this ordeal. I am convinced beyond doubts that your labour of love shall not be in vain. May God bless you for remembering me in my hour of distress.

    Thank you.

    Signed:

    Senator (Dr.) Jonah David Jang

    Plateau North Senatorial District.”

  • I didn’t visit Jang in prison – Atiku

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has denied news making the rounds that he along other chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) visited the immediate past governor of Plateau State, Jonah Jang in prison over the weekend.

Recall that there were news reports that the ex-vice president was among dignitaries that visited Jang, who is being held in a Plateau prison.

The former governor is being prosecuted for alleged fraud by the EFCC and was ordered to be remanded in prison by the court pending his bail hearing.

In a statement by his office on Monday morning, the former Vice President denied visiting the serving Plateau senator.

Read full statement by Mr Abubakar’s office below.

It has come to our notice that there is a report in a section of the media purporting that His Excellency, Atiku Abubakar, visited former Governor of Plateau State, Jonah Jang in Jos Prison.

That report, as it relates to the former Vice President, is in its entirety false and mere fabrication.

For the avoidance of doubt, Atiku Abubakar has been in Yola, Adamawa State since Thursday for the activities of the 10th Commencement Ceremony and Presidential Inauguration of American University of Nigeria, Yola.

The Waziri Adamawa on Thursday attended the Honours Society event of the university.

On Friday, Atiku Abubakar joined the Yola Ummah at the first Juma’at prayer of this year’s Ramadan at the Yola Central Mosque and later graced the Graduation Awards Ceremony of AUN.

On Saturday, Atiku Abubakar attended the 10th graduation ceremony of AUN which was widely reported in the media.

The former Vice President arrived in Yola International Airport in the morning of Thursday, 17th May and still remains in Yola till today.

Therefore, he was not, and could not have been in Jos as being claimed in a section of the media.

  • Alleged 6.3bn fraud: Court remands ex-gov Jang in prison

The Plateau State High Court has remanded a former governor of Plateau State, Jonah Jang, in Jos prison.

The court made the decision after it denied an application by Jang’s counsel, Robert Clarks, for his bail following his arraignment by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday.

Jang, who is currently the senator representing Plateau North district, is facing a 12-count charge of diverting N6.3 billion alongside a former cashier in the office of the Secretary to the State Government, Yusuf Pam.

They were alleged to have committed the offence while Jang was governor of the state.

After pleading not guilty to the charges; their counsel, Clarks, applied for their bail.

But prosecution counsel, Rotimi Jacobs, opposed the application, saying the accused, particularly Jang, has tough credentials as a three-time governor, former Nigerian military general and serving senator, and may, therefore, intimidate prosecution witnesses if given bail.

He said granting them bail will not be in the best interest of justice.

The trial judge, Daniel Longji, thereafter ruled that the accused persons be remanded at the Jos Prisons till the next sitting of the court on Thursday, May 24.

Earlier on Wednesday, the court struck out charges filed by the Independent Corruption Practice and other related offensive Commission (ICPC) against Jang.

This was after counsel to ICPC, Adeshina Raheem, told the court that the commission was withdrawing its case to avoid duplication of charges against the former governor.

Recall that Jang has been in custody of the EFCC since Monday last week.

A Magistrate Court sitting in Yaba on Tuesday adjourned till next month the trial of a Danish man accused of killing his wife and three-year-old daughter in their Lagos home last month.

“He was brought to court this morning but no plea was taken. The prosecutors asked for an extension of his detention in Ikoyi prison pending his trial at the high court,” activist lawyer Christian Kolawole Love said.

“The request was granted as Mr. Nielsen will remain in prison until June 28,” he said.

He said the prosecution was hopeful that justice would be done in the matter.

“We are optimistic that the course of justice will be served. Nielsen is culpable in the murder of Zainab and Petra and should be brought to justice,” he said.

Court officials said the suspect had been returned to prison after the hearing.

Dozens of rights activists under the auspices of Women Arise NGO, families and friends of the victims, beseiged the court in black in T-shirts with the pictures of Zainab and her daughter.

They carried placards denouncing the growing menance of domestic violence in the country, amidst sobbings and wailings of relatives of the victims, including Zainab’s mother.

“Our campaign against domestic violence will be pursued with renewed vigour in order to stop this menace that is consuming our families,” Women Arise president Joe Okei Odumakin said outside the court.

She commended the police for their prompt investigation as well as the state justice department for establishing “a prima facie case of murder against the accused”.

The Danish man was first remanded in prison when he appeared in court on April 11 as the authorities awaited legal advice from the state director of public prosecution.

He was said to have hit his wife’s head against the wall several times, inflicting fatal injuries and later poisoned his daughter and tried to cover up the murders as a domestic accident.

The case, which has generated media attention and publicity in Nigeria, a country where domestic violence is receiving more attention.

In March, the Lagos state governor Akinwunmi Ambode led a protest against domestic violence in support of a 25-year jail term for rapists.

Recall that the Lagos State Government had also earlier affirmed that the Danish national won’t escape justice for the murder of his wife and daughter.

He was sentenced to one month in prison for each of the 12 counts. But because the sentences are to run concurrently, he would spend only one month in prison.

Nwobike, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), was convicted by the Ikeja Division of the Lagos High Court on Monday.

  • Okowa tasks NBA on reforms in Nigeria’s prison system

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta on Wednesday tasked the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) on the exigency of making Nigerian prisons a corrective and reformatory system.

The governor gave the charge at the Fifth Criminal Justice Reforms Conference organized by the NBA with the theme: “Criminal Justice Reforms in Nigeria, The Journey So Far,” holding in Asaba.

He said that the participants must objectively, dispassionately and rigorously proffer solutions that would ensure that the prison system only takes away the freedom of offenders and not their lives.

“It is exigent that we devise a template for the prison system that focuses on correction and reformation as against punishment and stigmatisation.

“Therefore, we must objectively, dispassionately and rigorously proffer solutions that will ensure the prison system only takes away the freedom of offenders not their lives.”

He said that the state had enacted the administration of Criminal Justice Law on Sept. 19, 2017, noting that the law had far reaching innovations and had been implemented in the state.

According to him, though the law is still work in progress, there are strong indications that it will go a long way to enhance speedy trials and prison decongestion.

“In addition, we have made great efforts to expand and deepen the course of justice by bringing it closer to the people by creating five new judicial divisions in the state.

“And in March 2017, we established an Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy and based on the recommendation of the council, I recently granted pardon to five inmates and commuted the death sentence of 30 others to life imprisonment.”

The governor said that the world was changing very fast and the growth of technology had altered the way the people live, interact and do businesses.

“In this year’s conference, it is gratifying to note that you have chosen to asses the progress made so far, with particular reference to the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s Administration of Criminal Justice Act, a by-product of previous conference.

“The judiciary must respond to this new paradigm by continually upgrading the skills and knowledge of its officers to meet the needs of the legal profession and ensure that the public continues to be served by competent courts of law,” he said.

In a goodwill message, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, represented by Justice Roseline Bozimo, Director, National Judicial Institute, said that the theme of the conference was apt.

He said that energy must be exerted to ensure that justice was done, adding that there were numerous challenges confronting the criminal justice system in the country.

Onnoghen advised states to designate special courts to handle criminal cases, adding that efforts were on to ensure the reform of the processes of filing cases in the courts.

The CJN said that by July 16, all court processes would be filed electronically as against the manual system operated in the past.

Onnoghen, however, noted that lack of financial autonomy of states judiciary, had hindered progress in the Criminal Justice System in the country.

He called for the financial independence of the judiciary in the states, adding that it would go a long way to address the challenges in the administration of criminal justice.

He tasked that delegates to make useful contributions to the conference and come up with solutions.

Earlier, in an address of welcome, the NBA President, Mr Abubakar Mahmodu (SAN), decried the huge number of prison inmates in the country, adding that the reforms had become necessary to decongest the prisons.

He charged all stakeholders to support the reforms.

to stem the rising wave of criminality in the country, Mahmodu underscored the need for more radical reforms, adding that the spate of killings in the country had become more worrisome.

Similarly, the Chairman, NBA Criminal Justice Reform Committee, Mr Arthur Obi-Okafor, had commended Gov. Okowa for his support to the committee.

Obi-Okafor noted that the conference was important to strengthen the criminal justice system.

Senate President Bukola Saraki, the Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, among others, delivered their goodwill messages through various representatives at the conference.
