Court sentences woman to 3yrs jail for attempting to cut off husband’s pen*s

A woman who attempted to cut off her husband’s penis while he was asleep earlier this month has been sentenced to three years in prison.

The court heard how Jimmy Ngulube, from Kapiri Mposhi in Zambia, woke up at midnight on August 4 with a sharp pain in his groin.

He saw his wife Given Chilufya standing over him with a bloody knife and threatening to kill him.

Before they went to bed, Chilufya, 37, had accused her husband of cheating on her and this led to a blazing row. She had then woken up in the night and decided to take her revenge.

Jimmy, 43, called his brother who took him to the hospital where doctors managed to repair the worst of the damage.

Local police were also notified and Chilufya was taken into custody.

On August 26, last Friday in court, Kapiri Mposhi Resident Magistrate Arnold Kasongamulilo sentenced Chilufya to three years behind bars for unlawfully wounding her husband.

Chilufya begged the court for leniency, but the magistrate maintained that by attacking and wounding her husband as she did, she had shown clear intent to kill him.

He said that the House had on July inaugurated a joint committee on national security in the wake of the attack to investigate and come up with possible recommendation that would forestall a re-occurrence.

Saraba said that the committee would ascertain the roles played by security and intelligence agencies in the security breach and proffer ways to mitigate against reoccurrence.

He noted that the concerned security agencies had so many questions to answer as regards the security breach that caused the federal government great embarrassment.

According to him, this is to ascertain the circumstances under which it was carried out in a bid to address all our national security challenges.

He urged the intelligence community and security agencies to provide useful information for the success of the national assignment.

TNG reports Ekweremadu has denied any wrongdoing. Martin Hicks, QC, defending the Senator, has said: “We deny that there was any exploitation or any intent to do so. The argument will be factual denial”.

Senator Ekweremadu, Mrs Ekweremadu and Obeta are facing trial for plotting to traffic a man to the UK and harvest his organs.

Prosecutors claim they planned to have his kidney removed at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, north west London, so it could be given to their daughter who suffers from kidney failure.

  • Court returns ex-Accountant General, Ahmed Idris to Kuje prison

Court returns ex-Accountant General, Ahmed Idris to Kuje prison

Justice Jadesola Adeyemi-Ajayi of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court sitting at Maitama, today, ordered that the former Accountant-General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris be returned to Kuje prison till July 28.

The Judge ordered his return to prison pending the delivery of a ruling on whether to admit him and his co-accused persons to bail or not.

Following their arraignment by the anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on July 22, the former Accountant General applied that he be admitted to bail by the court to enable him prepare his defence in the 14-count criminal charges brought against him by the Federal Government.

At the Wednesday proceedings, Justice Adeyemi-Ajayi Ajayi after listening to arguments from both prosecution and defence Counsel announced that she will make her decision known on July 28.

The former Accountant General, alongside Godfrey Olusegun Akindele, Mohammed Kudu Usman and Gezawa Commodity Market and Exchange Limited were arraigned by EFCC on July 22 on a 14-count charge of stealing and criminal breach of trust to the tune of N109, 485,572,691.9

At the resumed hearing on Wednesday, counsel to the first defendant, Chief Chris Uche SAN, moved his client’s bail application praying for the order of the court to admit the former Accountant General to bail.

He argued that the charges are bailable offences adding that they are not capital offences.

He told the court that his client never abused any court process and has the necessary surety to stand for him, urging the court to grant him bail on liberal terms.

Also, counsel to the second defendant Peter Abalaka prayed the court to grant his client bail pending the trial of the charges.

He said the counter affidavit of the prosecution dwelled on sentiments and prejudices which do not have a place in the trial, urging the court to consider the bail application adding that his client is obedient and will not disobey court orders.

The counsel to the third defendant Mohammed Ndayako argued that the entire offence is bailable and urged the court to do the needful and grant his client bail.

In his arguments, the prosecution counsel Rotimi Jacobs SAN told the court that, the former Accountant General and others have committed a criminal breach of trust which is a serious offence that should not be granted bail.

He told the court to consider the nature, gravity and weight of the charges as they are sufficient enough to be refused bail.

He argued that the charge is a public offence which is equal to terrorism and genocide and should be handled with all seriousness adding that he is ready for the commencement of the trial.

  • Kuje jailbreak: Senate directs NCS to install CCTV in all correctional centers

Kuje jailbreak: Senate directs NCS to install CCTV in all correctional centers

The Senate has directed the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) to make provision for Close Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras in all correctional centers in its 2023 budget to tackle reoccurring attacks in the country.

Senate President Ahmad Lawan said this on Thursday after an assessment visit to the Medium Security Custodial Centre Kuje, following Tuesday’s attack that led to the escape of about 800 inmates.

Lawan expressed shock over none functional CCTV at the facility and described the attack as disappointing and a sign of failure of the security system.

“An attack on the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre, can only have been possible with the collaboration of insiders within the nation’s correctional system.

“The attack on this correctional facility is symptomatic of the failure of security architecture. The attack is only a culmination of the failure.

“We were told that an estimated 300 suspected terrorists attacked this facility. They came on foot and I believe they should have been detected.

“In the first place, 300 people will not come for an operation like this without planning. Planning must have taken a week, a month or a bit more.

“I believe that our security agencies should have picked this from their tracking systems in the FCT,” Lawan said.

He added: “Secondly, having gone round the facility itself, we are disappointed that this facility does not have CCTV cameras, something that would record and give you details of what is happening and sometimes record the events.

“This is a medium-security custodial center, how on earth in the FCT facility of this magnitude we don’t have CCTV? It means we can say that all other medium security centers across the country do not have CCTV.

“We have asked the Comptroller General of Correctional Service to ensure that the request for CCTV at the maximum and medium custodial centres of the country are included in their 2023 budget because this is essential and indispensable.

“Now, as this facility lacks a functional CCTV, there’s no record of what happened, except narration. But if we had CCTV, at least the records would have been there and analysis made, and arrest will be based on the information from the CCTV.”

Lawan tasked the security agencies to ensure that the inmates who escaped from the center were brought back.

Speaking earlier, the Commanding Officer of the Nigerian Army Battalion in Gwagwalada, Lt.Col. Adisa, told the Senate leadership that over 300 suspected insurgents attacked on the facility on Tuesday.

“Only a total of 50 security personnel were on ground when they came armed with Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and other weapons,” he said.

  • Suspended DCP Abba Kyari out, other inmates missing after Kuje prison bombing

Suspended DCP Abba Kyari out, other inmates missing after Kuje prison bombing

After the attack on the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre, Abuja by gunmen on Tuesday night, most of the 700 inmates at the facility have reportedly escaped.

The gunmen in commando-style attacked the correction centre with explosives and sporadic gunshots.

According to reports, other inmates, including the suspended deputy commissioner of police, Abba Kyari, who was remanded at the prison by a Federal High Court, have been removed from the facility.

Kyari is standing trial for allegedly dealing in cocaine alongside four members of his former police unit, the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Unit (IRT), and two other persons arrested at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, Enugu State, in January this year.

Residents close to the area said the heavy gunshots started at about 10 pm and lasted close to an hour. They said it was not clear who the gunmen are but believed to be some criminal elements.

Details about the casualties suffered in the attack were still sketchy at the time of filing this report, but one of the qouted Sahara Reporters ‘inside sources’ said many inmates were able to escape.

“The place was completely ruined and all the inmates have left the facility for now, including Abba Kyari,” a source reportedly said.

“Most of the inmates have escaped from the facility; it is sad. It houses over 700 inmates,” another source said.

Earlier, while the attack was going on, one of our sources had said, “Can you hear the gunshot? We are under serious attack.”

Meanwhile, the Service Public Relations Officer (SPRO), Mr Abubakar Umar has confirmed the attack.

In a statement on Wednesday in Abuja, Umar confirmed that the yet-to-be-identified gunmen attacked the prison at about 10 pm.

“However, men of the Armed Squad of the NCoS and other security agencies attached to the Custodial centre have responded.

“Calm has been restored to the facility and the situation is under control. Details will be made available soon,” he said.

  • About 400 Nigerian criminals in UK prison to continue jail term in Nigeria

About 400 Nigerian offenders currently serving terms in the United Kingdom, UK, prison would be sent to Nigeria to continue their jail terms following an agreement signed by the two countries.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the new laws that came into effect this week empower the British government to deport Nigerian criminals up to a year before the end of their sentences.

The new laws are part of London’s ‘New Plan for Immigration Policy’.

Its first victims, 21 Nigerians and Ghanaians, were sent home on Thursday.

According to media reports, thirteen of the deported people are Nigerians who had no right to be in the country, and those with combined sentences of more than 64 years, for crimes such as rape and sexual offenses against children.

Britain’s Home Secretary, Witham Priti Patel, said yesterday that the new agreement with Nigeria would deter illegal migration.

    Nigeria

Irregular migrants, according to the UK authorities, include persons who entered the country without authorization, with false documents, and who have overstayed their visas.

Also categorized as illegal migrants are people who work or study on a tourist visa or non-immigrant visa waiver, enter into force or fraudulent marriages, or have their marriages terminated or annulled.

The agreement between Nigeria and Britain allows them to issue emergency travel certificates or temporary passports within five days in order to speed up removal of people with no right to be in the UK.

Patel said: “Our new landmark agreement with Nigeria will increase the deportation of dangerous foreign criminals to make our streets and country safer.

“The deal will mean that operational teams in both countries will share their expertise to take the fight to criminal people smugglers who are responsible for a wider range of criminality and put profit before people while undermining the security of our two countries.”

The deal is different to the recent one signed with Rwanda where migrants who enter the UK illegally are sent on a one-way ticket to Kigali where they can claim asylum.

The Rwanda deal, which will reportedly cost an initial £120 million, follows three years of promises by Patel to outsource asylum processing to third countries and failures to strike deals with Albania and Ghana.

  • BREAKING: Court sentences Senator Nwaoboshi to 7 years in prison

Senator representing Delta North Senatorial District, Senator Peter Nwaoboshi, has been sentenced to 7 years imprisonment.

Nwaoboshi was sentenced to jail on Friday by the Lagos Division of the Court of Appeal.

The Court also ordered that his two companies be wound up in line with the provisions of Section 22 of the Money Laundering Prohibition Act 2021.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission said the the court’s ruling was delivered in an appeal challenging the judgment of Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke of the Federal High Court which on June 18, 2021, discharged and acquitted the defendants on two counts of fraud and money laundering.

EFCC had arraigned the three defendants over the acquisition of a property named Guinea House, Marine Road, in Apapa, Lagos, for N805 million.

Part of the money paid to the vendor – N322 million transferred by Suiming Electrical Ltd on behalf of Nwaoboshi and Golden Touch Construction Project Ltd – was alleged to be part of proceeds of fraud.

Earlier in his judgment, Justice Aneke said the evidence of the prosecutor “proved that the third defendant obtained a loan of N1.2 billion from Zenith Bank for purchase of additional equipment and as provision of working capital”.

“It also proved that the loan of N1.2 billion together with interest of N24 million was properly granted to the third. Nothing else was proved by the complainant or prosecutor in this case,” the EFCC quoted the judge as saying in a statement.

The high court judge was also quoted as claiming that a fatal blow was dealt to the case of the prosecution by its failure to call officials of Sterling Bank “to testify and probably tender exhibits F and F10. Consequently, he discharged and acquitted the defendants”.

However, ruling on the EFCC’s appeal on Friday, the Court of Appeal held that the trial judge erred in dismissing the charges against the respondents.

“The court said the prosecution had proved the ingredients of the offence and consequently found the defendants guilty as charged,” EFCC said.
