    #EndSARS Anniversary: Police arrest two protesters during memorial procession at Lekki Toll Gate

    Two persons have been arrested during a car procession ongoing at the Lekki tollgate in Lagos State.

    The police arrested the two men on Wednesday morning amid the parade organised to mark the one-year anniversary of the #EndSARS protests.

    “I did not do anything,” said one of the young men before his arrest. “They beat me, they collected my phone, they took my money; the police have not learnt their lessons.”

    Shortly after they were arrested, both men were taken into a waiting truck of the Lagos State Task Force, after which the vehicle zoomed off.

    While the police are stationed at the tollgate for security purposes, officials of the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC) are maintaining a free flow of traffic.

    One of the protesters was arrested while talking to reporters who were at the tollgate to cover the procession. Before this, there was an altercation between some members of the press and the security officials.

    Friends, fans, others hold procession for Sound Sultan

    Fans of late Olanrewaju Fasasi, popularly known as Sound Sultan, including celebrities, gathered on Sunday for a procession and night of tributes to the musician who died at the age of 44.

    Sound Sultan died following a hard-fought battle with Angioimmunoblastic T-Cell Lymphoma on July 11.

    ATCL is a fast-growing, aggressive type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma with symptoms including larger than normal lymph nodes in different areas of the body, joint pains, anaemia and night sweats.

    The procession kicked off from ‘Stone Field’ on 23 Road, where the late musician played basketball and featured in music concerts.

    The procession continued through Fourth Avenue to Third Avenue then to Fifth Avenue before they converged at Federal Housing Authority Field on 23 Road for tributes.

    One of the organisers, Mr Emmanuel Davids, told NAN that the aim of the event was not only to honour Sound Sultan but to show the world hidden facets of the life he lived.

    “He was more than an entertainer; he was also the only philanthropist in the music industry who cared about everybody,” he said.

    Some celebrities told NAN that Fasasi was not only a humble and selfless man but also a mentor to many artists in the music industry.

    Nigerian singer, Dr Adewale Ayuba, popularly known as Mr Johnson told NAN that Sound Sultan did well in his career and took care of a lot of young artists.

    “He was a brother. I called him ‘Mr Humility.’

    “He has made his name to become a legend in Nigeria,” he said.

    Popular Nigerian Singer, Juwonlo Iledare, also known as Jaywon said Fasasi was both a brother and father to him.

    “Everybody who knows me in Festac Town knows I started my career with Sound Sultan.

    “He gave me a vest, without knowing me and that vest was what changed my career because everybody was talking about me back then,” he said.

    Another artist, Adewale Adepoju, popularly known as W4 said Sound Sultan played a very significant role in his career and music industry in Nigeria.

    The self-acclaimed Sound Sultan protege said, “He did virtually everything for my career.

    “It was like I was apprenticing under him. He’s part of my Genesis.”
    Nigerian singer, Juwonlo Illedare, popularly known as Jaywon, giving his tribute to Sound Sultan at the event.

    Also, Mr Seun Ayeni, Chief Executive Officer, BizzyBody described Sound Sultan as a good person with a great soul.

    Ayeni, who is also the convener of ‘Battle of the Sounds’ and ‘Amuwo Games’ said Fasasi was very supportive of other people’s cause.

    “During the last episode of Battle of the Sounds, I invited him for the grand finale; It was his birthday but he left it and came,” he said.

    Mr Richard Ekanem, popularly known as MC Prof described Sound Sultan as a man who radiated good humour, humility, integrity and dignity.

    He told NAN that during one of his comedy shows aimed at raising funds for persons who suffer chronic leg ulcer, Fasasi was the only A-list artiste who performed for free.

    “He was very selfless, stood against oppression and lived a life worthy of emulation,” he said.

    The Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) has claimed that 15 of its members were killed during the Ashura mourning procession on Tuesday in Kaduna, Bauchi, Gombe, Sokoto and others.

    It also claimed that several people sustained gunshots injury, fearing that casualty figure may rise.

    The movement said three people were killed by the police in Kaduna and 10 others injured some fatally when thousands of Muslim brothers and sisters trooped out in the early hours of Tuesday.

    Spokesman of IMN, Ibrahim Musa, said in a statement “In Bauchi, reports also have it that three people were killed during the Ashura procession when the police attacked the mourners. Likewise three other people were killed by the police in Azare, also in Bauchi state.

    “Another three people were killed by the police in Gombe, Gombe state.

    “One person was reportedly killed by the police in Illela, during the Ashura procession there and another person was killed in Goronyo all in Sokoto state.

    “In Malumfashi, Katsina state also another person was killed. In Katsina town however, several people sustained bullet wounds when the police opened fire on the mourners, not only during the mourning procession, but afterwards as the well- armed policemen attempted to forcibly make their way into the Islamic centre of the Movement.

    “These casualty figures may however rise due to the fatal gunshot wounds sustained by some of the peaceful mourners.

    “This year’s Ashura procession was held in all the state capitals of the North and Abuja.

    “It ended peacefully in Abuja, Jos, Kebbi, Minna, Lafia, Yola, Gusau, Zaria, Kano, Jalingo, Damaturu, Hadejia and Potiskum.

    “Today’s show of shame and rage by the police across the states was sequel to the tragic orders given to it by the Inspector general of police, Mohammed Adamu to brutally attack the peaceful Ashura mourners.

    “That the mourning procession ended peacefully in places not attacked by the police is sufficient evidence as to who the instigators of violence are whenever we are carrying out our legitimate religious duties.

    “We are grateful to Allah the Almighty that has granted us the courage to come out in several cities and villages across the country to commemorate the brutal killing of Ima1m Hussein (AS), the Grandson of Prophet Muhammad (S) as it is done in several cities across the globe, despite intimidation and threats by the federal government and its agents, acting on behalf of the Saudis by proxy.”

    Ban on procession applies only to IMN – Police

    The Nigeria Police Force has disclosed that the ban on procession across the country only applies to members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN).

    The Police also noted that other Muslims across the country are at liberty to carry out the annual “Ashura” procession.

    This is contained in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday by the Force Spokesman, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Frank Mba to clarify Police stance on the ban.

    The statement reads: “Following the deluge of enquiries concerning the ban on procession on the proscribed Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), it has become absolutely imperative to clarify that the ban on processions is applicable to members of the proscribed Islamic Movement in Nigeria only.

    “Against this backdrop, Muslims marking the commemoration of “Ashura” throughout the country along with other Muslims across the world are free to carry out the annual “Ashura” procession.

    “They should however do so within the confines of the law and guard against infiltration by unscrupulous elements who may want to take advantage of the event to cause disruption of public peace, order and security.”

    The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu, has also directed all Commissioners of Police and their respective supervisory Assistant Inspectors-General of Police in Commands and Zones to ensure that non-IMN Muslims are not in any way restricted from exercising their freedom of religion, worship and peaceful assembly.

    The IGP also urged members of the public to be calm and go about their lawful businesses as the Force is doing all within its capacity to ensure there is no breach of the peace, law and order anywhere in the country.

  • Plateau crisis: Ban on public procession still in force – Lalong

    The Plateau Government says the ban on public processions in the state is still in force.
    Mr Yakubu Dati, Commissioner for Information and Communication, on Monday reminded the citizens of the ban, and warned against flouting it.
    The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that protests have continued in some parts of the state as a fallout of the local government elections held on October 10.
    “Government wishes to remind citizens that the ban on public procession in all parts of the state is still in force.
    “Consequently, no persons should engage in any form of protest until further notice.
    “By this notice, members of the public are therefore advised to adhere strictly to the ban.
    “This is to prevent miscreants and unpatriotic elements from hijacking any protest to further inflict pain and hardship on innocent citizens’’, he said.
    Dati stated that an election petitions tribunal and an appeal committee for the local government elections had been set up by the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Yakubu Dakwak.
    He said that the tribunal and the appeal committee were to deal with any petition that might arise from the recently concluded polls in the 13 local government areas of the state.
