  • Police arrest three suspects with links to murder of UNIBEN Professor

The police have arrested three suspects in connection with the killing of a Professor in the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Prof. Paul Otasowie of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering.

The killing of Prof. Otasowie on Wednesday night is coming 24 hours after Edo ace musician, Osayomore Joseph, was abducted by gunmen.

Rising insecurity situation in the state has heightened fears among residents in the state as several persons have been kidnapped in the past two weeks.

Sources said late Otasowie was killed after the gunmen failed to kidnap him at his residence at Siluko Road in Oredo local government area.

Another source said Prof. Otasowie was shot dead by the armed men in front of his residence while coming down from his storey building.

The deceased was a former director of UNIBEN’s Industrial Training and Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme.

Spokesman for the university, Mr. Michael Osasuyi, who confirmed the killing said the institution was yet to get full details of the killing.

He said, “We lost him (Otasowie) Thursday. We are trying to gather the right information now (because) we are getting different versions.

“The first version said that it was an assassination (while) the second version said that it was armed robbery, that he was inside a car and they shot him.”

“For now, the university cannot ascertain what has transpired. But we are sending delegates now to the house to meet with the family.

“We commiserate with the family and it is a big blow to the university. He was one of the persons who have ensured that work is done and done well.

“The vice-chancellor, Prof. Orunmwense is saddened with this development. We just wish that this insecurity in Edo State is looked into. Just recently, (Joseph) Osayomore was kidnapped.

“The level of insecurity now is becoming something else. The vice-chancellor commiserates with the family and the school is mourning,” the spokesman added.

Edo police spokesman, DSP Moses Nkombe, said three suspects have been arrested in connection to the killing of Prof. Otasowie.

DSP Nkombe stated that the police received distressed call from neighbours in the area and when policemen got the scene, they found the Professor already dead.

Nkombe said nothing was taken from the late Otasowie.

On the abduction of Managing Director of Ogba Zoo and Nature Park Dr. Andy Ehanire and Osayomore, DSP Nkombe assured that the police would soon rescue them.

He said all efforts were being put into securing their release.

It was also learnt that security has been beefed up in the university and its vicinity to prevent any further attack.

A reliable source said: “A Professor of Geology was among the three captured by Boko Haram terrorists while on oil exploration in the Lake Chad Basin.

We are really sad in this academic community, we are feeling unsafe really: I mean the staff and students.

We are appealing to the government to do anything to negotiate the release of these staff who only set out to serve their fatherland.

Their families are distraught, we are all demoralised because it could have happened to anyone. Their children are inconsolable. We are really sad.”

A military source however said: “We are probing the incident and reviewing how the insurgents got to know about the movement of the oil exploration team.

The insurgents have changed tactics because they have been decimated and we will respond accordingly.

As mandated by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, we are all putting heads together to avert a recurrence.”

On the fate of UNIMAID, the source said: “We have beefed up security in and around the university to protect the community. We have done that successfully in the past few years, we will strengthen it.

This was why the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu” insisted that the university will not be shut. A closure will amount to conceding to the insurgents.”

Police arrest professor, 2 lecturers of Ambrose Alli University for alleged cultism

The Edo State Police Command on Tuesday confirmed the arrest of a professor and two other lecturers of the Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma for their alleged involvement in cultism.

The Commissioner of Police, Haliru Gwandu, who disclosed this to journalists in Benin on Tuesday, added that firearms were recovered from the lecturers.

Gwandu also said that among those arrested was a professor, from whom a double-barrel gun, single-barrel gun and one pump action gun were allegedly recovered.

The police commissioner said, “The professor was arrested. He was granted bail. The case is under investigation.”

According to a report by The Punch, Gwandu’s statement is coming less than a week after the command refuted reports that its operatives allegedly brutalised the Dean of the Faculty of Law of the university, Prof. Sunday Edeko.

The commissioner expressed displeasure over the high rate of cultism around the institution located in Esan West Local Government Area, which he said had claimed many lives.

He said there had been distress calls from members of the university community that cult groups were unleashing mayhem in the area.

It was a distress call from the community; the university community made a call that cult groups were killing and they killed so many.

And at the time when they (policemen) went to inspect a site, they discovered more than 14 beheaded students at that particular time,” he said.

He, however, vowed that the police would ensure that the leaders and members of cult groups in the area were arrested and charged to court.

Gwandu said, “We have a lot of issues with that particular university. There are some senior lecturers that were apprehended with firearms.

So, we are going to arrest those who are mentoring and those who are real cultists and charge them to court. There is no going back.”

  • “You had sex without condoms”- Professor slams 2face

Mixed reactions have trailed 2face ‘s purported February protest against the Federal Government. Funke Adesiyan, a Nollywood actress condemned the purported protest, Bovi also revealed that he won’t be part of the protest.

Though the likes of Davido and Burna Boy have pledged their support, some people believe the African Queen singer lacks the credibility to spearhead such a protest. One of such persons is Professor Akindele Adetoye, who took to his Facebook page to lambast the pop star.

According to him: “You are a bloody illiterate. You had sex with all manners of girls without using condoms. You impregnated them and made babies all over the place. You now want to lead protest against the government because of lack of governance! Have you governed your own personal life? Charity, they say begins at home. Nonsense!”

What do you think? Is 2face credible enough to lead such a protest?
