Angry Police inspectors lament over delayed promotion

Seven years after they were last promoted, police inspectors attached to various zones and commands across the country have expressed worry over delay in their promotion to the next rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police(ASP).

It was gathered that the Force usually sets up a departmental selection board every January to screen confirmed police inspectors due for the next promotion and by June, those found qualified get the ASP rank.

But a cross section of the affected police operatives, who spoke on condition of anonymity, lamented that they had not been invited by the board, urging the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Police Service Commission (PSC) Chairman, DIG Hashimu Agungu (retd), to look into the matter.

“We were last promoted in the year 2018 and confirmed in the year 2020. We were supposed to go for departmental selection board at various zones in January this year and the promotion list should have been released this month (June),” an officer serving at the Kogi State Police Command said.

“It appears the IGP and the police service commission have turned a deaf ear despite several complaints,” he added.

Another aggrieved inspector at Zone 7, Abuja, decried the delay and silence from the authorities, saying the situation could dampen their morale.

“We are appealing passionately to the IGP and the Police Service Commission to look into our promotion to the next rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police to boost our morale and gallantry for the job.

“I am ready seven years on inspector rank. I outght to get a new rank this month, but it is obvious that it is not going to happen because the departmental selection board has not even been constituted. If the authorities fail to act now, we may end up not promoted this year again,” the officer said.

One inspector at the police headquarters in Abuja echoed his colleagues’ fear that the list might pile up if their promotion did not come through this year.

“We got a hint that our promotion is being delayed because of the financial implication as our salary will increase. It becomes more complicated if we are not promoted this year because another set of inspectors will be due for promotion in 2026,” the source said.

Another policeman told our correspondent that he and other affected inspectors were enlisted in the Force in 2001, saying they decided to cry out for their promotion when they heard that their juniors who joined the Force in 2002 and 2003 were being promoted through the back door to the rank of ASP under the guise of special promotion.

“We are appealing to the IGP and the PSC to urgently look into our matter and promote us to the next rank. Back-door promotion of juniors demoralises those of us whose promotion is long overdue.

“We must commend the IGP and the PSC chairman for promoting deserving police officers to their next rank. We the 2018 inspectors are appealing to them to extend the promotion to us to further boost our morale,” the officer said.

The PSC spokesperson, Ikechukwu Ani, told our correspondent he was not aware of the stalled screening of the 2018 inspectors, but said one was conducted recently.

“Please I don’t have a brief on this matter but know that Departmental Selection Board (DSB) promotion interview for Inspectors held recently across the Zonal Command Headquarters. I was in Zone 3 Headquarters in Yola during the last one,” he said.

However, a source among the aggrieved inspectors explained that the DSB promotion interview Ani spoke about was a backdated exercise for inspectors enlisted in the year 2000 whose mates were promoted to ASP in 2016.

A signal dated May 5, 2025 and sighted by our correspondent further confirmed the officer’s account.

“Departmental Selection Board (DSB) 2025 directs you convene special departmental selection board for inspectors enlisted in the year 2000 who are yet to be promoted ASP. Affected inspectors…to attend board in their respective zones,” the signal read in part.

NAFDAC DG denies responsibility for limited promotion vacancies

The Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, says she is not responsible for the limited vacancies in the agency.

The Adeyeye said this in a statement by the agency’s Resident Media Consultant, Mr Olusayo Akintola on Monday in Abuja.

NAN reports that workers of the agency had began an indefinite strike on Oct. 7.

They were calling on the management to review the 2024 promotion exam for staff of the agency.

The strike action was initiated by staff unions in the agency, like the Senior Staff Association of Statutory Corporation and Government Owned Companies (SSACGOC) and the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN).

They had called for the strike on allegation that majority of the staff were not promoted as a result of the purported “vacancy slot” from the Head of Service,
even when they all qualified to be promoted.

The unions had also claimed that some statutory arrears and other benefits were not paid to some of the staff employed by the agency in 2022.

Meanwhile, the Director-General denied all the claims, saying that the agency has been following the rules on payment of arrears and estacode, and is committed to promoting the workers’ welfare.

According to her, the management is not in charge of the number of people to be promoted, we are only responsible to conduct exams.

She said that the office of the Head of Service of the Federation (HOS) is always responsible for allocating available vacancies that the government can pay for.

“It is not that there is vacancy and we are not promoting. It is what the government can pay for that they approve as vacancy every year.

“It is not different from any other agency,” she said.

On the issue of estacode/arreas raised by the striking workers, the NAFDAC boss said that there was nothing wrong with the agency’s estacode policy.

“We are not different from any other agency, the estacode will be paid when the evidence of the trip is presented. We have never owed any staff any travel allowance,” she said.

He noted that such conduct would not make the officers win the hearts and minds of the people and would deprive them of credible information from public-spirited individuals when dealing with internal security issues.

The PSC boss commended the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Olukayode Egbetokun for collaborating with the Commission to ensure that promotions permeated all departments of the Force for the first time in a very long while.

  • Promotion in Nigeria Police will be based on merit, says IGP

Promotion in Nigeria Police will be based on merit, says IGP

The Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, says promotion in the Police Force will henceforth be based on merit.

Egbetokun stated this while addressing officers and men of the Kano State Police Command on Friday.

He also said there would be no more special promotions in the Force.

Egbetokun further enjoined the personnel to shun extortion and other corrupt acts in order to enhance their public image in the ongoing fight against criminal elements in the society.

“I used to tell my officers to stop extortion, the police job is a very good job, is the best job in the world. Is a job that when you do it very well, you get prayers from people.

“It is also a job that you will do and get the opposite of prayers. So it is you the policeman that will determine what you want.

“If you want prayers, you will get enough prayers in this job. And if you want the opposite of prayers you are going to get it too. So, be mindful of that fact,” he said.

Egbetokun reminded them that God loved the police and was looking for a policeman to bless.

“Some of you will have sent away angels that God have sent to you to bless you with your wickedness.

“The moment you are engaging in corruption you are telling God that don’t worry about me I can bless myself, and God will not bother about you.

“But if you address your job with the fear of God, God will single you out for blessing.

“If you want your personal blessing then you must will it for yourself. So, if you want your personal blessing which you wish for yourself or the one from God.

“I will rather chose the blessing that will come from God,” the IGP said.

Egbetokun disclosed that the Force CID would be reorganised such that only qualified and competent officers would function in the department as well as state commands.

“Henceforth, only officers who can inspire public confidence will be given sensitive duty post, such as Commissioners of Police, Area Commanders and DPOs. If you cannot inspire public confidence you will not merit such positions.

“We want competence, we want honesty, we want integrity. That is the only way we can inspire public confidence.

“We want the support of members of the public. We cannot be calling for support when we also are not showing transparency; we’re not showing competence and we are not showing capability.

“We must show capacity. We must show integrity. We must show to the members of the public that we can be trusted. We are the lead agency in internal security. We have to demonstrate this.

“We must show commitment to professionalism. We must improve our relationship with members of the public. We must stop corruption and extortion  in our system. It doesn’t pay us.

“Those who have been engaging in extortion, I want to ask you, how has extortion improved your quality of life?” the IG-P said.

Earlier, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Hussaini Gumel, said over 150 criminals were arrested in different parts of the state .

He said that already a comprehensive security network had been worked out to ensure arrest and prosecution of criminal elements in the state.

The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Mrs Noimot Salako-Oyedele, said the action was important in order to appreciate the professionalism and enhance optimal performance in the public service.

The Public Service Day celebration has the theme “Building Trust Through Service Delivery: The Pivotal Role of the Public Service”.

Gov. Abiodun pointed out that his administration considered civil servants important partners in progress, saying their well-being and welfare were therefore sacrosanct.

He commended the harmonious working relationship which had continued to exist between the government and the entire workforce in the state.

“I, therefore, charge public servants to be dedicated and committed to the discharge of their duties, as the public service remains one of the avenues where integrity, as well as good legacy, are earned through adequate service delivery.”

Earlier, the Vice-Chairman, Association of Retired Heads of Service and Permanent Secretaries, Mr. Demola Badejo, had said the civil service in Ogun had always been in the forefront.

Badejo explained however that there was the need for public servants to continue to uphold the rules guiding their operations, in view of its important role of government’s engine room.

“I also implore the state government to continue to provide the necessary tools and welfare packages for public servants in order to enable them perform optimally.”

Speaking on the event’s theme, the Guest Lecturer, Tajudeen Aremu, urged public servants to build trust in order to win the heart of their superiors and the public.

  • NDLEA clarify claims of lopsided promotion

NDLEA clarify claims of lopsided promotion

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Wednesday has clarified claims of lopsided promotions in the agency.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Director, Media and Advocacy, of the NDLEA, Mr Femi Babafemi in Abuja.

Babafemi said that elevation of officers and men remains an ongoing exercise based on a number of factors including vacancy.

“The attention of the NDLEA has been drawn to some online reports suggesting lopsided promotion of personnel.

“The agency wishes to state that no such thing exists as elevation of officers and men remains an ongoing exercise based on a number of factors including vacancy.

“Indeed, the issues raised by the category of personnel mentioned in the reports arose in 2011, which was 10 clear years before the current leadership of retired Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa, “he said.

According tom him, however, in a determined bid to motivate the workforce, over 70 per cent of the workforce, a number of who had been stagnated on one rank for 15 to 20 years, were promoted and their ranks harmonised in 2021 soon after Marwa assumed leadership of the Agency.

“Even though more than half of the category of personnel referred to in the reports had been promoted in the recent promotion exercises,

“The ongoing expansion of the agency which creates more vacancies for officers and men to move up, no doubt provides the window for the few not yet affected to be elevated in another exercise underway for the junior ranks.

“Anyone not yet affected can rest assured that the NDLEA Chairman considers their welfare paramount and central to the successes so far achieved by his Leadership, “he said.

Babafemi said the agency would continue to pay attention to the career progression of officers and men in the interest of the overall high productivity goal set for all commands and formations of the agency, “he said.

DLEA is a federal government agency saddled with the task of eradicating drugs abuse, illicit trafficking of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substance within the country.

The headquarters of the agency is in Abuja but the agency has offices and commands in all the states of the federation.

According to its 2019 Condition of Service document, NDLEA personnel on Compass 03-06 are eligible for promotion within the minimum period of two years, while those on compass 07-14 are eligible for promotion within a minimum of three years, and so on.
