Controversy trails Magu’s promotion to AIG as Minister insists it came after his retirement

Controversy trails promotion of former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, to the rank of an Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), as Minister of Police Affairs, Maigari Dingyadi insists it came after his retirement raising likely fresh issues around the anti-graft chief fate.

Minister of Police Affairs, Maigari Dingyadi, disclosed the promotion after retirement when he featured as guest on the weekly ministerial briefing by the Presidential Communication team at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The Police Service Commission (PSC) on Monday approved promotion of the former EFCC boss just about when his retirement from the Police was due, having clocked 60 on May 5, 2022.

Magu had been investigated by a presidential panel headed by Justice Ayo Salami, which had since submitted its report in which it recommended the retirement of Magu in 2020.

When asked why he was promoted, the Minister said it was the responsibility of the PSC, which is under the Presidency, to provide the answer.

But he affirmed that Magu had already retired, noting that being retired would not preclude him from any disciplinary measures should the need arise.

  • Bournemouth seal Premier League promotion

    Bournemouth seal Premier League promotion

Bournemouth earned promotion to the Premier League with a 1-0 home win over Nottingham Forest in the second-tier Championship on Tuesday, sewing up second-place with one game to spare.

Bournemouth, together with Championship title winners Fulham, secured automatic promotion and will return to the Premier League after two years while Forest will go into the playoffs for the final spot.

Striker Kieffer Moore broke the deadlock in the 83rd minute, sidefooting powerfully home after Philip Billing found him with a clever free kick having shaped to shoot.

“We locked eyes and just saw the space. Thankfully Phil (Billing) played me the ball and the rest is history,” Moore told reporters.

Bournemouth got off to a good start, creating their first chance after a couple of minutes but Forest keeper Brice Samba denied midfielder Billing.

Forest striker Sam Surridge found space in the ninth minute after a brilliant long-range cross from defender Djed Spence but he smashed his finish against the crossbar.

Both sides created further chances in an attacking first half, which ended goalless.

After a slow start to the second period, Bournemouth got on top, but Forest held firm until Bournemouth defender Jordan Zemura won the decisive free kick on the edge of the box.

“I’ve not really slept this week. The first-half was emotional. Then we had a moment of magic from Kieffer (Moore) and we’re in the Premier League,” winger Ryan Christie told reporters.

Bournemouth will finish the season at home to eighth-placed Millwall on Saturday when Forest travel to 18th-placed Hull City.

  • FRSC clarifies alleged promotion racketeering

    FRSC clarifies alleged promotion racketeering

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has clarified a media report alleging promotion racketeering in the organisation.

The Corps Public Education Officer (CPEO), Mr Bisi Kazeem, made the clarification in a statement he issued on Saturday in Abuja.

“Having gone through the content of the publication, it has become necessary to clarify the disinformation and falsehood in the story, which regrettably mischaracterised the FRSC,“ the statement said.

Kazeem said that FRSC was guided by the principle that the purpose of promotion was for the advancement or uplifting of deserving officers who have met the necessary statutory requirements.

According to him, this is defined by a combination of extant regulatory documents such as the Public Service Rules, FRSC Conditions of Service, FRSC Scheme of Service and the FRSC Promotion Policy as approved by the Commission.

“The criteria for promotion to the next rank in FRSC is that the candidate must have satisfied the requirement of three or four years waiting period as applicable on rank.

“This provision excludes officers transiting from Assistant Corps Marshal to Deputy Corps Marshal (ACM to DCM) which is based on availability of vacancies in any of the six geo-political zones of the federation.

“It is noteworthy to realise that the corps has six DCMs only, each representing the six geo-political zones. This means that apart from ACM to DCM, others must observe a statutory waiting period.

“The officer can only be qualified for promotion after the required period is met and the officer must be free of any disciplinary case(s), ” he said.

Kazeem said that contrary to the author’s claim all promotions in the corps were based on merit, observance of Federal Character Principle and availability of vacancies as approved by the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation on a yearly basis.

“Stating the above criteria has become utterly important to register the transparent and objective nature of FRSC promotion exercise to the minds of the public, the statement said.

The spokesman explained that the five states, Rivers, Bayelsa, Nasarawa, Yobe, and Sokoto that were alleged to have been sidelined did not have a single personnel that was eligible to participate in the promotion exercise as at the time the promotion list was compiled.

“This is so because none of the senior officers from those states has completed the mandatory and statutory waiting period.

“Having said that, it is important to also state, for the sake of clarity, that the states that were alleged to have been favoured which included Imo, Edo, Enugu, Oyo and Ebonyi all have candidates.

“And they all met the necessary requirements for the promotion before they were considered for the promotion exercise,“ he said.

Kazeem said that as a media friendly organisation, the corps wishes to applaud the watchdog role of the press which had over the years entrenched transparency and accountability in Public Service.

Kazeem urged journalists to always balance their reportage by seeking appropriate clarifications.

ABBA stops promotion of new show after two die at tribute concert

Swedish pop sensation ABBA announced Wednesday that they were pausing promotion of an upcoming show for 24 hours after two died in a dramatic fall at a tribute concert.

The world-famous quartet is preparing to release a new album, “Voyage”, on Friday, 40 years after the group split up.

But on Tuesday night, an 80-year-old man fell seven storeys to his death at a concert hall in Uppsala in a presumed accident, killing another attendee.

The venue north of Swedish capital Stockholm was to host a tribute show for an audience of around 1,000 called “Thank you for the music”, honouring the works of Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, the two male members of ABBA.

“In the light of the tragic news at the tribute concert in Sweden last night, we have decided to hold off on releasing our concert trailer until tomorrow,” a post from the ABBA Voyage Twitter account said.

In addition to the release of its new album announced in early September, the Swedish cult band is currently building a venue in London that will host a show which includes digitised “avatars” of the four band members, scheduled for May 2022.

The exact form of these avatars, designed by a special effects company that worked on the Star Wars films, is still shrouded in mystery, but the band insists that they will not be mere holograms.

The “ABBAtars” will represent Agnetha Faltskog, Bjorn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad as they looked in 1979.
