Tight security as #IStandWithNigeria protesters gather at National Stadium

The police on Monday took over strategic locations in Lagos metropolis in readiness for the anti-government protest initially planned by popular musician Tuface Idibia alias 2baba.

The popular musician cancelled the protest on Sunday citing “security concerns and public safety consideration’’.

However, some groups vowed to go ahead with the protest in spite of the cancellation by its initiator.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that over 100 policemen were seen as early as 7.00 am at the National Stadium, Surulere, the planned take-off point of the protest.

The police team, led by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, came to the National Stadium, with over 15 vehicles and one Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC).

Other locations in Lagos metropolis with heavy police presence were the Gani Fawehinmi’s Freedom Square, Ojota and the National Theatre, Iganmu.

At 9.00 a.m, a group of about 100 protesters from different groups had gathered at the National Stadium awaiting the arrival of other members of the group.

Speaking with newsmen at the stadium, Owoseni said that the police presence was not to stop the protest, but to maintain law and order during the procession.

The main entrance to the stadium, which was initially locked, was opened for the public to use the facility on the orders of the police commissioner.

Yemi Adamolekun, the Executive Director, OneVoiceNigeria, told NAN at the venue that the coalition was not discouraged by the last minute cancellation of the protest by Tuface.

She said the protest was not about Tuface Idibia, but about Nigeria.

The planned protest had gained momentum with several public figures and civil society groups pledging to be part of it.

Tuface had called for nationwide protest against what he claimed as the worst economic crisis in the country which saw the costs of goods and services skyrocketing, with many families struggling to survive.

  • #IStandWithNigeria: Anti-government protest goes on, despite Tuface’s withdrawal

#IStandWithNigeria: Anti-government protest goes on, despite Tuface’s withdrawal

A civil society group, EnoughisEnough (EiE) among other concerned Nigerians on Monday still went ahead with ‘One-Voice/#IstandwithNigeria’ campaign despite the withdrawal of hip-hop star, Innocent Idibia, popularly known as Tuface, to lead the rally which had tremendously gained public acceptance.

Recall that the spokesperson of EiE, Debisi Alokolaro, made the intention of the group to continue with the protest known in a statement released yesterday.

Mr. Alokolaro said the ‘I Stand With Nigeria/One Voice Nigeria’ rally is being staged to protest the corruption and worsening standard of living under the Muhammadu Buhari administration at all levels of government.

Tuface backed out of the ‘One-Voice’ protest on Friday citing security reasons and emphasized that, the rally is not worth the blood of any Nigerian.

He noted that consultations have shown clearly that the ‘One Voice’ protest scheduled to hold in Lagos and Abuja today, is under serious threat of hijack by interests not aligned with the ideals of his group.

“The point I am making is that the intent is not worth the life of any Nigerian. It is motivated by the need to negotiate a better deal for the ordinary Nigerian. I therefore announce the cancellation of the planned protest,” said the singer, in the audio-visual message that has since gone viral on the internet.

Similarly another group, called Coalition in Defence of Nigerian Democracy and Constitution (CDNDC) also lends itsvoice to the protest, saying it was never about Tuface alone in the first place.

In a press statement issued by one Ariyo-Dare Atoye, co-convener, CDNDC, “the cancellation of #IStandWithNigeria rally is not the consensus of Nigerians, majority of fellow planners and not a true reflection of the sincere plan to organize this rally in public interest.”

He said: “Let it be known that Mr. Idibia merely keyed into an ongoing public discourse over this protest to take a lead. It was never his singular idea but the concerns of the suffering masses.

Meanwhile, the Police Assistance Committee (PAC) of Nigeria has kicked against the planned protest. In a statement signed by the Director-General of PAC, Dr. Martins John Oni, the body said the proposed protest, which had elicited much tension among the citizenry and was giving the police and other security agencies serious concern, could disrupt public peace and bring hardship on innocent Nigerians who might want to go about their normal businesses.

The organisation said what the country needed at this time was to support President Muhammadu Buhari and his government to continue in his anti-corruption drive without any distraction, and also concentrate on his economic policies being packaged to bring Nigeria out of recession, adding “ with a little patience, government will deliver the dividends of democracy to Nigerians.”

If someone wants to protest, take the lead na and others who are ready to die will follow u. So many unfair comments here about him loosing his self confidence and abt gain. Be real people please. He’s listened to his mama and doing the right thing for him and his family.”

“I can see da pains in your eyes @official2baba. We know the hijackers of the protest. It is the oppressors themselves. The clueless and wicked leaders we have in power. They are just scared of being confronted with the truth. They are blood suckers and merchants of death, hunger n poverty. But, #fellownigerians God pass them. They might have succeeded in intimidating @tubaba to back out, but our voices, tears and cries have been heard. If not by them, then by God. God bless you a million times over.”

Thousands protest in London against Trump’s refugee temporary ban

Thousands of protesters on Saturday demonstrated outside the U.S. Embassy in London against American President Donald Trump over his temporary ban on refugees and nationals from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering U.S.

The protesters held black banners with blood stains bearing slogans including: “No to Trump. No to War’’; “Trump: Special Relationship? Just Say No’’ against the ban and Trump’s foreign policy.

Trump had a week ago signed an order putting a four-month hold on entrance of refugees into the U.S. and temporarily barred travellers from Syria and six other Muslim-majority countries.

However, on Friday, a Seattle federal judge on Friday put a nationwide block on U.S. President Donald Trump’s week-old executive order that had temporarily barred refugees and nationals from seven countries from entering U.S.

The judge’s temporary restraining order represents a major setback for Trump’s action.

The White House said late Friday that it believed the ban to be “lawful and appropriate” and that the U.S. Department of Justice would file an emergency appeal.

Early Saturday morning, Trump criticised the ruling, warning of big trouble if a country could not control its borders.

However, many in Britons were angry about the measure, which they saw as discriminatory, and the time it took for Prime Minister Theresa May’s Government to criticise it.
