Protesters storm streets of Jos, demand good governance

Protesters have stormed the streets of Jos, the Plateau capital to demand good governance and an end to hardship in the country.

The protesters, clad in black attire, carried placards with various inscriptions to express their displeasure over the sufferings of Nigerians.

The inscriptions on the placards include “We want a Nigeria free from corruption and ethnicity” and “A Nigeria that creates jobs and allow entrepreneurs to succeed.”.

Others include “A Nigeria that is free of religious intolerance” and “Lawmaking is a part-time job,” among others.

One of the leaders of the protesters, Rev. Isa El-buba, who addressed the protesters after they marched from the Secretariat Junction to Old Airport Junction, said that a better Nigeria was possible.

El-buba said that the protest was imperative to secure the future of Nigerians unborn from the current sufferings.

He  said that it is a fight to retrieve the soul of the future of Nigeria and its descendants.

“It is a fight for us to get good governance in Nigeria. None of us is going to retreat because we have a responsibility to make sure that the voice of the people is the voice of God.

“When they speak, it is God speaking, and God is saying that we must end bad governance in Nigeria.

“When the right institutions are in place, there will be no hunger, the killings will stop in the land, and our armed forces will enjoy their services to the people.

“We are going to push on until we get what is meant for Nigeria because it is better to suffer today and secure the future of our country.

“We are here to make a change. We love our nation; we are people of peace, and we must enjoy peace, and our country must come out of the woods,” he said.

Elbuba told the protesters that they wanted Nigeria, where nobody would use religion or tribalism to seduce or manipulate Nigerians

According to him, they were going to mobilise more for the remaining nine days of the protest.

“I grew up in Nigeria, where we were known as Nigerians instead of our individual tribes. I grew up in Nigeria, where going to school from primary to university was taken care of by the government.

“Then, before you graduate, a job is waiting for you, and that is the kind of Nigeria we want,” he said.

Ahead of the nationwide protest scheduled to begin on August 1, police authorities are requesting demonstrators’ details.

During a briefing in Abuja on Friday, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun asked all groups planning to participate in the demonstrations to submit their details to the commissioners of police in their respective states.

He stated that the request is to ensure the protest remains peaceful. “We acknowledge the constitutional right of Nigerian citizens to peaceful assembly and protest,” said the police chief. “However, in the interest of public safety and order, we urge all groups planning to protest to provide necessary details to the Commissioner of Police in the state where the protest is intended to take place.”

He added that organizers should also outline measures to prevent hijacking by criminal elements and provide key identifiers to help isolate potential troublemakers.

Police, Protesters clash at Israeli embassy in Mexico

Police and protesters clashed outside the Israeli embassy in Mexico, with the Mexicans kicking  against the country’s military offensive in the southern Gazan city of Rafah.

Protesters concealed their identities and hurled stones at the riot police in retaliation to their crackdown against the protest by obstructing their way to the compound and tear-gassing them.

Around 200 people joined the “Urgent Action for Rafah” demonstration, about 30 of whom started to break down barriers preventing them from reaching the Israeli mission.

A clash with law enforcement ensued when a group of demonstrators attempted to dismantle the barriers obstructing their access to the diplomatic mission.

There were unverified reports of several people injured in the chaos.

It would be recalled that Mexico, on Tuesday, filed an intervention declaration in South Africa’s case accusing Israel of “genocide” at the International Court of Justice.

Similar protests were observed throughout the world following Sunday evening’s Israeli attack on a refugee camp in Rafah, considered as a safe zone, which killed at least 50 people.

However, Police officers deployed to the protest ground sprayed tear gas and threw back the stones hurled at them by protesters.

The demonstration was called in response to an Israeli strike which ignited an inferno in a displacement camp outside Rafah, killing 45 people according to Palestinian officials.

NLC protesters converge on Ikeja, march to Alausa

Members of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Lagos converged under the Ikeja bridge early on Tuesday to begin their two-day protest over the high cost of living in the country.

Traffic on the Awolowo Road leading to the under-bridge Ikeja mounted as the protesters gathered, chanting solidarity songs and displaying placards.

Recall that the National body of the NLC had on Feb. 16 declared a two-day protest over high cost of living, fixed for Feb. 27 and Feb. 28.

The protesters were seen on Tuesday in Ikeja as early as 8.00 a.m. and there was heavy police presence also seen at the Ikeja under bridge.

Speaking before the march began at 9. 15 a.m., the Lagos State Chairman, NLC, Mrs Funmi Sessi, said that the protest was against the economic hardship faced by workers and Nigerians at large.

“The price of foodstuff has gone beyond the reach of Nigerians; the price of rice has gone up and beans as well.

“The monthly salary of workers no longer takes them home, not to talk about taking care of their families.

“We are marching to the State House of Assembly to present a letter; this protest is purely organised by the NLC, with support of some affiliate bodies” she said.

She commended the security operatives led by the Commissioner of Police of Lagos State, Mr Adegoke Fayoade, who was physically present to lead the team to ensure hoodlums do not hijack the protest.

Security operatives including police, civil defence, neighbourhood watch and LASTMA were both at the front and back of the protesters.

This was to ensure they were protected, according to the commissioner of police’s promise.

Fayoade, had on Monday met with the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in the state ahead of the two-day protest.

The Command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the meeting in a statement on Monday night.

Hundeyin said that the leadership of the union was invited by the Commissioner to look into all areas about the planned protest.

“The CP has equally assured that the Police will be on ground throughout the protest to ensure their security,” he said.

Hundeyin said that the NLC Chairperson in Lagos, who led the team to the command, Mrs Funmi Sessi, assured the commissioner of a peaceful protest by her members.

He said the chairperson submitted a letter of notification on the protest to the police boss.

The image maker said that the NLC protest would take off from Ikeja Under Bridge to Alausa, the seat of Lagos State Government.

Heavily armed police operatives were seen at Gani Fawehinmi Park, Ojota and other parts of Lagos on Monday, in readiness for the planned protest.

Earlier in the day, Fayoade had also been to the NLC secretariat to address some other protesters from civil society groups who took to the streets over the cost of living, according to Hundeyin in an earlier statement.

“The Commissioner of Police, Mr Fayoade addressed the protesters before the procession took off in his presence.

“The procession was peaceful and without any untoward incident,’’ Hundeyin said, adding that Fayoade personally monitored the security operation and the protest.

He stated that the protesters neither caused traffic obstruction nor got involved in violent activities.

He explained that the procession moved from Yaba area to Maryland, stressing that the police were with the protesters all the way.

“The protesters played their part well and did not obstruct traffic,”’/ Hundeyin said.

  • Rerun: How angry voters beat INEC staff to coma for arriving late with electoral materials

Rerun: How angry voters beat INEC staff to coma for arriving late with electoral materials

Voters who trooped out to exercise their franchise have beaten an official of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to pulp for allegedly coming with pre-filled result sheets to a polling unit.

According to witnesses, in the pre-filled result, the electoral umpire allocated 443 votes to the Peoples Democratic Party candidate (PDP), 31 votes to All Progressives Congress (APC) and 15 votes to Labour Party candidates for the Igboeze North/Udenu Federal Constituency.

INEC is conducting the re-run election in the constituency following the ruling of Appeal Court which cancelled the election in some polling units over the non-inclusion of the logo of the All Progressives Congress in the Form EC8A.

However, despite INEC officials arriving late in many polling units for the elections, INEC polling officers came without results or pre-filled results especially in polling units that have a great number of voters.

At Igogoro, Ozzi Ward 2 Unit 004, the presiding officer was lucky to have left with his life after the voters discovered the already filled result sheet even before the commencement of voting.

It was learnt that the INEC presiding officer, who gave his name Mr Ronald Ugwudani from Igbo-Etiti Council area, said the pre-filled result sheet was given to him from the local government by INEC.

Trouble for Ugwundani started when the angry voters asked him to show them result sheets following the news that so many other polling units have no result sheets.

According to eyewitnesses, Ugwundani now told the voters that his SPO was coming with it.

Not convinced irate voters pounced on him and he brought out the result sheets from his bag.

“I told them that the SPO will bring it, so, they forced me to search my bag, I don’t know that the result sheet is inside my bag. I showed them the result sheet and they wanted to kill me,” the INEC Staff was overheard narrating in a video.

The state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Chukwuemeka Chukwu, had told journalists on Friday in Enugu that the commission had deployed over 700 staff and ad hoc staff as well as 700 armed security men for the re-run.

  • Update: Protesters block Adigun, factional Chairman PTD Lagos Zone, from Ejigbo depot as Osesua-led PTD gains control+Video

Update: Protesters block Adigun, factional Chairman PTD Lagos Zone, from Ejigbo depot as Osesua-led PTD gains control+Video

Protesters on Thursday barricaded the entry to NNPC depot in Lagos State, preventing the factional Chairman of Lagos Zone of Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) Branch of NUPENG, Saheed Gbolahan Adigun and his entourage from gaining access to the facility.

The protesters, who were said to be loyal to the Comrade Lucky Osesua and Comrade Dayyabu Yusuf Garga faction of PTD, said they could no longer subject themselves to the leadership of Augustine Egbon who they claimed had betrayed them and turned them to slaves in the hands of their parent body (NUPENG).

The angry PTD members also decried the manner with which armed security agents came to the facility, noting that if there was any case of accidental discharge on Thursday or pulling of the trigger by an impulsive operative, the situation could have made the depot to go up in flames.

They further alleged that Adigun’s intention was to impose a caretaker committee on them on Thursday while also refusing to conduct fresh election that would usher in fresh leadership at the unit in line with Branch’s guidelines.

They also said should he succeed, revenue generated at the depot would be siphoned with no one having the courage to ask questions.

Captured in a video clip, the protesters were shouting in Yoruba language “Ole” “Ole” (meaning thief, thief) were not deterred by the heavy presence of armed military operatives that came in with the convoy of the zonal Chairman to provide cover for him and those who rode in the white PTD branded Toyota Hiace bus with Lagos number plate, AP542VP.

Members of PTD at the NNPC Ejigbo unit, as gathered, were unhappy with the manner in which the union was being managed by the current leadership of both PTD Lagos Zone and the National leadership of NUPENG

They were reported to have claimed that since Gbolahan attained office as Chairman of the Zone, there had been no record of transparency or accountability on all the resources being generated by the tanker drivers in the Zone.

“Our protest is going on peacefully today on Thursday. We don’t want Gbolahan and his people here in Ejigbo Depot; he has betrayed us; he should explain to us where he takes our money being generated every week to. We can’t be working here under the sun and rain, and you will be taking our money to Ibadan every week. He can’t impose caretaker committee here, we won’t allow them, we want election, we want to freely choose those who will lead us without rancour. Enough is enough.

“See them bringing soldiers with arms and ammunition to silence, intimidate, harass, victimise, and bully us.

The same thing we see at the Lagos Zone every day, we have Naval officers with ammunition manning the secretariat. How many of us can they kill? Is this the way union is run? They have lost their legitimacy; thats why they are bringing soldiers to foist their leadership on us, and that can never work.

This is not the same union that late Frank Kokori, Akinlaja, Okuogbo, Akpatason, Igwe Achese built. I wonder why EFCC, ICPC, NFIU etc hasn’t come to look at NUPENG shoddy financial records all this while.

“How on earth can you bring armed security agents to a petrol depot that houses highly inflammable products? What if there was a case of accidental discharge on Thursday or that a trigger-happy personnel pulled his trigger? The whole depot could have gone up in flames and lives and properties in the depot, and its environs could have been jeopardized.

“This is not the type of union that should be running our affairs; all they do is to loot our resources, impoverish our members and make them look like slaves and beggars, while they are building filing stations, mansions, hotels, parks and buying cars for their women and sending their children abroad to school. Comrade Lucky Osesua and Comrade Dayyabu Yusuf Garga are leaders who mean well for the union. These are the type of people we can trust in the leadership of the Union. Workers inside the tank farm have joined the protest as we speak,” Faleti Taoreed, one of the organisers, said.

“Nobody is going in and out of the facility, we cannot support leaders who can’t protect our interests. We are the foot soldiers, yet they don’t reward our hard work. They are thieves. Akporeha, Afolabi, and Otunba should leave us alone and retire from the union immediately,” he said.

The crisis rocking NUPENG has been in the news since November 2023 as the Lucky Osesua-led faction has consistently condemned the posture of its parent union, which they said had been hijacked by the General Secretary, Afolabi Olawale, who they claimed is engaged in forum shopping, blackmail, contempt of Court and using sentiments to foist on Tanker Drivers, Federal Government and other stakeholders in the oil and gas industry the leadership of Augustine Egbon, which is against the wishes of PTD members.
