Protests: Onanuga’s behaviour doesn’t show he is educated – Babachir Lawal

A former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir David Lawal, has questioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s media aide, Bayo Onanuga action towards the planned nationwide protests by some aggrieved Nigerians.

Babachir Lawal, speaking with newsmen on the issue, debunked the allegations by Onanuga, that the nationwide protest tagged #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria was being sponsored by the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi and the Obidient Movement.

He also warned the Federal Government against any attempt to arrest Obi on the alleged sponsorship of the planned nationwide protests.

Lawal said: “Bola Tinubu should not use a forceful approach with the protesters. They mean well for the country. If they go out to protest and there is an attempt to forcefully stop them, that will be the catalyst for chaos.”

“Tinubu should remove Bayo Onanuga from his position because he doesn’t mean well for his government. His outbursts are inflaming Nigerians rather than pacifying them. When you are in government, you don’t insult the people.”

“I don’t know if Onanuga was the spokesman of the Motor Park Touts Association before he got his current appointment. They said he is educated, but it doesn’t show in his behavior. He has an in-built disdain for people, and it shows in the way he talks.”

“I don’t expect a presidential spokesman to come out and say the planned protest is being organized by Peter Obi. If Obi had the character that Onanuga is ascribing to him, this government would have been down a long time ago.”

“How can you say Obi has anything to do with the protest? Even to complain, Obi will not let you accompany him.”

“It is one of the reasons why some of us just kept away from him. When you insult him, he will not reply. He will just go about doing his own business.”

“Let them arrest him if that is their plan and see the consequences. I know that is what Onanuga is working towards. Anyone asking Tinubu to arrest Peter Obi doesn’t mean well for him. It is like they took cyanide with their own hands and swallowed it.”

“I really don’t know what Onanuga’s problem with Igbos is. Igbos are good people. They are our classmates from primary, secondary schools to university. They are our business partners; they are our neighbors.”

“We buy things from them. An Igbo man in my village is the one selling local gin (ogogoro). He left his village and settled down in my village. He is married and has farmlands.”

“Tinubu is a good man, but he is surrounded by sycophants like Onanuga who will not tell him the truth.”

Protests: Military envisages anarchy, reign of terror

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ), says the planned nationwide protest has the potential of degenerating into anarchy, and reign of terror based on the situational analysis by the military high command.

The Director, Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, said this while briefing newsmen on the operations of the armed forces on Thursday in Abuja.

Buba said the military had thoroughly examined several factors such as whether or not the planned protest was motivated by opposition politics, independent parties, sovereign interference or terrorist groups amongst others.

He said it was also examined to ascertain whether or not other organisations had fed on the frustrations of Nigerians to create the situation.

“However, for us in the military, the constitution is clear as to how and when the military gets involved.

“The constitution also clearly defines the roles and functions of the armed forces.

On the other hand, while citizens have a constitutional right to peaceful protest, they do not have a right to mobilise for anarchy in order to unleash terror.

“The contemporary context of the planned protest is to shadow happenings in Kenya which has so far been violent and unresolved to date.

“Given the situation, there are already indicators that, unscrupulous elements are bent on hijacking the planned protest for violent purposes,’’ he said.

Buba said that there were signs of status related violence such that persons with things as basic as a smart phone and car were targets, not leaving out those that own houses and shops.

Other targets, according to him, includes; places of worship, businesses, markets, persons of other ethnic groups and members of opposing political party among others.

“Based on the foregoing, the level of violence envisaged is best described as a state of anarchy.

“It is for this reason the armed forces will not watch and allow the nation spiral out of control to such low levels.

“Basically, the military has been exposed to wars and have witnessed situations of anarchy in countries ravaged by war, particularly during ECOMOG or during peacekeeping operations.

“It is for this reason that, troops will act dutifully to forestall such ugly occurrences from happening in our nation,’’ he added.

Buba urged the citizens to note that, both the timing and the atmosphere of hardship in the country had made the planned protest different from others in the past.

He added that it was incumbent upon all to quench the fires of violence rather than ignite them.

“It is time to let, cool heads prevail in order for government to further remedy the situation and make our nation flourish again,’’ he said.

SEDC Act: Deputy Speaker, Kalu passionately pleads with Igbo to shun agitation, protests

Barely 24 hours after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the South East Development Commission, SEDC bill into law, Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has called on his Igbo kinsmen to ignore agitation.

At a world press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, the Deputy Speaker also urged the people of the region and Nigerians entirely, to shun the proposed nationwide protest, saying, nothing could be achieved through kinetic approaches to issues of governance.

“To my fellow south easterners, I implore you not to join the planned looming anti government protest. Instead, let us view the signing of the South East Development Commission bill into law as a testament to the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration’s resolve to heal the wounds of the past, bury the rumors of the marginalization of the southeast geopolitical zone and renew the hope of the nation towards equitable economic growth and socio cultural renewal.

“This is a time for unity. This is a time for progress. This is a time for peace, not division, not unrest. Unrest and division will divide us further and will under-develope us further. But in an atmosphere of peace and unity, the progress promised by our forefathers will be achieved.

“I also implore Nigerians from all walks of life and the entirety of the country to not heed the calls for protests, but instead continue to trust in the process. Say no to protests. Say yes to the process, which involves policy formulations from government that is people centered, which the parliament have insisted on, that all policies of government must have the people at its center, believe in this process, not the protests, and we will be able to get the profit that this government has promised”, Kalu said.

The elated Deputy Speaker, called for more patience with Tinubu’s administration, while thanking the President for remembering the south east region, 54 years after the end of the civil war.

He said, “The reforms of this current administration will take time, no doubt, but it will soon start to suffice, including a reversal of inflation, stabilization of the economy and ensuing multiplier effect in a massive employment boom as a result of industrialization and the outcomes of the work organizations like the SEDC, which is the South East Development Commission, will engineer in the coming days.

“With South East Development Commission, we will leverage to improve agriculture. Entrepreneurial skills will enable industrialization of the region and our innovative mindedness will leverage the opportunities in the digital economy.

“Our creativity will birth a greater cultural and entertainment platform, such as the Igbowood. Our youth and women demography will play a major role in the energy of our development. It is time to put our huge gap deposit in the region to use for industrial parks.

“The gas in our zone will aid these industrial parts that will bring value to the nation. Most of the radicalized youths in our region who have been crying because of the seeming rumors of marginalization and alienation from the center will now have jobs to engage them productively, among others.

“It is no more time to carry arms. It is now time to take up skills that will be stimulated by the South East Development Commission. This is a foundation for peace and security in the southeast. There is no better foundation than this.

“On behalf of the great people of the Southeast geopolitical zone of Nigeria, the beating heart of the nation, the land of enterprise and entrepreneurship, let me express my deep gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for signing the Southeast Development Commission SEDC bill into law yesterday”

Speaking further, Kalu said, “This victory is a true example that a lot can be achieved quietly through lobbying, negotiation for what is good for your people. With negotiation, diplomacy and lobbying, not conflict and protest, we can achieve a lot more from this government.

“I wish to thank the Governors of the five states of the southeast and to congratulate them for their support towards this bill. It is momentous because it is happening during their tenure and their states and her citizens will be the beneficiaries of these magnanimous acts of the President who loves the southeast. Let us remember that our strength lies in our shared dreams and collective effort.

“In conclusion, let us remember that in unity, our shared dreams and visions will become a mission. And same goes for our collective efforts. Together we can build a Nigeria that offers every child a decent shot at life.

“Where the doors of opportunities remain open to all, we know we can do better. We are aware that we will. And with South East Development Commission, the long cry of our forefathers who died hoping for reconciliation, the true reconciliation, the true reintegration, the true reconstruction, the true rehabilitation will have been achieved.

“In South East Development Commission, a lot of multiple questions have been answered. Say no now to agitation. Say no now to conflict. Say no now to crisis and protest. Let us support this government”.

Recall that President Tinubu granted ascent to a Bill for an Act to establish South East Development Commission yesterday.

The Bill sponsored by Hon. Kalu, sought to establish a commission that will be charged with the responsibility to receive and manage fund from allocation of the federation account for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of roads, houses and other infrastructural damage suffered by the region as a result of the effect of the civil war after 54 years.

  • Nationwide protest against bad governance must hold- Arewa youths vow

Nationwide protest against bad governance must hold- Arewa youths vow

The Arewa Youth Ambassadors, a northern group, has vowed to continue with the planned protest scheduled to commence on August 1, aimed at expressing its dissatisfaction with President Bola Tinubu’s anti-people policies.

The group also debunked the rumours making the rounds that it had shelved the mass action saying the information was false and misleading just as it called on Nigerians to ignore it.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by the National Coordinator, Yahaya M. Abdullahi in Abuja on Saturday.

The statement read “The narrative making the rounds that the Arewa Youth Ambassadors B shelved its planned protest aimed at expressing its dissatisfaction with President Tinubu’s anti-people policies is at best false and at worst misleading.

“Let’s be categorical, there is no going back on our words, as the protest is scheduled for 1st August, 2024. Everywhere in the world, people make government, not the other way round. But why should the government brought about by the people in Nigeria be only for those in the corridors of its power?

If the President Tinubu-led government is for Nigerians as a whole, why on earth the false pretences? It’s so sad and pathetic that sufferings have become unspeakable and pervasive, while the power that is keeps on looking the other way.

We wish to make it clear that the protest becomes necessary considering the insecurity that spirals upward coupled with incessant food and fuel crisis, unemployment and high cost of living bedevilling our region in particular and the country in general.

Arewa Youth Ambassadors state beyond any doubt that the protest will happen on the slated date unless the government reverses its policies that have given rise to gruesome hunger and multidimensional poverty in the land.

“Is Nigeria not even on the brink of revolution? Perhaps if anything has failed to strike a cord for its outbreak, President Tinubu’s starvation scheme surely will. Because Nigerians would rather be killed on the streets by the security forces being paid through their taxes than be laid to death by hunger in their homes, and maybe on or in their beds. And, you know, hunger knows no bounds.

“Therefore, as a group of peaceful citizens, we are left with no option than to protest the anti-masses tendencies that President Tinubu-led government continues to introduce on daily basis.”

    Police ban protests in Benue

The Police Command in Benue on Sunday warned that it would not approve any form of protest in the state for the time being.

This is contained in a statement by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Sewuese Anene, and made available to newsmen in Makurdi.

Anene said that the command was in the know of a planned protest by a group of persons in the state.

He stated that the planned protest was a ploy to sabotage efforts of the security agencies to manage the present fragile security situation in Benue.

The police spokesperson said that any protest at this time would avail hoodlums and other criminal minded persons an opportunity to cause mayhem.

Anene appealed to the ‘intending protesters’ to refrain from such actions as the environment was not conducive for any protest.

He said, “Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) have been directed to tighten up security in their areas of responsibility and resist any efforts of protesters to encourage any breach of peace.

“Stakeholders including; traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth leaders and parents are advised to warn their children/wards to desist from any form of protest at this sensitive time.”

Anene assured the people of the state of the command’s commitment to fight crime and enjoined the people to avail useful and timely information to the police for prompt action.

Aside from the recurring crimes in the state, daredevil armed robbers on Friday attacked Otukpo Divisional Police Station and robbed five banks within the same period.

No fewer than nine persons, including a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and three other Police Officers were killed during the dastardly operation that lasted for over two hours.

Hamas calls for worldwide protests in support of Gaza on Friday

A representative of Palestinian group Hamas has called for worldwide protests on Friday.

“We call on our Palestinian people and the people of the Arab and Islamic nation to demonstrate in all cities next Friday,” the representative said during a press conference in the Lebanese capital Beirut on Wednesday.

Protests against “massacres, war crimes and genocides in Gaza” were also to continue on Sunday, he added.

Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip and is classified as a terrorist organisation by Israel, the European Union, and the United States, called for the expulsion of all Israeli ambassadors to Arab and Islamic countries.

It said Arab and Islamic countries should halt all diplomatic efforts that normalises relations with Israel.

Coordinated attacks on Israel launched by Hamas from Gaza on Oct. 7 killed about 1,400 people in Israel, the vast majority of them civilians, in what has been described as the worst catastrophe in Israeli history.

Since then, Israel has been attacking Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip with airstrikes, including Tuesday’s attack on a hospital in which about 500 people died.

Chaos erupts in Mile 2 as taskforce allegedly kills man

Sit-at-Home: Two allegedly killed in Enugu protest

Tragedy struck in Enugu state as two residents were reportedly shot dead during a protest by traders over the sealing of their shops by the Enugu State government.

The government’s action was taken in response to the stores’ alleged compliance with the illegal Monday sit-at-home order imposed by a factional leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Simon Ekpa.

About a week ago, Governor Peter Mbah, conducted a tour across various parts of the state capital to monitor compliance with the ban on the illegal sit-at-home.

During the tour, Governor Mbah visited several locations, including Spar Mall, Roban Stores at Bisalla Road, Market Square, ShopRite, Zenith Bank at Ogui Road, Celebrities, Ogbete Market, Garki Awkunanaw Market, Mayor Market, Abakpa Market, Spring of Life International Schools, and the State Secretariat, among others.

He observed some businesses were closed in compliance with the “illegal” sit-at-home order imposed by Ekpa and ordered that a total of 106 shops and two banks in the state be sealed.

The state government announced that all sealed businesses would remain closed for one week, after which it would consider whether to reopen them under certain conditions or sell them off.

In a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Chidiebere Onyia, the government clarified that the sealing action was not intended to punish businesses but rather to encourage compliance with the ‘no sit-at-home’ directive.

However, the enforcement of the sealing of businesses has sparked mixed reactions and led to deadly protests on Wednesday which reportedly claimed two lives.

Criticising the approach of the state government, a multiple business owner in Enugu, Gaius Chibueze, said: “Addressing sit at home and insecurity by sealing businesses not opening today is not a smart way to do it.

“The people have fears for the security of their lives and businesses. Address those fears and gradually allow them to get the confidence to open; based on the security they see you provide for those opening more will open”.

On the other hand, Ekpa who gave the sit-at-home order, has called on “volunteers” in Enugu to stand ready to retaliate if any protester is harmed during demonstrations.

According to the state government, businesses sealed on Monday would have an opportunity to apply for reopening after they provide current tax clearance certificates and relevant revenue documents for review and consideration.

The situation in Enugu remains tense as of the time of reporting, and the authorities have been urged to find a balance between maintaining order and respecting the rights and safety of the people.

Kwara Police Command bans protests, rallies

Police Command in Kwara has banned rallies, unlawful protests or gathering to guide against hijack by hoodlums in the state.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Spokesperson for the Command, SP Okasanmi Ajayi, in Ilorin on Wednesday.

According to the statement, the command wishes to inform the public of the ban on any form of unlawful protest, rally or gathering in Kwara State.

“This order becomes inevitable owing to an intelligence report indicating that hoodlums have perfected plans to hijack any rally or procession and use the process to cause chaos and jeopardise the current fragile peace in the country and by extension, Kwara state.

“The Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, CP Paul Odama, understands that it is constitutional for the citizens to protest peacefully.

“However, a situation where such a protest or rally could be hijacked putting the lives and property of the people and government at risk would not be acceptable.

“This is a temporary ban to evaluate and access the security situation in the state.

“It is pertinent to also advise political party leaders to warn their supporters to desist from inciting and unguided statements on social, print and electronic media capable of inflaming crisis and heating of the polity.
