2023: Sokoto PRP collapses into APC, as another Tambuwal’s Aide dumps PDP

The leadership of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) in Sokoto state led by the party’s governorship candidate, Sa’idu Gumburawa, had joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

This development is contained in a statement issued to newsmen on Saturday by Bashar Abubakar, the Special Assistant to Sen. Aliyu Wamakko (APC Sokoto- North), the APC leader in the state.

According to Abubakar, the new APC members include all the candidates of PRP, state executives and officials from the state to local governments.

“They include the three Senatorial candidates of the party, Garzali Abdullahi, Bello Holai and Shehu Ibrahim of Sokoto North, East and South Districts, respectively.

“Also involved are the 11 candidates for the House of Representatives and 30 members of the State House of Assembly,” he said.

Abubakar added that the PRP leaders and their supporters were received by the APC leaders in the state on Friday in Sokoto.

Abubakar quoted Wamakko as saying that the development was one of the greatest successes of APC ahead of the 2023 general elections in the state.

The lawmaker, while welcoming the new members described their decision to join the APC struggle as a wise choice in ensuring the emergence of the right leadership at the right time.

“I am highly delighted to receive a friend and partner in progress, Gumburawa, who is returning home to join us in our dedication to the development of Sokoto state.

“Today, I want to assure you that APC and all its members will continue to work closely with you and your supporters to enable our collective success in the 2023 general elections,” he said.

Also speaking, the Sokoto APC governorship candidate, Alhaji Ahmad Aliyu, congratulated the new members, while assuring them of equal treatment with all other party members.

“In APC, we are one family, we support and protect one another and work closely together towards achieving our goal of safeguarding our state and Nigeria at large,” he said.

Aliyu further pledged to ensure the provision of quality healthcare delivery, education, trade and investments, agriculture, civil servants’ welfare and other developmental aspects, if given the mandate to govern the state.

Earlier, Gumburawa, stated that their decision to join APC was in order to contribute their quota towards ensuring the victory of the party at the 2023 general elections.

“We considered the situation the people of the state found themselves under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led government.

“As such motivated our decision to join the APC so that the state will come back to its lost glory like during the administration of the former Gov. Aliyu Wamakko,” he said.

In a related development, the APC leader had also received Bello Yarima, the Special Adviser to Gov. Aminu Tambuwal on Sokoto Marshal Agency, a paramilitary Agency of the state.

The party also received Alhaji Umaru Chori, another PDP stakeholder from Sanyinna town of Tambuwal LGA.

2023: Court fines Kola Abiola for late filing of documents

A Federal High Court (FHC), Abuja has awarded fine against Mr Kola Abiola, the presidential candidate, People’s Redemption Party (PRP), over failure to file his court documents within time.

Justice Fadima Aminu, in a ruling, also fined the PRP over its delay in filing its counter affidavit in opposition to the aggrieved presidential aspirant’s amended originating summons.

Newsmen reports that Justice Aminu had fixed Nov. 25 for definite hearing in a suit filed by Madam Patience Ndidi Key, a female presidential aspirant in the June 5 primary election conducted by the party.

The judge, who granted the application filed by Madam Key to amend her originating summons on Nov. 18, ordered all parties to file their processes before the next adjourned date and adjourned to Friday for definite hearing.

Newsmen reports that the plaintiff, Key, had, on June 28, sued PRP, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Mr Latifu Abiola as 1st, 2nd and 3rd defendants respectively.

Key, in her earlier originating summons marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1001/2022, had challenged the emergence of Mr Abiola as the party’s presidential candidate.

She had prayed the court to nullify the poll that produced Abiola as the PRP’s presidential candidate.

She also prayed for an order setting aside the declaration of Abiola as the winner of the primaries conducted across the country.

Kola is the son of late MKO Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

Upon resumed hearing in the matter, plaintiff ‘s counsel, Magnus Ihejirika, informed that the matter was adjourned for definite hearing.

Ihejirika, however, said that the defence lawyers were yet to serve on him their counter affidavits to enable him respond appropriately.

Lawyer to the 1st defendant (PRP), Regina Audu, explained that there was network failure on Thursday at the FHC filing office when she tried to file her application.

According to her, there was no network to generate remittal for us to pay the filing fee yesterday (Thursday) for our counter affidavit.

The lawyer, who said she could only do that on Friday, prayed the court for an adjournment.
Also, Ijeoma Madu, who appeared for Mr Abiola, spoke in the same vein.

But Ihejirlrika described the defence counsel’s act as “a deliberate attempt to stall proceedings in the suit.”
The lawyer, who said that the case was filed on June 28, said “time is of essence in its determination.”

He said by provision of the constitution, the court had only 180 days to dispose of the matter, saying practically now, the court has less than a month to have the case determined

He argued that the defendants were only employing a delay tactic to stall hearing and determination of the suit.
Ihejirika, who told the court that he comes to the court from Kebbi, said if the court would be inclined to grant

the defence application, a cost should be imposed. He asked for a cost of N200, 000.

The defence counsel, who disagreed with him, prayed the court to dismiss the request.

In her ruling, Justice Aminu said an award of cost should not be a punishment but a compensation.
The judge, consequently, ordered the PRP (1st defendant) and Abiola (3rd defendant) to pay the sum of N20, 000 each to the plaintiff counsel.

She adjourned the matter until Dec 2 for definite hearing.

NUJ CRS Town Hall meeting: Guber candidates roots for local govt autonomy

    Wevole Ezin

Governorship candidates from three political parties in Cross River have said they will support local government autonomy if elected as governor come 2023 general elections.

They gave the assurance yesterday during the Cross River 2023 Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Town Hall Governorship Meeting, which was part of the activities for the media week at the Ernest Etim Bassey Press Centre in Calabar.

The governorship candidate for People’s Redemption Party (PRP) Usani Usani said any government that has the interest of the people at heart should support the local government autonomy which has lingered for over twenty years.

He wondered why local government autonomy which supposed to be the right of the people at the grassroots become a thing of debate.

“for the local government autonomy, I can tell you that for anybody who wants to run a transparent government should not hesitate to support local government autonomy. What business do you have touching local government money?, Obviously it is something you should clamour.

“whenever those bills go round the states by constitutional requirements for endorsement, you find governor’s telling their national assembly, don’t pass it and it has lingered for over 20 years, so I think local government autonomy is not something we should think about, we should , someone like me, I will promote it because I don’t seek to control another man’s economy.” PRP governorship candidate stated.

In agreement, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Bassey Otu who was represented by his running mate, Peter Odey, said twice as a member of the state House of Assembly, he had voted for local government autonomy.

Odey who is the Leader of the House, explained that it is not true that the houses of assemblies are frustrating the passage of the local government autonomy law, nothing that Cross River was one of the few states that have voted and agreed that local governments should be autonomous.

The APC governorship running mate said, “I support local government autonomy and that is why I voted for it twice. In my first tenure in the House of Assembly, I voted for it, two weeks ago, the house of Assembly voted in support of local government autonomy.

We are one of the few states in Nigeria that has voted and agreed that local governments should have autonomy because they are the closest to the people in the grassroots.

“However, it is also not true that the houses of assemblies have not supported local government autonomy. We all contributed in the last constitutional review and we all know that the President of the federal republic of Nigeria even issued an executive Order Ten, for the implementation of local government autonomy but a particular governor went to court to stop the executive order.” He stated.

Speaking on the same issue, the governorship candidate for Labour Party (LP), Ogar Osim, said though it is a constitutional affair but states can frustrate the local government election process.

Oeim opined , “Yes, it is a constitutional affair, however, government at state level do have a way of frustrating that process by also enthroning their stooge in local government and also trying to jeopardize the process of election.

I will win 2023 presidential election – Abiola boasts

Kola Abiola, presidential candidate of the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) has expressed confidence that he will win the 2023 presidential election.

Abiola, who is the first child of late Chief MKO Abiola, acclaimed winner of June 12, 1993 presidential election, said this at the launch of the party’s manifesto for 2023 in Abuja on Saturday.

Speaking at the event, Abiola said his party has no immediate plans to form an alliance with any political party for the 2023 general election while expressing optimism that the PRP would win the presidential election by a landslide.

“I can’t see any right away. You have to run the race before you start thinking of an alliance. We have a very strong grassroots network. We have been campaigning at the grassroots. We will soon begin our national campaign.

“We have a wide reach. We are in all the Local Government Areas of the country and we have 711 candidates nationwide. That is what we require to run a successful campaign. We are a national party that will make a big difference in the election,” he said.

Abiola dismissed insinuations that he was riding on his late father’s legacy.

“It is very unfortunate and ignorant of people to say that. I’m a man of my own right,” he said.

Alhaji Falalu Bello, the PRP National Chairman, described Abiola as an intellectually capable candidate.

“Our presidential candidate is physically fit and capable to contest alongside other candidates,” he said.
Bello faulted allegations that the candidates paid for various positions, saying it wasn’t true.

“We in PRP, whoever had the mandate to contest whether presidential or gubernatorial, did not spend a kobo that he gave to the party to be nominated for any position.

“In terms of principle, there is no party better than PRP; we have been tested; we had formed government in Kaduna and Kano states,” Bello said.

Mr Philip Wuhe, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue, has defected to the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP).

Wuhe said this when he spoke with newsmen in Makurdi.

He said that he left the party because it did not give him fair treatment in spite of his numerous contributions to its development.
“I wanted to contest for the state House of the election on the platform of the PDP because I was favoured by zoning.

“Unfortunately, the zoning arrangement was later manipulated in favour of someone from Mbakaange ward of Vandeikya Local Government Area (LGA).

“It is because of this that I was compelled to seek for an alternative platform to enable me to actualise my political ambition,” Wuhe said.
He expressed optimism that he would win the Tiev state house of assembly election in 2023 because he has the support of his people.

“I am a man of the people. I interact with them freely regardless of party affiliation, as such they are willing to work relentlessly for my success.

“I personally constructed classroom blocks for so many schools within my constituency, Tiev to be precise.
