UCL: PSG to face Bayern, Barcelona in opening stage [See fixtures]

UEFA Champions League (UCL) holders Paris Saint-Germain will face Bayern Munich and Barcelona in the new league phase, following Thursday’s draw, which produced several high-profile match-ups.

Real Madrid, winners of a record 15 titles, will take on Manchester City and Liverpool as the expanded league format, introduced last season, continues.

PSG are also set to play Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, Atalanta, and Bayer Leverkusen, with each club playing eight games, four at home and four away.

Real Madrid will face Manchester City for a fifth straight season and travel to Liverpool, marking a return for former Reds star Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Madrid will also host Juventus and make a long trip to Kazakhstan to face debutants Kairat Almaty, who stunned Celtic in the playoff round.

Liverpool, top of last season’s league phase, are drawn against Inter Milan, Atlético Madrid, and Eintracht Frankfurt in the new 36-team format.

Bayern Munich will face Chelsea, Arsenal, and Club Brugge in a competitive group, while Manchester City meet Borussia Dortmund, Napoli, Villarreal, and Leverkusen.

Inter Milan, last season’s runners-up, will host Liverpool and Arsenal and travel to Atlético Madrid and Borussia Dortmund.

Barcelona, La Liga champions and last year’s semi-finalists, host PSG and play away matches at Chelsea and Newcastle.

Arsenal, who reached the semi-finals last season, face Atlético Madrid, Club Brugge, and long-time rivals Bayern Munich.

The Gunners have failed to beat Bayern in their last five Champions League encounters, including two heavy defeats in 2017.

The Premier League has six representatives: Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea, Newcastle, and Europa League winners Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs will face PSG, Borussia Dortmund, and Villarreal, while Serie A champions Napoli are drawn against Chelsea, Manchester City, Frankfurt, and Benfica.

Newcastle, making their first UCL appearance in more than 20 years, have a tough draw with matches against Barcelona, PSG, Benfica, and Bayer Leverkusen.

The league phase runs from Sept. 16 to Jan. 28, featuring eight matchdays that will determine the clubs progressing to the knockout stage.

The knockout round begins in February, and the final is scheduled for May 30 at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest.

In other news, Chelsea were honoured as the first club to win all five major UEFA trophies: the Champions League, Europa League, Conference League, Super Cup, and Cup Winners’ Cup.

Former Sweden international Zlatan Ibrahimović received the UEFA President’s Award for his outstanding contributions to football.

BREAKING: PSG comes from 2-0 down to defeat Tottenham to lift 2025 UEFA Super Cup

Paris Saint-Germain floored Tottenham Hotspur on penalties to win the 2025 UEFA Super Cup.

The European champions came from 2-0 down in the closing stages of normal time and then recovered from 2-0 down in the shootout to prevail.

Spurs looked destined for glory thanks to goals either side of half-time from Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero. But they were unable to close it out as substitutes Lee Kang-in and Goncalo Ramos sent the game to penalties.

Vitinha put PSG‘s first penalty wide, but his team-mates were flawless with their other four spot kicks. Van de Ven had his penalty saved and Mathys Tel put his wide of the target.

PSG penalties scored: Goncalo Ramos, Ousmane Dembele, Lee Kang-in, Nuno Mendes; PSG penalties missed: Vitinha.

Tottenham penalties scored: Dominic Solanke, Rodrigo Bentancur, Pedro Porro; Tottenham penalties missed/saved: Van de Ven, Tel.

PSG tried to sign me, but… – Eden Hazard

Former Chelsea star Eden Hazard admits he had the chance to sign for Ligue 1 side, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) during his career.

Hazard hung up the boots last year at the age of 33 after three difficult years with Real Madrid.

Speaking to “Zack en roue libre” on Twitch, Hazard revealed: “PSG had tried, I’ve always remained on good terms with Nasser (Al Khelaifi, PSG president).

“During my last year at Lille, I went to see a PSG match, I liked Paris… but I simply didn’t want to return to Ligue 1. I had made my way at Lille, and also out of respect for the Lyonnais, I didn’t see myself playing against Lille, scoring goals against them… it wasn’t the right thing.”

As for the Domaine de Luchin , which houses both Lille’s training centre and headquarters, Hazard explained what struck him most at the age of 14: “For us, Luchin was the new trendy centre, the pitches (today there is one named after him), everything was brand new… I said: ‘Whoa!’. And the club too, it was a good Ligue 1 club, with its proximity to Belgium, which was an advantage.”

  • Palmer’s masterclass against PSG wins FIFA Club World Cup for Chelsea

Palmer’s masterclass against PSG wins FIFA Club World Cup for Chelsea

Cole Palmer produced a scintillating first-half masterclass as Chelsea demolished a flat Paris St Germain 3-0 to win a one-sided FIFA Club World Cup final at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium on Sunday.

The English attacking midfielder scored twice and provided an assist for Joao Pedro in a devastating display in the revamped tournament’s decider that left the European and French champions, who finished with 10 men, shell-shocked.

Chelsea, who won the 2021 Club World Cup in its previous format, struck first in the 22nd minute when PSG fullback Nuno Mendes gifted possession to Malo Gusto.

Gusto’s initial effort was blocked by Mendes, but he  collected the rebound and found Palmer unmarked in the middle and the midfielder made no mistake, slotting a tidy finish just inside the left post.

Palmer doubled the lead after the 30th minute cooling break with a goal of sublime quality. Latching onto a precise through ball from Levi Colwill, he cut inside before faking a pass to dummy a defender and firing into the bottom-left corner.

Palmer then turned provider, running up the channel before finding Joao Pedro, who took the ball in his stride and beat the offside trap before chipping his finish beautifully over keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

PSG’s misery was completed when Joao Neves was sent off for pulling Marc Cucurella’s hair in the 83rd minute, as PSG’s players grew in frustration as the match progressed.

The encounter turned into an ill-tempered match at the end, with players going at each other after the final whistle, but the flare-ups quickly dissipated as Chelsea’s players went to celebrate with their fans.

“It’s a great feeling. Even better because everyone doubted us before the game, we knew that. To put a fight on like we did, it’s good,” Palmer told DAZN.

“The gaffer put a great gameplan out. He knew where the space was going to be. He tried to free me up as much as possible and I just had to repay him and score some goals.”

It’s the penultimate day of the Wimbledon Championships 2025. It’s a wonderful cast on Centre Court.

Chelsea arrived in the U.S. after winning Europe’s third-tier Conference League and on the back of a domestic campaign in which they just managed a top-four Premier League finish.

Prior to the match, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca said he was expecting a “game of chess” against PSG coach Luis Enrique, but it was a quick checkmate for the Italian who gave a tactical masterclass.

Maresca’s team employed a relentless high press and emulated the tactics used by Brazilian outfit Botafogo, who had beaten PSG 1-0 in the group stage and were the only team to score against Luis Enrique’s side in the previous eight games.

Their press caused PsG all sorts of trouble and when Maresca’s side couldn’t regain possession, they sat deep, frustrating the European champions, who were unable to play their usual game.

The direct and pacey football we had become used to seeing from PSG was Chelsea’s game on Sunday, with Palmer, Gusto and Joao Pedro picking apart the PSG defence, especially on the left side.

Other than an early golden opportunity for PSG’s Desire Doue that was wasted, the first half was all Chelsea’s and, after they opened their three-goal lead, the French side could never recover.

  • Mbappe withdraws legal complaint against PSG

Mbappe withdraws legal complaint against PSG

France international Kylian Mbappe has withdrawn his legal complaint for moral harassment and attempted extortion against former club Paris Saint-Germain.

The Real Madrid star confirmed that they have dropped the complaint that related to his contract stand-off with the French side in 2023.

Mbappe was excluded from the squad and forced to train alone as he pushed for a move away from the club before ultimately staying.

He is still pressing forward with a separate appeal before France’s industrial tribunal to recover €55 million in unpaid wages, however, as per L’Equipe.

Real Madrid will face off against Mbappe’s former club on Wednesday as they seek to cement their place in the FIFA Club World Cup final.

  • We’re disappointed, sad – Inter’s coach reacts after losing UCL final to PSG

We’re disappointed, sad – Inter’s coach reacts after losing UCL final to PSG

Ligue 1 side, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), defeated Italian Serie A side, Inter Milan, on Saturday to win the 2024-2025 UEFA Champions League (UCL).

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports PSG beat Inter Milan 5-0 in what is a record in the Champions League final to be crowned kings of European football in Munich.

It would be the first time PSG has ever won the Champions League and the largest-ever goal margin in a Champions League final.

Achraf Hakimi opened the scoring, Desire Doue scored twice, and both Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Senny Mayulu also scored to hand PSG the 2024-2025 UCL trophy

Speaking after the final, Inter’s coach, Simone Inzaghi, congratulated PSG, expressed sadness and disappointment, but said he is, nevertheless, proud of his players.

“Paris deserved to win this game and the trophy. We’re disappointed, but the path to this point was great. As coach, I am proud of my players. The game, of course, wasn’t good enough on our part.

“I thanked my players for what they did this season. We didn’t win a trophy, but I am proud to be their coach. We need to learn from defeats and come out stronger.

“This hurts like the Istanbul final [in 2023]. It was a different game, of course. Paris were constantly first on the ball. We needed to do much better.

“We gave everything we had to get to this point, playing 58 games this season. We’re disappointed, sad. The players gave their all,” Inzaghi said.

PSG’s coach, Luis Enrique, who won the Champions League with Barcelona in 2015, has become only the seventh coach to win the competition with two different teams.

Other coaches who have won the UCL with two different teams are Ernst Happel, Ottmar Hitzfeld, Jupp Heynckes, Carlo Ancelotti, Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola.

Enrique also won the treble this season for the second time – with PSG’s Champions League being added to Ligue 1 and the French Cup – after he achieved the same feat with Barcelona 10 years ago.

“Inter are a great side, but we were fantastic in our pressing. Every player improved this season, and so did the team.

“We prepared very well for this game to be at that level. The team was excellent; we pressed with high intensity.

“Since day one, I said I wanted to win important trophies and Paris had never won the Champions League. We did it for the first time. It’s a great feeling to make many people happy,” Enrique said.

TNG reports PSG will now play Europa League champions, Tottenham Hotspur, in the European Super Cup final on August 13 in Udine, Italy.

  • Dominant PSG sweep aside Reims to claim third title ahead of champions League Final

Dominant PSG sweep aside Reims to claim third title ahead of champions League Final

Paris Saint-Germain produced a dominant display on Saturday, comfortably defeating Stade de Reims 3–0 in the Coupe de France final to secure their third domestic trophy of the season a timely boost before next week’s UEFA Champions League showdown.

Already crowned Ligue 1 champions and winners of the French Super Cup, PSG added a record-extending 16th French Cup to their haul with a clinical first-half performance at the Stade de France, dismantling a struggling Reims side with ease.

Manager Luis Enrique named a near full-strength lineup, opting for Russian goalkeeper Matvey Safonov over Gianluigi Donnarumma and making a late change by starting Desire Doue in place of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Despite Reims recording the game’s first shot on target — a tame long-range effort from Amadou Kone — PSG quickly seized control. Their pressure paid off in the 16th minute when Doue set up Bradley Barcola, who cut inside and rifled a low shot into the bottom corner.

Barcola struck again just three minutes later, finishing off a flowing move sparked by captain Marquinhos and delivered via a pinpoint cross from Doue.

“We started strong and finished the job early. The pace we set on both ends of the pitch made the difference,” Barcola told France 2.

Ousmane Dembélé nearly added a third, only to be denied by a sharp save from Yehvann Diouf. But moments before halftime, Barcola turned provider, delivering a perfect ball across goal for Achraf Hakimi to tap in at the far post.

PSG continued to dominate after the break, with Safonov rarely troubled. Diouf was forced into action again, thwarting Joao Neves and another close-range effort from Barcola, but no further goals came.

The win puts PSG on course for a potentially historic season finale. The Parisians now turn their focus to next Saturday’s Champions League final in Munich, where they will face Inter Milan in pursuit of their first European crown.

“We knew we had to take care of business today to set the tone for the final, and we did exactly that,” said Barcola. “Now we head to Munich with belief.”

  • PSG beat Arsenal to zoom into Champions League final

PSG beat Arsenal to zoom into Champions League final

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) will have a second chance to win the Champions League as they reached the final 3-1 on aggregate over Arsenal with a 2-1 home victory on Wednesday.

Fabián Ruiz fired the opener in the 27th minutes at the Parc des Princes.

Achraf Hakimi curled the second in the 72nd for the French champions, who three minutes earlier had failed to convert a penalty from Vitinha.

Arsenal got a lifeline from Bukayo Saka in the 76th but it was too little to late for the Gunners who had wasted a trio of top chances in the opening minutes.

In the Munich final on May 31, PSG will face three-time champions Inter Milan, who won a semi-final tie for the ages 7-6 on aggregate against Barcelona the previous day.

Qatari-owned PSG have long thirsted to win the European elite event for the first time. They reached the final in 2020, losing to Bayern Munich, while also being stopped in several semi-finals.

A treble is possible for PSG who have already clinched the Ligue 1 title and are in the Coupe de France final under coach Luis Enrique, who already has a treble from 2015 while in charge of Barca.

The success run, which saw Arsenal as their third English scalp after Liverpool and Aston Villa, comes amid a new strategic approach a year after the departure of talisman Kylian Mbappé, and previous exits of superstars Lionel Messi and Neymar.

Arsenal meanwhile failed to make the final for the second time 19 years after their debut there in 2006, when they lost against Barca.

They impressively beat title holders and record winners Real Madrid in the quarter-finals, but now see their season unravel late, having also lost the Premier League title race against Liverpool.

  • Wayne Rooney slams Arsenal fans after PSG defeat

Wayne Rooney slams Arsenal fans after PSG defeat

Wayne Rooney admitted he was ‘disappointed’ by the Arsenal fans after their 1-0 Champions League semi-final defeat to PSG on Tuesday.

Ousmane Dembele’s fourth minute goal proved more than enough to secure a crucial away win for the French side.

The two sides will meet again next week with Mikel Arteta’s side facing the mammoth task of beating the French champions on their home turf on Wednesday (March 7).

Arsenal secured a memorable 5-1 aggregate win over Real Madrid in the previous round thanks in large part to the atmosphere in their 3-0 home win.

Rooney, 39, who was on pundit duty with Amazon Prime for the game, criticised the fans for failing to recreate said atmosphere for this game.

He said: “For Arsenal, I was a bit disappointed with how they played, (I was) disappointed with the fans as well, I think the fans against Real Madrid were excellent.

“I thought tonight they were a bit subdued… almost like an anti-climax because Arsenal beat Real Madrid, that they are going to walk into the final (and) win the competition.

“The fans had to be there for them tonight. The players had to show up for them, of course, but on both sides, it wasn’t good enough tonight for Arsenal.”

  • UCL: What Arteta, Arsenal learned from loss to PSG

UCL: What Arteta, Arsenal learned from loss to PSG

Arsenal were beaten 1-0 by Paris St-Germain in the Champions League semi-final first leg at Emirates Stadium.

Mikel Arteta’s side had good chances through Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard but could not find a goal to level the match.

Here, we look at what was learned from the match.

    Arsenal miss Partey

The biggest challenge for Arteta coming into this match was how he was going to set up in the absence of suspended midfielder Thomas Partey.

The 31-year-old is a key part of the Gunners midfield and picked up a cheap yellow card in the final few minutes of the match with Real Madrid in the quarter-final which meant he missed this game.

With the injuries Arsenal have and with Mikel Merino playing as a central striker in recent weeks, Partey’s absence caused Arteta to shuffle his team around.

Merino dropped into his natural midfield position, Declan Rice moved deeper to a number six role and away from the number eight role in which he produced two player-of-the-match performances against Real Madrid. Trossard came in as striker.

PSG were dominant from the start of the match and had 75% possession in the opening 15 minutes, taking the lead in the fourth minute with an Ousmane Dembele strike.

Dembele so often drifted into the space between Arsenal’s backline and their midfield, and PSG scored the opening goal when he made that movement.

The question Arteta will be asking is – if Partey had been in the team, would he have been able to stop Dembele receiving the ball before giving PSG the lead?

Partey has been in excellent form in recent weeks and will be crucial to the Gunners next week if they are to overturn the defeat and progress to the final.

Kvaratskhelia and Timber – a key battle

Paris St-Germain’s quality would not have come as a surprise to Arsenal or Arteta.

The French side have knocked out two Premier League sides in Aston Villa and Liverpool to reach this point and beat Manchester City in the league phase of the competition.

However, when Arsenal played and beat PSG in the group stage in October they did not have Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who signed for the club in January for a reported 70m euros (£59m) plus add-ons.

Jurrien Timber has arguably been Arsenal’s player of the season because of his consistency, quality going forward and his ability to play anywhere across the backline.

But the Netherlands international had a tricky first half up against the PSG left winger.

Kvaratskhelia got the assist for the goal, driving into the box and pulling the ball back for Dembele to guide into the net from the edge of the box.

The Georgian was direct every time he recieved the ball and Bukayo Saka came back to help Timber defend as Arsenal looked to double up on him.

Timber looked more comfortable in the second half when Arsenal were able to have more possession and he was able to get forward more himself.

But, it is the first time in a long time that an attacker has caused the Arsenal defender such problems.

‘If we don’t have the ball, we die’ – Rice

Those were the words of midfielder Rice in the Arsenal pre-match huddle that were picked up by the TV cameras.

The fear that Arsenal would not have the ball played out as the hosts failed to get control in the match, with the away side dominating the ball for large parts of the first half.

Arsenal did get a foothold in the game in the second period and PSG, despite their fast start, finished the match on 52% possession.

Mikel Arteta said that it is “impossible” to control PSG for 95 minutes and that it was the “small margins” in the game that did not allow his team to pick up a positive result.

“I mean, this is one of the best, beating all the English teams, the best teams in this country,” Arteta said.

“So, you cannot dominate this team in 95 minutes. Impossible. Forget about it.

“And you have to understand what it means dominating them and in which area of the pitch.”

    ‘The margins were small’

It’s only half-time in the tie and Arteta says his side will approach the second leg the same way they did when going to Madrid with a 3-0 lead in the last round.

“We have to go to Paris and win the game,” he added. “We are more than capable of doing it.

“I saw two very good teams, but the margins are so small. They had efficiency in front of the goal. The keeper as well made a difference to see the result that we’ve seen tonight.

“I don’t know the percentage, but we have a lot of chances to be in that final. You have to do something special in the competition to have the right to be in the final. And the time to do it is going to be in Paris.”

Luis Enrique expects PSG to ‘suffer’

Donnarumma may have made two smart saves to keep Arsenal out but PSG also had chances to put the tie beyond the Gunners.

First Bradley Barcola pulled an effort wide and then Goncalo Ramos hit the crossbar late on.

And PSG boss Luis Enrique expects his side to “suffer” in Paris without that cushion.

“I think emotions are at that level in those kind of matches so it’s difficult to analyse,” he said. “Great atmosphere but we showed the kind of team we are.

“We tried to play our way and scored the goal early playing the way we play. We suffered sometimes but could have scored the second goal. The second match is going to be very tough.

“We need to prepare for the second match, it’s going to be difficult. The result means a little advantage for us. We are going to suffer, we know that. I think we can go to the final but there is still one match.”
