Ex-France international dies after 39 years in coma

Former France defender, Jean-Pierre Adams, has died at 73 after spending 39 years in a coma.

Adams, who played for Nice and Paris Saint-Germain, had been in a vegetative state since 1982, following a routine knee operation that went wrong.

During the surgery, there was a problem with the supply of anaesthetic. Also, a cushion used to prop him up, had slipped without hospital staff noticing.

Adams suffocated and suffered a cardiac arrest.

According to his wife, Bernadette, the anaesthetist failed to spot the signs that he was lacking oxygen “because of his skin colour”.

Adams, who was born in Senegal, spent the next year in a coma in hospital before he was taken home to be cared for by Bernadette.

He was able to open his eyes and digest food, but was unable to move or talk.

  • Mbappe will play for Real Madrid one day – Benzema

Mbappe will play for Real Madrid one day – Benzema

Kylian Mbappe will play for Real Madrid “one day or another”, according to his France teammate and Los Blancos striker Karim Benzema.

Media reports say La Liga giants Real Madrid offered Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) 200 million euros (237 million dollars) on deadline day.

It was a whopping sum for a player in the final year of his contract.

However, it was said that PSG failed to respond to that bid — Real Madrid’s third during the window.

It then meant Mbappe will remain in Ligue 1 to form a mouth-watering attack alongside Lionel Messi and Neymar at the Parc des Princes this term.

However, Mbappe looks certain to agree a pre-contract agreement with Real Madrid in January, with the forward having his heart set on a move to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Benzema is excited by the prospect of teaming up at club level with his Les Bleus teammate.

He has scored 135 goals in 175 games for PSG at a rate of one goal every 101.61 minutes.

Speaking in an interview, Benzema said of Mbappe: “He is a player who will play for Real Madrid one day or another.

“We get along really well, I would like him to be with me today in Real Madrid.”

Benzema was speaking in the aftermath of France’s 1-1 draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday, a 2020 FIFA World Cup qualifying match.

It was a game that saw Didier Deschamps’ side finish with 10 men after Jules Kounde was sent off.

The point keeps France top of Group D on eight points after four games, four clear of Ukraine who have drawn all of their matches in the pool so far.

“We would have liked to win this match here, in France, in front of our fans,” Benzema added.

“In the first half we made good moves, and in the second half, with the red card, we fell back a little, which is normal when we play [with] one less.”

The sons of Lionel Messi have signed up with PSG’s academy.

Messi made his debut for PSG on the weekend in victory at Reims, having left Barcelona earlier in the month.

Five-year-old Mateo and eight-year-old Thiago have also joined up with the youth section.

Messi will be hoping his youngest son, Ciro, 3, can follow in their footsteps down the line.

Mateo will turn out for the U7s, while Thiago will be with the U9s or U10s, reports L’Equipe.

  • Why I failed at Man Utd – Di Maria

Why I failed at Man Utd – Di Maria

Paris Saint-Germain star Angel di Maria has revisited his failure at Manchester United, putting the blame squarely at the door of Louis van Gaal.

United shelled out a club-record £59.7million fee to sign the winger from Real Madrid in August 2014.

My problem at Manchester was the coach. Van Gaal was the worst of my career.

Di Maria insists the No.7 shirt given to him — worn by club legends such as Eric Cantona and Bryan Robson — had no special meaning.

“I didn’t give a f*** about the Manchester United No.7,” Di Maria said on TyC Sports in a wide-ranging interview.

“At first they talked to me a lot about it… it was just a shirt.

“My problem at Manchester was the coach. Van Gaal was the worst of my career.

“I would score, assist, and the next day he would show me my misplaced passes.

“He displaced me from one day to the other, he didn’t like players being more than him.”

Di Maria played with new United signing Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid and revealed: “I invited Cristiano to my first birthday in Madrid and thought he wouldn’t show up.

“He came and drank beer with my friends like it was nothing.”

He also spoke of his former Real coach Jose Mourinho: “Mourinho is insane. With me he was always a good guy.

“He fought with anyone though, he didn’t give a f***.

“One time he fought with Ronaldo telling him he didn’t run, that everyone ran for him.”

PSG to try a third time to get Mbappe to sign

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) will attempt to get Kylian Mbappe to sign a new contract after fending off interest from Real Madrid, the Parisien newspaper reported on Wednesday.

PSG rejected a Real Madrid bid for the France striker in spite of the 22-year-old entering the final year of his contract.

To stop him leaving for free next July, PSG look set to up their offer to the World Cup winner.

The Parisien said PSG’s first offer to the forward was an extension until 2026 with an annual net salary of 26 million euros (31 million dollars).

A second offer for an extension until 2024 based on a net salary of 45 million euros per year was also turned down by Mbappe.

This is more than Neymar and newcomer Lionel Messi receive.

PSG were busy in the transfer window which closed on Tuesday, also bringing in Portuguese talent Nuno Mendes late on deadline day.

The 19-year-old left-back has been loaned for a season from Sporting Lisbon, with an option to buy.

Ligue 1: Lionel Messi makes PSG debut in 2-0 win

Lionel Messi made his Paris St-Germain debut as a 66th-minute substitute in a 2-0 win at Reims in Ligue 1.

The Argentine, wearing his new number 30 PSG shirt, received a standing ovation as he replaced his friend Neymar in front of a sell-out crowd.

It was the first club game of his career for a team other than Barcelona.

“He is still far away from his best form but he has been training well and he will be fit in the next two weeks,” boss Mauricio Pochettino told Amazon.

“We are waiting for the best from him. I’m very happy that he made his debut. It was very important for him.”

Kylian Mbappe scored both goals on what could be his final appearance for the club, with Real Madrid keen to sign him before Tuesday’s transfer deadline.

Real Madrid have made a 160m euro (£137m) bid to sign the 22-year-old, who has now scored 135 goals in 175 games for PSG.

  • PSG signing Ramos made me sad – Thiago Silva

PSG signing Ramos made me sad – Thiago Silva

Thiago Silva has admitted that Paris Saint-Germain’s decision to sign Sergio Ramos has left him “truly sad,” after he was not offered a similar deal despite the duo being close in age.

Former Real Madrid captain Ramos is one of a number of high-profile signings at Parc des Princes this summer, as the Ligue 1 side look to cement their hopes of a successful European challenge.

Yet Silva, who is entering his second year at Chelsea following his PSG exit last term, has admitted that while has no issue with Ramos, the club’s call to sign the Spain star rankles given his own long service – and sharp release – from the French side.

“I have nothing against Sergio Ramos, but Sergio, at the time at which they offered him a two-year contract, was the same age as me last year,” the 36-year-old told ESPN Brazil.

“So that made me truly sad. I have not yet spoken about it with anyone, because it made me really sad because I felt like I had done nothing for the club.

“My departure is a page that has certainly been turned, but at the same time I think a lot, I reflect a lot on everything that has happened. I think that something else could have been done.

“Because it was not eight days, or eight months that I spent with PSG. It was eight years with lots of victories, lots of work to be able to change, and put PSG at the level that it is at today.

“I want PSG to win, because the club deserves all the respect. But, in light of the way that things played out, I have this feeling of sadness and I feel that it could have been done differently.”

  • Real Madrid close in on Mbappe, secure extension with Casemiro

Real Madrid close in on Mbappe, secure extension with Casemiro

Kylian Mbappe arrived at the training ground of French clubside Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) on Friday amid the expectation Real Madrid would push to complete his signing in the coming hours.

Mbappe wore a white baseball cap and white T-shirt, and whether by accident or design that only fuelled anticipation of a blockbuster move to Los Blancos.

One deal Real Madrid did complete on Friday was with midfielder Casemiro, who has signed a new contract that will keep him at the club until June 2025.

The Brazilian’s original deal was set to expire at the conclusion of next season.

According to reports in Spain, Real Madrid have offered 170 million euros (200 million dollars) plus 10 million euros in add-ons for Mbappe.

Mbappe, 22, has entered the final year of his PSG contract and there has been no indication of a desire on his part to extend his stay.

He would be able to leave on a free transfer at the end of the current season, were he not to agree new terms.

PSG sporting director Leonardo was also pictured making his way into the training facility.

Earlier this week, Leonardo expressed dissatisfaction as the saga unfolded, with PSG having heavily invested during the close season to assemble a formidable squad.

They have brought in Lionel Messi from FC Barcelona in a staggering move, as well as acquiring the likes of Sergio Ramos, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Georginio Wijnaldum and Achraf Hakimi.

Messi could make his debut against Reims, but that factor was being overshadowed by the prospect of PSG possibly losing Mbappe.

The Frenchman is a player they hoped to build the team around for years to come.

Leonardo said on Wednesday: “We cannot be happy with this situation, because we did something this summer.

“We have created a dream, we will not let anyone destroy it or position themselves above the club.

“Kylian is at the centre of the project but not above it. We created a positive atmosphere, a desire, an emotion. That was our plan.”

Casemiro will now remain at the Santiago Bernabeu for a further two years after putting pen to paper on fresh terms.

The 29-year-old is the latest player to extend his stay in the Spanish capital after Karim Benzema and Federico Valverde also committed their future in the past week.

Casemiro has made 288 appearances for Real Madrid since arriving from Sao Paolo on an initial loan spell in January 2013, scoring 30 goals.

He has enjoyed a trophy-laden spell with the club, winning four UEFA Champions League titles, three FIFA Club World Cups and Spanish La Liga on two occasions.

The Brazil international was also part of the Selecao squad which won the 2019 Copa America.

  • PSG chief Leonardo admits Mbappe ‘wants to leave’

PSG chief Leonardo admits Mbappe ‘wants to leave’

Paris Saint-Germain sporting director Leonardo admits Kylian Mbappe wants to leave.

Leonardo’s comments arrive this morning amid reports of a €160m offer being made by Real Madrid.

Leonardo told RMC Sport: “Kylian Mbappé wants to leave, that seems clear… If he wants to leave, we will not stop him, but on our terms.”

The Brazilian then went on to declare that Madrid’s approach was “illegal, because they contacted the player” – hinting that the Spanish giants did not go through the official channels of contacting his club first.

Madrid may need to significantly increase their offer to PSG to secure the player this summer despite the fact he is out of contract next summer.

Leonardo went on to say: “We have no plans to talk to Real Madrid again. The deadline is August 31 at midnight. This is how the transfer window is, for us we are clear: we keep him and we extend. But we’re not going to let him go for less than what we paid when we still owe Monaco money.

“We made two significant offers to Kylian: one at the level of the top players in our squad two months ago and one above that of those players very recently. We want to prove to him that he is an important player, at the centre of our project, but not above the project.

“In terms of our position on Real, it seems like a strategy to try to get a no from us, to show that they have tried everything and to wait for a year to get him for free.

“For the last 2 years, Real Madrid have been behaving like this, it is not correct, illegal even because they contacted the player. It is unacceptable for us, because it is not correct.

“It is proof of the strategy: an offer comes 1 year before the end of his contract and 7 days before the end of the window. They want us to reject to show to Kylian that they tried everything and to start negotiating for next year.”
