BREAKING: Messi agrees to join PSG on two-year contract

Former Barcelona captain, Lionel Messi has agreed to join Paris Saint-Germain on a two-year contract.

Sports paper, L’Equipe, said on its website, adding he was due to arrive in Paris in the coming hours.

Messi, the 34-year-old record goal scorer for both Argentina and FC Barcelona, is one of the greatest players of all time.

The six-time Ballon d’Or winner, wept on Sunday as he bade farewell to his boyhood team, after the club said it could no longer afford to keep him, due to La Liga’s fair play rules.

The PSG frontline is already formidable, with Messi’s former Barca team mate Neymar and young France striker, Kylian Mbappe seen as two of the best players on the planet.

But the arrival of Messi, Barca’s all-time record goal scorer with 682 in 27 years, will boost the club’s ambitions to win a first ever Champions League.

The arrival of Messi, who has 245 million followers on Instagram and is Barcelona’s most decorated player of all time, is also welcome news for France’s Ligue 1.

BREAKING: Complaint filed aiming to block Messi’s PSG move

Lionel Messi’s future might not be as clear as it seems to be. A complaint has been filed with the European Commission in an attempt to prevent Paris Saint-Germain from signing the Barcelona captain.

The complaint, which MARCA have gained access to, is based on financial facts, and claims that Financial Fair Play should rule PSG out of the running for Messi’s signature.

“PSG’s ratio with regards to Financial Fair Play is worse than Barcelona’s,” the statement sent to the Court of Appeals by Dr. Juan Branco on behalf of Barcelona’s members.

“In 2019/20, 99 percent of PSG’s income was used for salaries, whereas it was 54 percent for Barcelona.”

Those behind the complaint, which has been sent and is now pending, hope to block Messi’s move to PSG, claiming that competition has been distorted by the French club’s spending.

It states that Joan Laporta’s reason for not being able to renew Messi’s contract was that, even with the player taking a 50 salary reduction, Barcelona’s salary would have been 110 percent of the cap imposed by the European body and by LaLiga.

  • PSG move is a possibility – Messi confirms

PSG move is a possibility – Messi confirms

Former FC Barcelona captain Lionel Messi on Sunday confirmed he could join Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) after his reluctant departure from the Spanish giants.

The 34-year-old Argentina superstar is a free agent after his contract at Camp Nou expired.

Asked about possibly joining the Parisians, Messi told a news conference: “That’s honestly one possibility, to reach those heights. At the minute, I’ve got nothing confirmed with anybody.”

According to Messi, there has been interest from a host of clubs in signing him.

He did not mention any other potential suitors, and only the richest clubs in the game are likely to be able to afford to acquire him, given his high wages.

“When the press release was published (that I was leaving FC Barcelona), I had a lot of calls, a lot of clubs that were interested,” Messi said.

“At the minute, I’ve not got anything closed but we’re talking about a lot of things.”

Asked about the possibility of facing FC Barcelona with his next club, he added: “The people in Barca know me, they know I’m a good player and they know I like competing.

“If I’m going to come here, then like I did here I’ll fight to win everything. The last years of my career I’ll finish it in my way, competing and fighting for titles, ending my career on a high.”

Last year Messi had asked to leave the club via the Spanish post’s burofax service but changed his mind.

This time he came to an agreement to stay but financial stumbling blocks at Barca meant La Liga would not allow the deal.

He is out of contract and will leave for free, with Messi saying a PSG move is now “possible” but that he has no final agreement with anyone at present.

“My family and I were convinced I wanted to stay here, that’s what we all wanted more than anything. We thought we’d be staying here in Barcelona, today I have to say goodbye to all of this,” he said.

“We’ve always made this our home, we’re at home and we thought we’d be staying here in Barcelona.

“I’ve been here so many years, my entire life since I was 13. After 21 years I’m leaving with my wife, my three little Catalan-Argentine kids, and I can’t tell you we won’t come back because this is my home, and I promised my children that.”

Messi wanted to leave Barca in 2020 amid a disagreement with then club president Josep Maria Bartomeu.

However, he insisted he was wholly committed to staying this time around.

“Last year I wanted to leave, but this year I didn’t. I was always completely up front about everything and I have to leave the club I love,” he added.

“This is the most difficult moment of my career. I have been through tough moments, defeats… but the next day you go back to training and you have another chance to avenge yourself.

That isn’t going to happen here, it’s the end. Now another chapter starts.”

The coronavirus pandemic also meant Messi played almost the last season-and-a-half of his Barca career without fans in attendance.

Asked if he would return to bid farewell to a full Camp Nou, he replied: “Obviously, for these people, I’m available for anything. Honestly, yes.

“I never imagined it this way. I leave this club without seeing the fans for a year and a half. If I’d imagined it, I would have imagined it with the Camp Nou full and being able to say goodbye properly,” the Argentina captain said.

Messi won 35 trophies with Barca, but acknowledged he feels the Blaugrana were lacking just one more title.

“I would have liked to have won another UEFA Champions League,” he said.

“We got to the semi-final (in 2019) and were knocked out by Liverpool. That’s football. But I don’t regret anything.

I tried to give my best, and sometimes it works out for the better or worst. I’m of the opinion we could have won more, but I achieved my objectives.”

Messi holds news conference at Camp Nou on Sunday

Lionel Messi will appear at a news conference at Camp Nou on Sunday, FC Barcelona announced on Saturday

The Argentine forward is widely expected to join French side Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the coming days after FC Barcelona said they could not afford to retain him.

That means the 34-year-old Messi is likely to share his perspective of the departure that has stunned world football.

His contact expired at the end of June and both parties had agreed fresh terms, only for FC Barcelona to announce the bombshell news on Thursday.

The Spanish club said they could not proceed due to “financial and structural obstacles”.

The club’s all-time record scorer, who has made more appearances for FC Barcelona than any other player, recently won the Copa America with Argentina.

He landed the Copa del Rey with FC Barcelona last season, adding to an array of trophies.

During his time at FC Barcelona, the only club of his professional career, Messi has helped the team win 10 LaLiga titles and four UEFA Champions Leagues.

Also, He has been awarded the Ballon d’Or a record six times.

FC Barcelona said Messi would address the media in the Auditori 1899, a large function room at the stadium, at 12:00 local time (1000 GMT) on Sunday.

The club added: “On Thursday, it was announced that the Argentine star would not be staying at FC Barcelona, where he has set club records for appearances, goals and official titles.”

There has been no indication of a change in FC Barcelona’s stance, with seemingly little prospect of a U-turn.

FC Barcelona’s announcement of Messi’s departure stated it was a move that “both parties deeply regret”.

The club cited “Spanish LaLiga regulations on player registration” as preventing them from handing him a new contract.

Like many clubs, FC Barcelona have been hit hard financially by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Heavy spending on players in recent seasons has largely not paid off, with Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid winning the most recent two LaLiga titles.

What Messi has to say about the recent chain of events is keenly awaited.

FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta said on Friday: “There was a moment when La Liga insinuated to us that the proposed contract could suffice.

”But, after a technical analysis by its financial commission, they then informed us that wouldn’t fully suffice either.”

  • Lille end PSG’s Trophee dominance with lone goal win

Lille end PSG’s Trophee dominance with lone goal win

first-half thunderbolt proved the difference as Lille secured the Trophee des Champions for the first time, in the process ending the competition’s eight-year domination by Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).

The Lille midfielder was teed up by Burak Yilmaz before blasting in from long range on the stroke of half-time.

PSG were unable to make their possession count from there on in.

The story of the final could have been different, however, had Abdou Diallo taken the best second-half opportunity.

He failed to convert a headed effort from inside the six-yard area with just Leo Jardim to beat.

After dethroning the capital side as Ligue 1 champions in the last campaign, Jocelyn Gourvennec’s side have now collected the first piece of silverware of France’s domestic season.

The showpiece event had taken place in Israel this year.

Yilmaz’s drilled free-kick seemed destined to open the scoring inside 10 minutes, though Keylor Navas’ fingertip save pushed the effort wide of his left-hand post.

PSG, who were hampered by big-name absentees, including Kylian Mbappe and Neymar, dictated proceedings for the remainder of the first half.

Yet, only Julian Draxler tested Jardim as he fizzed from range to force the goalkeeper into a smart save.

Yilmaz worked Navas once more on the counter, but it was Xeka who broke the deadlock as he powered in a right-footed effort from just outside the area.

Diallo should have restored parity with a close-range header but somehow managed to nod wide after Mauro Icardi had redirected the ball towards the left-back.

Icardi thought he had levelled things up with 15 minutes to go but his chipped finish was ruled out for offside, while Draxler volleyed inches wide moments later as PSG drew a blank.

PSG, who won the French top-flight title in seven out of the past eight campaigns before Lille’s unlikely triumph, were beaten.

Now, Gourvennec has claimed a trophy in his first competitive game in charge.

Opposite number Mauricio Pochettino was in the hunt for a third crown with the French giants – and, in fact, of his managerial career.

But it was Gourvennec who gained the initial psychological advantage, helping Lille lift the trophy at the third time of asking.

Presnel Kimpembe and Thilo Kehrer may have completed 159 of the 161 passes they attempted from the back as PSG remained patient in their build-up play.

Yet it was Jose Fonte and Sven Botman’s defensive guile that proved vital in deciding the outcome.

Lille’s centre-back pairing won every duel (two each) they competed for and kept Icardi’s chances to a minimum to secure a well-deserved clean sheet at Bloomfield Stadium.

Diallo missed PSG’s best chance of the second half as he headed wide to cap off a poor day for the left-back.

With Mitchel Bakker departing to Bayer Leverkusen, Pochettino would have been hoping for the defender to show he can be a capable deputy to Layvin Kurzawa.

However, Diallo lost possession a team-high 24 times, won just 44.4 per cent of his 18 duels on the left flank and was also booked.

This is the first time PSG have lost in 90 minutes in the competition, having triumphed in 10 of their 13 previous campaigns while failing in penalty shoot-outs in 2004, 2006 and 2010.

On their part, Lille have now won two in a row against PSG in all competitions (1-0 in Ligue 1 in April) for the first time since May to September 2002.

Also, PSG have failed to score nine times in all competitions since the beginning of the 2020/2021 season, including three times against Lille.

They are the only opponents they have failed against more than once.

Also, Xeka has scored three goals in his last 12 games with Lille in all competitions, as many as in his first 102.

It is his second goal from outside the penalty box, the first coming against Guingamp in August 2018.

Only Jonathan David (12) has been involved in more goals for Lille than Yilmaz in all competitions in 2021 (11 – 9 goals, 2 assists).

Lille kick off their Ligue 1 title defence with a trip to Metz on Aug. 8, while PSG travel to Troyes the day before for their season opener.

  • Mbappe informs Pochettino of contract decision at PSG

Mbappe informs Pochettino of contract decision at PSG

Kylian Mbappe has ruled out signing a new deal with PSG.

The 22-year-old has just one year left on his deal at the Parc des Princes having scored 132 goals in 171 appearances since moving to the French capital from Monaco in 2017.

And he as told Mauricio Pochettino that he has no desire to extend his contract.

Marca says the forward has informed his manager Pochettino that he does not want to extend his contract with the club, though Mbappe will not force a move away from PSG.

Real Madrid are waiting in the wings to find the perfect opportunity to sign Mbappe, after their patience paid off in snapping up David Alaba on a free transfer from Bayern Munich this summer.

  • PSG fans tell Pogba: We don’t want you here

PSG fans tell Pogba: We don’t want you here

Paris Saint-Germian fans are protesting against the prospect of signing Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba.

The Daily Mail says one set of fans have hung banners outside the Parc des Princes and PSG’s training ground to protest against his potential signing.

The banners, which appeared on Saturday morning, read: “Pogba, you should listen to your mother. She doesn’t want you here, neither do we”.

Nobody has claimed responsibility for the protest banners as yet, reports RMC Sport.

It’s not entirely clear what has caused the animosity from PSG fans towards Pogba, though the midfielder didn’t hold back in his celebrations when United won their Champions League last-16 tie in 2019.

Pogba was suspended for the second leg at the Parc des Princes and watched United’s dramatic late win from the stands but then came down to the pitch to celebrate wildly with his team-mates.

  • Mbappe turns back on PSG

    Mbappe turns back on PSG

KYLIAN Mbappe has decided to run down his contract with Paris Saint-Germain so that he can join Real Madrid on a free transfer next year.

That’s the latest line in Spain at least, with Mbappe’s future the constant source of speculation in recent months.

Real Madrid and Liverpool have both been heavily linked with a move for the 22-year-old, though the former’s financial woes have prevented them from being able to piece together a substantial bid.

Real will miss out on signing Mbappe this summer, but leading Spanish publication Marca claim they won’t have to wait long to get their man. Their latest report outlines Mbappe’s clear plan to run down his contract at PSG, detailing that nothing will stop him from pursuing his dream move.

The report adds that Mbappe has no interest in moving to Liverpool, meaning Jurgen Klopp will need to look elsewhere in his bid to freshen up his frontline. The Reds likely won’t be too disappointed – Mbappe’s desire to move to Madrid has been documented for some time – but PSG will need to lick their wounds, having been convinced that they could persuade him to ink fresh terms.

Plans had already been put in place to generate funds which would then be used to offer Mbappe a lucrative new deal. As many as nine players – including Mauro Icardi, Pablo Sarabia, Idrissa Gueye, Alphonse Areola and Leandro Paredes – are thought to have been placed on the chopping block, freeing up millions of euros in wages and potential bonuses.

  • I deny choosing PSG for money – Wijnaldum

Georginio Wijnaldum insists PSG made an approach to him ahead of Barcelona last season.

The former Liverpool midfielder signed for PSG last month, despite being in talks with Barca for almost a year.

Wijnaldum explained his decision at his presentation yesterday: “It’s funny because I must admit that it was a very difficult choice. I have supported Barça since I was young, I am a fan of this club. We were in negotiations with them and I had a good feeling but I was also negotiating with other clubs.

“PSG even arrived before Barça. We had just talked but it wasn’t really negotiations. But they returned after Barça’s interest. I spoke to Leonardo and then to (Mauricio) Pochettino whom I had known from his time at Tottenham, where I had spoken to him once because he wanted to recruit me.

“At the time, I already had a good feeling about working with him. He explained to me the PSG project, the fact that they want to win more titles in France but also in Europe. He told me what kind of club it was. I told myself it was a good project and I told them that I was open to listen to them. From there, the negotiations went very well and they did everything, really everything, to get me to sign.

“They were faster in the negotiations and I had a good feeling about signing for PSG. It wasn’t about making more money here because the difference wasn’t that huge. I deny having chosen PSG for the money.”

Messi will always have a role in my team – Sergio Ramos

Sergio Ramos boasts strong ties to Real Madrid, but they have now been severed after 16 years and the Paris Saint-Germain new boy is able to admit that Barcelona superstar “Lionel Messi will always have a role in my team”.

A veteran Spain international defender spent many seasons locking horns with an Argentine forward in La Liga, with his role as Blancos captain preventing him from lauding the efforts of a Clasico rival.

Ramos is, however, taking on a new challenge in France and, after seeing Messi linked with PSG amid the uncertainty surrounding his expired contract, the 35-year-old admits to being a big fan of a six-time Ballon d’Or winner.

“I like to play with the best players and Messi has been one of the best in the world,” Ramos has told TNT Sports.

“I have always said that Messi will always have a role in my team.”
