PSG appoints Pochettino as new coach after Tuchel’s sacking

Mauricio Pochettino has been announced as the new coach of French champions Paris Saint-Germain.

This following the sacking of Thomas Tuchel.

PSG said on its website that former Tottenham manager Pochettino had signed a contract until June 30, 2022, with an option for an additional year.

The 48-year-old Argentine was the only name in the frame to take over at the club where he played from 2001 to 2003 after PSG abruptly ended Tuchel’s involvement on December 24, reportedly for comments viewed as critical of the Qatari owners.

“This club has always held a special place in my heart. I have wonderful memories, especially of the unique atmosphere of the Parc des Princes,” Pochettino said in the PSG statement.

“I return to the club today with a lot of ambition and humility, and am eager to work with some of the world’s most talented players,” Pochettino said, adding he would do his utmost “to give our team the combative and attacking playing identity that Parisian fans have always loved.”

His priority will be to sate the Qatari-backed club’s quest for Champions League glory.

Tuchel, who oversaw the club’s first-ever Champions League final appearance last season, guided Neymar and company into the knock-out stages this season before being axed.

Pochettino’s first major test will be the Champions League last-16 away leg at Barcelona next month.

Pochettino will take charge of his first match next Saturday at Saint-Etienne as Ligue 1 resumes after the winter break with PSG one point off the leaders in third.

Kylian Mbappe pays tribute to sacked PSG coach

Paris St Germain forward Kylian Mbappe paid tribute to Thomas Tuchel after multiple media reports said the German coach had been sacked by the French Ligue 1 club.

French sports daily L’Equipe and German newspaper Bild said the 47-year-old, who helped PSG reach the Champions League final in August which they lost to Bayern Munich, was dismissed after Wednesday’s 4-0 win over Racing Strasbourg.

“It is sadly the law of football. Nobody will forget your time here. You wrote a wonderful part of the club’s history and I say to you: ‘thank you, coach’,” Mbappe said in an Instagram post on Thursday that was accompanied by a picture of him with Tuchel.

The club has not confirmed Tuchel’s departure. L’Equipe reported that Argentine Mauricio Pochettino, the former manager of English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur, is set to be named Tuchel’s successor.

Tuchel was appointed PSG head coach in 2018 and has won two Ligue 1 titles along with a domestic quadruple in his second season at the club.

Pochettino, who played for PSG as a defender in the early 2000s, has been out of a job since being dismissed by Spurs in November 2019.

He guided the London side to the Champions League final in the 2018-19 season.

“Pochettino is being lined up by @PSG_English. A terrific coach whose only minus is the lack of winning trophies… Well that’s about to change,” former England and Spurs striker Gary Lineker tweeted.

Former Argentina international Juan Pablo Sorin said: “Pochettino to @PSG_inside? Hopefully.”

  • PSG sack Thomas Tuchel hours after Strasbourg win

PSG sack Thomas Tuchel hours after Strasbourg win

French champions Paris St Germain have sacked their German born Coach Thomas Tuchel, French sports daily L’Equipe and German newspaper Bild reported on Thursday.

PSG were not immediately available to comment.

Tuchel took over the Ligue 1 side in June 2018, winning two league titles, the French Cup and French League Cup.

PSG are currently third in Ligue 1, a point behind leaders Lyon, while they are also through to the last 16 of the Champions League, where they will face Barcelona.

Tuchel’s sacking came hours after the 47-year-old took charge of Wednesday’s 4-0 home win against Strasbourg.

The victory moved the reigning champions within a point of both Lyon and second-placed Lille as the Ligue 1 season heads into a two-week winter break.

Former Borussia Dortmund coach Tuchel’s contract was set to expire at the end of this season.

He joined the Parisian club in May 2018 on an initial two-year contract after replacing Spaniard Unai Emery, agreeing a one-year extension in May 2019.

Former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has been linked regularly with the PSG job in recent months.

The 48-year-old Argentine, who played for PSG between 2001 and 2003, has been without a job since leaving Spurs in November 2019.

McTominay faults VAR after PSG loss at Old Trafford

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay was not happy with VAR after his team’s 3-1 loss to Paris Saint-Germain.

McTominay started the game in central midfield and put in a decent shift for his side.

United were well in the game until Marquinhos gave PSG a 2-1 lead against the run of play, before Fred got a second yellow minutes later.

Then PSG had control of the tie, and eventually scored a third on the break through Neymar, who also got their first goal.

Marcus Rashford scored United’s only goal of the game.

“I’m hearing their goal was partly offside as well. For us where is the balance in the game with how the referee has approached decisions?” McTominay told BT Sport after the game.

“We’re seeing mistakes week in, week out, for us it has to be rectified, get football back to the way it was (before VAR).”

UCL: Tuchel facing sack if PSG lose at Old Trafford

The job of PSG coach Thomas Tuchel is on the line tonight at Old Trafford

PSG need to win Manchester United to keep hopes alive of getting out their Champions League group.

El Chiringuito says should they fail, Tuchel will pay with his job.

The German’s contract expires in June and dismissal – should PSG lose at United – has not been ruled out by the club’s Qatari owners. Certainly, renewing his contract will be ruled out.

PSG meet United tonight having won only twice in their last five games.

  • Cavani has nothing to prove against PSG – Tuchel

Cavani has nothing to prove against PSG – Tuchel

PSG boss Thomas Tuchel insists Edinson Cavani has nothing to prove against Paris Saint-Germain, and that he’s well aware of the threat the “reliable” Manchester United striker will pose his team.

PSG travel to Old Trafford to face Group H leaders United in Manchester on Wednesday, with all eyes on star centre-forward Cavani.

Cavani joined United on a free transfer on deadline day in October, having left PSG as the Ligue 1 champions’ all-time leading scorer with 200 goals to his name in June.

Tuchel was asked about the controversy which is being investigated by the Football Association (FA), and he took the opportunity to hail Cavani on the eve of the showdown.

“I’m surprised [by the social media comment], because I know Edi as a calm person, determined on the pitch to help the team, which is a rare characteristic for a striker of his quality,” Tuchel told reporters.

“Always ready to do everything for the team. A big physical impact, scoring comes naturally to him and he’s reliable 24/7 – you can call him in the night and he will be there – to score, to defend, to score, to defend.

“I’m happy for him personally that he could show this to all Manchester United fans in the last game against Southampton – he was absolutely decisive for them.

“He does not need to show us tomorrow, we already know, so he can do a little pause, it’s not necessary to show us. If he will play, we will need to find answers for that.”

  • UCL: Neymar penalty eases pressure Thomas Tuchel

UCL: Neymar penalty eases pressure Thomas Tuchel

Neymar’s first-half penalty helped ease the pressure on boss Thomas Tuchel as Paris-St Germain leapfrogged RB Leipzig in Group H of the Champions League.

The Brazilian scored his first goal in six matches in the competition after Angel di Maria had been fouled.

Julian Nagelsmann’s side rallied but some wasteful finishing prevented them from equalising.

Leipzig drop to third in the group and are three points behind leaders Manchester United with two games left.

The German club, who travel to Istanbul Basaksehir in their next fixture, were unfortunate losers to the side that knocked them out in last term’s semi-final.

Dayot Upamecano, Emil Forsberg and Marcel Sabitzer all went close to levelling the scores in an open contest that they grew into.

The only bright spot for the hosts, aside from Neymar’s goal, was the return of influential Italy midfielder Marco Verratti, who came on in the 83rd minute after a six-week injury lay-off.

Tuchel’s side face group leaders Manchester United at Old Trafford in their next group game.

  • Ligue 1: Fabregas scores as Monaco beat PSG 3-2

Cesc Fabregas scored a late winner from the penalty spot as Monaco came from two goals down to stun reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain 3-2 in Ligue 1 on Friday.

Kylian Mbappe had netted a first-half brace, including a penalty, against his former side, taking him to 99 goals for PSG and leaving his current team seemingly on course for a ninth consecutive league win.

But German international Kevin Volland struck twice for Monaco after the break and Fabregas converted from 12 yards in the 84th minute after Abdou Diallo had been sent off for conceding the all-important penalty.

PSG remain clear at the top of Ligue 1, but this result is a major setback for Thomas Tuchel’s team before a crucial Champions League tie against RB Leipzig next week.

“I am more surprised than I am angry,” said Tuchel, who was also disappointed to see further first-half goals for Mbappe and Moise Kean disallowed.

“I saw two totally different halves. First of all we completely controlled the game…and then the second half was completely different. I can only say it is our responsibility.”

Niko Kovac’s Monaco climb up to second in the table, four points behind PSG, but Lille can reclaim second spot and move to within two points of the leaders if they beat Lorient on Sunday.

“If you come back from two down to win 3-2 it is for sure something special, but I don’t want to glorify it too much,” said ex-Bayern Munich coach Kovac.

“We cannot stop and say everything is done. It was a big victory but nothing more.”

PSG have been severely handicapped by injuries and suspensions this season, and Neymar was only deemed fit enough for a place on the bench at kick-off at the Stade Louis II after missing Brazil’s World Cup qualifiers over the last week due to fitness problems.

  • Neymar to Ramos: Mbappe and I will renew if you sign for PSG

Neymar to Ramos: Mbappe and I will renew if you sign for PSG

Kylian Mbappe is prepared to sign a new contract and stay with PSG – if Sergio Ramos arrives from Real Madrid.

That’s according to Spanish pundit Alfredo Duro, when speaking on El Chiringuito.

PSG are prepared to offer Ramos a three-year contract worth €60m to convince him to leave Madrid. Duro says PSG captain Neymar has called Ramos to encourage him to make the move to Paris.

He revealed the subject of the call, “Sergio, if you sign for PSG, let you know that I will renew for PSG the next day, but after me, something else will happen … another will renew, Kylian Mbappé will renew.

“If you join PSG, we will win at least two European Cups.”

Ramos’ contract at Real Madrid expires in June.

  • Neymar to sue Barca over unpaid bonuses

Neymar to sue Barca over unpaid bonuses

Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar is prepared to sue former club Barcelona for a total of €60m over bonuses which the Brazilian claims not to have received.

The 28-year-old joined the Blaugrana back in 2013 but shocked the world when he decided to leave Camp Nou after only four years. Neymar became unsettled in Catalonia and paid his own buy-out clause in order to force a move to French giants PSG in 2017.

But Cadena Ser reports that the superstar is not finished with Barca just yet.

Neymar is demanding that the European heavyweights pay him the rest of a signing bonus which he feels he is owed, after putting pen to paper on a new contract prior to leaving the club. He has since stated this intention in writing, while his ex-club have impugned the claim.

The Brazil international is subsequently suing Barça for a further €43.65m, as his previous employers had originally paid him the first installment of €22m before he joined PSG. La Blaugrana argued that they did not need to stump up the rest of his bonus due to his decision to depart Camp Nou, and an initial court hearing sided with the club and ruled against Neymar.

However, that is not the end of this debacle. The former Santos star’s legal team appealed this decision on 4 August, and by 7 September Barça had contested this new approach.

The court believed that the renewal bonus was part of the player’s salary, and based on the amount of time that Neymar was at the club, he was obliged to pay back €6.7m euros to the former Spanish champions. Unsurprisingly, this has not gone down well in Paris.
