  • Ligue 1: Monaco to refund visiting fans after humiliating 7-1 loss to PSG

Monaco will offer refunds to visiting fans who came to watch their club get hammered by Paris Saint-Germain 7-1 in Ligue 1 on Sunday.

The visiting fans were made to watch a debacle that saw PSG win the Ligue 1 title, and the former champs have offered to make amends.

Giovani Lo Celso and Angel Di Maria scored twice each for PSG, who also found the net through Edinson Cavani, Julian Draxler and a Radamel Falcao own-goal.

Monaco are second in Ligue 1, four points clear of Lyon and Marseille.

So bad was the defeat that after the match, Monaco took to Twitter after the game to offer reimbursement to their fans who were on hand at the Parc des Princes to witness the heavy defeat.“AS Monaco has made the decision to refund the red and white supporters present in the visitors’ gallery tonight,” the tweet read. “The arrangements will be communicated at the beginning of the week.”

Monaco vice president Vadim Vasilyev also apologised to supporters after the game.

“For us it was a catastrophic scenario,” Vasilyev said.

“The only ones who have lived up to it are our supporters and I thank them. They pushed the team, but there was nothing we could do. We will do everything to make them proud in the next match ”

  • UCL: Ronaldo scores as Madrid see off PSG 2-1 in France

European champions Real Madrid moved into the Champions League quarter-finals as they beat Ligue 1 leaders Paris St-Germain at Parc des Princes.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice in the first leg at home, which Real won 3-1, and he headed in from Lucas Vazquez’s cross to extend Real’s lead in France.

PSG had midfielder Marco Verratti sent off for two bookable offences, before Edinson Cavani pulled a goal back.

But Casemiro’s heavily deflected strike sealed Real’s victory.

For PSG, 14 points clear at the top of Ligue 1, it is the second successive season where they have gone out at the last-16 phase.

They were without injured forward Neymar and were not helped by Verratti’s needless dismissal in the 66th minute. He was booked when he fouled Casemiro in the first half and was shown a second yellow card when he sprinted after referee Felix Brych and was cautioned for dissent.

Madrid are now into the Champions League quarter-finals for an eighth successive season and remain on course for a third title in a row.

  • PSG can upset Real Madrid without Neymar – Dani Alves

Paris St-Germain are capable of beating Real Madrid’s strongest side even without injured talisman Neymar, says defender Dani Alves.

The Brazilian forward is out for the rest of the season after having surgery on a broken bone in his foot.

Ligue 1 leaders PSG lost the first leg 3-1 as a Cristiano Ronaldo double helped Real come from behind to win.

“Either we sit down and cry, or we get up and do what we have to do,” said Alves.

Neymar suffered a sprained ankle in addition to his foot break during PSG’s 3-0 league win over Marseille last week.

“With Neymar, PSG are stronger, and without Neymar we are still strong because there are other players,” Alves added.

“For sure, we will feel his absence. But I insist that between sitting down and crying and getting up and getting on with it, I always opt for the second option.”

PSG are unbeaten in all competitions at Parc des Princes this season, but they have failed to defeat Real Madrid in their three previous Champions League encounters.

Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema could make his 100th Champions League appearance as his side continue to chase their third successive title.

  • PSG forward, Neymar to have surgery on injured foot

Paris St-Germain forward Neymar will have surgery after suffering a fractured metatarsal and sprained ankle in Sunday’s Ligue 1 win over Marseille.

It means the 26-year-old Brazilian will miss Tuesday’s Champions League last-16 second-leg tie against Real Madrid.

PSG coach Unai Emery initially said Neymar had a “small chance” of facing Real, before Neymar’s father said he would be out for “six to eight weeks”.

The club said Neymar will be operated on in Brazil at the end of the week.

PSG added that after “three days of planned care” it was a joint decision by the club’s medical staff and the Brazilian national team to opt for surgery.

The striker joined PSG for a world record £200m fee from Barcelona last August and has scored 29 goals in 30 games.

PSG are 14 points clear of second-placed Monaco in the league and on 6 March will host Champions League holders Real Madrid, trailing 3-1 from the first leg.

  • UCL: Ronaldo double revived Madrid against PSG

A Cristiano Ronaldo double helped Real Madrid come from behind to boost their hopes of a third straight Champions League crown during a pulsating last-16 encounter with Paris St-Germain.

The Portuguese forward scored a late close-range strike after his penalty had cancelled out Adrien Rabiot’s opener at the end of a thrilling first half.

Brazilian left-back Marcelo wrapped up the victory minutes after Ronaldo’s tap-in with a goal created by Marco Asensio.

The emphatic spot-kick meant Ronaldo became the first player in Champions League history to score 100 goals for the same club.

Last season, Zinedine Zidane’s Real became the first team to retain the Champions League and won La Liga for the first time since 2012.

This term they are already out of the Copa del Rey and fourth in La Liga, 17 points behind leaders Barcelona as pressure on their French manager has mounted.

PSG played their part in an end-to-end contest, with Neymar’s delicate assist for Rabiot a highlight and Kylian Mbappe forcing a strong save from Real goalkeeper Keylor Navas.

But the result puts Real in control heading into the second leg at Parc des Princes on 6 March.

However, Zidane’s side also survived a second-half penalty claim with the scores level when Rabiot’s shot hit Sergio Ramos high on the arm.

  • French Cup: Angel Di Maria hits hat-trick in PSG win

French Cup: Angel Di Maria hits hat-trick in PSG win

Angel Di Maria scored a hat-trick as holders Paris Saint-Germain defeated second-tier Sochaux 4-1 on Tuesday to reach the French Cup quarter-finals, while Marseille demolished Ligue 2 outfit Bourg-en-Bresse 9-0.

Di Maria headed PSG, who were playing without the rested Neymar, ahead inside the first minute at the Stade Bonal in eastern France, but twice former winners Sochaux levelled through Florian Martin before the quarter hour.

Edinson Cavani restored the lead for Unai Emery’s team on 27 minutes when he turned in a Layvin Kurzawa cross at the far post, and Thiago Silva then rattled the crossbar with a header from a corner.

Di Maria added a third just prior to the hour with a composed finish after he was released in behind the home defence by a pass from Italian midfielder Marco Verratti.

He completed his hat-trick just three minutes later by forcing home a rebound from close range after Sochaux goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi parried a fierce shot from Cavani.

Dani Alves finished the game in goal for PSG after Kevin Trapp was sent off in the closing stages for a foul outside his area on Sochaux striker Thomas Robinet.

  • Neymar refutes Real Madrid links, says he’s happy at PSG

World-record signing Neymar Jr has played down persistent speculations linking him with a move away from Paris Saint-Germain to La Liga giants Real Madrid and insists he’s happy with the Parisiens.

The Brazilian superstar, who made a €222million transfer from Barcelona in August says he wants to make history with the French team and not thinking of leaving.

Neymar has become an integral part of PSG despite a publicized spat with fellow forward Edinson Cavani, scoring 26 goals in 24 appearances.

Asked about Madrid following his goalscoring display in PSG’s 4-0 rout of Montpellier Saturday, Neymar told reporters: “I’m happy with my team-mates and I’m happy at PSG.

“I have good games and numbers and come here to make history and do my best.
“Speculation has always existed and will always exist. Since Santos and in my years in Barcelona, all the transfers windows had something with my name. It’s impossible to stay out of it.

“But I’m happy because it means I’m a good player, and quality players are always speculated.”

  • Mbappe reveals Real Madrid talks ahead of PSG move

Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe revealed he held talks with Real Madrid prior to moving to the French capital, though he insisted it is in the past.

A move to Spanish and European champions Madrid appeared on the horizon for Mbappe amid intense speculation after helping Monaco win Ligue 1 in 2016-17.

The 19-year-old scored 27 goals in all competitions and eventually joined the likes of Neymar and Edinson Cavani at PSG for a reported €180 million – on an initial season-long loan with a mandatory purchase clause – despite talks with Madrid, who he will come up against in the Champions League last 16.

“It’s true that we spoke, but I think that’s now in the past for me and for Real Madrid,” Mbappe told Marca.

The transition from the Stade Louis II to Parc des Princes has been seamless for Mbappe, who has scored 12 goals in all competitions.

Mbappe’s eight Ligue 1 goals has helped PSG build a nine-point lead atop the table, while the France international has netted four times in the Champions League as his club won Group B over the likes of Bayern Munich, Celtic and Anderlecht, while also setting a group stage record with 25 goals scored.

  • UEFA Champions League:Chelsea do not fear Barca or PSG-Hazard

UEFA Champions League:Chelsea do not fear Barca or PSG-Hazard

Eden Hazard says Chelsea do not fear facing Paris St Germain or Barcelona in the Champions League last 16 after his side were held to a draw by Atletico Madrid and missed out on top spot in their group.

As it stands, Turkish side Besiktas are the only other possible opponents for the Blues in the knockout stages.

“It’s not a problem who we get, we are Chelsea,” said the attacker.

“We know PSG and Barcelona are very good but we are a top team too. We can do anything.”

Chelsea had dominated against Atletico until the opening goal, with Alvaro Morata going close and Hazard almost weaving through the visiting defence.
But Saul Niguez escaped the attentions of Tiemoue Bakayoko to plant home a header from Fernando Torres’ near-post flick-on after 56 minutes.

Chelsea piled forward as time ebbed away, and Stefan Savic turned Eden Hazard’s cross into his own net as the pressure told.
But, with Roma beating Qarabag in the Italian capital, Chelsea could not find the second goal and the victory needed to regain the lead in Group C.
