UCL: Arsenal hit seven to thrash PSV

Arsenal demolished PSV Eindhoven 7-1 in the Netherlands to take a commanding lead into the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.

The Gunners scored three goals in the first half and four goals in the second to all but confirm their place in the quarter-finals of the competition, with a trip to Madrid on the horizon.

Ismael Saibari hit the crossbar early on for the home side but Arsenal took control after Jurrien Timber scored Arsenal’s opener in the 18th minute.

Ethan Nwaneri doubled Arsenal’s lead just three minutes later when Myles Lewis-Skelly cleverly cut the ball back for the 17-year-old to powerfully score past Walter Benitez.

Lewis-Skelly, who had already been booked, was fortunate to stay on the pitch shortly after when he fouled Ledezma, and Mikel Arteta replaced him with Riccardo Calafiori with 10 minutes of the first half left.

Mikel Merino added a third following a defensive mix-up before Noa Lang pulled one back from the penalty spot for PSV after Thomas Partey fouled Luuk De Jong.

Arsenal continued to attack with ease as soon as the second half started and Martin Odegaard made sure there was not going to be a PSV comeback when he scored from close range after Benitez pushed a cross out into the area.

Substitute Calafiori then combined well with Leandro Trossard who chipped the ball over Benitez from close range to score Arsenal’s fifth just one minute later.

Odegaard scored his second with an excellent individual effort before Calafiori grabbed a goal late on as Arsenal registered their record away win in the Champions League.

In the new format, Arsenal can plot their route through the competition, and despite having next week’s second leg to come, they look set to take on either 15-time champions Real Madrid, or their city rivals Atletico.

Real won the first leg of their last-16 tie 2-1 on Tuesday with the second leg to follow at Atletico.

Europa League: Arsenal qualify for knockout stage with games to spare

Arsenal secured their spot in the Europa League knockout stage with two games to spare after beating PSV Eindhoven 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday.

After struggling to make their dominance count for much of the encounter, midfielder Granit Xhaka smashed a first-time shot home in the 71st minute to make it four wins from four games for Mikel Arteta’s side.

Arsenal are now guaranteed to finish in the top two of Group A and are five points clear of second-place PSV ahead of the return fixture in Eindhoven in a week’s time.

A draw in that match will be enough for Arsenal to clinch top spot in the group and go straight into the competition’s last 16.

Teams that finish second in their group will face a playoff against a side that drops out of the Champions League.

Thursday’s match had been originally scheduled for Sept. 15 but was postponed due to a lack of available police in London during a period of national mourning following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

But the delay did nothing to halt the momentum of an Arsenal team that have made a sensational start to the season to top the English Premier League table.

Arsenal were in the ascendency for much of the first half, though failed to seriously trouble the PSV goal.

Gabriel Jesus, looking for his first Europa League goal, was lively but dragged an effort wide from 20 yards and then just failed to get his head on the end of a Gabriel flick-on from a corner.

Jesus was again heavily involved at the start of the second half, first creating a half-chance for himself before teeing up Bukayo Saka for the clearest opening yet for the hosts.

Jesus sent Saka clean through on goal with an inch-perfect through ball but the England winger’s tame effort was denied by the feet of PSV goalkeeper Walter Benitez.

But the momentum was only heading one way and it was no surprise when an Arsenal goal finally arrived with 19 minutes remaining.

Takehiro Tomiyasu delivered the assist with a chipped cut back from the right and Xhaka, evidently full of confidence, swept the ball in on his weaker right foot.

Even after falling behind, PSV, managed by former great Arsenal rival and Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, failed to seriously test United States goalkeeper Matt Turner in the Arsenal goal.

Arsenal’s league game against Man City postponed

Arsenal’s league fixture against Manchester City in October has been postponed to allow for the Europa League game between the London club and PSV Eindhoven to be played.

UEFA and the Premier League announced this on Wednesday.

The group stage game between Arsenal and PSV, which was scheduled to be played on Thursday at the Emirates Stadium, was postponed due to lack of adequate security personnel following the death of Queen Elizabeth.

The match will now be played on Oct. 20, a day after Arsenal were to face City.

“UEFA would like to thank the Premier League and the clubs concerned for their flexibility and cooperation in the rescheduling of the UEFA Europa League match,” UEFA said in a statement.

The Premier League said a date for the league game between Arsenal and City would be announced in “due course.”

League-leaders Arsenal travel to face Brentford in the Premier League on Sunday.

Why I chose PSV over Man Utd – Madueke

PSV winger Noni Madueke admits turning down Manchester United.

Released by Tottenham, Madueke, 19, was linked with a move to United in 2018 and was tipped to join their developmental squad but instead chose to join PSV.

“Chelsea, Manchester United, a lot of European clubs [made offers],” Madueke said.

“I came here one time and as soon as I came I wanted to sign straight away. I knew going from Tottenham to United is pretty much the same thing.

“The reason I wanted to go was to progress quicker into the first team. PSV is a top European club. It made so much sense at the time and it makes sense now.”

  • De Jong leaves PSV for Sevilla in €15m deal

Netherlands international striker Luuk de Jong has moved to Sevilla from PSV Eindhoven in a 15-million euro (£13 million) deal, signing a four-year contract, the Dutch club said on Tuesday.
De Jong, 28, scored 112 goals in 204 matches for PSV over the last five seasons, in which they won three Dutch league titles, and was the joint top scorer in last season’s Dutch league with 28 goals.
He has also played in the Bundesliga with Borussia Moenchengladbach and in the Premier League with Newcastle United.
De Jong played for the Netherlands in last month’s UEFA Nations League final against Portugal.
