Uncollected PVCs below 20% in Bayelsa, says INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Bayelsa, has said that the uncollected Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) in the state was below 20 per cent.

The new Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Mr Monday Udoh, made this disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Yenagoa on Tuesday.

Udoh explained that the commission had so far distributed more than 80 per cent PVCs to the owners in the state.

Recall that INEC registered no fewer than 1,036,442 eligible persons during voters’ registration exercise in the state.

”The distribution was decentralised at ward levels including the coastal communities to ensure that those, who registered, collect their PVCs before the general elections.

”As at today, the percentage of card collection is more than 80 per cent; what is left is small, because of the voter education that was carried out.

“We are still working hard to ensure that all PVCs get to the rightful owners.

”For the remaining ones, which is below 20 per cent, the commission will ensure that they are distributed before Feb. 8 deadline for collection.

”On terrain challenges in the state, the commission is in talks with the boat owners associations to engage their services during the elections.

”He expressed confidence that the forthcoming elections would be free and credible; that is, on the basis of one man one vote,” he stated.

    Why I don’t have a PVC- Seun

As the general elections draws closer, Afro-beat musician, Seun Kuti has disclosed why he doesn’t have permanent voters card.

The Grammy nominee noted that he won’t be participating in the 2019 elections because he doesn’t believe in any of the candidates.

Kuti made this known as a guest on the popular breakfast TV show ‘Your View’

“I don’t have a PVC and It is because I don’t believe in any of the candidates and the political set up as it is today, there is no point for me to disturb myself and queue”.

The saxophonist further urged Nigerians to take responsibility for the fate of the country.

“Everybody should try and take responsibility for the development of this nation. What is missing in Nigeria is the real Nigerian culture, we have ethnic cultures”.

Seun doesn’t support artistes who rub minds with politicians, he said It is greed that makes such artistes act that way.

“I can’t go to the bank with my name and withdraw money. I have to work. It’s greed that makes artistes romance politicians. How much do we really need? If I am given 10 million dollars today, I won’t take it.I will take it only If I know it is not exploiting anybody else”.

  • 2019: Engage With Stakeholders to Neutralise PVC Buyers, Saraki Tells INEC

2019: Engage With Stakeholders to Neutralise PVC Buyers, Saraki Tells INEC

Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki has advised the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to immediately call a meeting of stakeholders in the next month’s general elections with the sole aim of formulating plans and ideas on how to render useless the intention of politicians who he claimed are buying Permanent Voters Card (PVC).

Saraki, while reacting to a statement credited to Prof. Yakubu that some politicians were already scheming to purchase PVCs, urged the INEC boss not to stop at raising the alarm but immediately devise water-tight arrangement to make futile the efforts of such unscrupulous politicians.

In a statement by his Special Adviser (Media and Publicity), Yusuph Olaniyonu, the Senate President said the development constitutes a major threat to the successful conduct of the 2019 Polls, as it can become the single factor to decide where victory swings in the election.

“We have continued to maintain that manipulation of election results does not start and end on Election Day. It starts long before the day and goes on even after the declaration of results. That is why we have to continually be vigilant and once we identify any threat to free, fair and transparent conduct of a credible election like the INEC chairman has done, all stakeholders must put heads together to block the loopholes.

“All stakeholders must come up fast with a solution to render useless the antics of those who intend to procure voter’s cards. We all need to put our heads together and I am sure that such a stakeholders’ meeting will not only nip in the bud the looming danger, it will also engender general confidence in the system and create a system in which all stakeholders become problem solvers”, he stated.

He added that in the next six weeks, preceding the first set of elections and immediately after the elections, it was important for INEC to devise an arrangement in which it would constantly consult with stakeholders to identify issues affecting the process and how to find joint solutions to them.

2019: All PVCs ready for collection – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said it has printed Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) for all new registered voters between 2017 and 2018 and they are ready for collection.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, disclosed this on Friday in Abuja after the swearing-in of the new Secretary to the Commission, Mrs Rose Oriaran-Anthony.

Yakubu also said that all the PVCs of those who requested for replacement and relocation of their cards ahead of 2019 general elections, had also been printed and ready for collections.

”The commission has printed all PVCs for new registrants between April 27, 2017 and Aug. 31, 2018.

”We have also printed all the requests for replacement of lost cards, all requests for transfer and relocations.

”The last batch that we printed were for those who applied for transfer and relocation, and those who applied for replacement of damaged and defaced cards.

”This will be delivered immediately after the Christmas break. So we are happy to say that all 14.5 million or so new registered voters have their cards printed and delivered to the states. So we are good to go on that,” Yakubu said.

Yakubu, who also spoke on the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and its implications on the 2019 general elections, said that the commission would meet with union leaders in tertiary institutions for a way forward.

The INEC Chairman said that the ongoing strike was worrisome as the commission also sourced some of its election ad hoc staff from the tertiary institutions.

”The bulk of the ad hoc staff will be drawn from the National Youth Service Corps members but where there is shortfall, and obviously there would be shortfall, we rely on the universities.

”Remember we also rely on the universities to draw our collation and returning officers.

”So the ongoing strike is worrisome in case some of them say because of the ongoing strike they will not participate in the elections.

”But the ASUU has been good friend of the commission and we intend to meet with the President of the ASUU next week so that we can discuss and iron this out.

”We will also extend it to the lecturers of polytechnics and colleges of education so that we will meet with the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) and Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) and all other unions in the tertiary education sub-sectors,” the chairman said.

  • Katsina bye-election: Speaker barred from voting because of PVC

The Speaker of Katsina State House of Assembly, Abubakar Kusada, could not vote during Saturday bye-election for the Ingawa/Kusada/Kankia Federal House of Representatives due to his lack of a Permanent Voters Card.

Kusada, who was the All Progressives Congress candidate in the election, nonetheless, won the election in his polling unit.

The Speaker had arrived his Unguwar Kaya primary school polling unit at 12.47pm, armed with a temporary voter card.

After his name was checked and seen on the voters’ list, the Speaker could, however, not vote since he did not possess a Permanent Voter Card, which was required to exercise his franchise.

His name on the voters’ list carried the number:90FXBO1B8A2957D1208.

He subsequently left the polling unit.

The Speaker later explained to journalists that the development was caused by the recent transfer of his polling unit.

He was hopeful that the issue would be resolved before the 2019 general elections.

He said, “I transferred my polling unit and this could have been responsible for the challenge, I experienced at the polling unit.

But INEC said the issue would be resolved before the next general elections and I will vote then.”

The Speaker nonetheless won the bye-election in his polling unit.

In preparations to the 2019 General Elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday released data of its continuous voters registration (CVR) exercise.

TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports a gender analysis of the data shows that 7,386,583 females and 6,247,831 males have been registered so far, resulting in a total of 13,634,414 new registrants.

    INEC CVR gender analysis

According to the INEC new registration statistics, while a total of 854,362 Nigerians have recently collected their permanent voters cards (PVCs), 696,643 made transfer requests and 1,067,406 made replacement requests.

    INEC CVR report

TNG reports the ongoing CVR exercise across the country commenced on 27th April 2017, the Commission opening permanent registration centres in all its 774 Local Government offices and 672 other centres

“This was to ensure that all-year round, Nigerians who turn 18 years and who had not registered previously have an opportunity to register,” INEC stated.

In order to have enough time to clean up the provisional register and print the Permanent Voters Card (PVC) in good time for the general elections the Commission, after consultation with stakeholders, decided to suspend the exercise with effect from 17th August 2018, to resume after the elections.

However, many Nigerians appealed to the Commission to extend the exercise. Consequently, the Commission decided to extend the CVR to 31st August 2018.

The exercise continues in all the designated registration centres every day, including weekends, but excluding public holidays, between 9am and 5pm.

INEC said that “the CVR figures released included Anambra 2017, Ekiti and Osun state RA level CVR. The 2016 EVR is the 2015 EVR figures plus figures from RA level CVR in Ondo, Bayelsa, Kogi, Edo and FCT”.

  • Daura: PDP charges Buhari, APC to speak out on alleged N21b loot

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), yesterday, challenged President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to speak out on the N21 billion, guns and thousands of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) allegedly found in the residence of the sacked Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Lawal Daura.

The PDP in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, said the alleged discovery has exposed the hypocrisy of the Buhari administration. The opposition party stated that it had become obvious to the world that the Presidency had been using its “much hyped fight against corruption and sustained harassment of opposition as a cover to divert public attention from alleged humongous stealing within the government.

It added that while the Presidency and the ruling party were harassing members of the opposition on trumped-up corruption charges, their agents were busy frittering away and warehousing trillions of naira to fund their re-election in 2019 and wasteful lifestyles. The party said: “Today, the sneaky ways of this Presidency have further been exposed and it must not in any way seek to disown the sacked DSS DG as Nigerians already know that he was merely one out of the numerous agents being used by the APC and Presidency cabal in their nefarious activities, including warehousing money, fake PVCs and weapons to be unleashed during the 2019 elections.

“What the APC and the Buhari Presidency should note is the eternal reality that though the truth may be suppressed for a while, it always has a way of showing itself to light at the end.

“Nigerians are already aware of the leaked memo detailing alleged underhand oil contracts to the tune of N9 trillion at the NNPC and the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, which are under the direct supervision of Mr. President.

“They are already aware of the alleged stealing of over N25 billion meant for the health needs of the people, from the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and how the indicted and suspended Executive Secretary was recalled by Mr. President.

“They are aware of the alleged diversion of crude oil worth N1.1 trillion, using 18 unregistered companies; the diversion of N18 billion Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) funds and billions of unremitted revenue from sale of crude for which there have been deadlock at the Federal Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC), all of which are being swept under the carpet by the Buhari Presidency.

“The time is ripe for the Buhari Presidency and its disintegrating APC to tell the nation how these corruption acts were allegedly perpetrated under an administration that lay claim to integrity.”

The Resident Electoral Commissioner in Ekiti State, Prof. Abdulganiy Raji, has warned those who have no Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to stay away from polling units during the conduct of the state governorship election on Saturday.

According to him, Independent National Electoral Commission gave enough time for registered voters to collect their PVCs and lodge complaints before the process ended on Wednesday.

He said although Rapid Response Squad would be positioned at strategic locations during the election, no armed policeman would be at any of the polling units so that the electorate would not feel intimidated.
