Oyetola urges Osun voters to safeguard PVC ahead of guber election

Gov. Gboyega Oyetola of Osun has urged the electorate in the state to safeguard their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of the July 16 gubernatorial election in the state.

The governor made the remarks on Thursday during what was described as a “strategic tour” of Ila Federal Constituency Area of the state.

Oyetola also urged members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to keep their membership registration slips safe ahead of the party’s primary.

He appealed to them not to allow any individual to deceive them with ”fake loan” to steal still their PVCs from them.

“I implore you to keep the party’s registration slip issued during the accreditation exercise and your voter’s card safe.

“With the look of things, it seems that the party will opt for direct primary, if it is so, the membership slip will be used for the exercise.

“Some people want to collect your PVC and membership slip with the pretence to give you a loan.

“They are all liars, the loan that they did not give you two years ago, they are lying to give you months to the election.

“They are promising you food now, they are liars. We started our food support programme last year April and we did not stop it.

“We are not doing this because we want to get votes from you, but it is because of our genuine love for the people.

“Let us be prepared for the primary election of our party and the gubernatorial election,” he said.

In his remarks, the Orangun of Ila, Oba Abdul Oyedotun, said the achievements of the governor in the development of the state were enough testimonies for him to be reelected.

Oyedotun, who noted that the governor would triumph in the election, said the electorate were behind him.

“Your achievements speak for themselves and we are proud of what you have done.

“Your second term ambition will be successful and whoever tries to stand on your way, will not witness your success story.

“ Don’t despair, our ancestors were faced with travails and they emerged triumphant, you shall overcome yours too.

“Your detractors will witness your success and you will triumph over them,” the Oba said.

  • FACT CHECK: 2011 voters cards have expired. How true?

FACT CHECK: 2011 voters cards have expired. How true?

There are messages currently circulating on social media, especially via WhatsApp, claiming that voters cards registered in 2011 and issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have expired.

One of such messages in circulation urges Nigerians with voters cards to check the back of the cards and that if a card was registered in 2011, it has expired.

The messages claim that new card readers purchased by the electoral management body cannot read the 2011 voters cards.

One of the messages is reproduced below:

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Please, check the back of your Voters Card, if it was registered in 2011, you need to revalidate it at the INEC office. New INEC Card reader for 2023 election will not be able to read it. Do it now, to avoid disenfranchisement.

    HOW TRUE IS THE CLAIM?

Checks by TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) revealed that voters cards, otherwise known as Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), do not carry an expiry date.

A statement obtained from the INEC urged Nigerians to disregard the misleading message, stating that voters cards issued in 2011 have not expired.

The statement by the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Mr Rotimi Oyekanmi has it on record that PVCs issued by INEC in 2011 and after could still be used by their respective owners to vote in all elections, including the upcoming 2023 General Election.

He also described as untrue the report that “New Card Reader” would be used for the 2023 general elections, stating thus: “To be sure, PVCs issued in 2011 and after do not need any revalidation. It is also not true that the Commission will use the so called “New Card Reader” for the 2023 General Election.

“What the Commission intends to use is a multi-purpose gadget , known as the INEC Voter Enrolment Device (IVED). It is currently being used for the physical registration of voters. During an election, it will facilitate the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), which provides for both fingerprint and facial authentication. The device will also be used to upload individual polling unit election results to the INEC Result Viewing portal (IReV) in real time on election day.

“The general public should therefore disregard the fake news making the rounds that the PVCs issued in 2011 need revalidation. There is no need to revalidate any PVC issued by INEC for election purposes”.

    VERDICT

The claim, fuelled by a National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, that 2011 voters cards have expired, is misleading, false, and, therefore, should be disregarded.

  • Tinubu apologises over statement on expired PVC

Tinubu apologises over statement on expired PVC

A former governor of Lagos State, Sen. Bola Tinubu, has apologised for saying the Permanent Voters Card (PVC) has expired.

Tinubu gave the apology in a statement by his Media Aide, Mr Tunde Rahman, on Thursday in Lagos.

It would be recalled that while addressing a delegation of women from Lagos at the APC’s Women Conference in Abuja on Tuesday, Tinubu asked them to check the status of their PVC.

He had said this was to make sure that their cards had not expired.

The statement, however explained that Tinubu used the word ‘expire’ instead of saying the “cards may have to be updated or revalidated ’’.

“Immediately upon being apprised of this, Tinubu apologised for the incorrect statement and felt sorry for any confusion it may have caused.”

Tinubu commended INEC for working toward free and fair electoral process and stressed the need for Nigerians to fully participate in elections to strengthen democracy.

He, therefore, urged the women to continue to mobilise voters to update their PVCs.

Tinubu also urged them to mobilise at the grassroots levels so that elections reflected the sovereign will of all the people for a true democracy to be established.

He urged the women to review their voting details with INEC to ensure that they were updated before the forthcoming elections.

“The gap between those who registered for elections and those who usually turned up to pick their PVCs is wide. Such constitutes a serious challenge, which may impede the growth of our democracy,’’ he said.

  • Bayelsa Guber Poll: REC says satisfied with PVC collection rate

The Bayelsa Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mr Monday Tom, says INEC is satisfied with the percentage rate of Permanent Voter Card (PVC) collection, promising that the body is adequately prepared to conduct the Nov. 16 governorship election in the state.

Tom made the assertion in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Port Harcourt, the Rivers capital.
The REC said only about 33,000 PVCs remained uncollected out of the 923,000 for eligible registered voters in the state, representing over 90 per cent of distributed PVCs ahead of the governorship election.
“We actually extended PVC collection to between Sept. 2 and Sept. 30, just to ensure that electorate have their PVCs.
“And during the exercise, the response was high because out of about 47,000 PVCs with INEC over 15,000 were collected, leaving a balance of about 33,000 unclaimed PVCs,” he said.
He also said that so far, the commission had concluded training for INEC staff and distribution of non-sensitive materials.
“As far as the commission is concerned, we are doing the best to get totally prepared for the Bayelsa gubernatorial election.
“We’ve concluded on most of the training for officers, we have trained the Senior Polling Officers (SPOs), we have done all levels of non-sensitive materials received, batched and set for onward distribution to the racks.
“Due to the difficult terrain in Bayelsa with about 70 per cent water component, we adopted to use the racks system and not the Local Government Areas, this is to ensure prompt and easy access to the polling units.
“So far, we have got all our non-sensitive materials for the election, we have harvested the SPOs and by next week we shall be training the Polling Officers (POs) and the Assistant Polling Officers (APOs),” he added.
Tom said finances required for the conduct of the election were already secured at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
According to him, planning an election is like climbing a ladder, adding that so far, the commission was almost done with the entire process.
“Today, we are handing over registers to 45 political parties that will participate in the election and this exercise represents almost the concluding part of every election plan,” he said.
  • CAN calls for prayers, calm over elections’ postponement

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Kogi chapter, has advised Nigerians to remain calm and continue to pray fervently for peaceful elections.

Its state chairman, Dr John Ibenu, gave the advice while speaking to newsmen after a church service on Sunday in Lokoja.

The cleric was reacting to the rescheduling of the Presidential and National Assembly elections to Feb. 23 from Feb. 16 by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Ibenu appealed for calmness despite describing the postponement as being ‘unfortunate’.

”God is in charge; everything works together for good to them that love God; we should see it as part of the answers to our prayers from God.

“Those who are planning to cause violence should desist because God will bring all their works and actions to judgment,” Ibenu said.

He advised Nigerians, especially Christians, to remain calm and continue to pray fervently for peaceful and violence-free elections.

The cleric also advised Nigerians to shun all acts of electoral violence and malpractice at all times and in all places before, during and after the elections.

He urged Christians to vote for candidates who would stand for righteousness, peace, joy, security, job creation, unity and progress of Nigerians.

Also, Pastor Dapo Olumuyiwa, the State Pastor of Living Faith Church, Lokoja, urged Christians to be resilient and not be discouraged.

He admonished them not to be disappointed by the rescheduling of the elections, but rather be more committed to voting against evil in Nigeria.

In his sermon with the title: ”Walking In Dominion”, the cleric said that believers had been redeemed to walk in established dominion by Jesus Christ.

He appealed to the congregation to come out massively on Feb. 23 to exercise their civic rights without any fear of intimidation.

The cleric also urged them not to sell their votes nor release their PVCs to anybody no matter the inducement.

He prayed that God would silence the devil and all its agents perpetrating evil against Nigeria.

  • Delta records 95% PVC collection

    Delta records 95% PVC collection

Dr Cyril Omorogbe, the Delta Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has announced that the state has so far recorded 95 per cent in Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) collection.

Omoregbe, who made this known in statement on Friday in Asaba, said that Delta was currently ranked among the states that had recorded high number of PCV collection in the country.

The REC however noted that it would be impossible to achieve 100 per cent collection owing to relocation of registrants and natural disasters, among other impediments.

He said, “In PVC collection, Delta as a state, is way ahead of other states in the country. At this point, we are actually knocking on about 95 per cent of collection.

“There are some states that perhaps, cannot boast of 65 per cent. Don’t expect 100 per cent PVC collection also.

“There is no way you can expect 100 per cent collection, because people who have some of these PVCs have probably let the state. Some of them are dead,’’ he said.

He said that INEC had extended the period of PVC collection by three days – Feb 8 to Feb. 11., adding that the exercise would last between 9am and 6 pm daily.

In another development, the Head of Voter Education and Publicity, Department Mr Bukola Ojeme, said that the commission had trained all categories of election duty staff ready for deployment.

Ojeme said this in Asaba, during a town hall meeting with women groups and gender-focused Civil Societies Organisations (CSOs) in the state.

He said that election would be conducted in the 5,863 voting points which made up the 3,624 polling units in the 270 wards in the state.
