    Central  American side  Costa Rica became the 32nd country to qualify for the  Qatar 2022 World Cup.

    Joel Campbell’s early goal was enough for his country to reach a third successive tournament as they defeated 10-man New Zealand 1-0 in their intercontinental playoff on Tuesday.

    The former Arsenal striker scored in the 3rd minute to slot in a cross from Jewison Bennette.

    New Zealand had an equaliser ruled out by VAR for a foul in the build-up to Chris Wood putting the ball in the back of the net in the 39th minute.

    New Zealand ended the match with 10 men as substitute Kosta Barbarouses was sent off for fouling Francisco Calvo.

    Costa Rica have now qualified for the World Cup six times and this will be their third successive appearance.

    Their best performance came in 2014 when they reached the quarter-finals, finishing top of a group that included Uruguay, Italy and England, before beating Greece on penalties in the last 16 and losing in a shootout to the Netherlands.

    The World Cup begins on 21 November with Costa Rica playing 2010 champions Spain in their opener on 23 November.

    It’s the first time the worldcup will be played in the winter due to the difference in weather condition of the the host country Qatar.

    The Black stars of Ghana interim manager Otto Addo has praised his boys for putting up a spirited performance against the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

    Addo mentioned that Ghana created a lot of chances but was just unlucky to have scored.

    The manager said the Ghanaians will get the job done in Abuja, saying that the pressure is now on Nigeria.

    He said that the Black stars will try to score an away goal in Abuja so as to be at the driver’s side, saying away goal counts for two incase it ends in a score draw.

     

    Asked about home fans supportership, Addo said he was highly impressed with the conduct of Ghanaian fans. He added that they trooped in en masse to cheer up the Black stars and hoping the players will appreciate them by grabbing a Worldcup ticket in Abuja.

    European Champions Italy sent packing from Qatar 2022 Worldcup play-offs

    European champions Italy will not be part of the mundial in Qatar as they suffered a shock 0-1 defeat to less fancied North Macedonia.

    The Macedonians held the Italians to a 0-0 scoreline before the Macedonian striker struck in additional time 92mins to give them a slim 1-0 win over the Italians.

    The result means that European Champions will miss out of the Worldcup in Qatar whilst North Macedonia go ahead to Play Portugal in the final playoff to determine who goes through to the mundial.

    The Azurris of Italy have now missed back to back worldcup, they didn’t make it to the last one held in Russia .

    Portugal already defeated Turkey3-1 to book a place in the final play-off next week.

    Qatar 2022 Play-off: Super Eagles depart for Ghana clash

    The Super Eagles of Nigeria on Thursday morning departed Abuja for Kumasi for the first leg of the 2022 FIFA World Cup play-off against the Black Stars of Ghana.

    The Eagles who had been training in Abuja for the crucial clash departed the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja aboard a chartered Air Peace flight.

    All 25 players in camp, the technical crew led by Augustine Eguavoen and some other officials were on board.

    Captain of the team, Ahmed Musa told NAN that the team would do its best to make Nigeria proud and ultimately secure the vital World Cup ticket.

    The Super Eagles will face the Black Stars of Ghana on Friday at the Baba Yara Stadium, Kumasi, in the first leg of the World Cup play-off, with the return leg slated for Tuesday at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

    The winners over the two legs will advance to the World Cup billed for Qatar from Nov. 21 to Dec. 18.
