Abandoned Brazil, Argentina World Cup qualifier to be played – FIFA

Global football governing body FIFA confirmed on Monday that the abandoned 2022 World Cup qualifier between Brazil and Argentina will be replayed next month.

“The FIFA Appeal Committee has taken decisions on the appeals lodged by the Brazilian Football Association (CBF) and the Argentinian Football Association (AFA),” a statement said.

“After analysing the submissions of both parties and considering all circumstances of the case, the Appeal Committee confirmed that the match would be replayed.

”It also upheld the fine of 50,000 Swiss francs (50,200 dollars) that was imposed on both associations as a result of the abandonment.”

The match in Sao Paolo on Sept. 5, 2021, was abandoned after only few minutes.

Brazilian health authorities had insisted that some Argentina players had entered the country in breach of then coronavirus regulations.

FIFA did reduce a 250,000 Swiss franc fine for Brazil “with respect to infringements related to order and security”.

It also cut a 100,000 franc fine imposed on the AFA for “its failure to comply with its obligations in relation to the preparation of and its participation in the match.”

Brazil finished top in the South American qualifying competition for the World Cup in Qatar later this year with Argentina second.

That order will not change, regardless of the outcome of the June 11 replay.

  • Qatar 2022: Owo Blow calls for caution over new Super Eagles’ invitees

Qatar 2022: Owo Blow calls for caution over new Super Eagles’ invitees

Felix Owolabi, a member of the glorious defunct 1980 Green Eagles’ set, has sounded a cautious note over the inclusion of new Super Eagles’ invitees for the a must-win World Cup knockout fixtures against the Black Stars of Ghana.

The ace midfielder and an Olympian made his views known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday while reacting to the list of invited players for the World Cup qualification match.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) released a 30-man provisional list to take on Ghana for the World Cup ticket.

The first leg of the double header is slated for March 25 in Cape Coast Stadium, Ghana, and the second leg would hold on March 29 at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abuja.

Notable on the list of invited players are new entrants: Leicester City Winger, Ademola Lookman and a former U-17 World Cup star, Akinkunmi Amoo, who were handed their first call-up alongside defender,Calvin Bassey; and forward, Emmanuel Dennis.

However, Owolabi, who holds a doctorate degree in Physical Education contended that while the invitation of the new players was a welcome development, the technical crew should exercise caution in rushing them to play during the crucial encounter against Ghana.

“We don’t have time, I suggest that we stick to the squad that we took to the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroun and see how we will fare.

“We should exercise caution in adding more players to the team; those calling for the inclusion of new players are football agents who don’t have the interest of Nigerian football at heart.

“The team that we took to the AFCON was good enough, they only need more time to gel while there may also be some technicality and tactical approaches to mould them.

“Having additional players looks good, but there is an established team already, there is nothing bad in adding to them, but we need to consider the time factor,” he said.

Owolabi fondly called `Owo Blow” in his hay days also said that players’ form in their respective clubs might not necessarily bring instant impact or success to the national team, adding that team bonding should be the key.

“It will be stupid of anybody to suggest that because a player is the best in Bundesliga or other leagues such a player will automatically win the Ghana match for us which is a crucial game. It should be a team work.

“From my experience in football, there is no player that can fit into such arrangements, because the excuse about players not fitting into a team is a fundamental problem of team bonding.

“Players such as myself and Segun Odegbami did not just fit into the national team like that just overnight or get automatic ticket, we had been in the team for a while and our successes were as a result of team work.

“We need to get the right people into the administration of football for it to succeed. We only need to look into the team that played in Cameroun and see the area at which we need to fortify,” he said.

  • 27 players arrive Falconets’ camp ahead of qualifiers for Costa Rica 2022

27 players arrive Falconets’ camp ahead of qualifiers for Costa Rica 2022

The Falconets’ Head Coach, Christopher Danjuma, on Tuesday said 27 of the invited 35 players have arrived at the national under-20 women’s football team camp in Abuja.

Danjuma told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that two foreign-based players —- one from Denmark and the other from England —- were also expected to join the camp shortly.

NAN reports that the camp was open ahead of the upcoming African Qualifiers for the 10th FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica from Aug. 10 to Aug. 28, 2022.

The coach explained that the invited players were mostly coming from clubs in the country’s leagues, with several coming from the under-17 cadre.

“Most of the players were taken from clubs which played in the NWFL Super Six and Aiteo Cup finals, and I think we are still picking the best of the best according to our ability,” he said.

Danjuma however noted that the players’ performance have been good. “We have a very young team, and our girls have been doing very well in their various leagues.

“These players are ready to work hard with determination and a display of talents that will make them reach the top of their career.”

He stated that his team was at the moment not facing any challenge. “The Federation is basically doing well. The accommodation is conducive, and so far there is no complaints yet from any of the players. They are well relaxed to bring out the best in them.

“Also, with the way we are going with the set of players called to camp, these are the set of players that we will develop as the competition keeps growing on, and they are the group of players that will be a revolution in Nigerian football,’’ Danjuma said.

He pointed out that the technical crew has like four weeks to train and camp the players and he and his colleagues would strive to achieve their aim.

“Our players are good. So, we will do our best to play to our strength. We will not underrate any country. But Nigeria has what it takes to come out victorious against other teams.

‘“We will start playing friendly matches as from Saturday.

“We are still deciding, to know which teams we are going to play against, but we are going to start intensifying efforts to play against the teams around the FCT,’’ the coach said.

NAN reports that the Falconets have drawn bye into the second round where they will face Central African Republic (CAR).

Nigeria have qualified for the World Cup nine times and have finished as runners-up on two occasions (2010 and 2014), and the quarter-finals four times (2004, 2006, 2008 and 2018).

They also finished fourth in 2012 and did not go past the group stage in 2002 and 2016.
