  • Prince Charles succeeds Queen Elizabeth II as King

Prince Charles succeeds Queen Elizabeth II as King

The longest-serving monarch in British history, Queen Elizabeth II has died “peacefully” on Thursday.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that Buckingham Palace confirmed the death of Queen Elizabeth II in a statement.

Queen Elizabeth II had been under medical supervision as doctors expressed “concerned for Her Majesty’s health.”

The announcement comes a day after the 96-year-old monarch cancelled a meeting of her Privy Council and was told to rest.

With Queen Elizabeth II’s death, Prince Charles would become king and his wife, Camilla, formerly the Duchess of Cornwall, will become the Queen Consort, a request made by Queen Elizabeth.

“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow,” the statement reads.

Recall that Charles was previously married to the late Princess Diana, mother of Prince Harry.

Prince Charles is 73. He is the oldest-recorded person to become a British monarch: King William IV was 64 when he was crowned in 1830.

Operation London Bridge, as the queen’s funeral plan is known, gets a military-style name in part because the military is heavily involved in organizing and carrying out many of the processions and ceremonies.

Details of Operation London Bridge first leaked in The Guardian in May 2017, describing what would happen during the 10-day period from the day after the death and the funeral at Westminster Abbey followed by interment in St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.

    • Day 1: At the moment of the sovereign’s death, her eldest son and heir, Prince Charles the Prince of Wales, instantly becomes Britain’s 42nd monarch since William the Conqueror in 1066. (The new king will likely pick Charles III as his reign name.)
    • The late monarch’s private secretary will call the prime minister on a secure line to say the code phrase, “London Bridge is down,” followed by a number “cascade” of similar calls to cabinet officials and other high-ranking officials in the United Kingdom and in the 15 Commonwealth countries where the British sovereign is head of state.
    • Day 2: The queen’s coffin will be transferred from the place of death to the throne room at Buckingham Palace overlooking the north-west corner of the Quadrangle interior courtyard.
    • Days 3-5: The new king will receive Parliament’s motion of condolence at Westminster Hall, then depart on a tour of the kingdom to meet his people.
    • Day 5: The procession of the coffin from Buckingham Palace to the Palace of Westminster will take place, followed by a service in Westminster Hall.
    • Days 6-9: The queen lies in state at Westminster Hall.
    • Day 10: The queen’s state funeral will be at Westminster Abbey.  The day will be declared a Day of National Mourning and two minutes of silence will be marked across the nation.

“My thoughts – and the thoughts of people across our United Kingdom – are with Her Majesty The Queen and her family at this time.”

Buckingham Palace said that the queen is under medical supervision at Balmoral after doctors became concerned for her health, BBC reported.

Queen Elizabeth’s family rush to side of ailing monarch

Family members rushed to be with Queen Elizabeth after doctors said they were concerned about the health of Britain’s 96-year-old monarch on Thursday and said she should remain under medical supervision.

The queen, Britain’s longest-reigning sovereign and the world’s oldest monarch, has been suffering from what Buckingham Palace has called “episodic mobility problems” since the end of last year.

“Following further evaluation this morning, The Queen’s doctors are concerned for Her Majesty’s health and have recommended she remain under medical supervision,” the palace said in a statement.

“The queen remains comfortable and at Balmoral.”

Her eldest son and heir Prince Charles and his wife Camilla have travelled to her Scottish home, Balmoral Castle, where she is staying, along with his eldest son Prince William, officials said.

Her other children – Anne, Andrew and Edward – were also on their way to the castle.

A spokesperson said Prince Harry and his wife Meghan, in Britain for a number of events, would also travel to Scotland.

“My prayers, and the prayers of people across the @churchofengland and the nation, are with Her Majesty The Queen today,” Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, said on Twitter.

Last October, Elizabeth spent a night in hospital and she has been forced to cut back on public engagements since then.

On Wednesday she cancelled a virtual meeting with senior ministers after being advised to rest by her doctors.

The previous day she had been pictured appointing Liz Truss as the country’s new prime minister at Balmoral.

A palace source played down speculation that the monarch had suffered a fall.

The longest reigning British Monarch, Queen of England tests positive for Covid-19.

The Queen, 95, has tested positive for coronavirus, Buckingham Palace has said.

The Queen is experiencing mild cold-like symptoms but expects to continue light duties at Windsor this week, the palace said, Sky News reports.

Prince Charles tested positive for COVID for the second time this month, with palace sources saying he had seen his mother a few days before then.

The announcement was made just a few weeks after the Queen, Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, reached her historic Platinum Jubilee of 70 years on the throne.

A statement by Buckingham Palace said: “Buckingham Palace confirm that The Queen has today tested positive for Covid

Queen Elizabeth proclaims Camilla next Queen Consort

British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II has decreed that Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, will be made Queen Consort when Charles is eventually crowned as King.

In a message marking the 70th anniversary of her reign, the Queen said it was her “sincere wish” that Camilla would have that title.

The Queen is the first British monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee.

She is spending her day privately on the Sandringham estate, with national celebrations to be held in June.

The Queen’s reign began when she was 25 years old, following the death of her father, George VI, on 6 February 1952.

The monarch said that, 70 years on, the day is one she remembers “as much for the death of my father, King George VI, as for the start of my reign”.

The 95-year-old said in a written message to the nation: “I would like to express my thanks to you all for your support. I remain eternally grateful for, and humbled by, the loyalty and affection that you continue to give me.”

The Jubilee is the monarch’s first without the Duke of Edinburgh, her husband of 73 years, who died last year.

She reflected on how much she had gained from support given “unselfishly” by Prince Philip and thanked the goodwill shown to her by “all nationalities, faiths and ages in this country”.

  • Barbados cuts ties with Queen Elizabeth II, becomes world’s newest republic

Barbados cuts ties with Queen Elizabeth II, becomes world’s newest republic

Barbados has become a republic, replacing the British monarch as its head of state and severing its last remaining colonial bonds nearly 400 years after the first English ships arrived at the Caribbean island.

The new republic was born to the cheers of hundreds of people lining Chamberlain Bridge in the capital, Bridgetown, at the stroke of midnight. A 21-gun salute fired as the national anthem of Barbados was played over a crowded Heroes Square.

Prince Charles, heir to the British throne, stood somberly as the royal standard was lowered and the new Barbados declared, a step republicans hope will spur discussion of similar proposals in other former British colonies where Queen Elizabeth II remains their sovereign.

After a dazzling display of Barbadian dance and music, complete with speeches celebrating the end of colonialism, Sandra Mason was sworn in as Barbados’s first president in the shadow of Barbados’s parliament.

Mason was elected last month by a joint session of the country’s House of Assembly and Senate

“Full stop this colonial page,” Winston Farrell, a Barbadian poet told the ceremony. “Some have grown up stupid under the Union Jack, lost in the castle of their skin.”

“It is about us, rising out of the cane fields, reclaiming our history,” he said. “End all that she mean, put a Bajan there instead.”

Supporters of the transition say removing the British queen as Barbados’s head of state sends a powerful message.

“Tonight’s the night!” read the front-page headline of Barbados’ Daily Nation newspaper.

Meanwhile, the new republic has declared Rihanna a national hero.

Prime Minister Mia Mottley announced that the 33-year-old Barbadian musician and entrepreneur would be conferred with the honour of National Hero of Barbados to cheers during a ceremony held overnight on Monday in the capital, Bridgetown, to mark the political transition.

Rihanna, a billionaire according to Forbes, was called up before the crowds to be congratulated by Mottley, the leader of Barbados’s republican movement.

“May you continue to shine like a diamond and bring honour to your nation by your works, by your actions,” Mottley told Rihanna, a reference to her 2012 chart-topping single “Diamonds”.

Mottley said the artist had commanded “the imagination of the world through the pursuit of excellence with her creativity, her discipline, and above all else, her extraordinary commitment to the land of her birth”.

Barbados will remain a republic within the Commonwealth, a grouping of 54 countries across Africa, Asia, the Americas and Europe.

But its withdrawal from the monarchy will bring the number of Commonwealth realms – countries that continue to have the queen as their head of state – to 15, including Australia, Canada, Jamaica, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.

The last country to renounce the Crown was the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius in 1992.

Biden, Queen Elizabeth to meet in person after G7 Summit

Queen Elizabeth II will hold her first in-person meeting with a foreign leader in over a year when she hosts US President Joe Biden on June 13 after he attends a G7 summit, Buckingham Palace announced Thursday.

It said the 95-year-old monarch will meet the president and First Lady Jill Biden at Windsor Castle west of London, where she has largely lived since the coronavirus pandemic first swept Britain in March 2020.

The Queen, who has received her two doses of Covid-19 vaccination, has been holding the vast majority of meetings virtually, including audiences with foreign ambassadors.

It will be her first meeting in person with a foreign head of state since the pandemic hit, and her most high-profile official engagement since presiding over the state opening of parliament on May 11.

That was the Queen’s first public appearance since the funeral of her husband Prince Philip. He died on April 9, aged 99.

In a statement of condolence then, the Bidens paid tribute to the late Duke of Edinburgh. “His legacy will live on not only through his family, but in all the charitable endeavours he shaped,” they wrote.

The meeting with the president and first lady will come the day after the Queen’s official birthday, and will follow the three-day summit of Group of Seven leaders in Cornwall, southwest England.

The G7 gathering starts Biden’s first foreign tour since he took office in January. He will also make stops at a NATO summit in Brussels and in Geneva, for a June 16 summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

With the exception of Lyndon B. Johnson, the Queen has met every US president during her 69-year reign. Donald Trump staged a controversial state visit to Britain in June 2019.

The official birthday celebration is normally marked by a military parade called “Trooping the Colour”, featuring hundreds of personnel from Britain’s most prestigious regiments.

But it has been cancelled for a second year, owing to the pandemic.

Queen Elizabeth gives sex toy company award for exceptional growth

The Queen Elizabeth II of England has honoured the biggest sex toy company in the United Kingdom, Lovehoney, with an ‘Award for Enterprise’ for ‘outstanding continuous growth’ over the last six years. The firm’s overseas sales grew by 365 per cent to £56m from £12m in 2015.

According to metro.co.uk, the award will allow the company to use the Queen’s Award emblem in advertising, marketing and on packaging for five years, and is considered a symbol of quality and success.

The Chief Commercial Officer, Lovehoney, Debbie Bond, said, “We are thrilled to have received official recognition from the Queen. Her Majesty has been a wonderful supporter of Lovehoney as we have grown into being the world’s leading sexual wellness brand.

“Royal patronage will help us to create more jobs at our Bath headquarters and in our international offices and spread the sexual happiness message globally. The Queen is the UK’s greatest trade ambassador and royal approval shows, again, how mainstream shoppers and retail outlets are embracing sexual wellness products as never before and appreciating their importance in improving overall well-being – a particularly important message as we come out of lockdown after a stressful year living with the pandemic.”

The award has been described as ‘the highest honor for business success’. This is the second time the retailer has received a Queen’s Award, after being given the International Trade accolade five years ago. The winners ― including Lovehoney founders, Richard Longhurst and Neal Slateford ― joined the Queen and Prince Philip at a garden party at Buckingham Palace.

Lovehoney is the UK’s biggest online adult retailer. After first launching from Mr Longhurst’s bedroom, it now has eight other websites globally, including the US, Australia, France, Germany, Spain, EU, Canada and New Zealand.

Bond added that the company has a customer base of 2.2 million people and 300 people staff.

An advertisement from the company in 2013 became the first-ever commercial to say ‘sex toys’ on British television.

The official rights given to it to make all Fifty Shades of Grey pleasure products boosted its global expansion. The company has created several ranges with E. L. James, author of the trilogy, including new collections to celebrate the books’ 10th birthday this year.
