Police raid Abuja hotel, arrest manager for alleged abuse, endangerment of minors

The Gender Unit of the Nigerian Police Force Criminal Investigation Department, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), on Friday, raided Ignobis Hotels, Gado Nasco Road in Kubwa, Abuja, for alleged abuse, endangerment of minors.

The raid was led by Inspector Ossai Ojobo, an Investigation Police Officer, along with officials of the Social Development Secretarial (SDS), FCT Administration and representatives of a non-governmental organisation.

After the raid, the Hotel Manager, Mr Akbueze Chidi and a restaurant operator in the hotel, Ms Priscilla Abuyah, were arrested and taken to the Force CID for questioning and further investigation.

The raid followed a petition by Human Rights Agenda Network (HRAN), an NGO, to the Social Welfare Department of the SDS, alleging that the hotel was harbouring minors and exposing them to sexual exploitation.

Mrs Joy Omokivie, the SDS Officer in charge of the case, told NAN, that the SDS channelled the petition to the Gender Unit of the Force CID to investigate the matter.

Omokivie added that the hotel was classified as a brothel by residents, where young girls, including underaged girls were being brought in for sex.

She said that in the petition, HRAN had alleged that a 12-year-old minor and her younger brother, 4, were staying at the hotel with a woman, purported to be their mother.

She added that after some investigations, the 12-year-old girl was rescued and currently in the custody of the Social Welfare Department, “while the young boy is still with the mother.”

According to her, the raid was part of an ongoing investigation to determine the veracity of the allegations and if found to be true, rescue the minors and prosecute the culprits.

HRAN had in the petition accused the woman, Mrs Immanuela Austyn-Araki, a Bolt driver of abandoning the children in the hotel in the morning, leaving them to fend for themselves.

The NGO claimed that the children eat mostly snacks and noodles until she returns late at night or the following morning.

HRAN added that its investigation revealed that the woman lodged in the hotel with the children for more than two years, exposing them to all kinds of sexual conducts by other adults lodging in the hotel.

The group said that the girl was allowed access to the internet and accessing sites not suitable for underaged children, adding that the girl had an account on Tik-Tok where she uploads adult related contents.

According to the group, men, including the hotel owner, pay regular visits to the room occupied by the minors and their mother, whenever the mother is not around.

HRAN also expressed suspicion that the woman may be involved in child trafficking, alleging that there were under aged girls in the hotel premises working as commercial sex workers.

The NGO, thereafter, asked the police to investigate the matter with a view to save the endangered child and bring the culprits to book.

However, after reading the petition at the Force CID, the manager of the hotel and the restaurant operator declined making any response except in the presence of their lawyer.

Meanwhile, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Hotel, Mr Eze Obasi, refuted the allegation, saying “I am a good Christian and a traditional title holder in my community.

“As such, I cannot be a party to sexual exploitation, abuse, or endangerment of underage girls in my hotel.

“All I know is that the woman in question was being maltreated by her husband and she came to the hotel with her children to seek refuge from her abusive husband.

“This complaint has been brought before me by four different groups and it has been settled.

“I do not understand why police officers will still come to the hotel to embarrass my clients in the name of police search for minors,” he said.

The raid that ended around 8:30 p.m., the young minor and the mother were not found at the hotel.

  • N400bn: APC PCC uncovers online platform that claims EFCC raided Tinubu’s home

N400bn: APC PCC uncovers online platform that claims EFCC raided Tinubu’s home

The APC Presidential Campaign Campaign (APCPCC), says it has uncovered an online platform set up to disseminate false and malicious information about Sen. Bola Tinubu, the party’s presidential candidate.

Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Director Media and Publicity, APC PCC, said this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.

“The APC PCC has stumbled on a rogue website, www. Igbotimesmagazine.online, out to disseminate false and malicious information about Sen. Bola Tinubu the APC presidential candidate

“In its latest false news, the site claimed that some EFCC operatives, on the order of President Muhammadu Buhari, raided the underground home of Tinubu.

“It claimed that N400 billion of the new naira notes was recovered from there,” Onanuga said.

He added that though the story which notably lacked the essential when, where and how ingredients of any news story, went viral.

He further added that the EFCC had since issued a formal statement on the purported raid by its men at Tinubu’s home, saying it was a fake story.

Onanuga, therefore, called on the public to disregard the story.

He added that the dubious website, in its fake story, claimed investigations was ongoing to identify the bank manager that made such money available to Tinubu.

He said the online publication admitted its absurdity when it wrote that the money recovered in Tinubu’s underground house was equivalent of the entire money printed for the whole Nigeria by the CBN.

“So, if Tinubu alone has all the money printed by Godwin Emefiele’s CBN, how do you account for the billions distributed by the apex bank to all the banks, including operators of POS,” Onanuga wondered.

He said the site, which on Twitter and Facebook appeared to have links with the Labour Party, went further in another post, to claim that President Buhari ordered the arrest of the bank manager that made the phantom money available to Tinubu.

He recalled that in a previous post two weeks ago, the site claimed that an angry mob blocked N3 billion of new notes heading to Tinubu’s house.

“Other fake news on the site included one that claimed the Federal Government planned to borrow money from kidnappers in Kaduna because they have more money than our country.

“It credited the misleading news to Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information and Culture.

“We want to warn Nigerians to be wary of every piece of news emanating from the site, and its social media handles.

“There will be many of such sites as some candidates become desperate to win the election at all costs,” he said.

This, he said, was in fulfilment of some rogue and rigged opinion polls by ANAP Foundation and Nextier, shunning all decent norms and rules.

Onanuga said the igbotimesmagazine. online, with its affiliated social media handles, existed for no good of the country.

He said it was out to misinform and mislead Nigerians and disseminate malicious information Tinubu in the run up to the Feb. 25 election.

“We are not surprised that the opposition has embarked on sponsoring a website and social media handles, whose owners are unknown and which lacks physical address or even an email.

“We urge the authorities to fish out the people behind the site, that is recklessly dishing out fake news, before more damage is done to our polity.”

NDLEA reveal why skit maker D-General was arrested, releases his mugshot

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has revealed why Sunday Martins popularly known as D-General was arrested.

Spokesman of the NDLEA, Femi Babafemi disclosed that the comedian was arrested over drug-related issues in the early hours of Wednesday, January 12.

Babafemi said the narcotics officers who acted on credible intelligence, stormed a drug joint at Orchid Estate, Lekki area of Lagos state, where three suspects were arrested with illicit drugs including 200 sachets of 225mg Tramadol and 1.5kilograms of cannabis sativa.

It was also alleged that during the operation, some persons including the suspected dealer ran away with bags suspected to contain exhibits. A trail allegedly showed they ran into the residence of the comedian.

The agency further claimed that the “video trending on social media was the moment the suspect and his friends decided to disrupt the bid to conduct a search of the house.” It was also alleged that he admitted to ownership of drugs recovered from his house.

    Statement reads:

Skit maker, D-General, 3 others arrested in NDLEAs Lagos raids

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, in the early hours of today, Wednesday 12th January arrested a skit maker, Sunday Joshua, popularly known on social media as De-General, following the raid of a notorious drug joint at Orchid Estate, Lekki area of Lagos state.

Acting on credible intelligence, narcotic officers stormed the drug joint in the estate, where three suspects were arrested with illicit drugs including 200 sachets of 225mg Tramadol and 1.5kilograms of cannabis sativa. In the course of the operation, some persons including the suspected dealer ran away with bags suspected to contain exhibits.

A trail showed they ran into a house located at 2B Saula Akinlolu way, Orchid estate, which is the residence of 22-year-old Sunday Joshua (aka De General). The young men started to make noise to prevent a search. The operatives introduced themselves as officers of NDLEA and submitted themselves for search before entry. This was done and a search was conducted.

The search led to the recovery of drug exhibits including cannabis sativa; Tramadol 225mg, and some paraphernalia for drug use. This was after the suspect had requested to record on video the search, which the officers out of sense of civility allowed. The video trending on social media was the moment the suspect and his friends decided to disrupt the bid to conduct a search of the house.

In his confessional statement in custody, the suspect admitted ownership of the drugs recovered from his house.

Raid on Justice Odili’s residence: There are 36 Attorney Generals in Nigeria, I can’t be the one he is referring to, Malami distances self again from suspect claiming to be working for him

The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has again denied any involvement in the controversial siege on the home of a Judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Mary Odili.

He also spoke about a suspect – Lawrence Ajodo, who said he had worked previously with the AGF.

The minister stated this on Sunday when he appeared as a guest on a Television programme.

“I have never given him a single case and if I have given him 29 cases, let him show the evidence of the engagement,” Malami said, adding: “I have never seen this man on earth, God knows and I believe there are certain (not only) criminal undertones, perhaps maybe some other undertones, by people who think that by hook or by crook the AG must be a target of aggression one way or the other”.

Malami further claimed that the suspect is not under the pay record of his ministry and even if he was, he would not carry out operations that are outside the scope of the ministry.

“Government business is regulated through due processes and procedures. So, you cannot be seen to be operating as a department under the office of the Attorney General and then operating outside the scope and regulations of the law.

“So, you can see clearly, the man said he was asked by the Attorney General to carry out that task. Ask him, which of the Attorneys-General and on account of which formal engagement?

“There are 36 Attorneys General across the nation inclusive of the office of the Attorney General of the Federation. So, if he said he has been sent by the Attorney General, the next point is to ask him, who is the Attorney General”.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that Justice Odili’s home was raided on October 29. But questions about who initiated the incident have remained unanswered.

Initially, there were reports that the EFCC had gone to execute a search warrant, as part of investigations into her husband, former Governor of Rivers State, Peter Odili.

But the commission, through its Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, denied the allegation, saying “none of our operatives was there”.

This, then raised further questions as to who gave the orders for the said siege.

One of the key suspects had fingered Malami as the one who ordered the raid but the AGF in an earlier istatement denied having any involvement in it.

“Mr Ajodo’s case is that of a drowning man scavenging for a dying partner,” a statement signed by a spokesperson in the office of the AGF, Umar Gwandu, had said.

Justice Odili: Malami speaks after suspect who staged raid confessed working for him

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has distanced himself from a suspect arrested over the siege of Justice Mary Odili’s home.

The suspect, Lawrence Ajodo, was paraded by the police on Thursday alongside 13 others.

He claimed to work as a consultant for the office of the AGF.

However, the police said their investigations revealed that “there is no involvement at all” of the officials of the office of the AGF in the raid.

Ojodu and the other suspects, the police said, “are loose cannons” who forged “different documents” and carried out their “crimes under false representations.”

According to a statement signed by a spokesperson in the office of the AGF, Umar Gwandu, Mr Ajodu’s case is that “of a drowning man scavenging for a dying partner.”

“The attention of the Office of the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice has been drawn to a confession of a suspect during interrogation in the investigation of the recent invasion of the residence of the highly respected Justice of the Supreme Court; Justice Mary Peter Odili,” the statement said.

“With all the competent, high level professionals and capable human resources available at the disposal of the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, it only takes the imagination of the evil minds to assume or think that the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice will descend so low to engaging a quack or fake police officer to serve as his consultant.

“This is a case of a drowning man scavenging for a dying partner. We are happy to note that investigation has commenced to unravel the circumstances and personalities behind the invasion and sponsored campaign of calumny against the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice.

“It is our desire and we hope that the investigation would also disclose those after the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, those dragging his personality, his name and his exalted office in the dirty politics of disrepute. This is an orchestrated attempt to stir unnecessary controversies and Public apprehension.

“We asked the suspect to present documents of engagements where he worked as a consultant to the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, whether in past or now.

“Consultant for what? Which activity or assignment? When was he engaged? What were the terms of references for the alleged consultancy service? When was he engaged? Where was he engaged? Which worked has he executed for the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation and the Ministry of Justice? For what duration? And for how much?

“We boldly and unequivocally challenge the fake consultant/police officer to come out with answers or responses to these questions to the general public.

“The Honourable Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice superintends over and respects the rule of law who will not do anything to undermine the sanctity of his office and that that entire judiciary and Justice sector.”

The management of ThisDay Newspapers has denied any link whatsoever with a journalist arrested and paraded on Thursday amongst 13 other suspects believed to have perpetrated the raid on the Abuja home of Supreme Court Justice, Mary Odili last month.

The Newspaper, in a press lease signed by its Managing Editor, Bolaji Adebiyi explained that the said journalist identified as Stanley Nkwazema resigned from the organisation as a sports correspondent over 15 years and has only been obliged the priviledge of publishing articles in the newspaper like other ex-staff.

    THISDAY PRESS RELEASE

DISCLAIMER: STANLEY NKWAZEMA IS NOT OUR STAFF/CONTRIBUTING EDITOR

The attention of the management of THISDAY NEWSPAPERS has been drawn to the news making the rounds that Mr. Stanley Nkwazema, one of those suspected to have invaded the home of Justice Mary Odili claimed to be a staff and Contributing Editor of THISDAY.

Contrary to his claim, Mr. Nkwazema is neither a Staff of THISDAY nor a Contributing Editor. He was a Sports Correspondent and resigned more than 15 years ago.

However, occasionally, he, like hundreds of other readers of the newspaper, sends for publication articles and analyses and is usually obliged, a privilege THISDAY gives to some of its ex-staff. That does not in any way make him a staff and contributing Editor of THISDAY.

Since his resignation, THISDAY had at no time contracted Mr. Nkwazema to investigate any story, and we know nothing of his alleged investigation of a story leading to the raid of the residence of Hon. Justice Odili.

The police authorities and the general public should, therefore, note that Mr. Nkwazema, whatever may be his involvement in this matter, was not acting on behalf of THISDAY in any shape or form.

    Thank you.

  • Odili: Raid on second most senior Supreme Court Justice’s residence is ‘executive infraction’ targeted against judiciary – SANs

Odili: Raid on second most senior Supreme Court Justice’s residence is ‘executive infraction’ targeted against judiciary – SANs

Some senior lawyers from the South East region have condemned the raid on a justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Mary Odili, by some security operatives.

In a statement on Saturday, the legal practitioners described the attack, said to have been carried out on Friday, as an attempt to intimidate the judiciary.

“Concerned Senior Advocates of Nigeria of South-eastern Extraction condemn in strong terms the unlawful raid on October 29, 2021, of the residence of Hon Justice Mary Peter Odili, the second most senior Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria,” they said in the communique signed by three of the senior advocates, Professor Ilochi Okafor, Mr Etigwe Uwa, and Mr Chijioke Okoli.

”The raid said to have been orchestrated by some security agencies, is yet another frontal attack on the independence and integrity of the Judiciary. We are worried that this event is part of a series of events aimed at systematically intimidating and emasculating the Judiciary.

“We recall similar raids by the EFCC, the DSS and other security operatives on the premises of Justices of the Supreme Court in 2016, and residence of some Judges of the Federal High Court, in Abuja. Despite these security agencies publicly stating the raids were on mistaken identity of the premises, no one has been arrested and prosecuted for such brash criminal attack on the judiciary.”

The senior advocates stated that one of such raids took place in a courtroom at the Federal High Court while a judge was sitting.

According to them, consistent attacks on the judiciary are clearly in breach of the constitutional protection of judges and the judiciary.

“In particular, Section 158 and Paragraph 21 Part 1 of the Third Schedule of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 clearly empower the National Judicial Council with the responsibility to handle all complaints and matters relating to judicial officers.

“This position of the law has been confirmed in the case of NGANJIWA V FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA (2018) 4 NWLR (Pt. 1609) 301 where the Court of Appeal stated that ‘If any judicial officer commits professional misconduct within the scope of his duty and is investigated, arrested and subsequently prosecuted by security agents, without a formal complaint/report to the NJC, it will be a usurpation of the latter’s constitutionally guaranteed powers under Section 158 and Paragraph 21 Part 1 of the Third Schedule, thereby inhibiting the NJC from carrying out its disciplinary control over erring judicial officers as clearly provided by the Constitution. … it is only when the NJC has given a verdict and handed over such judicial officer (removing his toga of judicial powers) to the prosecuting authority that he may be investigated and prosecuted by the appropriate security agencies’; we re-emphasis that it amounts to an executive infraction on the judicial independence to continue to harass, intimidate and humiliate judges.”

In view of the doctrine of the independence of the judiciary, the senior lawyers stressed that no security agency or prosecuting authority has the power to investigate, arrest, or prosecute a sitting judicial officer without first referring the matter to the NJC, and await the directive of the Council.

They, therefore, called on President Muhammadu Buhari to direct investigation of all security agents and others who played any role in the raid and ensure those found culpable were made to face the full wrath of the law.
