2023 Election: We owe Nigerians violence – free campaigns – APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) says  political parties and their candidates owe Nigerians a duty to ensure  violence-free and peaceful electioneering processes ahead of the 2023 general elections.
Mr Felix Morka, APC National Publicity Secretary said this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja,  while reacting to the disruption at the rally of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kaduna on Oct. 17.
The APC scribe said although the event was wrong, it was regrettably self-inflicted.
“As a party, we abhor and condemn any and all forms of violence and interference in the activities or events of any political party.
“Every party is entitled to conduct their legitimate activities in peace and security, and every party has a right to equal protection of the law.
“Perpetrators of disruptive and other acts of violence must be brought to justice,” he said, adding that the PDP had no one but itself to blame for the violent incident at its Kaduna rally.
Morka alledged that the incident was  simply a matter of a rented crowd that went irate when the party’s rent-a-crowd managers allegedly disappeared with funds meant to pay for the rented crowd.
He said rather than hold its head down in shame for the poor and distasteful showing at its Kaduna rally, the PDP sought to blame the APC for its own gross acts and misconduct.
“To be clear, the APC has no hand in the attack as  alleged by the PDP, we have no reason to be perturbed by the rally.
“As Africa’s largest political party, bolstered by the remarkable accomplishments of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, with a vibrant future led by our visionary presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“We cannot, in any way, be unnerved by any political party or presidential candidate, certainly, not by the PDP.
“If anything, it was the PDP that scheduled and conducted its rally in Kaduna on the same day that our candidate was scheduled to make an appearance at the Arewa Dialogue,” he said.
Morka noted that a mature and well governed campaign would had avoided an apparent conflict of having two major events take place in the same city on same day.
He said haven made their pitch at the dialogue, it was only fair that the APC candidate be allowed to do same, adding that such civil gesture was, however, uncharacteristic of the PDP.
He assured that the APC-led government remained committed to the highest levels of civility, transparency and respect for the rule of law in its  political engagements.
This, he said, was especially given the credible, free and fair elections it superintended in Anambra, Ekiti and Osun.
“That this government also mid-wifed the massive reform of the Electoral Act, and introduced the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) speaks volume to its commitment to democratic consolidation in our country.
“We urge security agencies to probe the unfortunate Kaduna incident with a view to unmasking and prosecuting the culprits behind it.
“It is imperative that political parties eschew violence and play strictly by the rules of engagement, going forward,” he stressed.
Morka enjoined all parties and candidates to subscribe to issue-based campaigns and observe applicable ethical standards and best practices.
“We owe Nigerians a duty to ensure a violence-free and peaceful electioneering process ahead of the 2023 general elections,” the APC scribe maintained.
Recall that the PDP in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr Debo Ologunagba on Monday, said that  the disruption at its Kaduna rally was carried out by heavily armed hoodlums,  allegedly sponsored by the APC.

The PDP scribe described the attack as reprehensible, saying it further exposed the desperation of the APC.

Labour Party disowns campaign rally timetable

The Labour Party (LP) on Monday disowned a campaign rally timetable being circulated in the media.

Mr Arabambi Abayomi, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, said in a statement in Abuja that the timetable was neither authorised by the LP leadership nor its presidential candidate.

“Labour Party’s attention has been drawn to a purported OBI -DATTI presidential campaign rallies timetable in circulation.

“I hereby deny the authenticity of this campaign council programme, as Labour Party’s leadership is not aware of it,” he added.

According to Abayomi, the party’s presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi has also not authorised anyone to issue any campaign programme.

“Likewise, no one from the Campaign Council has sought the nod of the party’s leadership over the same subject matter,” the LP spokesman said.

He therefore called on Nigerians and the media to disregard  the timetable in its entirety.

  • Peter Obi’s supporters barred from holding rally at Lekki Toll Gate

Peter Obi’s supporters barred from holding rally at Lekki Toll Gate

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos State has barred supporters of Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party from holding their obi-dient movement rally at the Lekki Toll Gate.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the court, however, ruled that the supporters can march through the Lekki Toll Gate to access Falomo Bridge and other venues at which the rally plans to meet.

Justice Daniel Osiagor in his ruling also directed the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, and the Lagos State Police Commissioner, Abiodun Alabi, to ensure compliance.

A motion for injunction brought by 10 plaintiffs asked the court to, among others, restrain the Labour Party, its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, one Julius Abure and their loyalists from holding the rally at the Lekki Toll Gate.

A preliminary objection filed by the defendants seeking to stop the court from hearing the motion on the grounds that it lacked jurisdiction could however not be entertained as all parties to the suit had not been served.

The court adjourned hearing of the substantive suit to November 4, 2022.

In the suit, 10 plaintiffs are Adedotun Ajulo Esq., Salamatu Suleiman Lewi Esq., Hakeem Ijaduola, Esq., Ogunbona Akinpelu Esq., Owolabi K. Oluwasegun, Esq., Mogbojuri Kayode Esq., Wuyep Mantim Nadom Esq., Dimimu Mabel, Esq., Kolawole Salami, Esq. and Mr. Wale Abe Lawrence.

The 1st to 10th defendants are Obi, LP, Baba-Ahmed, Abure, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Commissioner of Police (Lagos State Command), Director-General (Department of State Services), Lekki Concession Company (LCC) Limited, Attorney-General of Lagos State and The Governor of Lagos State.

In the substantive suit, the plaintiffs are arguing among other things that a repeat or celebration of the “infamous” EndSARS protest of 2020 under the political guise of “#Obidatti23 Forward Ever Rally” will cause a breakdown of peace and will result in post-traumatic stress disorder for them and the public.

  • Peter Obi’s group overwhelmed by support in Abuja rally

Peter Obi’s group overwhelmed by support in Abuja rally

Prof Owojecho Omoha, Director General of the Obi-dient Movement, Nigeria has said the movement is overwhelmed by the mammoth crowd witnessed at its rally in Abuja, the federal capital territory (FCT).

Omoha made this known as supporters of the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, popularly known as ‘Obidients’ held a rally in the FCT, marching en masse from the Unity Fountain to City Gate in solidarity with Obi’s presidential bid.

“The rally in the  FCT is a microscope of the entire Nigeria and the mammoth crowd that we witnessed here today is unprecedented of any other rally that has taken place.

“This gives the indication that people from all walks of life that are in Abuja have actually taken their decision for good governance and a better Nigeria.

“Peter Obi is just the symbol of that agreement and as we move on to the flag off of campaigns across the country on Sept.28, that is when Nigerians even at the grassroots will get to know that really, Nigerians are yearning for a change.

“This actually concretise everybody’s resolution; you must not know Peter Obi, the ideal of  which we are fighting is that of Nigeria and it belongs to all of us,” he said.

Some of them who spoke during the rally vowed to drive the “obedient” to victory come 2023 General Elections. They said the rally was a test run of what they would be doing as campaign  begins on Sept.28.

Mr Victor Tunde, a member of the group said the support for Labour Party was a support for youths to take over the affairs of the nation to drive the desired change and development they had been crazing for.

“This massive crowd here today, shows that youths are ready ,we are ready to take over in every  area especially politically, we have our voter cards and we will use it to decide our leader ,”he said

Mrs Ngozi Uzor, a trader and supporter of the state Obidient movement, said she closed her shop to come out in solidarity of the movement, adding that market women were ready to work for obi.

“I have been a trader for some time now ,I watched how the price of a bag of rice rose from N7,500 to N16,000 and now it is N30,000 and above .

“This is too much, prices of things are so high now in the market and people are suffering; it is time we changed this for the good of the nation.”

Mr Usman Abdulahi ,a teacher and a supporter of the movement said supporting Obi was natural because of the numerous plans he has for the nation.

“Nigeria is faced with many challenges from insecurity to unemployment and many other things; previous leaders have tried to solve the problems but they are still there.

“So it is high time we tried a younger person with the technological and economic know how to drive sustainable economic development in Nigeria.”

Peter Obi on his twitter handle wrote “From Kano, I am watching the OBIdients gathered in Abuja and exercising their Constitutional rights to peaceful assembly. I salute you all.

“I appreciate you all. God bless you all and God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria. -PO”.

Highlights of the rally was the wedding ceremony of a couple who joined the movement as a way of showing their solidarity for Obi.

Drama in Calabar, the Cross River State capital as heavily armed operatives sealed off the Calabar Sport Club venue of PDP flag off campaign rally in the state.

The cordon by the police have upstaged the inauguration of the PDP campaign committee, who are made up of over 1, 000 members, that are supposed to be deployed to their various wards and polling units to embark on aggressive campaigns to sell their candidates – Chief Mike Usibe for Ogoja/Yala federal constituency and Dr Effiom Ekeng Edet for Akpabuyo State House of Assembly.

Expected dignitaries at the rally are Governors Nyesom Wike of Rivers, Governor Udom Emanuel of Akwa-Ibom and Samuel Ortom of Benue State. While Senators Gershom Bassey, Sen. Sandy Onor, Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe, Rt Hons Essien Ayi, Eta Mbora and Daniel Asuquo were also expected to grace the event.

Other party stalwarts that would be at the rally, tagged ‘operation-deliver-PDP’ include former governors Donald Duke and Liyel Imoke, zonal leaders, chapter and ward leaders.

It was gathered that as early as 7:00am, a team of security operatives numbering about one hundred and comprising of the army, civil defence and policemen stormed Calabar Sports Club, in 25 Hilux vans and one Armoured Personnel Carrier

The leader of the team on arrival threatened hundreds of PDP faithful to vacate the premises or face the wrath of the law, but they resisted the order to leave, stressing that they were given due approval by the police authority in the state.

Despite the order, hundreds of PDP supporters were still trooping into the place through the emergency gates, while some were seen erecting banners and pasting posters of their various candidates for the by-election and the three expected governors.

The party’s supporters were shouting “leave us alone to hold our event. This is democracy”.

But some of the security operatives who spoke under condition of anonymity, condemned the clampdown, describing it as capable of causing political tension in the state.

In a telephone interview, the Cross River State Police Commissioner, Aminu Alhassan, confirmed that he deployed his men to cardon off the venue of PDP rally, saying it is because of security report.

He said: “I sent the security to avoid breakdown of law and order in the state. Two big parties cannot hold events the same day, so that they wont cause problem”.

“So, I had to stop the PDP own and allow APC own. PDP can hold their own tomorrow please.”

When asked which of the parties first applied for approval to hold event today, the police boss said “both applied and he gave them all approval but that the APC Youth Summit has been having their activities and today is the main day”.
