Werner reveals Premier League coach who gave him headstart

Chelsea star Timo Werner has said that Ralph Hasenhuttl helped develop him into the world-class forward he is today and is looking forward to a reunion with the Southampton boss.

Both forward and coach arrived at RB Leipzig in the summer of 2016, and while Werner remained for four years, Hasenhuttl departed after just a couple of seasons.

The 53-year-old, however, had a defining influence on Werner’s career, having talked the young forward into switching to Leipzig from Stuttgart.

“I talked a lot to Hasenhuttl before moving to Leipzig,” he told Chelsea’s official website . “He’s a very nice guy, very jokey, and from the first time we spoke to each other it was a good relationship.

“Leipzig was the next step for me, a different team with different possibilities. It was important for me when I left my hometown to be with a manager with a good idea of football and a good personality.

“He taught me a lot about pressing, and switching from defence to offence very fast when we win the ball back. That was really interesting and helped me a lot in my game. It gave me space for my movements and my strengths.”

Southampton beat Huddersfield as Hasenhuttl earns second straight win

Southampton won for the second consecutive week to keep Huddersfield Town in the relegation zone after a fifth straight defeat.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side were 2-0 up at the break thanks to Nathan Redmond’s cool strike and a Danny Ings penalty.

The hosts improved after the break and halved the deficit through Philip Billing’s swerving, long-range effort.

But 18-year-old substitute Michael Obafemi’s first Premier League goal sealed the win for the Saints.

On the back of Southampton’s first back-to-back wins since April 2017, the south coast side move one place up the table into 16th place.

Huddersfield, with just four goals scored at home so far this season, remain in 19th place and are without injured top scorer Aaron Mooy until February.

EPL: Southampton name Ralph Hasenhuttl as new manager

Former RB Leipzig boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has been appointed Southampton manager on a two-and-a-half-year deal.

Southampton sacked Mark Hughes on Monday, eight months after he took charge of the club, with Saints 18th in the Premier League table.

Austrian Hasenhuttl, 51, has been out of work since leaving Leipzig in May, ending a two-year spell at the club.

“As soon as we met, Ralph’s enthusiasm for football was contagious,” said Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger.

“His hunger to take on a new and challenging job in the Premier League was evident. In our discussions, he quickly aligned himself with the values and the vision of the club.”

Hasenhuttl led Leipzig to a second-place finish in the Bundesliga in his first season in charge, after taking over following their promotion from the second tier.

The former Ingolstadt manager guided Leipzig to sixth in the German top-flight last season but left after failing to agree a contract extension.

He will officially take over on Thursday with first team assistant coach Kelvin Davis taking charge for Wednesday’s game against Tottenham at Wembley.

“This manager change offers us a fresh start and, very quickly, Ralph emerged as our ideal candidate,” Krueger added.

“As a coach, he embodies the passion, structure, communication skill set, work ethic and appetite for growth that we strive for in our Southampton way.

“The quick, smooth and seamless negotiation process underlines the character of the person that he is.”
