What Rangnick told Man Utd players after Watford draw

Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick says his players should’ve scored in their 0-0 draw with Watford.

Rangnick says he and his staff gave the players enough to find a goal in the game.

He explained, “We did everything apart from scoring. We have to take the result, it is difficult to win the game. We were in full control for almost the whole game, they had hardly any counter attacks apart from the last five minutes. Apart from that, we were in total control of the game.

“We had enough chances. In the first half we had four clear opportunities that normally would have been enough to score one or two goals. In the second half there were similar. It is about efficiency, about being clinical in front of goal and this is not for the first time unfortunately but apart from that we were in true control of the game, dominated the game.

“Our job as coaches is to help the team create enough chances. If we only had two or three opportunities in the game we could ask ourselves, well what can we do to create more chances but I think the number of clear chances we had today has to be enough to win a game like this.”

  • Rangnick in fresh crisis as Ronaldo, Maguire clash over Man Utd captaincy

Rangnick in fresh crisis as Ronaldo, Maguire clash over Man Utd captaincy

Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Maguire are entangled in a power struggle over the Manchester United captaincy, the UK Sun reports.

It is understood interim manager Ralph Rangnick, Ronaldo and Maguire have had conversations about the England defender relinquishing the armband for the rest of the season.

This is to take the pressure off Maguire as he wrestles with his own loss of form.

But the former Leicester City man is reluctant to do that, because he fears he might lose the captaincy on a permanent basis.

Rangnick has also requested that Ronaldo mentor the young players within the squad, which is understood to have led to further friction with Maguire.

Maguire is said to feel increasingly undermined by Ronaldo’s huge influence within the dressing-room, particularly with the younger players.

There is now a growing belief within the Old Trafford dressing-room that it is inevitable Ronaldo will replace Maguire – who has been struggling for form – as captain.

The reason why Man Utd sacked Solskjaer – Rangnick

Manchester United interim manager, Ralf Rangnick admits Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked over concerns the team would fail to qualify for the Champions League this season.

United have dropped 11 points from their last 24 and fallen to sixth in the Premier League, with West Ham still fourth while eighth-placed Tottenham and sixth-placed Arsenal each have two games in hand. Wolves have also entered the running and are now seventh following an impressive 2-0 win at Spurs.

“It has always been a concern since Ole left the club,” Rangnick said of the possibility of United failing to qualify for the Champions League. “That was one of the reasons why he probably had to leave the club and of course, results like today’s don’t make things any easier.

“Against Villa, Burnley and today we were one or 2-0 up and gave away two points. This can happen once but it shouldn’t happen three times and with those points the situation would be different but it’s not. This is what we have to face.

“We have to realise the truth and obviously with results like today’s it doesn’t make it any easier to finish fourth at the end.”

EPL: Rangnick laments Man Utd draw against Southampton

Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick lamented another two points dropped at home after their 1-1 draw with Southampton on Saturday.

Che Adams canceled out United attacker Jadon Sancho’s opener for the 1-1 draw.

Rangnick said, “Unfortunately it was very similar to the last couple of games. A very good first half, very good first half hour. We did all the things we intended to do with the counter attacks ands the deep runs. We created, scored a great goal. Then we stopped doing that; at the end of the first half we didn’t do those things anymore and then in the second we lost a bit of shape.

“In the first 20 minutes we were struggling to defend, that happened in transition when they scored their goal. In the last 20 minutes, we had big chances to score again, expected goals was in our favour but we didn’t get the result.

“We told the players they needed to be aggressive [at half time] but in the end it is different to perform like that on the pitch.”

Man Utd players must stick to game plan – Rangnick

Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick is calling on the players to “stick to the gameplan”.

Rangnick, ahead of tomorrow’s clash with Southampton, was asked about reports of the squad being unhappy with his training methods.

He said, “I have nothing to say. I haven’t read any newspapers, or know about those articles, the way the team has developed is obvious tactically, due to the work we’ve been doing in training.

“It’s important the players have also realise that development in the last couple of weeks in and out of possession of the ball. If we concede a goal, against Middlesbrough, it was after 60 minutes, and Burnley was 50 minutes, we should stick to the gameplan and not lose shape or composure.

“This was the most harmful part, we didn’t have the same positioning on the pitch. If the other team scores a goal in football, we have to be aware of why we were so dominant and lose structure, lose shape, this was obvious for 20 minutes against Burnley. It got better at the end but in those 15 mins we lost that shape.”

Man Utd coach Rangnick blames referees for FA Cup exit

Manchester United interim manager, Ralf Rangnick, has blamed match officials for their exit from the FA Cup.

The Red Devils were eliminated in the fourth round of the competition by Middlesbrough on Friday night.

Rangnick’s men lost 8-7 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford, with Anthony Elanga missing the key penalty in the shootout.

Matt Crooks equalized for Middlesbrough during the regulation time after Duncan Watmore had appeared to handle the ball in the build-up.

But referee Anthony Taylor and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) awarded it.

“How can it be accidental [handball] if he controls the ball up in the air with his hand?” Rangnick asked after the match.

  • FA Cup: Middlesbrough shock Man Utd as Rangnick left ‘incredibly disappointed’

FA Cup: Middlesbrough shock Man Utd as Rangnick left ‘incredibly disappointed’

Manchester United crashed out of the FA Cup as Championship side Middlesbrough came from behind at Old Trafford and then emerged victorious in a nail-biting 16-shot penalty shootout.

Young striker Anthony Elanga ballooned his shot over the bar to give Chris Wilder’s side a win that was celebrated in enthusiastic fashion by a 9,000-strong visiting support.

It was only the second time in 11 meetings with Premier League opposition that Middlesbrough had progressed, following on from their equally surprising success at Manchester City in 2015.

United will complain about Middlesbrough’s controversial equaliser, scored by Matt Crooks, who tapped home despite Duncan Watmore clearly handling in the build-up.

However, they only had themselves to blame after failing to take numerous chances in a game where they had 30 shots at goal, the clearest of which came when Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty in the first half.

Jadon Sancho seemed to have put United on the road to the last- 6 when he marked his FA Cup debut with a goal.

Instead, United’s most realistic chance of silverware has now disappeared.

United manger Ralf Rangnick later said: “Incredibly disappointed, we should have won and killed off the game in the first half. Crossbar, post, missed penalty and numerous chances. It should have been 2-0 or 3-0. We conceded a goal which I don’t understand why it stood. He controlled it with his hand.

“In the moment when they scored, it was clear that VAR would not allow this goal to stand. We were not well positioned in that moment, too open and allowed them the counter, we should have won the game.

“Anthony Elanga, anyone can imagine how he us, he is shattered and absolutely disappointed. It was the eighth penalty which had all converted.”

  • Pogba must play at his best before contract expires – Rangnick

Pogba must play at his best before contract expires – Rangnick

Manchester United caretaker boss Ralf Rangnick says there’s been no talk regarding Paul Pogba’s expiring contract.

Pogba is set to play his first game since November tonight in the FA Cup against Middlesbrough.

“I’m happy to have him back in the squad as I said he might be playing from the start tomorrow,” Rangnick said.

“His contract is expiring in the summer and if, in the end, he would like to stay or go somewhere else he has to show up. It’s not only in the interest of us as a club, but it’s in his personal interest that he plays and performs at the highest possible level in the next couple of weeks.

“We haven’t spoken about that (his future) at all so far, not only about Paul’s situation but also other players with contracts expiring in the summer, we also didn’t speak about new players so far.

“My focus now is to play the best possible season we can, to be as successful as we can be and for Paul, it is in his own interest to play on a high level to have a good performance tomorrow and do everything to get into the first XI – that will not automatically happen because we have other good players in that area.”

  • Pogba ready to sign new Man Utd contract if Rangnick…

Pogba ready to sign new Man Utd contract if Rangnick…

Paul Pogba is ready to sign a new contract with Manchester United and stay – if Ralf Rangnick does the same.

The midfielder has been so impressed with the new Red Devils manager during a number of talks with him that he is ready to make a u-turn rather than leave the club on a free in the summer, says The Sun.

France World Cup winner Pogba is yet to play for Rangnick due to a thigh injury picked up on international duty at the start of November.

But the manager’s vision of the future and the part Pogba can play in it at United has won over the player.

Former managers Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could not find the key to unlock Pogba’s best form for the Red Devils in the seasons following his then world record £89million move from Juventus in 2016.

Now Rangnick has started to convince the four-time Serie A winner that he can build a midfield and indeed a team around him.

Rangnick also believes Pogba could prove a galvanising force behind the scenes.

A number of cliques have started to develop in the squad but Pogba remains popular with all his teammates and he would be inspired by this new leadership role.

The 28-year-old is due to return to action for United on Thursday, February 8th for the trip to Turf Moor to face Burnley in the Premier League.

I know which players want to leave Man Utd – Rangnick

Manchester United caretaker boss Ralf Rangnick admits he has players wanting to leave before next week’s transfer deadline.

Jesse Lingard, Donny van de Beek and Anthony Martial are among senior players eager to depart.

Rangnick said, “I do not know (what will happen), I know which players would like to leave.

“I know that there are some negotiations with clubs, but I am not involved. But I will probably be informed if something happens.

“We have to wait and see what happens.”
