Rashford can become regular starter again – Rangnick

Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick says there is a way back into the starting line-up for Marcus Rashford.

The England winger has been relegated to super-sub duties in recent games.

Rashford came on to score in recent wins over Brentford and West Ham United in the Premier League.

“We have a lot of wingers, we have a lot of outstanding players in that position,”said the interim manager in his press conference.

“Jadon (Sancho) was not available today but we have a lot of players for those two positions (striker and winger) and Marcus is one of them.

“Right now, yes, he has scored twice in consecutive games when he came from the bench but, of course, his ambition is to play regularly from the start again.

“It is up to him. If he continually plays on a high level and keeps scoring goals, of course this is the best way to get back into the team and play from the beginning.”

“He is one of the top strikers in England. He is an English international who regular played in the Euros,” he added.

“We all know what kind of quality he has. He has got almost everything that a modern striker needs. He has got the pace, the skills, he has got the size, the physicality of the striker and in the end it is all about confidence for strikers.

“I am pretty sure that those two goals have raised the level of confidence within Marcus. Now it is about taking the next steps and showing that on a regular basis.

“It is about continuity now. I think he can play a very important role for the rest of the season for us.”

  • When you’re 2-0 ahead you must defend better – Rangnick

When you’re 2-0 ahead you must defend better – Rangnick

Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick says it’s difficult to find positives after their 2-2 draw at Aston Villa.

United blew a 2-0 lead in the final minutes for the point.

Rangnick said, “It is very difficult to find positives after these 95 minutes. I felt it was the best game since I came here, in the first half for 30 minutes we dominated the game. We had taken took some steps forward but have a few things to do better.

“The plan was to press them in the midzone and we did that very well in the first 30 minutes, and control the ball, and those were the positives. When you are 2-0 up you have to defend better than we did in the last 15 minutes.

“We gave away too many balls at times in the last 15 minutes, we were not as compact as before and conceded the two goals. In the last 15 minutes before half time we were not as courageous to step up, it was better in the second half and then you have to take the three points home. It feels like a defeat, to be honest.

“Right now is very disappointed but what we showed was a step forward but it about getting the results, it feels like two points lost and given away.”

Rangnick supports Ronaldo for criticising young teammates

Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick supports Cristiano Ronaldo questioning the attitude of young teammates.

Rangnick has backed Cristiano Ronaldo to call out Manchester United players who do not show the right attitude.

Ronaldo said there needs to be a change in attitude and mentality among the players if United are to have any chance of challenging for the major trophies again.

Rangnick said: “If it’s necessary to speak in a very direct manner to the boys, it helps a lot.

“If Cristiano, for example, or any of the other players address that to the players directly on the pitch or in the dressing-room, they are more than welcome to do that.

“I will do that myself as a coach and my coaching staff will.

“If one of our players in the game doesn’t give his very best and put all the effort into it, then I will address that, you can be assured of that.

“So far I haven’t seen that but, with some players, they start well. We can speak about Marcus Rashford, for example.

“I think in the first 20 minutes against Aston Villa he was good, he was on fire, he was emotionally involved.

“Then, after the first 30 minutes, he got worse and he didn’t play on the same kind of energetic level he did in the first half an hour.

“But I don’t see any of the players who don’t care about the club or who don’t want to perform to the best and highest possible level.

“If things don’t go the right way, you have to behave in a certain manner, and it’s about how you deal with those situations.”

Man Utd: Ralf Rangnick reveals Cavani transfer chat

Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani has vowed to remain at Old Trafford until his contract expires at the end of the season.

The Uruguayan has been linked with a move to Barcelona this month.

And United interim boss Ralf Rangnick has confirmed Cavani will see out the remainder of the campaign.

“I told him that if it was up to me I would want him to stay,” Rangnick said ahead of Monday’s FA Cup third-round clash with Aston Villa.

“I had a conversation with him [on Thursday]. He came into my office and we spoke for almost half an hour and he told me he will definitely stay and would want to stay until the end of the season.

“Not only because I told him that he should stay or has to stay, he did it on his own behalf and he told me that I can rely on him to stay until the end of the season and give his very best and be a role model for the young players.

“If he should play from the start, he’s available and he’s happy to play.

“Even if he’s not playing, he will be trying to be the best possible role model for the other players and for me this is good news.”

Man Utd crisis: Don’t blame Ralf Rangnick – Maguire

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire says the players must take responsibility for their struggles this season.

Maguire has admitted that United’s players must take the blame for the crisis that has engulfed Old Trafford – not beleaguered boss Ralf Rangnick.

Maguire said: “He (Rangnick) has made an impact – we win together and lose together. The manager is there to set us up tactically, which we absolutely take on board. His detail and preparation is enormous. We’ve got full respect and trust in his methods.

“Yes, it’s difficult when the coaching team changes mid-season, like it does at loads of clubs. But I will say it again: it’s down to us as players. The quality and leaders are in the team to ensure we finish the season in the top four and with a trophy.”

Maguire insists that Rangnick is not the problem by issuing a passionate defence of the German and his backroom staff.

He said: “We listen to him (Rangnick) and his staff and it’s then up to us once the game starts. Every club has issues, not just us – and some of their issues are bigger than ours. It does come with the territory at United, but we’ve got a big squad.

“Of course, not all the players will always be happy if they are not playing – but that’s football and we all have to remain professional.”

  • Man Utd boss Rangnick reveals Wolves homework

Man Utd boss Rangnick reveals Wolves homework

Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick expects a major test tonight against Wolves.

Rangnick has revealed he’s done his homework on the visitors.

He said, “Yes, another complicated team to play. In most cases they play with a back three or a back five. Very compact on the counterattack, very difficult to outplay.

“And again, it’s about finding the right spots, the right spaces, making the right decisions, playing the ball into the dangerous areas without being vulnerable on the counterattack. This is, against Wolves, one of the most important things.

“That’s the next home game we have, and another game where we will try to get the three points. Against Burnley, they also didn’t concede that many goals so far [this season] and we scored three of them. So why shouldn’t we be able to score goals against Wolves? As long as we keep a clean sheet, or only concede one goal… as long as we score three, everything is okay.

“There is no replacement for winning games. It’s the most important part. This gives confidence to the players. They are unbeaten now for eight competitive games and we have to try and prolong this way of playing.”

  • Martial has told me he wants to leave – Rangnick

Martial has told me he wants to leave – Rangnick

Anthony Martial has told Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick he wants to leave.

Rangnick said he “spoke at length” on Wednesday with the 26-year-old, who told him “it’s the right time for a change”.

Martial has started just two Premier League games this season, scoring once.

Despite his desire to leave Old Trafford, Rangnick confirmed the club had not yet received an offer for the forward.

The player’s agent Philippe Lamboley confirmed earlier this month Martial wanted to leave the club in January, adding he would “speak to the club soon”.

Rangnick said: “He explained to me that he’s been at Manchester United now for the last seven years and he feels it’s the right time for a change, to go somewhere else.”

Martial signed for United in 2015 from Monaco for £36m, making him the world’s most expensive teenage footballer at the time.

He has scored 79 goals in 268 appearances for the Red Devils but has become a fringe player following the arrivals of Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani and Jadon Sancho.

He not featured in any of Rangnick’s games in charge so far and has made just 10 appearances in all competitions this season.

“I think in a way it is understandable,” added Rangnick.

“I could follow his thoughts but on the other hand, it’s also important to see the situation of the club. We have Covid times, we have three competitions in which we have high ambitions and want to be as successful as we can be.

“So far, as far as I know, there has been no offer from any other club and as long as this is the case he will stay.”

  • Rangnick changes won’t happen overnight – Matic

Rangnick changes won’t happen overnight – Matic

Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic feels for caretaker manager Ralf Rangnick and the job he’s taken on.

With the pressure on the German to deliver a top-four finish and progress in the Champions League, Matic believes the presence of managers like Pep Guardiola, Jurgen Klopp, Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte means Rangnick’s task could not be harder.

Matic said: “I think this is the toughest league so far. When I came over in 2009, it was only Chelsea and Man United who were competing. Now there are a lot of teams who have a chance to win. The smaller ones have improved a lot and buy top-class players.

“The Premier League is just very hard…much more than 15 years ago, and of course, every manager who comes to a new club needs a period to adapt.”

Rangnick has not ruled out a longer stint at the helm if he can resurrect United’s campaign.

He has signed a contract that guarantees him a further two years in an advisory capacity.

Matic said: “Of course, it will take some time, but we have enough talent in the squad to understand quickly and play how he wants us to.

“And that means a bit of everything, it isn’t just about pressing. You have to know what to do at this moment or that, and when and where to press.

“You must be physically ready, play well tactically when your chance comes, and we are already adapting to him.

“We understand his ideas and how he wants to play, what he wants from us in every position. Gradually we will be where he wants us to be.

“We are all positive and we’re already adapting to him. It’s only the beginning but we are all positive about things, so we will see in the future.”

  • Morrison, Arteta reject Rangnick’s League Cup claims

Morrison, Arteta reject Rangnick’s League Cup claims

Former Manchester United youngster Ravel Morrison has hit out at caretaker manager Ralf Rangnick over the German’s claims Premier League clubs leave the Carabao Cup.

Derby midfielder Morrison has insisted that the competition provides youngsters with the opportunity to make a name for themselves and gain experience.

Morrison posted to social media: “It’s a good cup for the younger generation to get their chance & shine.”

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta also said: “We made it to the semifinals, which is what we wanted.

“I don’t see coaches and clubs giving up the League Cup because everyone wants to win and win trophies.

“If you look at the lineups of teams 10 years ago and now, you will see that they are very different.”

  • Man Utd manager Rangnick suggests scrapping League Cup

Man Utd manager Rangnick suggests scrapping League Cup

Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick has suggested scrapping the League Cup to ease fixture congestion in English football.

The domestic schedule is coming under huge pressure, with the impact of the Omicron variant of coronavirus sweeping through dressing rooms and forcing postponements throughout the country.

Manchester United, themselves, have not played since Dec. 11 due to their own COVID-19 outbreak and had Premier League games against Brentford and Brighton postponed.

They are set to return to action at Newcastle United on Monday and interim boss Rangnick said: “It is a big tradition in England to play on Boxing Day or the 27th, even on the 30th or the 2nd of January.

“I think we should stick to and respect this tradition, but there might be two other issues that have been discussed in the past.

“England is the only country in the top five leagues in Europe that plays two Cup competitions.

“In France, they abolished the second one a year or two ago. So, we are the only country who plays two Cup competitions.

“This is something we could once again speak about and discuss.

“I know the League Cup is still kept for the third and fourth division teams to improve the financial situations of those clubs.

“But if we speak about a tight calendar and having to play too many games, this is something to discuss.”

Rangnick welcomed the decision taken on Monday to scrap FA Cup third and fourth round replays.

Ties will now be played to a conclusion at the first attempt, with extra time and penalty kicks if required.

However, the Football Association (FA), which scrapped replays for the whole of last season’s competition, intends to restore them next year.

On the scrapping of FA Cup replays, Rangnick said: “This is a good idea.

“In Cup competitions in other countries, you play extra time and penalty kicks. You have replays, those are topics you could speak about.”
