REVEALED: Man Utd coach Rangnick rejected Arsenal over Ozil

Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick turned down the manager’s job at Arsenal, it has been revealed.

After the retirement of Arsene Wenger in 2018, Arsenal went well down the road to appointing Rangnick as the Frenchman’s replacement, reports Kicker.

However, the German pulled out of negotiations after learning Arsenal had renewed the contract of Mesut Ozil without his say-so.

The source states Rangnick walked out on the deal because of extending the contract “without consultation […] with playmaker diva Mesut Özil”. Instead, the Gunners turned to Unai Emery.

Rangnick enjoyed a winning start with United on Sunday with victory over Crystal Palace.

My style not far behind Klopp’s – Ralf Rangnick

New Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick says he’ll need four weeks to get the players comfortable with his style of play.

Rangnick admits he wants to introduce an intense pressing game to the squad he’s inherited.

He explained: “You have to be aware of what kind of players you have and what their position is. They are experienced and smart enough to know that, but I can’t turn the players we have into pressing monsters right now.

“I want them to be ready in two, three or four weeks.

“My football is definitely not a slow waltz! I’m not that far behind Juergen Klopp in terms of our ideas about a style of football, that’s no secret. This is the biggest club I’ve ever worked for, the biggest club. The greatest thing in the world is to celebrate the DNA that this club still has, but also to implement it in the transformation to modern football.”

I tried to sign Sancho at age 17 – Rangnick

Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick admits he tried to sign Jadon Sancho early in his career.

Sancho chose Borussia Dortmund over RB Leipzig when leaving Manchester City in 2017.

“I am very excited,” Rangnick told manutd.com. “I mean, they have so many top, talented young players – Jadon Sancho I know from the German Bundesliga.

“As a matter of fact, I met him when he was 17, in London. At the time, we were trying to convince him to come to Leipzig and he decided a couple of months later to come to [Borussia] Dortmund, which was not a wrong step from his perspective.

“Mason Greenwood, Marcus Rashford, there are so many top, talented young players in the squad and, on top of that, the experienced top players. To work with those kind of players and to help them to get better, yeah, I’m very much looking forward to that.”

Rangnick’s Man Utd appointment, set up for failure – Sheringham

Manchester United Treble winner Teddy Sheringham feels Ralf Rangnick’s appointment is set up for failure.

Rangnick will take over as interim boss until the end of the season, with a two-year consultancy role after that – but it is unclear what the club’s long-term plan is.

Sheringham told talkSPORT: “The whole scenario after putting Michael Carrick in charge as interim manager, to get another interim manager in for the next six months is just absurd for a club like Manchester United. With a view to, if he does do well, he might get the job. Surely they know who they want to be their next manager.

“I find it very strange what is going on up there at the moment. You’d like to think they know who they want and are waiting for the right man. When there’s talk he might get the job as well, it leaves you with a little bit of indecision all over the place.

“If you were a player and this manager came in who you know is only going to be there for six months and he didn’t really fancy you for the first couple of weeks, your response to that would be mucking about in training and thinking ‘it doesn’t matter’ as he will be gone in six months.

“If he says to you ‘go and warm up’, you’ll say ‘no, I’m not warming up, I’ll be here longer than you, mate’. You know how footballers are. It gets petty. I just find it a strange situation to be in at the moment.”

Ronaldo and Rangnick must find compromise – Henry

Arsenal great Thierry Henry says Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo and new manager Ralf Rangnick will need to thrash out their differences.

Ronaldo struck twice in victory over Arsenal last night.

Henry reckons they’ll both need to meet each other in the middle somehow and put the club’s best interests first.

He said: “We shouldn’t talk about the man, what he can achieve, what he can do, or what he did achieve and what he can still do.

“Now, it’s going to have to be a discussion between Rangnick and him because we all know that’s part of the game he lacks the most and that is part of the game Rangnick likes the most – pressing and counter-pressing.

“So, they need to have a discussion on who is going to give up a little bit on what they usually like to do and ego’s going to have to be put on the side at one point for the good of this club. It shouldn’t be a Ronaldo thing or a Rangnick thing, they need to find a way to pull this club forward.”

Arteta speaks about Rangnick ahead of Man Utd clash

Arteta also described Rangnick as a really interesting person in the football world.

The Gunners manager stated this while speaking about Rangnick on Wednesday during his pre-match press conference ahead of Arsenal’s away Premier League clash with Manchester United on Thursday night.

Carrick debunks Rangnick influence on Man Utd, Chelsea game

Ralf Rangnick had no input on Manchester United’s selection and tactics in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea in the Premier League, says caretaker manager Michael Carrick.

The visitors took the lead through Jadon Sancho despite mustering only three shots throughout the entire match in west London, and stubbornly held on for a point after a Jorginho penalty had pulled Chelsea level.

Rangnick – a noted mentor of Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel – is widely expected to be appointed as the full-time interim successor to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but Carrick was quick to shoot down suggestions that the German had any input on his own approach over the weekend.

“It is not the case, no,” the former United midfielder told BBC Sport when asked if his likely replacement influenced his decisions throughout the match. “[I’m] slightly disappointed to be honest. We went ahead, we came here to win. To go 1-0 up and have it taken away from you is disappointing.

“That intent and that hunger summed us up today. We knew it wasn’t going to be free-flowing football at times but we were prepared to dig in. [Sancho] managed to score and I am pleased for him. It has been a decent couple of games.”

Carrick added that the point was bittersweet given that he would have rather been in the dugout alongside former boss and friend Solskjaer, adding: “It is mixed feelings because I shouldn’t be here if things had gone as we wanted. I felt like we lost out on it today because two wins would have been better.”

“The modern European system of football training, which Rangnick introduced at Lokomotiv, is not tied to personalities and will continue to work after his departure.
