‘I don’t even know who I feel more sorry for’ – Kalinichenko speaks on how Rangnick, Ronaldo can’t work

Former Spartak Moscow midfielder Maxim Kalinichenko is baffled by how Ralf Rangnick will manage Manchester United.

Lokomotiv Moscow technical director Rangnick is set to be named United manager to the end of the season.

But Kalinichenko can’t see how the German and Cristiano Ronaldo can work together: “I don’t even know who I feel more sorry for, Rangnik, who will try to build his favourite pressure, or Cristiano, who is simply an outsider in this very component.

“How will the coach get out of the situation in which he, like the main star, simply does not fit the tactics. And not only does not fit, but absolutely flies out of it. By all parameters and pressure metrics, Cristiano is one of the worst in the league.

“It’s very interesting how Rangnick will get out of this stalemate. Putting Ronaldo in the lineup, the whole system and all the work in the cycle will collapse. Do not deliver, you get an angry star and a mess in the locker room. Well, there is another, fantastic scenario in which Cristiano will begin to do everything that the German says. Then I will definitely say that Ronaldo is cooler than (Lionel) Messi.”

Rangnick reportedly influenced Carrick to bench Ronaldo

Former Manchester United captain, Gary Neville, has suggested that incoming interim manager, Ralf Rangnick, was responsible for Michael Carrick’s decision to drop Cristiano Ronaldo against Chelsea on Sunday.

Carrick took the bold decision to drop the 36-year-old, but claimed it was merely a move to “freshen up the team”.

However, Neville feels it is a sign of things to come when Rangnick takes over at Old Trafford.

He tweeted: “A lot of people having a go at Michael Carrick for dropping Ronaldo and picking that MDF.

“I’ve a feeling the the incoming manager has picked that team as it’s a huge departure from midweek and what they’ve been doing.”

United held Chelsea to a 1-1 draw, as Jadon Sancho’s breakaway goal was cancelled out by Jorginho’s penalty.

EPL: Paul Merson questions Man Utd move for Rangnick

Arsenal title winner Paul Merson has questioned Manchester United’s move for Ralf Rangnick.

Rangnick has been hailed as a ‘football visionary for his ‘Gegenpressing’ style of football and has won seven trophies during his coaching career.

But Merson believes Rangnick faces a far more difficult challenge at United.

“Why do they need an interim manager? Because they don’t know what they’re doing at the moment, in my opinion,” Merson told Soccer Saturday.

“Ole would have been at the club still today if it wasn’t for two goals in the last minute at Watford. I don’t think there was any plan. They didn’t think in their wildest dreams it was going to end up like that at Watford. At 2-1, I think he’s still in charge come Sunday. I think they were going to keep it going as long as they could.

“Now, to bring in a manager… I’m hearing people going how great he is – but he’s never managed in England, he’s never managed one of the top teams in the world. Why is that? Why has no one else come in for him when managers have been up?

“I hear great things about him, people saying he’s going to press and he’s hard working and he’s turned lesser teams into real contenders. But that’s a lot different, getting a Schalke or a Hoffenheim to a certain stage.

“When you’re asked to go to one of the biggest clubs in the world and they already have superstars and you’ve got to make them play… it’s all right at Schalke and Hoffenheim because they’re going to listen and they want to get there. These [United] players are there and you have got to get them to go again.

“I think this is going to be difficult, this is going to be a lot harder than what people think.

“What I’m hearing is it’s like a gimme, he’ll come in and that will be it. That Man Utd are lucky. I’m not sure about that.”

Rooney speaks on Man Utd chances of appointing Ralf Rangnick

Derby boss Wayne Rooney insists Manchester United’s squad is capable of winning trophies this season.

Rooney believes Ralf Rangnick will take the reins after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking.

“He’s obviously very highly respected in the game, and I think he’s got a tough job to come in to,” Rooney said.

“I don’t mean in terms of his ability, in terms of to come in for six months and stamp his way of playing and his pressing if you like, and how he likes to work.

“But he’s very experienced, I’m sure he’ll adapt to the players he’s got and bring some stability back to the team, but also with the view of looking to try and win trophies.

“That Manchester United team are more than capable of winning trophies this season, and I think they’ve made the right appointment to give themselves the best chance.”

Man Utd players upset over Rangnick’s imminent appointment

Manchester United players are upset with how management have sought to appoint Ralf Rangnick as new interim manager.

The former RB Salzburg and Leipzig boss has been enticed to Old Trafford from Russian outfit Lokomotiv Moscow where he was operating as the club’s sporting director on a £3.8m-a-year deal.

The Daily Star says many of the current squad members are feeling aggrieved that they were not informed about the deal prior to the news being relayed to the media.

No one at the top of the United hierarchy relayed the message to the players, either in person or via the shared WhatsApp group chat used by the current crop of stars.

The lack of communication between players and staff may stem from United’s desire to keep as tight-lipped over the deal as possible, though the United stars feel they should have been told who the new boss will be, especially given he is expected to start taking training sessions soon.

Due to work permit-related issues, the former Hoffenheim boss will not be able to take charge of Sunday’s crucial league tie away at Chelsea, while the visit of Arsenal next Thursday is also expected to come too soon.

Rangnick appointment: Man Utd reach agreement with Lokomotiv moscow

Manchester United have reached an agreement with Lokomotiv Moscow for the Russian club’s head of sports and development Ralf Rangnick to move to Old Trafford as interim manager.

The deal is not yet complete, as some contractual elements remain to be sorted out and there needs to be an application for a work permit.

However, it is now just a question of time before an official announcement that Rangnick will replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as manager for the remainder of the season.

The German, 63, will then stay on at the Old Trafford club for an additional two years in a consultancy role.

Rangnick will not be in place in time for United’s game against Chelsea on Sunday when Michael Carrick will again be in temporary charge but he could be in the dugout for Thursday’s Premier League game at home to Arsenal.

  • Ex-Lokomotiv president: Man Utd-bound Rangnick only cares about money

Ex-Lokomotiv president: Man Utd-bound Rangnick only cares about money

Former Lokomotiv Moscow president Nikolai Naumov has launched a furious attack on departing technical director Ralf Rangnick.

Rangnick is on the brink of leaving Loko to become caretaker manager of Manchester United.

“It’s not about Manchester. For Rangnick, this is no escape, betrayal, or disgrace. Rangnick is a merchant,” Naumov told Match TV.

“He absolutely does not care about football, because he only does business around him. And the more countries, leagues and football clubs he covers, the more he will earn.

“He’s absolutely indifferent to Lokomotiv. He did not come here to raise football, but to earn money.

“Now he was offered money elsewhere, and he and his company will go to United. When he’s offered to work in Africa, he will go to earn money there, leaving his deputy at Manchester United. Clean business.”

The terms of Rangnick’s contract mean he will stay on for a further two years in a consultancy role once his time as interim boss at Old Trafford come to an end.

But Naumov added: “I will never believe that Manchester United will let him enter the club as a whole agency.

“As a coach – yes, he is an experienced specialist, it can be. I doubt that even as a consultant he will have the opportunity to do his own ‘buy and sell’. We’ll see what will happen to Rangnick in six months.”
