  • 45-year-old woman raped, murdered in Imo

45-year-old woman raped, murdered in Imo

The Imo State Government has vowed to fish out suspected ritualists who allegedly killed a 45-year-old woman, Mrs. Susanna Iwuoha, after raping her.

Iwuoha, a mother of four from Alaocha, Umuchiaku, in the Lowa-Okata Autonomous community, Ihitte Uboma LGA, was found dead with her face dug into a local stream days after she left home to get cassava from her farmland.

The woman, whose undergarments were allegedly carted away by her attackers, was discovered by a community search party after her children raised the alarm over her disappearance since June 3.

A man identified as Bernard Ekeka, who is believed to have seen the yet unidentified attackers, was also killed.

The woman’s alleged rape and murder, it was gathered, created panic in the community especially because two other women identified as
Mrs Chidinma Nwokorie and Mrs Evelyn Duru have allegedly fallen victims to rapists in recent times.

Locals told our correspondent they believed the perpetrators were familiar with the terrain and most likely enemies within.

Iwuoha’s 15-year-old daughter, Ugochi, said they had earlier gone to the farm together for weeding and returned home before her mother decided to go back later that day to harvest some crops.

During a visit to the community on Sunday, Commissioner for Special Projects, Simon Ebegbulem appealed to residents to avail the police any useful information to aid the arrest of the perpetrators.

Ebegbulem, who hails from the area, was accompanied on a condolence visit to the deceased’s aged mother, Madam Angela Iwuoha, her children and community leaders by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Etiti Division, Charles Njoku, a Superintendent of Police (SP).

He assured the people that the administration of Governor Hope Uzodinma will do everything within its power to ensure justice prevailed.

“No stone will be left unturned to ensure that the perpetrators of these henious crimes are brought to justice. The administration of Governor Hope Uzodinma, as you all know, is a listening and compassionate one.

“The governor has within the short time in office made a lot of inroad in the areas of security and infrastructural development. The administration has zero tolerance for any form of criminality, and in no time, the perpetrators will be fished out and made answerable to the law,” he said.

The DPO urged the residents to identify the culprits, noting that those who committed the crimes were no strangers to the locals.

“The issue is that it is a community affair. The community knows those people, because, they are living with them. They should come to the police to give us useful information. They will be protected.

“Traditional rulers, opinion leaders, vigilante groups, should assist us here. Security is not a one-man affair. This is the third case within this area,” said the DPO.

  • I will not rest until rapists are brought to justice – Adeboye

The General Overseer (GO) of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, says he and his prayer warriors will not rest in prayers until the perpetrators of rape are accorded stiffer penalty.

Adeboye said during a live programme on DOVE TV, monitored in Ibadan on Sunday, that the issue of rape had become rampant in the society.

He described rape as bad and unbiblical that it could leave a permanent scare on the victim for the rest of her life.

According to him, there is no pain that can be compared to the pain on the parents whose daughter had been raped.

“Myself and prayer warriors will not rest in prayers until the perpetrators of this evil are brought to justice, not only in Nigeria but all over the world.

“Everyone who has ever committed rape, particularly in Nigeria and the world, the all-knowing God will fish them.

“As much as I hate death sentence, I think every form of punishment that will be given to a rapist cannot be considered too severe.

“Anyone, who ever thinks of raping someone again, the almighty God will stop them even before they do so and if they insist God will take them away.

“I am calling on every Christian all over the world to please join me in this prayer,” he said.

Adeboye also urged the faithful never to embrace the spirit of ‘good enough’ because it could be an enemy of greatness.

“Your journey to the top begins when you start sensing that what you call ‘good’ is not enough; the greatest enemy is when you think that you are already great while you are still incomplete.

“Your journey to the top begins when you become aware that God reserves the best till the last; the journey to the top begins from your knees and acknowledging Christ as your lord and saviour,” he said.

He, therefore, urged those who had not surrendered their lives to Jesus Christ to do so in order to each the desired place of destiny God had designed for them.

  • Death sentence, castration not sufficient to end rape – ASUU

Death sentence, castration not sufficient to end rape – ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) says death sentence and castration of rape offenders is not sufficient to end incessant rape cases in the country.

Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, National President of the union made this known in an interview in Ota, Ogun State on Sunday.

Ogunyemi said that death sentence and other stiffer punishments imposed on armed robbers by the Federal Government had not yielded desirable result or end armed robbery in the country.

He attributed incessant cases of rape to poor governance, noting that the individual may have problems and that the society also has to be blamed.

“The country has to balance the two by looking on how best we can reform and how best the nation can create the environment to minimise the manifestation of this prevalent.

“How do we create an environment where people will express their frustration on people by oppressing the innocent girls or women in the society,” Ogunyemi told NAN.

He described rape as a form of pervasion and abnormal way of behaving caused by psychological dislocation or mental problem exhibited by the rapist.

According to him, the social environment the nation finds itself also creating avenues for such act to be perpetrated.

Ogunyemi, however, said that the nation needed to look back into the society to uncovered what the people were doing wrongly.

The ASUU president said that imposing death sentence and castration on rapists, was just like going to an extreme without addressing root causes of the problem.

Ogunyemi advocated a life sentence for rape offenders rather than death sentence, saying the offender could end up becoming an advocate against rape after undergoing reforms in the prison.

He listed three factors to be considered in sanctioning rapists to include: the punishment must serve as deterrent to others, people must be reformed and the punishment must be commensurate to the offence committed.

“The people will be able to rediscover their lives in the prison through proper guidance in term of reorientation and reeducation.

“Through this process, the country can reclaim a sizable number of people that are sexually pervasive,” he said.

He urged the federal government to grant free education and health care services to Nigerians to enable them pay more attention in bringing up their children as well as reduce pressure on family units.

This, he said, would help to reduce the recurrence of rape in the country.

  • Alibaba condemns false rape accusation

Revered comedian, Atunyota Alleluya Akpoboriome, aka Alibaba, has aired his opinion on the downsides of false rape accusation

In an Instagram post, Alibaba said that one of the hazards of false accusations is that it becomes harder for people to believe true cases.

He stated that it also terminates the life of the person falsely accused.

He wrote; “Your lies about being raped, also then gives some men the belief that it will be your word against theirs.

“It is one more reason many people, who are victims, are afraid to speak out. In all, rape is unpardonable. It’s a crime. It should not even be thought of. Think about it, what if she passed on and had no chance to say I lied?

“But if it’s not true, don’t put a fellow man through it. Using the story of Joseph in Egypt, who suffered in the hands of Potiphar’s wife, you can imagine the loss Egypt would have suffered if Joseph was killed in prison. The butler would not have had freedom and the pyramids may not have been built.”

Alibaba made this known while responding to a skit posted by popular Instagram comedian, Mr Macaroni.

In the clip, a lady falsely accused her former lover of raping her. She later admits that it was a way to get back at him. Sadly, it was too late as the troubled young man had already committed suicide.

  • Can a man rape is wife? – Francis Ewherido

Can a man rape is wife? – Francis Ewherido

    Francis Ewherido

The issue of rape is topical at the moment. People are asking questions and someone asked: “Can a husband also be accused of raping his wife?” For me a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer is insufficient. To start with, what is rape? “Rape is a type of sexual assault usually involving sexual intercourse or other forms of sexual penetration carried out against a person without that person’s consent.”

In Nigerian Criminal Code, Section 357, “any person who has unlawful carnal knowledge of a woman or girl, without her consent, or with her consent, if the consent is obtained by force or by means of threats or intimidation of any kind, or by fear of harm, or by means of false and fraudulent representation as to the nature of the act, or, in the case of a married woman, by personating her husband, is guilty of an offence which is called rape.”

Legally speaking, a husband cannot be accused of raping his wife in Nigeria, going by this definition of rape. Also in most African traditions, it will be ludicrous for a wife to accuse her husband of rape. Even the family that the woman came from will wonder if their daughter is sane. It is believed that once a man pays a woman’s bride price, he has all rights over her, including conjugal rights. In fact some see the wife as a property. It takes a reasonable man to realize that his wife is not a piece of furniture, but a human being with a mind of her own, feelings, emotions and moods.

In Christian marriages, rape of a wife should not come in if the spouses follow the Christian teachings and their marital vows. In 1Corinthians 9: 3-5, Paul wrote: “The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife. Do not deprive each other (sex) except perhaps by mutual consent…” When taking marital vows, spouses promise to love, honour and cherish each other.

Now this is my take. In marriage, sex should be freely given and taken. Where it is not freely given, under no circumstances should it be forcefully taken. An unsatisfied sexual urge has never killed anybody and it will not kill you. Notable marriage counsellor and youth coach, Mrs. Bridget Itsueli, asked a group of youths I brought together for mentoring 12 years ago: “since you have been reading newspapers, have you ever read any obituary where the cause of death is an unsatisfied sexual urge?”

Granted that an unsatisfied sexual urge does not kill, why should you deny your spouse his/her conjugal rights? Yes, it is a right, an entitlement. Some spouses deny their spouses sex because they are angry. My question is, if you are angry with your boss in the office — and it happens sometimes — do you refuse to do your work? If your answer is no, the same thing should happen in your marriage. Whether or not you are angry with your spouse, if he/she asks for sex, please give it to him/her. If you like, you can discuss the reason for your anger later. But if you want to bottle up your anger, na you sabi!

But spouses must act in love and be considerate when dealing with the issue of sex. For instance, if your spouse comes back from work and he/she is exhausted, if you ask for sex and he/she explains to you that he/she is very tired, you should be reasonable enough to let him/her be. There is always another time, which can be as soon as five hours later.

Some spouses are unbelievably insensitive and selfish. When we were in Ughelli, Delta State, in 1970, there was an uproar. A woman was shouting, “mi vwie nu bo” (I was delivered of a baby only recently) repeatedly. All the woman around, including mama, ran there. I was too young to understand. But what happened was that her husband wanted to sleep with her about three weeks after delivery. Having witnessed some childbirths and post childbirths, I am numb at the man’s insensitivity. But if there are no inhibitions and your spouse is in the mood for sex and you are not, please give it to him/her. You don’t have to enjoy it every time to necessitate you engaging in it. At such times, just take it as your marital duty and fulfil it.

Now I have a special plea to wives. An author once observed that when a man has an erection, his brain goes on recess. I do not know how sexual urge is with women, but that is how it is for men. E dey make us no dey get sense. As much as possible, do not starve your husband of sex. Even if it means you will just lie there while he pleasures himself, do it. I do not want to write about some of the confessions of men who were denied sex by their wives here, but in mild cases, some of them sulk and sulk for days. Some husbands turn violent and take it force, unfortunately. Men scarcely take rejection in good fate.

I have heard some shocking marital tales. A woman denied her husband sex because he refused to pay for her aso ebi. Another woman denied her husband sex because he refused to buy her a particular car. Yet another woman denied her husband sex because he refused to build a new house for her parents. One more bizarre tale, a husband demands for and collects money (bribe) from his wife before sleeping with her. It is very wrong to use sex as a weapon in marriage; it is a grievous marital abuse that that should have no place in marriage.

In the United States, rape of wives is recognized and it is a criminal offence. But I feel enacting laws against rape of spouses alone does not solve the problem. There are other abuses (physical, emotional, psychological, etc.) going on in marriages. The solutions still remain mutual understanding, empathy, respect and love. Where these are absent, there should be laws to give all spouses all-round protection.

    RAPE HAS NO RIDER

When discussing the issue of rape, some people throw in a rider: provocative dressing by women fuels rape. These people do not get it. A half-naked or naked woman does excite men undoubtedly, but that is not the issue. In Urhobo land, every adult, especially men, has an alias (odova). My grandmother’s was esevweremare (old people’s fashion). If you call her esevweremare, she will respond, “obijiwoni, wo kw’opharo kuphia” (if it offends your sensibilities, turn away). The issue here is choice. Rapists have the choice of looking away. You cannot justify rape because some women dress scantily/provocatively. In any case, 18-year-old Miss Barakat Bello was a hijab-wearing Muslim, yet she was raped and killed in Ibadan last week. It is simply NO, NO and NO to rape, no riders, no preconditions.

  • Nigerian governors declare state of emergency on rape

Nigerian governors declare state of emergency on rape

As rape cases continue to increase, all thirty-six governors in Nigeria have declared a state of emergency on sexual and gender-based violence against women and children.

In a communiqué released on Thursday, Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum, NGF, Kayode Fayemi, said the decision was reached at a meeting held on Wednesday.

Fayemi said the governors also renewed commitment to ensuring that offenders face the full weight of the law.

He said the governors agreed to, “Declare a State of Emergency on Sexual and Gender-based Violence. Governors strongly condemned all forms of violence against women and children and committed to ensuring that offenders face the maximum weight of the law.”

“Call on State Governors that have not already domesticated relevant gender-based protection laws to domesticate the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, the Child Rights Act and the updated Penal Code to increase protection for women and children and ensure speedy investigation and prosecution of perpetrators in addition to creating a sex offenders register in each State to name and shame.”

The decision is coming on the heels of rising cases of rape and gender based violence across states in the country.
