62-year-old Congolese music sensation, Koffi Olomide bags 15 years jail term for raping teenager

International music star, Antoine Christophe Agbepa Mumba a.k.a. Koffi Olomide was handed a two years suspended jail sentence by a court in France for raping a 15 year-old girl, he was sentenced in absentia as he failed to show up in the court room.

This sentence means that the 62 year-old music composer, producer and singer faces an arrest if he commits further offenses, according to BBC.

The graduate of Business Economic and pioneer of the soukous genre was order by the court to pay a fine of 5,000 Euros ($5,700; £4,300) in damages to the former dancer.

He was also ordered to pay the same amount to the court for illegally bringing three women into France.

Reports also stated that Olomide’s lawyer, Emmanuel Marsigny hailed the ruling as a victory that it would result in the withdrawal of the star’s international arrest warrant.

The Kisangani born artist in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was accused of raping a young lady between 2002 and 2006 after it was alleged that he seized her passport.

He went on trial after four former dancers claimed he sexually assaulted them several times between 2002 and 2006.

The assaults allegedly happened in the DRC as well as in France, including at a villa outside Paris where the women said they were held against their will.

The dancers said they managed to make a night-time escape from the villa in June 2006, and have not returned to their country since for fear of reprisals.

Prosecutors at his trial in Nanterre, outside Paris, had sought a seven-year prison sentence but the court dismissed the assault and kidnapping charges.

The Master Degree holder in Mathematics was first charged in 2012 with aggravated rape but the charges were subsequently reduced.

Facing a French arrest warrant, he fled to DR Congo in 2009 but had initially said he would appear at the trial to defend himself.

Olomide, however, failed to show for the trial last month, which was held behind closed doors at the women’s request.

  • We need to talk to our boys about rape-Joke Silva

Joke Silva, a popular Nollywood actress has said more boys need to be given orientation about rape.

Silva, who is married to Olu Jacobs, a fellow Nollywood veteran, made this known in an interview with Hip TV.

“We need to talk to our boys to let them understand that sex though a beautiful thing shouldn’t be a thing of violation. We still need to tell our young ladies to speak up, that are important. The narrative has to go to the young boys that rape is not a rite of passage. A lot of young men have been socialized to believe that when a woman says ‘No’ she actually means ‘Yes’ “.

Speaking further, she expressed her opinion on feminism, adding that feminism is about mutual respect.

“Feminism simply means being treated like a human being; it’s simply about mutual respect. Why feminism has taken a front burner is simply because over the years, women have been maltreated for so many reasons”.

TheNewsGuru recalls that in 2018, Joke Silva had revealed that the lifestyles flaunted on social media by celebrities cannot be funded by earnings from acting.

In her words:Don’t be deceived by what goes on on social media. Obviously, there is something else such actors are doing, perhaps other businesses to shore up their income,” she said.

“The reality is that on the earning capacity of an actor in Nigeria, you cannot have that sort of lifestyle in this economy. Yes, part of our industry is to have glamour but also the other part is to have reality”, she told Genevieve Magazine.

  • Hotelier’s son, friend detained for drugging, raping lady

Son of the owner of the Dallankester Hotels, Don-Chime George, and his friend, Rasaq Oke, have been detained by operatives of the Lagos State Police Command for supposedly drugging and raping a 23-year-old lady in the Lekki Phase 1 area of the state.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Chike Oti, stated in a statement, on Tuesday, that George and Oke allegedly mixed the victim’s drink with a substance that made her weak and took her to the hotel where she was repeatedly raped.

He added that when the elder brother of the victim informed the police about the incident, operatives led by the Divisional Police Officer, Maroko Division, CSP Isah Abdulmajid, arrested the suspects and recovered a video recording of the duo sexually abusing the unconscious victim from their phones.

Oti said, “The gender section of the Lagos State Police Command is investigating a case of rape reported against one Razaq Oluwaseun Oke, 28, and Don-Chima George, 25, of the Dallankester Hotels, Lekki, Phase 1, Lagos State.

“The duo allegedly took a girl, 23, to a club on Saturday, February 2, 2019, unknown to her that they had an ulterior motive. While at the club, they laced the young woman’s drink with a substance that made her weak and almost unconscious. Satisfied that the drug was beginning to affect the victim, they quietly left the club with her to the Dallankester Hotels in Lekki Phase 1, which is owned by the father of Don-Chima George.

“At the hotel, they took turns to rape her. As if that wasn’t enough, they made a video recording of the abuse.

“When the victim woke up from the induced sleep, she confronted the suspects, who denied having carnal knowledge of her. Not satisfied, she put a call through to her elder brother to complain that she had been violated. The brother immediately invited policemen from the Maroko Division led by the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Isah Abdulmajid, to the scene.

“Upon searching the suspects, the DPO recovered their phones and went through their video recordings, where he saw a video of the suspects sexually abusing the apparently unconscious victim.”

  • Chris Brown regains freedom after arrest over rape allegation

US singer Chris Brown has been released without charge in Paris after being interrogated on suspicion of rape.

An investigation into the alleged incident is continuing, the Paris prosecutor’s office said.

The singer and two other men were arrested on Monday after a 24-year-old woman alleged she was assaulted in a hotel in the city earlier this month.

After his release, Brown took to social media to deny the allegation

“I want to make it perfectly clear, this is false,” he wrote on Instagram, alongside a picture that said: “This bitch lyin’.”

He added in all-capitals: “I wanna make it perfectly clear…this is false,” before going on to say it was “against my character and morals”.

Brown’s lawyer, Raphael Chiche, said the R&B singer “energetically” professed his innocence and intended to sue for defamation.

The two men arrested with Brown, identified by French media as a bodyguard and a friend, have also reportedly been released.

The alleged incident is said to have occurred at the luxury Mandarin Oriental hotel on 15 January.

This isn’t the singer’s first encounter with the law – he has a number of previous, high-profile convictions for violence.

Recall that he received five years probation and a community service order for assaulting his ex-girlfriend, Rihanna, in his car in 2009.

In 2016, he was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon after a woman told police he had threatened her with a gun.

  • Sad! Chris Brown arrested over rape accusation in France

R&B singer, Chris Brown, has been arrested in Paris following a rape accusation by a 24-year-old woman.

French officials said Brown and two others were currently in custody after a woman filed a rape allegation in northwest Paris after meeting her in a nightclub, Fox 5 news reported.

The arrests were first reported by French tabloid Closer, which said the three were arrested after the woman alleged she was raped at Brown’s hotel suite on the night of January 15.

Police said one of the others held is Brown’s bodyguard.

The singer was arrested on Monday and remains in custody while police probe the complaint.

The woman is said to have followed the singer to his hotel room where the incident allegedly occurred.

Prosecutors in the French capital confirmed that the 29-year-old faced criminal charges after the alleged sex attack a week ago.

“He is accused of a rape and is being held at the judicial police offices in the 1st arrondissement,” said a prosecuting source.

“He was arrested with two others on Monday, and interviews and other enquiries are ongoing. The offence is said to have taken place on the night of January 15 this year.”

The complainant, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said she met Brown at a nightclub and then returned to his hotel with other women and a total of three men.

“The woman said she was abused by Brown, a bodyguard, and a friend, and then she was left alone with the star,” said another source in Paris.

“A total of three men were arrested at Brown’s hotel. They did not resist police, and now have lawyers representing them.”

Brown’s publicists at Sony Music would not immediately comment.

  • Police request Ronaldo DNA sample over rape allegation

Police in Las Vegas have issued a warrant for a DNA sample from Cristiano Ronaldo as part of their investigation into the rape allegations made against the Juventus forward.

The 33-year-old’s lawyer, Peter S. Christiansen, told BBC Sport it was a “very standard request”.

The Wall Street Journal says the warrant was recently sent to the court system in Italy.

Ronaldo denies assaulting Kathryn Mayorga at a Las Vegas hotel in 2009.

“Mr Ronaldo has always maintained, as he does today, that what occurred in Las Vegas in 2009 was consensual in nature, so it is not surprising that DNA would be present, nor that the police would make this very standard request as part of their investigation,” said Christiansen’s statement.

German weekly news magazine Der Spiegel, which first published the story about the allegation in October, said Ms Mayorga filed a report with Las Vegas police shortly after the alleged incident.

Der Spiegel said that in 2010, she reportedly reached an out-of-court settlement with Ronaldo involving a $375,000 (£288,000) payment for agreeing never to go public with the allegations.

Her lawyers are now seeking to declare the non-disclosure agreement void.

Ronaldo’s lawyer has previously said his client does not deny entering an agreement but that “the reasons that led him to do so are at least to be distorted”.

He added: “This agreement is by no means a confession of guilt.”

Ms Mayorga was inspired to speak out by the #MeToo movement, her lawyer has said, and is suing Ronaldo in a lawsuit in the United States.

Ronaldo moved to Juventus from Real Madrid for £99.2m in July. He has won the Ballon d’Or – awarded to the world’s best footballer – in 2008, 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017.

The Portuguese international has previously dismissed the allegation as “fake news” and earlier in October issued a statement through his Twitter account in which he “firmly” denied the accusation.

His lawyers claim documents used in Der Spiegel’s investigation have been “completely fabricated” but the publication says it has “no reason” to doubt the authenticity of key documents used in its story.

The chief magistrate, Mr Tajudeen Elias, ordered that the boys be remanded at Borstal Training Institution in Adigbe, Abeokuta, pending the receipt of legal advice from the Department of Public Prosecutions (DPPs).

The prosecutor, Sgt. Hafsat Ajibode, told the court that the boys committed the offences in July 2018 at Makoko area of Lagos State.

She said that the boys gang-defiled their 15-year old classmate at her resident.

“The boys claimed that they came to visit their female classmate at her house while her parents were not around.

“They offered her a drink which was suspected to contain some sleeping pills and that was the last the girl remembered when she became conscious.

“She raised an alarm which led to the arrest of the accused.

“The girl has since been traumatised and hospitalized as a result of the incident,” she said.

She said that the offences contravened Sections 260 (1) (2) (4), 261, 263 (1) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The case was adjourned until Jan.16 for mention.

Borstal Training Institution is where juvenile offenders are remanded.
