Judge drops sentence for Mexican woman convicted of killing rapist

An indigenous woman in Mexico who was sentenced to six years and two months for killing her rapist may not go back to prison, as a judge suspended her sentence.

The judge suspended criminal proceedings at the request of the public prosecutor’s office, which reviewed the case again and decided to withdraw the charges.

The relatives of the deceased man can appeal.

The woman, known as Roxana R, was found guilty on May 15 of using excessive force to defend herself against her rapist in 2021.

According to the report, the woman, 23, first knocked the perpetrator unconscious, strangled him, and finally tried to dismember the body.

She kept the body for at least 20 hours and then brought it to the street in a plastic bag.

The court acknowledged that the woman acted in self-defence when she killed her attacker in 2021, but said she used excessive force.

When the verdict came down, the woman said “it was my life or his life.”

She said she feared for her life and “only wanted to defend her life from a rapist.”

The single mother from the southern state of Oaxaca, who women’s organisations supported, spent nine months in pre-trial detention before being released for the duration of the trial.

60-year-old Nigerian serial rapist pastor jailed 34 years in UK

A Nigerian pastor, Michael Oluronbi, has been jailed for 34 years in the United Kingdom for defiling children and sexual assault.

A Birmingham Crown Court handed down the sentence after he was found guilty of the offence.

Oluronbi, 60 was convicted of raping some children for a period of 20 years. He was said to have committed the act during religious bathing rituals he claimed would wash their sins away and cleanse them from evil spirits.

His wife Juliana Oluronbi, who arranged abortions after four girls became pregnant, was jailed for 11 years.

Both were found guilty by jurors at Birmingham Crown Court after a trial in January, BBC reports.

The trial heard Oluronbi had victims stand naked in a bowl of water to undergo what he called “spiritual bathing”.

He claimed it would cleanse their souls and protect them from the devil.

But Philip Bradley QC, prosecuting, told the trial Oluronbi’s true purpose “was to serve his sexual gratification”.

In some cases, he added, the offending “progressed to repeated rapes, on many occasions leading to unwanted pregnancies and terminations”.

Oluronbi was arrested at Birmingham Airport last May, while trying to leave the country for Nigeria.

The defendant, of Orchard Drive, Longbridge, told police “the devil made me do it” after his arrest.

Judge Sarah Buckingham, sentencing, said Oluronbi’s crimes “must be one of the worst cases of sexual abuse of multiple children to come before the courts”.

“You did this because you are an arrogant, selfish and vain man,” she said.

In statements read to the court one of the victims, now in her thirties, said Oluronbi had “taken my innocence, my youth and my purity as a child”.

Another said: “I used to eat soap until I was physically sick so I could get rid of this man’s mark on me inside and out”.

A third woman said she no longer attended church.

“I don’t think I can ever place my faith in religion again. I trusted him”, she said, “because he was like God on earth.”

The actress wrote this on her Instagram on Wednesday. “The rate of rape in this generation is alarming all over the world .You don’t force anyone ,least of all on a child and sodomize the victims as well. Who raised you animals? What excuse do you have damaging a four –year- old? Any one caught should be sentenced to life imprisonment. I feel sad for the people who are scared to talk.”
The actress, who had gone through some challenges including health, also gave advice on the need to let go the past.

  • When it’s time, I will reveal my rapist’s identity- Ifu Ennada

Evicted BBNaija housemate and actress,Ifu Ennada created a frenzy months back when she revealed on the ongoing BBNaija reality Tv show that she was raped by an entertainer in the Nigerian entertainment industry.

Many felt indigenous Nigerian rapper, CDQ was the culprit. However, the actress has debunked the claims.

Speaking in a chat with Punch, she said: “I was the one who was raped and I didn’t talk about it until recently. When I am ready to reveal the rapist’s identity, I will do so. For now, it is no one’s business. I don’t know what gave people the impression that it was CDQ. I didn’t mention CDQ’s name. I don’t understand people,” she added.

Speaking further she revealed that she desired to go back to the BBNaija house when a second chance was created by the organizers, but lost the opportunity due to low votes.

“It has not been very smooth since leaving BBNaija, but it has been good. I miss the house; sometimes I miss the diary session with Big Brother and I miss the Saturday night parties. I wished I was one of the two persons who returned to the house. I even campaigned for people to vote for me and my people tried for me, but I didn’t make it. I had the third highest vote. Though I am aware that people felt the voting process was tampered with, I don’t believe that. I feel they showed us how the people truly voted.”

  • Rape victim collaborates with rapist to deliver a speech

Rape victim collaborates with rapist to deliver a speech

This sounds weird, but it is true. This is the story of Thordis Elva who was raped by her boyfriend ,Sam Stranger in 1996. The duo collaborated to deliver a speech at TED Talk sharing on rape culture and their own experience. They met when Stranger was visiting Elva’s native Iceland on an exchange program from Australia. Elva was 16 at the time and Stranger was 18.

One thing led to another and they started dating. One night, they became intoxicated at a school event which made Stranger take her home and putting her to bed

According to her:” Stranger took off my clothes and got on top of me.My head had cleared up, but my body was still too weak to fight back, and the pain was blinding. In order to stay sane, I silently counted the seconds on my alarm clock. And ever since that night, I’ve known that there are 7,200 seconds in two hours. Despite limping for days and crying for weeks, this incident didn’t fit my ideas about rape like I’d seen on TV. Tom wasn’t an armed lunatic; he was my boyfriend. And it didn’t happen in a seedy alleyway, it happened in my own bed. By the time I could identify what had happened to me as rape, he had completed his exchange program and left for Australia. So I told myself it was pointless to address what had happened. And besides, it had to have been my fault, somehow.

She also says girls are often blamed whenever they get raped. The society often says they get raped for a reason.

I was raised in a world where girls are taught that they get raped for a reason. Their skirt was too short, their smile was too wide, their breath smelled of alcohol. And I was guilty of all of those things, so the shame had to be mine. It took me years to realize that only one thing could have stopped me from being raped that night, and it wasn’t my skirt, it wasn’t my smile, it wasn’t my childish trust. The only thing that could’ve stopped me from being raped that night is the man who raped me — had he stopped himself.”

Stranger captures the strange experience this way:” I have vague memories of the next day. The after effects of drinking, a certain hollowness that I tried to stifle. Nothing more. But I didn’t show up at Thordis’s door. It is important to now state that I didn’t see my deed for what it was. To be honest, I repudiated the entire act in the days afterwards and when I was committing it. I disavowed the truth by convincing myself it was sex and not rape. And this is a lie I’ve felt spine-bending guilt for.

“I broke up with Thordis a couple of days later, and then saw her a number of times during the remainder of my year in Iceland, feeling a sharp stab of heavyheartedness each time. Deep down, I knew I’d done something immeasurably wrong. But without planning it, I sunk the memories deep, and then I tied a rock to them.

“What followed is a nine-year period that can best be titled as “Denial and Running.” When I got a chance to identify the real torment that I caused, I didn’t stand still long enough to do so. Whether it be via distraction, substance use, thrill-seeking or the scrupulous policing of my inner speak, I refused to be static and silent.

“And with this noise, I also drew heavily upon other parts of my life to construct a picture of who I was. I was a surfer, a social science student, a friend to good people, a loved brother and son, an outdoor recreation guide, and eventually, a youth worker. I gripped tight to the simple notion that I wasn’t a bad person. I didn’t think I had this in my bones. I thought I was made up of something else. In my nurtured upbringing, my loving extended family and role models, people close to me were warm and genuine in their respect shown towards women. It took me a long time to stare down this dark corner of myself, and to ask it questions.”
