DMX: How late rapper battled cocaine addiction, aspired to preach gospel

Before the sad occurrence that saw him breathe his last on Friday at White Plains Hospital in New York, DMX was one of America’s most successful rappers of the late 1990s and 2000s whose accomplishments earned him a place in music history when he became the first artiste whose five albums hit number one in the Billboard charts.

He sold 14 million copies in the US and earned three Grammy nominations just as he was ushered into his career as the star of blockbuster movies like ‘Belly’, ‘Romeo Must Die’, ‘Exit Wounds’, ‘Cradle 2 the Grave’, and ‘Last Hour’. After the death of rap heavyweights such as Tupac and Biggie, DMX became an unrivaled reigning king of hardcore rap. The musician was also adjudged a rare commodity; a commercial powerhouse with street integrity to show off.

DMX was born Earl Simmons in Mount Vernon, New York on December 18, 1970, to Arnett Simmons and Joe Barker, who were 19 and 20 respectively when they gave birth to him. He was the second child of Arnett, who gave birth to two daughters and two stillborn sons. As Barker didn’t want Simmons to keep DMX, she cut off contacts with the family as soon as he was born. As a child, DMX suffered bronchial asthma and was often rushed to the emergency room due to breathing difficulties.

At a point in his childhood, DMX was hit by a drunk driver while crossing the street and suffered minor wounds. He had argued that his family could have received up to a $10,000 settlement but his mum refused to open a case over claims that it went against her faith. DMX went through a disjointed childhood that included being beaten by his mum and her boyfriends. At the end of fifth grade, DMX was kicked out of school and sent to Julia Dyckman Andrus Children’s Home for 18 months. At 14, DMX began wandering the streets of Yonkers (where they had settled) to escape abuse.

He found comfort in making friends with stray dogs that walked the streets at night. After some time, his mother sent him to a boys’ home. There, he bonded with other students from New York over their shared love for hip hop music. After performing for his friends, they encouraged him to continue writing music at the behest of his teacher.

Returning home to his mum, DMX met Ready Ron, a local rapper who sought to become Earl’s partner after observing his beatboxing skills. DMX got his stage name from an instrument he had used at the boys’ home, the Oberheim DMX drum machine.

DMX got his start in music in 1984 beatboxing for Ready Ron. After his time in prison, he began writing his own lyrics and would perform at the local rec centre for young children. After going to prison again in 1988, he began taking rapping more seriously, dedicating almost all of his free time to writing lyrics and also meeting and rapping with K-Solo while incarcerated. When DMX was released that summer, he began producing and selling his own mixtapes.

The Yonkers-bred MC thereafter became popular with ‘It’s Dark and Hell is Hot’, his 1998 debut album, which sold more than 5 million copies

He rapped over instrumentals from other songs, sold them on street corners, and built a local fan base in New York. In 1991, DMX recorded his first demos ‘Unstoppable Force and Three Little Pigs’. Columbia Records signed him to its subsidiary label Ruffhouse a year later before the rapper released his debut single ‘Born Loser’. It was gathered that the single did not receive much airplay, prompting the record label to cancel the rapper’s contract.

He did a second single ‘Make a Move’ in 1994 and made an appearance alongside Jay Z, Ja Rule, and Mic Geronimo on the classic underground track ‘Time To Build’ on Mic Geronimo’s debut album in 1995. He also appeared on LL Cool J’s single ‘4, 3, 2, 1′ in 1997. His additional guest spots were on Mase’s singles ’24 Hrs. to Live’ and ‘Take What’s Yours’. This was as The LOX’s single ‘Money, Power & Respect’ created a strong buzz for DMX who was — at that time — an unsigned rapper.

In 2009, DMX claimed that he would pursue evangelizing in New Jersey but will also continue to produce music. He completed a Gospel album prior to his incarceration. It was gathered that he had semi-retired to study the Bible more in an effort to give sermons.

Although he admitted to being spiritual as opposed to religious, DMX had further clarified the statement, saying: “I will not be a priest. I will be a pastor. I’m already a deacon. I will be a pastor.” In 2012, he added that he hoped to soon give his first sermon in a church setting and bring people closer to God.

But over the course of his music career, DMX also spoke of his cocaine addiction which began at age 14 after he smoked a marijuana cigarette laced with it. The rapper, who had undergone rehab, claimed he was also battling bipolar disorder. In February 2016, he was found unresponsive in a Ramada Inn parking lot in Yonkers. He was resuscitated by first responders and given Narcan before being rushed to the hospital. A witness said he ingested some substance before collapsing, but police found nothing illegal on the property. DMX’s last rehab was in 2019 after he finished a 12-month sentence for tax evasion.

On April 4, 2021, Nakia Walker, DMX’s former manager, revealed that the rapper was in a “vegetative state” with lungs and brain failure and no current brain activity. Three days later, Steve Rifkind, his manager, said he was in a coma and that he was set to undergo tests to determine his brain’s functionality which would allow his family to “determine what’s best from there”. The musician was however pronounced dead on April 9, 2021.

The acclaimed rapper had fifteen children. He was married to his childhood friend Tashera Simmons in 1999 and they had four children but separated in 2010. His fifteenth child was with his girlfriend Desiree Lindstrom in 2016 after his extramarital affairs.

BREAKING: Iconic American rapper, DMX is dead

Popular rapper, DMX who helped build the Ruff Ryders label into a powerhouse during the late 1990s, has passed.

According to a statement from his family, he died today at White Plains Hospital after being on life support for the past few days.

“Earl was a warrior who fought till the very end. He loved his family with all of his heart and we cherish the times we spent with him. Earl’s music inspired countless fans across the world and his iconic legacy will live on forever. We appreciate all of the love and support during this incredibly difficult time,” said the statement. He was 50 years old.

DMX had a signature rasp to his voice. He delivered his lines with a desperate aggression that propelled his debut album It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot to multi-platinum level sales. He followed that up with a string of chart-topping albums that included songs like “Party Up (Up In Here).” His rise in music also gave way to acting, in movies such as Belly, Romeo Must Die, and Cradle 2 the Grave.

DMX was born Earl Simmons in Mount Vernon, NY in 1970. He told the podcast People’s Party with Talib Kweli that as a child he suffered from asthma that would keep him awake at night. In his 2003 autobiography, E.A.R.L: The Autobiography of DMX, he wrote that he was abused and neglected by his young mother. He ended up living in a children’s home. When he was 14, he told Kweli a mentor of his tricked him into smoking crack. He struggled with drug addiction for the rest of his life.

In It’s Dark and Hell is Hot, DMX reflected on his past: the robberies he committed and violence he enacted. It also introduced the world to his love of dogs, repeatedly using dog imagery and sometimes literally barking ad-libs. Later in his autobiography he would write about being a teenager and care of stray dogs, tending to them as a way of coping with his troubled home life.

Shortly after his debut, he began acting in movies. In 1998 he and Nas co-starred in the crime movie Belly, where DMX played a young criminal on the rise. But as DMX’s fame grew, so did his addictions. When he appeared on the reality tv show Iyanla Fix My Life, he said that whatever problems he had with drugs before, “it was nothing like it was when I got money.” He was also arrested multiple times for drug possession, animal cruelty, and tax fraud.

DMX was a devout Christian, and would end his live sets with a prayer. In a 2019 interview with GQ, he talked about being so overwhelmed after shows, he’d need a private moment of his own to pray. “I just take a minute for myself and just, I thank Him, I praise Him. And I’m like, ‘Thank you, thank you.’ I’m like, ‘Who am I to deserve this?’ We all bleed the same blood.”

Controversial rapper, Kanye West becomes richest black man in U.S. history

Controversial United States rapper, Kanye West has become the richest black man in US history, with his net worth reported to have reached $6.6bn (£4.7bn).

The new total has been reported by Bloomberg and gives Kanye West a commanding lead over the likes of investor and businessman Robert F Smith and basketball legend Michael Jordan.

After claiming he was $53m (£38m) in debt just three years ago, the rapper and fashion tycoon became a certified billionaire last year with the help of his successful apparel and sneaker brand, Yeezy, and a new multi-year contract with clothing retailer Gap.

According to Bloomberg, West’s Yeezy brand – and deals with Gap and sportswear giant Adidas – is valued at $3.2bn (£2.2bn) to $4.7bn (£3.4bn).

The new Yeezy Gap line, set to release later this summer, is expected to be worth more than $970m (£694m).

As he is the sole owner of the Yeezy company, much of Kanye West’s personal net worth comes from there.

Some also comes from the $1.7bn (£1.5bn) that he earns from additional assets – including his significant investment into his soon-to-be ex-wife’s Skims label.

Reality star Kim Kardashian who herself became a billionaire last summer – recently filed for divorce from the Gold Digger rapper after nearly seven years of marriage.

TMZ said sources described the divorce as “amicable”, saying Kardashian West is asking for joint legal and physical custody of the couple’s four children, which Westis “fine” with.

Despite the COVID pandemic, sales for Yeezy’s Adidas trainers continued to grow, rising by 31% to nearly $1.7bn (£1.5bn) in annual revenue last year and making Yeezy $191m (£136.7m) in royalties, according to a private document reviewed by Bloomberg.

An unaudited balance sheet of West’s finances has also revealed that West has $122m (£87m) in cash and stock, while his entire music catalogue is worth $110.5m (£79m).

Popular rapper, Vector Tha Viper, has taken to his Twitter handle to reveal that awards do not mean anything to him anymore.

His opinions come shortly after he missed out on being nominated at the 2020 Headies Awards.

Vector said that he stopped entering for awards because he does not want to compete with other rappers.

He wrote, “As for the Headies. I stopped entering for it because I don’t want to compete with rappers (I can easily beat them on a one on one but that was Unilag). I’m grown now. Awards actually don’t mean anything to me anymore. Let new people win awards.”

He further disclosed that he had to intentionally stop trying to outdo veteran Nigerian rap artiste, Mode 9. He tweeted, “I intentionally removed myself from the idea that I have to outdo mode9. It’s not necessary. Ask him about me in the studio and he will tell you. I don’t care about clout. I just want to make music. Fuck money too. That shit comes and goes anyway.

He continued, “Make Hennessy tell una how much my deal is worth as a rapper? Lol. But that’s not me. I can brag but it only brings more fake people around you anyways. Stay humble and live easy. Accolades are just accolades. Peace to everybody who deserves peace.”

Police in its statement said Kukhal used a knife, hammer, hacksaw, plastic bowl and chopping board to chop off the rapper’s body.

The woman’s lawyer, Irina Skurtu, however, denied reports that the deceased body parts were kept in the washing machine and also disputed that the rapper’s mother-in-law, who has been ordered not to leave St Petersburg, had been involved in the crime.
