  • I don’t believe in award shows- AKA

South African rapper and entertainer, AKA has declared that he doesn’t believe in the concept of award shows.

The outspoken rapper made this known in a series of tweets. He noted that the greatest award is when his fans enjoy his brand of music.

Hear him: “Please stop attacking the SA Hip Hop Awards. I didn’t submit. For my own personal reasons I no longer submit for award shows because I no longer believe in the concept of awards. The greatest reward or award is you rocking with me and my music. I wish them all the best ??

“I have arguably the biggest album and without argument … the biggest Hip Hop or even local song this year. Period. I don’t need an award to confirm that. All I need is your support. ??????

I am simply not interested in people telling us who is great and who is deserving and who isn’t anymore. Bob Marley and Tupac never won Grammies. I also don’t look down on people who DO submit or care about awards. It’s just my preference at this point in my career.

“I appreciate all the amazing accolades and awards I have received over the years. All the votes from you and all the recognition from the industry and my peers. I am just not into awards right now. Good luck to all nominees!!!”.

In 2011 AKA’s song “Victory Lap” won Channel O’s Most Gifted Hip-Hop Video at the 7th annual Channel O Music Video Awards and at the 18th South African Music Awards AKA was awarded Male Artist of the Year and Best Street Urban Music Album.AKA has opened for Kanye West, Snoop dogg, Rick Ross, 2 Chainz, Big Sean and Kendrick Lamar in their South African tours. He has won many awards including “Best Street Urban Music Album” and “Male Artist of the Year” at the 18th South African Music Awards (SAMA)

  • It is unfair to pressure rappers to make music in a certain way- Falz slams M.I

Rapper and comic actor, Falz has reacted over M.I Abaga’s new single where he charged rappers to sitck to the art of hip-hop and leave singers to do their singing.

Falz who took his fans by surprise by unveiling a new album on his ‘27th’ birthday stated that artistes shouldn’t be restricted in the expression of their craft.

Hear him: ”It is very unfair to pressure artistes to make music a certain way. I have never ever been a fan of directing a creative on how to make their art. Art should be made the way it comes to you. You shouldn’t have to bend yourself to make a specific style of music. At the end of the day, we need to find that perfect balance. This isn’t a hobby, this is our lives. It’s what we do to make a living and pay bills. That commercial value is also very important just as well as not over-diluting the spirit of your music. And if you ask me, I think I am doing that, and doing well for myself.”

Falz who is a sought after Nigerian rapper has been lashed by hip-hop pundits for his humorous style of delivery .Some believe he is not entirely a rapper. He has a reply for such individuals.

“I am happy that people don’t regard me as a core rapper. Because if I am to carry Hip-hop on my head, more than the person that invented Hip-hop, then where am I going to place myself. There are conversations about rappers needing to fix up their lives, and who are commercialize their style.

“But who defined Hip-hop for us? Hip-hop as far as we are concerned in Africa is what flavour that we add to it. The original Hip-hop we imported is not the way we are doing it. It is very important as an artiste not to tie yourself to any genre. You are just going to kill yourself. If you have to sit down every day and think about being straight hardcore stuff, it’s not really going to help you.”

I don’t focus on winning awards- Ycee

Self -proclaimed Omo Alhaji, Ycee is one wave-making rapper who has made a name for himself in a short while. Losing the prestigious Headies Next Rated Award to Mr Eazi in December 2016 was one of the downsides of his blossoming music career.

However, the acclaimed rapper has said winning awards is not his motivation.

Hear him:”I am here to do music and that’s my primary calling. Awards and other recognitions are just like icing on the cake. Inasmuch as my fans love what I’m doing and I’m able to keep them satisfied, then I’m good. However, not getting the award is a form of motivation for me. It is not like I am not good enough but I always strive to get better, and I will continue doing that. Don’t also forget that I won the Rookie of the Year award at the same Headies two years ago, so I guess one cannot win it all. I can assure my fans that the best is yet to come from me. I have a lot of great things in stock and they would be unveiled at the right time.”

  • I have lost a lot for speaking my mind-Ruggedman

Popular rapper Michael Ugochukwu a.k.a Ruggedman, broke into the music industry through his controversial song, Ehen where he condemned some prominent Nigerian artistes.

Since then Ruggedy baba as he is fondly called by his fans, has continued to speak up on injustice whenever he deems fit. Against all odds, the rapper has continued to sustain his relevance.

Unknown to many , being outspoken has cost Ruggedman a lot. He made this known in a recent chat with newsmen. According to him:”I am happy that many of the things I spoke about in those days are still happening. I have always been campaigning for the use of our mother tongue in our songs. When I started, some people felt I was just a troublemaker; they didn’t know that I was fighting for the industry. Like I said in another of my songs, I will always speak my mind; whether people agree with it or not. I stand on the side of the truth and that is what I’m known for. I wouldn’t go out of my way to diss anyone; I will just say the things that people know but don’t want to say.

Truly, I have lost a lot for speaking my mind, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Now, we all know that Nigerian songs have taken over the whole African continent. I can confidently say that I’m the first rapper to make money off rap music in Nigeria.”

Speaking on when he would be getting married, he said:”I have chosen to keep my relationship, and my private life in general away from the press. I have vowed not to have kids out of wedlock and I am bidding my time to do the right thing.”
