Rashford can become regular starter again – Rangnick

Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick says there is a way back into the starting line-up for Marcus Rashford.

The England winger has been relegated to super-sub duties in recent games.

Rashford came on to score in recent wins over Brentford and West Ham United in the Premier League.

“We have a lot of wingers, we have a lot of outstanding players in that position,”said the interim manager in his press conference.

“Jadon (Sancho) was not available today but we have a lot of players for those two positions (striker and winger) and Marcus is one of them.

“Right now, yes, he has scored twice in consecutive games when he came from the bench but, of course, his ambition is to play regularly from the start again.

“It is up to him. If he continually plays on a high level and keeps scoring goals, of course this is the best way to get back into the team and play from the beginning.”

“He is one of the top strikers in England. He is an English international who regular played in the Euros,” he added.

“We all know what kind of quality he has. He has got almost everything that a modern striker needs. He has got the pace, the skills, he has got the size, the physicality of the striker and in the end it is all about confidence for strikers.

“I am pretty sure that those two goals have raised the level of confidence within Marcus. Now it is about taking the next steps and showing that on a regular basis.

“It is about continuity now. I think he can play a very important role for the rest of the season for us.”

EPL: Marcus Rashford snatches late win for Man Utd

Marcus Rashford scored the winner with virtually the last kick of the game as Manchester United leapfrogged West Ham into the Premier League’s top four.

It seemed certain to be another frustrating afternoon for the hosts, who were stifled by the Hammers’ organisation and came no closer than Fred’s second-half effort that was saved by Alphonse Areola.

But with less than 30 seconds of the three minutes of injury time remaining, United broke and in a move that involved all three substitutes, Edinson Cavani held his run to remain onside as he collected Anthony Martial’s short pass before rolling a cross to the far post, where it was converted by Rashford.

The result was harsh on the Hammers. In a game of few chances, Jarrod Bowen drove a shot into the side-netting before Tomas Soucek’s glancing header bounced just wide of the far post with four minutes remaining.

But Rashford had the final word as United secured back-to-back wins for the first time under Ralf Rangnick.

The result takes United into the top four for the first time in three months, with the Hammers dropping down to fifth, although Tottenham and Arsenal could overtake them if they win their games on Sunday.

  • Rashford speaks on dressing room crisis at Man Utd

Rashford speaks on dressing room crisis at Man Utd

Marcus Rashford has said that he is ‘disappointed’ with his performances of recent for Manchester United and the reports questioning the commitment of the players to manager Ralf Rangnick and the club.

The club is going through a very slow start to life under Rangnick, with many pundits writing them off.

Most recently Manchester United fell 1-0 in front of their home fans to Wolves leaving the Red Devils in seventh place in the table.

There have been reports of a crisis rocking the dressing room and suggestions of division among the players with as many as 17 of them being unhappy.

But in a post on Twitter, Rashford said he is not unhappy at Manchester United, only that he is disappointed at himself following his recent poor displays on the pitch.

He wrote: “I read something earlier that said I’d been quiet on here but what can I say that will make this better other than showing you on the pitch?

“We’ve all been disappointed with recent performances and we’ve been disappointed with the news coverage questioning our commitment to not only the manager and the coaching staff but the club.

“I have endless respect for both and I’m looking forward to bettering my game under the staff at Manchester United.

“I’m not sulking, I’m not unhappy, am I disappointed in some of my recent performances? Of course, I am. I’m my own biggest critic.

“It’s been a tough start but I’m determined to prove my worth. My dedication and my desire to be here should never be in question. I love this club.”

    Marcus Rashford delivers surgery update

Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford is upbeat after undergoing successful shoulder surgery.

Rashford’s last match was with England in the Euro 2020 final and, after further assessments on his injury were made and following his summer break, his surgery took place last week.

“Thank you for all the well wishes,” he posted to social media.

“I had my surgery on Friday morning and everything went very well. A little sore but other than that I’m feeling good.

“Hope you’re all having a great day!”

Euro 2020: What Paul Pogba told England penalty flops

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has sent his support to England trio Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka.

Arsenal youngster Saka missed the decisive penalty in England’s shootout lost to Italy in the Euro 2020 final.

It came after Rashford and Sancho also failed to convert from the spot.

Taking to Instagram, Pogba said: “I am PROUD OF YOU. You win some, you lose some.

“You took the courage to take the penalties and you showed your worth to help your country reach the final.

“We cannot tolerate or stand for racism anymore and we will never stop combatting it. You boys should hold your heads high and be proud of your confidence. You are examples of this beautiful game. Never forget that. Be proud of yourselves, the World of football is proud of you!”

  • Rashford drops Man Utd transfer hint for Sancho

Rashford drops Man Utd transfer hint for Sancho

Marcus Rashford has dropped a fresh hint England teammate Jadon Sancho is on his way to Manchester United.

United and Borussia Dortmund have been locked in negotiations over the winger for a second summer in a row but are now close to reaching an agreement for the 21-year-old.

A deal is likely to be announced imminently with Dortmund, after refusing to budge on their £110m valuation last year, dropping the asking price and willing to accept a fee of £73m plus £4m in add-ons following several weeks of talks.

Rashford and Sancho are currently on international duty with England at Euro 2020 but both were unused substitutes during Tuesday’s victory over Germany at Wembley.

However, Rashford was straight on social media after the game and seemingly dropped a huge hint that Sancho is on the cusp of completing a move to Old Trafford.

A United fan messaged Rashford directly, asking him to “announce Sancho”.

Rashford replied 13 minutes later with “Yes x”.

  • Rashford penalty kick seals win after England booed for taking knee

Rashford penalty kick seals win after England booed for taking knee

England beat Romania 1-0 thanks to a Marcus Rashford penalty kick in their final pre-Euro 2020 warm-up match on Sunday.

But the game was once again marred by supporters booing the Three Lions for taking the knee.

Fans had jeered England players for showing support for the Black Lives Matter movement at the start of the 1-0 win over Austria earlier in the week.

But, with Gareth Southgate clearly explaining on Saturday that his team’s gesture was motivated by racial injustice rather than politics, boos were still clearly audible once more at the Riverside Stadium.

Potentially deflated by those fans’ blatant disregard for the team’s feelings, perhaps England’s rather subdued start in Middlesbrough had a straightforward explanation.

Southgate’s side did not pose much of a threat until Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Jadon Sancho hit the crossbar after the half-hour mark.

The visitors looked as much of an attacking threat as England, but good work from Jack Grealish earned a penalty kick with 22 minutes to go.

Rashford – captain for the day – converted with aplomb, with Jordan Henderson unable to follow suit from the penalty kick spot a little later.

Romania looked much sharper than England initially, with Denis Alibec shooting just wide of the top-right corner and Razvan Marin firing at Sam Johnstone following a flowing move.

Florin Nita in the visitors’ net had very little to do before having the bar come to his rescue in the 32nd minute.

It kept out a ferocious Calvert-Lewin header, and then again six minutes later as Sancho’s bending effort following a clever offload by Grealish had left the goalkeeper looking helpless.

But Romania still posed a threat at the other end, with Deian Sorescu testing Johnstone after being released in behind the suspect Tyrone Mings.

An encouraging aspect was the performance of Rashford, who after a difficult spell at club level, did well in the 62nd minute as he collected Calvert-Lewin’s lay-off.

He burst into the Romania half before shooting wide on the stretch after a lung-busting run.

Rashford was decisive soon after, however, coolly slotting in a penalty kick after Grealish —- who was fouled on five occasions more than anyone else —- found himself tripped by Tiberiu Capusa.

Henderson, introduced at half-time for his first outing since February, passed up the chance to make it 2-0 from the penalty kick spot as Nita saved his kick.

This had followed a foul on Calvert-Lewin by Vlad Chiriches.

That came hot on the heels of Johnstone producing a wonderful stop to thwart Andrei Ivan, with England ultimately settling for the 1-0 win.

England now turn their attention to the Euros, with their campaign beginning against Croatia at Wembley on June 13.

  • Difficult to play under Jose Mourinho – Rashford

Difficult to play under Jose Mourinho – Rashford

Marcus Rashford has admitted that it was difficult for him to play his best football under former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho.

Rashford burst onto the senior stage at United when Louis van Gaal was in charge at Old Trafford in 2016, before having to adjust to life under a new boss after the Dutchman’s sacking at the end of that season.

Mourinho handed the England international a prominent role in his set-up after moving into the dugout, but he wasn’t able to deliver the goods in the final third on a consistent basis during the Portuguese’s two-and-a-half-year reign, which he puts down to being stifled from a creative standpoint.

Quizzed on whether Mourinho allowed his players to express themselves freely going forward, Rashford told BT Sport: “I think that’s when we play our best football (when we can be flexible).

“Under Jose I would say everything was a bit (points) ‘you play there, you play there, you play there’.

“And yeah, you can do a job, but it was difficult for me to play my best football.”

Rashford’s old team-mate Wayne Rooney also weighed in on Mourinho’s rigid matchday planning, recalling the time he was benched in favour of his fellow countryman for United’s 2-0 win over Chelsea in 2017-18.

“I remember a Chelsea game, I was on the bench. Marcus kept me out the team!” the Red Devils legend added on Rio Ferdinand’s Between the Lines show. “I remember he (Jose) played a back SIX.

“And I remember thinking, ‘Jose’s put Marcus up top on his own. Unless he runs in behind, Chelsea and David Luiz, with all that experience, if he comes to feet we’re in trouble.’”

  • Greenwood, Rashford need another year to learn from Cavani – Neville

Greenwood, Rashford need another year to learn from Cavani – Neville

Manchester United legend Gary Neville believes youngsters Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford need another year of learning from veteran Edinson Cavani.

The Red Devils needed both Cavani and Greenwood at their best against Tottenham at the weekend, where they came from behind to win 3-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.

Greenwood came on as a second half substitute for Rashford and assisted Cavani’s strike to make it 2-1, before scoring himself to make it 3-1.

Asked whether United should keep Cavani for another season, Neville told Sky Sports: “Tottenham had a throw with two minutes to go, and Cavani was moving between the centre-backs trying to stop the ball from being thrown in, and he’s organising where Greenwood should be. I thought: ‘Greenwood needs another year of Cavani being alongside him.’

“It inspired us as young players when you saw great players like Bryan Robson and Steve Bruce and Eric Cantona and Mark Hughes. And you see the best players in the world, or those who have been the best in the world like Cavani, doing his work like that in the 94th minute, someone like Mason Greenwood, who needs people who are mentors, good standards above him, who can coach him on the pitch, I just thought him and Marcus Rashford need another year of Cavani.”

On the potential of Greenwood in the coming seasons, Neville added: “I know I speak a lot about Greenwood, but I do think he’s a different level, with his composure and precision in the final third.

“I do think if Harry Kane gets injured, I look at that England centre-forward position and think: ‘Who has his composure?’

“I do think Greenwood can play centre-forward in international football, it’s whether he’s got enough time to impress Gareth Southgate with a few weeks to go.”

  • We’re here to win Europa League – Rashford

We’re here to win Europa League – Rashford

Marcus Rashford admits Manchester United must win the Europa League this season to be happy with their campaign.

United face AC Milan in the second leg of their last-16 clash on Thursday night following last week’s 1-1 draw, a potentially season-defining few days before a FA Cup tie at Leicester.

“That’s been the aim since we unfortunately got kicked out of the Champions League, the focus was to win the Europa League,” Rashford said.

“Anything less than that, I know the team and staff are not going to be happy.

    “We’ll do our absolute best.”
