EPL: Marcus Rashford fit after knee fit

Manchester United FC Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said Marcus Rashford was fit for Wednesday’s Premier League match with Sheffield United.

Rashford had a scan on his knee after the FA Cup win over Liverpool at the weekend but the England forward is set to play as United try to protect their two-point lead.

“He trained this morning. He is available for selection.

“He tweaked his knee a little bit. We are looking strong, which is a good place to be,” Solskjaer told reporters Tuesday.

Rashford reveals how Mourinho taught him to win penalties

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford says former manager Jose Mourinho made him more “savvy” in the penalty area.

It follows recent debates over United’s penalty count with Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp suggesting Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side had won more than his over a far shorter period.

The England striker, 23, said Mourinho changed his attitude in the box.

He added: “Jose said, ‘if you’re not savvy about the way you do it, then you are not going to get given it’.”

Mourinho left United in 2018 after two years in charge, and since Solskjaer’s first league match in December of that year, the side have been awarded the most Premier League penalties (27).

Last season United broke the record for the most spot-kicks awarded in a single Premier League season (14) and this campaign they have won 11 in all competitions.

“When you are making runs in behind or you are dribbling with the ball and you see a challenge coming, you don’t want to get tackled because you are looking at an opportunity to score a goal,” said Rashford, who won the Football Writers’ Association 2021 Tribute Award on Thursday.

“But there have been times when we have probably not got penalties.

“When Jose was manager, there were five or six times I can remember where I should have had a penalty.”

Upon being given the advice, Rashford said: “It was something in terms of development you have to learn and understand.”

The forward has won 11 penalties for United at domestic league and European level, although eight of those have come under the management of Solskjaer.

Man Utd can ‘still win a lot of trophies this year’ – Rashford

Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford insists they’re still capable of winning silverware this season.

United were bundled out of the Champions League this week.

Rashford commented: “We were in a tough group but we were in control of the group and we let it slip.

“We take responsibility for it but have to move forward. It’s something that’s in the past now. The reality of it is we can’t change what’s happened.

“We’re definitely disappointed but the only way we can come back from that is to win the next game. So that’s what we’re focusing on now and, yeah, the quicker we get the disappointment out of our system, the better.

“We can still win a lot of trophies this year – that was the aim at the beginning of the season. Just because we lose one game, and get knocked out of one tournament, it doesn’t change that. We can’t let one game cloud what we’ve got ahead of us.”

Why I gave up hat-trick for Rashford – Fernandes

Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes has revealed he passed up the opportunity to score a Champions League hat-trick to help the confidence of team-mate Marcus Rashford.

The Portuguese star scored twice in the Red Devils 4-1 rout of Istanbul Basaksehir at Old Trafford on Tuesday evening – with Rashford’s spot kick and Daniel James’ late strike putting the finishing touches on a solid performance.

Fernandes’ two goals came in the opening 20 minutes as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side got off to a flying start, but when Rashford was felled in the penalty area, the Portuguese handed the ball to his team-mate to get on the scoresheet instead of going for the hat-trick himself.

“Of course every player wants a hat-trick,” Fernandes told BT Sport post-match.

“But after the game in the Premier League I told Rashford that he could take the next one so I remembered that and also he’s one of the top scorers in the Champions League so it’s important for him to get the confidence.

“It doesn’t matter who takes the penalty as long as the team scores.”

UCL: Rashford scores hat-trick in Man Utd victory

Marcus Rashford came off the bench to score a clinical hat-trick as Manchester United continued their recent momentum by taking apart RB Leipzig in the Champions League.

England international Rashford came on just after the hour mark and netted three goals in 16 minutes, first running clear to calmly slot in, then smashing in a terrific second, before drilling home a third in stoppage time.

Teenage forward Mason Greenwood scored his first goal in the competition, latching onto Paul Pogba’s defence-splitting pass before drilling a precise, low finish into the far corner.

Greenwood produced another thumping effort straight at Peter Gulasci, while the visiting goalkeeper also kept out Anthony Martial’s poked effort.

But when Martial was tripped in the box with three minutes to go, he converted the penalty to score his first goal of the season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side backed up their excellent win at Paris St-Germain in their opening game by collecting another impressive three points to extend their unbeaten run to four games.

United’s backline had a comfortable night, David de Gea keeping out efforts from Christopher Nkunku and Ibrahima Konate.

In the Group H’s other game, last year’s runners-up Paris St-Germain picked up their first points with a 2-0 win at Istanbul Basaksehir.

  • Rashford strikes late as Man Utd sink PSG again

Rashford strikes late as Man Utd sink PSG again

Manchester United got their 2020/2021 UEFA Champions League campaign underway in emphatic style on Tuesday when Marcus Rashford’s late goal earned them a 2-1 victory at Paris St-Germain (PSG).

The result handed the French champions their first group stage home defeat in 16 years.

Rashford netted three minutes from time.

His goal came 18 months after scoring the decisive goal in a 3-1 win at PSG which sent Manchester United into the quarter-finals after a 2-0 first leg home defeat.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United side went ahead in the Group H encounter with a twice-taken Bruno Fernandes first half penalty kick.

Then, Anthony Martial’s own goal after the break gifted PSG the equaliser, before Rashford wrapped up the win with a precise low shot.

It was PSG’s first UEFA Champions League group stage defeat at the Parc des Princes in 25 games, having last lost 3-1 to CSKA Moscow in 2004.

Thomas Tuchel’s side looked nothing like the one which reached the final of last season’s competition as they lacked energy throughout in an empty Parc des Princes.

Paul Pogba surprisingly started on the Manchester United bench while Marquinhos was not included in PSG’s starting 11, having not recovered in time from a groin injury he sustained on Brazil duty.

He was replaced by Abdou Diallo, who fouled Anthony Martial in the box, handing the visitors a penalty which was converted by Fernandes on his second attempt.

Keylor Navas had saved the first kick, but it had to be retaken after the goalkeeper was judged to have moved off his goal line.

It was a poor start from PSG, who had two chances through Angel Di Maria and Layvin Kurzawa, but lacked aggression.

Fernandes went close to doubling Manchester United’s tally six minutes before the break with a thumping right-footed effort which Navas just tipped around the post.

Kylian Mbappe slalomed through the defence before curling a shot towards the top right corner.

But Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea stretched to tip the ball away three minutes into the second half.

Seven minutes later, Martial headed a Neymar corner-kick into his own net, handing PSG an unexpected equaliser.

The home side, who were also without the injured Mauro Icardi and Marco Verratti, started to find spaces in the defence of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side but they could not capitalise.

The visitors pressed harder in the closing stages and deservedly regained the advantage when Rashford beat Navas with a low diagonal shot into the bottom corner from just inside the box.

Manchester United next host RB Leipzig, who beat Basaksehir 2-0, while PSG will travel to Istanbul to face the Turkish side.

Rashford injured as United defeat Wolves in FA Cup replay

The ending of Manchester United’s FA Cup third-round replay against Wolves saw Marcus Rashford leave the being with what appeared to be a back injury.

The United striker landed awkwardly after tangling with Wolves full-back Matt Doherty and was replaced by Jesse Lingard in the 80th minute of the game, having come on as a sub himself in the 64th minute.

United went on to win the game 1-0 to set up a fourth-round tie against the winner of the replay between Watford and Tranmere Rovers.

Of more pressing concern to United will be the England striker’s availability for this weekend’s visit of bitter rivals Liverpool.

United host the Premier League leaders on Sunday, and it remains to be seen whether Rashford will be fit enough to take on Jurgen Klopp’s side, who have won 20 of their 21 league games this season.

They trail Liverpool by a mammoth 27 points but are just five points adrift of Chelsea who are in fourth place and visit Newcastle in the Saturday evening kick-off.

  • Rashford ruins Mourinho’s return to Old Trafford

Rashford ruins Mourinho’s return to Old Trafford

Marcus Rashford ruined José Mourinho’s return to Old Trafford as Manchester United beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 on Wednesday.
Rashford scored in each half to give Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Mourinho’s successor something to cheer.

Dele Alli scored Spur’s only goal in the 39th minute to cancel Rashford’s first goal in the 6th minute. But on return, the gangling striker had the last say via a penalty just four minutes after resumption of play.

With the victory, Solskjaer’s side leapfrogged Spurs, climbing to sixth in the Premier League table.

Spurs went into the match ahead of United after their mini-revival under their new boss, who replaced the sacked Mauricio Pochettino at the London club last month.

Struggling United had made their worst start to a season in 31 years but started brightly against the visitors, playing with energy and adventure and deserved their win.

Smiling manager Solskjaer hailed United’s “best performance for a long time”.

“I thought we dominated the game, could have, should have finished the game there and then (early). Some great saves by their ‘keeper,” he said.

“We’re best when we’re on the front foot,” he added.

“We’re best when we attack quickly, we’re best when we’re aggressive and I thought the boys followed the plan and executed their skills all night.”

Mourinho threw on unsettled midfielder Christian Eriksen in search of an equaliser as the game remained in the balance but despite some late pressure against a nervy United, Spurs left Old Trafford empty-handed.

Mourinho, sacked by United last December, won his first three matches in charge of Spurs, with his team scoring 10 goals in the process but he has problems to sort out at the back as he targets a Champions League spot.

United are also eyeing the top four despite a big gap to close. They remain eight points behind fourth-placed Chelsea and just seven points above the relegation zone.

  • Rashford penalty gives United edge over Leicester

Rashford penalty gives United edge over Leicester

Marcus Rashford put the frustration of a previous penalty miss behind him by scoring from the spot to give Manchester United a much-needed 1-0 win over Leicester at Old Trafford on Saturday.

But manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was left with more unanswered questions about his team’s prospects as Rashford’s first-half penalty secured just his team’s second win of the campaign.

Beaten on their last Old Trafford outing by Crystal Palace, there was little margin for error for United, or £80 million ($100million) defender Harry Maguire who was facing his former club for the first time since his summer move.

Magure was booed and subjected to insulting chants from his former club’s supporters throughout the 90 minutes.

There were still long, perplexing periods where United were distinctly second best and outplayed by a Leicester side who started the day in third place.

At least the United manager did not face a further inquisition over penalties after the chaotic start his team has made in that department.

Penalties have dominated much of the news agenda around United in the early stages of the campaign, with Paul Pogba and Rashford both guilty of costly misses that cost their team points against Wolves and Palace.

So when the Reds won their fourth spot kick in five games this season following a push by Caglar Soyuncu on Rashford after six minutes, all eyes were on the taker’s identity.

Pogba, however, was not a candidate for penalty responsibilities, having missed the game with an ankle injury, paving the way for Rashford, who failed from the spot in United’s last home fixture against Palace, with the duty.

The England forward showed admirable poise and composure by placing a right-footed kick into the bottom corner of the Leicester goal and sending Kasper Schmeichel the wrong way.

It was an ideal start for Solskjaer’s side, having endured an uncomfortable international break in which much had been made of their underwhelming start to the campaign.

That pressure had increased, with French pair Pogba and Anthony Martial unavailable for the visit of Brendan Rodgers’ side due to injury.

United went close to breaking the deadlock within two minutes.

They were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the Leicester area, which Andreas Pereira sent flying towards the top corner, forcing Schmeichel into an important and athletic stop.

But there was an almost immediate reminder of how vulnerable United’s defence has looked.

A long clearance from Schmeichel was allowed to bounce twice before James Maddison out-muscled Victor Lindelof and produced a shot which David de Gea did well to block.

The United goalkeeper was equally alert just before the half-hour when he tipped over a brilliant left-footed 25-yard volley from England defender Ben Chilwell following a half-cleared corner.

But either side of half-time saw Leicester start to take control of the game, with Youri Tielemans dominating midfield and Maddison becoming more influential.

The England squad man almost equalised, after 55 minutes, with a right-foot free-kick which sailed just wide of the home goal as United became increasingly bogged down.

There were chances on the counter-attack for Solskjaer’s side — Daniel James shooting over from 20 yards and Juan Mata being denied by Schmeichel — while Rashford’s 83rd-minute free-kick struck the City bar.

EPL: Rashford penalty helps Man Utd beat Leicester

Manchester United returned to winning ways and ended Leicester’s unbeaten start to the season by edging to a Premier League victory in a pulsating contest at Old Trafford.

After thrashing Chelsea 4-0 on the opening day, United had failed to win any of their last three games but took all the points to inflict Leicester’s first defeat of the campaign.

Marcus Rashford scored the only goal from the penalty spot in the eighth minute after being tripped by Leicester defender Caglar Soyuncu.

Rashford could have got another in the second half, but his wonderful free-kick from 30 yards curled over the wall and onto the angle of crossbar and post.

Defender Harry Maguire, given a torrid reception by the Leicester supporters, came close to scoring against his old side but headed straight at Kasper Schmeichel.

Leicester grew into the contest with the lively James Maddison twice coming close and left-back Ben Chilwell saw his dipping effort tipped over by David de Gea.

The result means United leapfrog their opponents into fourth place, while Leicester drop down to fifth.
