I will end insecurity before end of 2022 – Buhari assures

Insecurity will be brought to an end before the end of the year, President Muhammadu Buhari assured in Ile-Ife, Osun, on Saturday. He gave the assurance at the grand finale of the 2022 Olojo Festival.

The Olojo Festival is an ancient festival celebrated annually in Ile-Ife. It was once described by Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi as a festival that celebrates the Black race all over the world.

In a message sent through the Minister of Internal Affairs, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, the president said, however, that all Nigerians must be part of the war to end insecurity.

He noted that the war against insecurity could not be left to only the security agencies to handle.

“All of us must be concerned about security. The government will play its part; we must work together with security agencies to overcome the challenges of insecurity,’’ he said.

Buhari commended Oba Ogunwusi for contributing immensely to the fight against insecurity.

Earlier Osun’s Gov. Adegboyega Oyetola commended the Ooni for his will and capacity to sustain the rich heritage of his forebears.

Oyetola, who was represented by his deputy, Mr Benedict Alabi, said the annual Olojo Festival is phenomenal in the history of Ile-Ife and that of Yoruba race.

“This is arguably the only clime where the dawn of a new day is celebrated.

“Without mincing words, this festival clearly accentuates the place and the importance of Ile-Ife to creation and to humanity. We must all join hands together to celebrate it and accord it its rightful place,’’ he said.

He applauded the Ooni on the successful completion of the rites and the grand finale of this year’s festival.

Oyetola lauded Ooni Ogunwusi for his sacrifices and for interfacing with the ancestors by performing the necessary cleansing, productivity, security, and other rites for the benefit of the Black race and that of mankind generally.

The governor said his administration believed that the state’s economy should be repositioned by boosting cultural tourism for youth employment, wealth creation, and the preservation of Yoruba cultural heritage.

The governor challenged the people of Osun to intensify efforts at preserving the cultural heritage, entrench peaceful co-existence, and eschew politics of bitterness.

FG orders all flags in Nigeria, missions be flown at half-mast

The Federal Government has ordered that all flags in the country and missions abroad be flown at half-mast on Sept. 11 and Sept. 12, to honour the death of Queen Elizabeth 11.

The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, made this known in a statement on Friday in Abuja.

“We commiserate with the government and the people of UK and all the affected people of the Commonwealth and the global community. The Queen is dead, long live the King,” he said.

The death of Queen Elizabeth 11 was announced on Thursday (Sept. 8). She was the Queen of the UK and the other Commonwealth realms from Feb. 6, 1952, until her death in 2022.

Her reign of 70 years and 214 days was the longest of any British monarch and the second-longest recorded of any monarch of a sovereign country.

  • How Adeboye attempted mediating in Oyetola, Aregbesola’s rift – Lawmaker

How Adeboye attempted mediating in Oyetola, Aregbesola’s rift – Lawmaker

Rep. Lawrence Ayeni (APC-Osun) says Pastor Enoch Adeboye has tried to settle the political rift between Osun Gov. Gboyega Oyetola and his predecessor, Rauf Aregbesola, to no avail.

Adeboye, who is the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) and Aregbesola, the incumbent Minister of Interior, are both from Osun.

Ayeni, who represents Ilesha West/Ilesha East, Atakumosa East/Atakumosa West Federal Constituency of Osun, disclosed this in an interview with newsmen in Abuja on Monday.

It would be recalled that the state’s July 15 governorship election was won by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) due to the rift between the Ileri/Oluwa group and The Osun Progressive (TOP).

The IleriOluwa group is headed by the governor, while the TOP group is led by the minister.

Ayeni said a reconciliation meeting aimed at settling the rift between the two gladiators was actually fixed and billed to be mediated by Adeboye but one of them failed to show up.

The lawmaker said that although Adeboye initially declined to mediate in the duo’s political rift, saying he was not a politician, he later accepted the offer to mediate to settle it.

“Adeboye said that for him, he was not a politician and he was not going to poke-nose because of certain things but the two of them could not meet in his house.

“Had it been they were able to meet him may be the crisis would have been over.

“One of them did not even go for the scheduled meeting with Adeboye and Adeboye said well, that is it,” he said.

Rep Ayeni said that others like former interim Chairman of APC, Chief Bisi Akande, former Gov. Segun Osoba and even the Presidential candidate of APC, Sen Bola Tinubu also tried to settle the rift to no avail.

He said that all the APC House of Reps members from Osun also did all their best possible to also resolve the crisis but met a brick wall.

According to him, and up to the stage that the election was approaching, the chairman of the party called them, but if one side comes today, the other won’t come.

The lawmaker said that to date, he could not explain what could have happened between the duo, adding that it was better the rift was settled so that it would not affect the party in the general elections.

He called on the two to sit down and resolve the issue, adding that he was hopeful they would come together.

Ayeni said that the major thing that contributed to the APC’s loss was a lack of unity, adding that there was no unity in the party and any house that was divided against itself would not stand.

He said, “had it been we were united, the opposition could not have found their way even through the rigging, so we must ensure unity in the party.”

The lawmaker said that everyone had seen the result of the division in the governorship election and learned a lesson from it.

He added that Osun was critical to the South West and the party must put its house in order to win in 2023.

Ayeni said that the division could also affect his own re-election bid, having secured his return ticket as the party’s candidate; hence all hands must be on deck to win.

He said what surprised him most was that the APC was supposed to win Ijesha land with what he had done, “but we failed even in my local government.”

  • FG appeals with Canada to remove stringent conditions on visa

FG appeals with Canada to remove stringent conditions on visa

The Federal Government has appealed to the Canadian Government to remove the stringent conditions preventing Nigerians from procuring its visa.

Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola made the appeal when the Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, James Christoff paid him a courtesy visit on Wednesday in Abuja.

In a statement issued by the Deputy Director of Press and Public Relations in the ministry,  Mr Afonja Ajibola, the minister said easing the visa conditions would boost investment and accelerate economic growth in both countries.

Aregbesola also urged the Canadian Government to assist Nigeria with new technologies to ease the monitoring of Nigerian borders, high seas, land, railways and schools.

He said such technology would also facilitate quick response to security issues and enhance investments in Nigeria.

Earlier, Christoff said that the visit was to seek for bilateral cooperation with Nigeria in the areas of economy, security, technology, education and training of Immigration Service personnel.

The high commissioner said that the training of immigration personnel would ensure efficient border monitoring and enhance Nigeria’s security.

Christoff said that the Canadian Government would review some of its visa conditions, so that Nigerians can access Canada without difficulties.

Also, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr Shuaib Belgore, said strengthening partnership and cooperation between Nigeria and Canada would enhance development in both nations, including areas of security.

  • No passport booklets shortage in Nigeria – Minister

No passport booklets shortage in Nigeria – Minister

Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, says there is no passport booklets shortage in Nigeria, as the Federal Government has cleared all backlogs of passport applications.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Minister’s  Media Adviser, Mr Sola Fasure, on Tuesday in Abuja.

According to him,  the ministry has made efforts to make passports available to Nigerians.

“In 2021 alone, we provided 1.3 million passports to Nigerians. As at today, there is no booklets shortage in Nigeria.

“As at the second quarter of 2022, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has provided 645,000 passports out of the 750,000 applications received.

“To address the challenge of the backlog, we have sent 11,000 booklets to Ikoyi, 11,000 to Alausa and 8,000 to FESTAC centres in Lagos State.

“We have also sent sufficient booklets to all the centres nationwide to address this challenge,” the minister said.

He added that 10,000 passport booklets have been deployed to the new Port Harcourt passport production centre, to fast track passport issuance in the area.

The minister said that the centre would now be responsible for passport demands from Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom and Bayelsa.

Aregbesola said that with these efforts, there was no excuse again for delays and non-issuance of passport within reasonable period across the country.

The minister urged those seeking for passport to apply online to avoid being shortchanged by unscrupulous elements.

“I will urge applicants for the Nigerian passport to apply early enough before their travel date to avoid cutting corners and falling into the hands of scammers and other opportunists.

“It is important also that they apply by themselves through the NIS portal and not through touts and unscrupulous officials, which often brings heartaches,” he added.

Aregbesola said that a six weeks and three weeks window for fresh application and renewal respectively had been provided after biometric data capture, within which the passport will be ready.

“This timeline is to enable NIS investigate and validate the claims of applicants and confer integrity on the passport issued.

“It is a reasonable provision in passport administration by global standard. There is no wait-and-get passport service anywhere in the world,” the minister said.

He explained that in addition to the standardised timeline, the NIS had introduced tracking mechanism to enable applicants monitor the progress of their application.

“We are also introducing data capture centres all over the country before the end of 2022, to eliminate physical contacts with NIS officials,” he added.

He pledged that the Federal Government would continue to introduce necessary innovations in passport administration to serve applicants better.

  • ‘This is America, not Nigeria’: So what? – By Lexzy Ochibejivwie

‘This is America, not Nigeria’: So what? – By Lexzy Ochibejivwie

    By Lexzy Ochibejivwie

There is nothing wrong with pursuing the right cause. But pursuing the right cause in the wrong way is wrong. Whether in the US or wherever else in the world, there is really nothing wrong that cannot be solved with what is right.

Last Sunday, I stumbled onto a viral video on Facebook. The content of the video is an example of how not to respect a leader. It is an invasion on the privacy of an individual —- a pure insult on the dignity of the human person.

The content examples a complete misunderstanding of the right to free information. The video is sharp, clean-cut and has the appurtenances of a typical social media content —- brisk and gratifying. Two persons drive the content of the video.

Of course, It is only 3.05 (three minutes and five seconds) in length, and credited to the blog of a certain Kofoworola Omoshalewa.

The title of this video, couched in Yoruba, is noticeably one-shot and framed in the mode of a backbiter: Lobatan. Mr Aregbesola re ooooo, meaning: It is finished. Look at Mr Aregbesola.

The Gist in ‘Lobatan. Mr Aregbesola re ooooo’.

It is at an eatery in the US. Voice of a man is especially heard in the recording. Few whites are at the eatery. The camera moves slowly. A man is captured. The man’s attention is elicited with a casual compliment, ‘hello’. He turns to the recording.

The man is about to respond, but hesitates. He tries to continue to serve buffet. He hastens up on realizing that he is being recorded. He gingerly walks up to take a seat to enjoy his meal. Then, the recorder enters into a derisive laugh. He reveals the man as Aregbesola. He laughs, pointing out that his compliment is rebuffed by Aregbesola. He then boldly walks up to Aregbesola and tries to confirm his identity. Aregbesola asks him politely what the problem is.

Unsettled by the recording, he tells the man to introduce himself. Aregbesola also requests that the recorder states what he wants. He does not want anything. He goes on to say he thinks he recognizes Aregbesola. Aregbesola, on realizing that the recorder is a Nigerian politely asks him to take a seat besides him. Initially, he accepts. But changes his mind. He addresses Aregbesola with his official title, ‘Your Excellency’. He then goes on recording.

On seeing that the man is bent on recording, Aregbesola makes for his phone. He says Aregbesola has no right to it, and that this is America, not Nigeria. He repeats this and adds that Aregbesola cannot touch his phone. But Aregbesola reminds him calmly not to invade his privacy. But he would hear none of this. He claims that they are in a free country.

He also claims to do whatever he wishes. Aregbesola reminds him again that he can’t be recorded without his consent. He responds that not even Biden can stop him from using his phone to film. As Aregbesola again makes for his phone, covering his own face, he tells him not to touch him, and that should he do so, he will sue him. Their altercation becomes more intense. A woman besides Aregbesola interfares.

While Aregbesola insists that he cannot be recorded without his consent, the man insists he can. He insists that not even Biden can tell him not to record whenever he wishes to. He says they are in America, not Nigeria and becomes combative. The woman believes that the man is sick. By now, their altercation becomes full-blown. A third man tries to intervene. While the woman insists he has no right to record, he says he does. Aregbesola is heard expressing displeasure on his privacy invasion. The man turns his camera elsewhere., He goes on insisting that this is America, not Nigeria. End of recording.

    What’s wrong is wrong?

What’s wrong has never been right and will never be. The recorder is a Nigerian but US-based. His recording shows deep resentment for Nigerian leaders. He shows his resentment through Aregbesola. Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola) was Governor of Nigeria’s State of Osun ( 2010-2018). He is currently Nigeria’s Minister of the Interior, and has been since 2019. He deserves some respect.

By recording him without his permission, the recorder did not take due propriety. If one requires authorization from artists or authors to consume their products, how much more a live recording of a person of no less standing as Aregbesola? It is standard practice to obtain due authorization, before airing a person’s view or image.

Media organizations, recognized by law, do this. It is only procedural to obtain authorization before recording a person. What was he thinking? He did not show respect, not just for his status, but for the dignity of his person. Here is a man who leaves the shores of his country and gets embarrassed in another by his compatriot.

The experience must really be horrible. I am not oblivious of the fact that Nigerian leaders have not performed creditably. I know there are many in Nigeria who are boiling in anger. I know the hatred is palpable. I am however not sure, if it is expedient for someone to go the way the recorder did in expressing his displeasure.

There was neither tact nor pragmatism in his action. Even when Aregbesola tried to be warm and mature, the recorder kept on being surly. His actions were premeditated. It is bad enough today that Nigeria has a negative standing in global rating. It may not be necessary to complicate it. I am really not sure if what the recorder did has popular support. If his recording achieves anything at all is its failure to achieve anything enduring.

Mass movement is what Nigeria needs to go pass her leadership quagmire. It is not that kind of embarrassing show put up in the video. And in the end, what did the recorder achieve? Nothing of worth. Yet he blew away a rare opportunity. It is not always that a person runs into a Rauf Aregbesola in the US. He could have used the opportunity to remind Minister Aregbesola that Nigerians are determined to flush out failures in government positions, as the Sri Lankans did recently in the ousting of their President. In that country, going solo to reject bad leaders was never an option. The option they took was mass mobilization — that determination that the people are stronger together and can make great things happen, if they bond together.

Another thing the recorder hammered on is the freedom to record without permission. I am not sure this is right. Your right as an individual ends where another’s begins. Rights do not clash; they compliment. It is within one’s right to use a phone or any other gadget to obtain information. But I am not sure if it is one’s right to do so without the necessary procedures.

The recorder reserves the right to record, Aregbesola equally reserves the right to refuse being recorded. The right of the recorder in America is not made to cancel out that of Aregbesola. The end of the recorder’s right is the beginning of Aregbesola’s. The recorder believes President Biden can’t stop him from recording. Indeed, Biden can’t, provided the recording does not infringe on the dignity of another person.

Let’s call a spade what it is, the recorder does not fully understand the import of obtaining information by coercion or even by intimidation. What if Aregbesola presses charges against him on grounds of harassment or privacy invasion? The recorder deliberately ignores the fact that there is something as the individual’s right to privacy. And that is what Interior Minister Aregbesola continue to stress in the recording. Record any video of your choosing or even record me, if you will, but let there be authorization.

Yet another thing the recorder points out is that the United States is not Nigeria. Sure. In the US, people are free to live their lives. But freedom in that country is not reckless. Freedom has its limitations. The framers of rights know that rights are subject to abuse. They know that for law and order to thrive, rights must have limitations.

There is no country in the world that supports taking of laws into one’s hands. The recorder took laws into his hands. It would seem he has some grudges against Aregbesola, as a result, sets out to embarrass him. He confronted him, with the intention to provoke to anger, to disgrace him publicly. I am not sure this is right. Aregbesola may have erred or may be erring in his public duties. It is not enough ground to attempt to snatch his dignity. What Nigeria really needs at a time as this is not just leadership, but followership.

The question of followership has been glossed over. All fingers point to leadership failure, as the bane of Nigeria’s woes. Agreed, Nigeria has leadership problem. The problem of followership exists too. There is and always will be a seamless transition from followership to leadership. What kind of leader will the recorder become? Is it one that undermines the private life of followers? It is not right to disrespect public officials.

But it is right to make them know when they err. It is not equally right to invade one’s privacy, be you in the US or any other country. Not right too is the mistaken belief that because there is such a thing as freedom to obtain information, it can be done by any means possible.

It’s a known fact in Osun that immediately Adegboyega Oyetola mounted the saddle of leadership he dumped his successor.

On the day of the guber election it was widely reported that he had jetted out of Nigeria to Germany.

The lyrics pointedly explains the message in the viral video. Translated, “The drummers said that he was bragging(better still he de buga) he would be re-elected but now he has failed.
They ended with a proverb that translates to “” There is nobody that can dare to eat soap”

  • Osun 2022: Aregbesola’s loyalist quits APC, joins PDP

Osun 2022: Aregbesola’s loyalist quits APC, joins PDP

A former Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in Osun,  Mr Kolapo Alimi, on Wednesday, defected to Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Alimi, one of staunch the supporters of the Minister of Interior and former governor of the state, Mr Rauf Aregbesola, announced his defection at the PDP secretariat in Osogbo.

Alimi, a lawyer, served as a two-term commissioner during Aregbesola’s administration as governor of the state.

He was also a staunch member of The Osun Progressives (TOP), a caucus within the chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC), backed by Aregbesola.

Alimi, who was received by the PDP governorship candidate in the state, Sen. Ademola Adeleke, Caretaker Chairman of the party, Dr Akintunde Akindele and other PDP members, said that he left APC because of what he called marginalisation.

Although he said that Aregbesola could not leave APC because of his stake in it, the former commissioner, however, stated that he decided to dump the party because he could no longer withstand the maltreatment allegedly being meted out to him and others.

“We cried out to so many times without any solution.

“You know Aregbesola himself is a bigwig in APC. He cannot leave the party, but to some of us who can no longer withstand the heat that the state government is turning on us, we have to move out,” he said.

Alimi, however, appealed to the people of the state to come out en masse to vote for Adeleke in the July 16 governorship election.

In his remarks, Adeleke said Alimi’s defection to PDP would boost the chances of the party in the election.

The governorship candidate expressed confidence that he would win the election under a free and fair atmosphere.

“I want to thank President Muhammadu Buhari for signing the electoral bill into law,” he said, stressing that this would prevent rigging during elections.

“I believe that the people of Osun will defend their votes during the governorship election,” he said.
